Chapter Forty: At The Lake

It was midnight. The moon was reigning high on the blurred sky, covered in grey clouds. The neighborhood seemed so quiet as if nobody lived on this street. Everybody was immersed deep in the sleep, dreaming about things that could never happen in the real world.
As every other night, there were seven figures, or six actually, who didn't sleep. One of them was sitting in the attic, thinking about the past. Second one was lurking in the basement, looking for old recipes. Third one was looking at her jewelry collection, wondering which necklace pick for the new day. And the rest of them were standing in the corridor, in front of the door to Debra's room. She was in the bed for one last time before leaving Hailie's house in the morning.
The thing was, in the morning Debra was about to be already dead.
"So how do we want to do this?" asked Envy, staring at the closed door. "I love coming up with suicide ideas. What will she do? Will it be bloody? Pills? Gun? Torture?"
"I have an idea." Lust and Wrath came up with that during their afternoon full of drinks. "That will be my part to realize, with a little help from you, Envy."
"And I'll take care of fabricating some proofs. Maybe it'll turn out that I'm pretty good at leaving suicide letters," laughed Wrath. He already had in mind what to write about the pathetic life of that human.
"Finally something fun is about to happen." Out of boredom Envy changed the look of her hair. They weren't short anymore and she felt much better with long. "And that girl had it coming for a long time."l
"She definitely did. But seriously, Jayson's best friend? That's messed up. I'm glad I've helped Pride kill his parents."
"What?!" Envy and Lust looked at him with shock.
"Oh, you didn't know? I thought I told you something. Or that Pride did." He shrugged. "Well, now you know."
How could he forget to tell them? Well, there was a lot of going on lately, besides he left it to Pride's decision whether to say something or not.
"What are you doing here?" All of them turned around and gazed at Pride. "What is it with sneaking up in Debra's room?" She frowned, not thrilled about the fact that she was left out.
"She's Declan's girlfriend, also responsible for an assault on Hailie at the party, so she throw her out and we decided to kill Debra," explained Wrath with his voice so monotony like it was some old story he was telling.
Pride raised her chin.
"What are you waiting for then? Let's kill that bitch."
She headed towards the door, but Lust stopped her. He quickly took his hand out of her way under the look on her face.
"You still got it in yourself? Killing humans? I thought you're their best demon friend now," he joked.
"Haven't you heard what Wrath said a minute ago? I've arranged to kill Jayson's parents, while you were kissing with Declan's girlfriend, so might you shut up?"
He smiled. That's the Pride he liked. The ruthless queen of the doomed.
"Let's go."
He opened the door and the four of them walked into Debra's bedroom. She was sleeping at the side, so peacefully and unaware of what was going to happen.
"You think of yourself so high," started Pride, gently leaning over Debra's body. "The best girl in the town. The most beautiful, the sneaky one, the sexiest lover. So many lies told to yourself just so you could feel better about your unimportant life. So many beautiful words, which are not true."
"Because," Envy took over and she smiled to Pride in agreement, "you just can't help the bitterness that's filling your life. You're jealous of Amy's look and bond with Declan. You're jealous of Hailie's sweetness. And you're so deeply hurt that Lucien left you like some trash."
"You're full of insecurity and doubt," added Pride, pulling out to the light Debra's deepest, scariest feelings.
"That makes you so angry. Angry at the world, at all the people who can't see your value, even at yourself, because all of this is too much." Wrath started feeding on her negative emotions, waking up the rage hidden inside.
Debra started shaking uncomfortably in her bed, like she was having the worst nightmare. She moaned, trying to escape her most horrible thoughts, which were haunting her in sleep. Slowly, she got lost in all those emotions, getting caught up in a state of hypnosis. She was most vulnerable right now, perfect for playing with her mind.
"It's tormenting your soul, makes you wish for an escape." Lust sat down at the bed and placed his hand on Debra's check. Her face was delicate, but dry. "I can help you escape to the place, where you belong. Just listen to my voice."
"Stand up, Debra," Pride gave her an order, which she gladly fulfilled. Lost in the world created by the demons, she had no free will anymore. Their words were like a command she couldn't ignore.
"That's some out of fashion piece of cloth," commented Envy, seeing the long, white nightdress that Debra was wearing.
"What else did you expect? That girl doesn't know what the taste for fashion is." Pride leaned and placed a kiss on Debra's check. "There's a special place in Hell for people with such arrogance, insolence and pride. You're not better than everyone else, especially not better than Hailie."
"Come with us." Lust opened up doors and led Debra down the corridor. "Deep in the woods there's a lake."
"Beautiful, just like you," said Pride.
"That's where you longing to be. Deep down, buried under water, which you believe that could cleanse you." Lust gave her an idea, which started growing and burning in her mind, waiting to be fulfilled.
"But nothing can cleanse your soul." Pride touched Debra's hair, which were formed just like the waves of the sea. "Water can't wash away your sins."
"You must try it though, because what else is left to do?" Lust looked in her big, empty eyes. She was drifting far away from here. "Under the water there will be no one watching you anymore."
"It's just you and the lake. Separate, but free, until the both of you become one."
"Go to the lake," ordered Lust and Pride seconded him. "Find peace under the water."
"Let the lake take you."
"Free."
"For eternity."
Under the spell of Pride and Lust's words, Debra opened the back door of the house and walked outside barefoot. The night was cold and full of darkness, which was sinking deep into her soul. She was walking the path of death in the moonlight. Her figure disappeared in the woods, among tremendous and scary trees, casting shadows on the dark grass. Demons couldn't see Debra anymore, but they knew where she was going. Their words spread in her body, burned into her brain. She knew what she was about to do and she wanted to do it, even if that wasn't the choice she made.
With the cold wind blowing through her hair, she was going deeper and deeper into the woods, until she reached the lake that demons talked about. It looked so calm and untouched. Unshakeable surface of water, waiting for her to immerse.
She took one step, and another one until her bare feet reached water. The moon was so wonderful, brightening the lake just for her. She continued going into the water, feeling minor pricks of needles on the body, because of the coldness. Her breathing began to be jerky and fast, turning into the clouds of steam in the chilly night. The deeper she was going, the less she could feel. Her body seemed frozen, numb to the piercing cold of the water. She was shaking, scared of being alone and full of desire to stop feeling anything at all.
There was no turning back.
A single teardrop ran down her face as Debra plunged into the water, disappearing into the depths of the lake.
