Chapter Fifty Seven: It's All a Lie

The moment Hailie walked into her house she knew that it was not a good time for a conversation. She locked herself in the room and sat by the door, burying her head between legs. She wrapped her arms around knees, like she wanted to escape from the world. She stayed in that position, because it felt the safest. Her shoulders were shaking with every loud cry she was making. Her insides were burning with hurt and incredulity. It couldn't have been the truth, he wouldn't hurt her that much.

But then again, he was a demon. He was not a person she thought he was. He would hurt her. He did it.

It was like her whole world had been shaken. She felt so much pain and it didn't want to go away. Her body was filled with it, making it feel like she was about to break into two pieces. Everybody kept lying to her, but this was the worst lie she has ever faced. Lucien, no, Lust, made her fall in love with a man that doesn't exist. She felt betrayed and stupid. So utterly stupid! It was so humiliating. Was it a game for him? Was it fun? Some things couldn't be forgiven and right now Hailie thought like this was one of these things.

She started crying even louder, getting buried under a ton of pain and sadness. How she was supposed to look him in the face? To stay in this house? She thought he could be trusted, but he was just another one to lie and lie and lie! At the same time she was filled with so much anger and despair that she had no idea how to control her emotions before they shall start control her.

Hailie suddenly screamed and punched the floor with her fists, trying to let it all out, then she cried once again, almost lying on the cold wooden boards.

In front of her appeared Pride along with Envy and Greed, but she didn't want to see any of them. They've all known the truth and they've let her believe that Lucien was a human. She felt betrayed also because of them. The most hurtful thing was that Pride didn't tell her a thing.

On the other hand, she clearly tried to separate her from Lucien, saying that he was a flirt and a player, controlled by Lust. Maybe she just couldn't tell her the truth? Hailie didn't know about the rules between demons, but if Pride agreed to keep it a secret, maybe she had to.

"Hailie?" Pride sat in front of her, trying to understand what happened. She was thinking about the worst, that it had to do something with Jayson. But Hailie didn't have any signs of being hit or attacked by him. Then what happened?

"Is-Is there so-somebody e-else with us?" Hailie tried to make a sentence, but it was hard because of all the crying. "Don't lie!"

"I promise, it's only me, Greed and Envy," Pride answered, ready to throw out the other girls from the room in case Hailie would want that.

"Why were you lying?" she asked with her eyes full of teardrops. It was a question mostly for Pride. The other demons didn't mean for Hailie so much as she did. "I know everything, okay? No need to hide and lie more."

Pride bit her lip, still unsure what Hailie was referring to, but the look in her eyes, she was heartbroken. And that could only mean one thing. Pride gazed at the floor with her arms down. Hailie knew about Lust.

"I couldn't tell. That was the part of the deal made the day we decided to help you. I'm sorry."

Greed and Envy looked at each other, trying to get what Pride was talking about. They still weren't sure what secret Hailie found out about.

"I feel so humiliated and foolish. You were trying to warn me, but it was already too late," she sobbed and fell into Pride's arms. She hugged her tightly, looking for comfort. "But why? Why did he do it?"

Hailie's cries felt so painful to Pride. She has failed her. She was supposed to help Hailie, to keep her safe, but now this sweet girl was all heartbroken and sorrowful.

"Because that's the way he is. He doesn't deserve you. He never did."

The hate that Pride felt towards Lust became stronger. All he was doing was hurting others. The more the better. He never tried to claim otherwise. He had his mantra about being demons. Maybe he was saying it so many times that it became the truth. But at the same time, she could see that there was something changing inside him the past few weeks. Then again, Lust knew from the beginning how it'll end. The moment he started meddling with Hailie's feelings was the moment that it all went towards this one point. The point, where Hailie got hurt, because of his actions.

She was crying for a few more minutes, but with every second the tension from her body was fleeing. She let herself get calmer in Pride's arms, while Greed and Envy were whispering in the corner of the room. Up to this moment Hailie had no idea how much she needed for someone to hug her and got her back. Pride was always here. The true friend. One that Hailie always dreamed of.

This was a pleasant feeling, but after some time she slowly left Pride's embrace and looked at her with a weak smile. The sadness didn't leave her body, but it was better now. She took a big gasp of air, trying to collect the broken pieces of her. After Jayson she made herself a promise. No more tears, because of men. Lucien wouldn't be an exception anymore. The anger started filling her body, taking misery's place. Her eyes darkened as she stood up with a new energy that awoke in her organism.

"Do you want me to go with you?" asked Pride, because she already guessed what Hailie was about to do.

"No, I'm going to take care of it myself." Hailie gazed at Greed and softened. "Can I have a moment with Greed, please?"

The other demon girls nodded with confusion and vanished. Hailie thought that maybe it wasn't the best time to have this conversation, but later she might forget or be too busy with her emotions.

"What is it about, Hailie?" she asked, not sure what Hailie might have wanted to talk about.

"I've met a woman today. She wanted me to give you a message."

She remembered the words that Leah spoke to her. It took her a minute, because she tried not to make a mistake.

Yesterday, upon the stair,

I met a girl, who was from Hell

I shared myself, she told her secrets

And at this night we understood

What have been connected

Cannot be separated

In heart the feelings are strong

Even at distance

My love to you will always be there

Greed opened her eyes wider and for a moment her jaw started trembling. She quickly put a hand on her lips, remembering all the kisses they've shared. All those honey-like moments filled with laughter and carelessness. In her eyes there was sorrow about that day, but her lips stretched into a smile. Leah always liked Antigonish, but this one, this was all her words. She said it to her just before leaving. They were standing at the door, saying goodbyes, when she leaned to her and whispered it all to her ear. Then she placed the last kiss on her lips and walked away. That was the day of great despair to Greed, but also a day, when she understood that she was lucky to meet and love such an extraordinary woman as Leah. It was nice of her to finally speak, even if she used Hailie to deliver her words. Even if she believed that Greed didn't know. She did. She always knew. The first day, she could just feel her.

"Next time you'll see her, tell her that it's rude to wait ten years with a visit," she freely chuckled. "And I'm still waiting."

Hailie didn't expect that, but everybody just kept surprising her. She chuckled as well, and replied, "I'll tell her that."

"Now go and yell at Lust. Will you need any of us, we're all here. Girls have to stick together." She winked at her and disappeared a moment later.

Hailie turned to the door, getting ready for confrontation. This moment with Greed was a nice break from her problems. It helped her calm down, but now the anger was cutting through her heart, making it cold as ice. She straightened up and left her room, deciding to come downstairs. She stopped in the middle of the hall. The house seemed so quiet and calm. Exactly not like she was feeling inside. It was the moment. She was ready, at least as much as it was possible.

Her lungs filled with air as she took a deep breath to scream out loud, "Lucien!" She waited for a moment, checking if he'll react to his human name. "Lucien!" she tried once again but realized that he was pretending to not be home. That just made her angrier. She hated being played like that. "Fine! Let me try to call you differently!" Hailie clenched her hands into fists. "Lust!" Nothing happened. "Lust, I know you can hear me!" Was he seriously that scared of their confrontation?

"Who told you?"

Hailie got chills, when Lust suddenly appeared in front of her. She already knew he was a demon, but seeing him this way, coming up in flames to the hall, it just made it more real. He was still that handsome man she used to call Lucien Tuls. Nothing changed in his look, except that the truth made him look more dangerous. He didn't have to pretend to be a nice, ordinary human. There were sparks of slyness in his eyes. Sparks of enormous talent for manipulating others with pretending to be someone they wanted him to be.

"Seriously, that's the first thing you said?" she scoffed, so disappointed in him.

"Was it Officer Noisy? And then you connected the dots about Lucien's non-existence and the only demon you haven't seen?" Another proof that Shane Blackwell was a serious problem for him. He was poking his nose into others' affairs.

"Even if, does it matter?" Lust almost got it right and Hailie didn't plan on bringing Leah into this whole case.

"No, I should've known that sooner or later you'll find out who I am. I was just counting on later."

She wanted to keep her emotions on side but hearing how little he cared about all this lying, made her hurt even more. That's why she decided to stick with anger.

"You're nothing more than a liar and a coward!" She aggressively pointed at him. "And now you're acting like, like you didn't care at all! But hey, what I've been expecting after a demon of deception and passion, huh? All this time you've been manipulating me, maybe even feeding on my emotions. Honestly, I don't have words, because nothing I say can show the level of my disappointment, fury and regret. Yes, I regret everything that ever happened between us. Every kiss, I wish it never happened! You're, you're cheeky and shameless!" She was calling him everything that came into her mind, trying to hurt him at least a little bit. But did he even have any feelings at all? Maybe it was like she was screaming at the emotionless Hell creature.

Lust seemed so calm and indifferent. It was hard to say what he was thinking. After a moment Hailie understood it was his tactic. He didn't want anybody to be able to see his deeply hidden emotions. Weren't they alone? She looked around, but she couldn't see the demons that Lust was seeing.

"Are you done with calling me names?" he asked, not sure what to do in this situation.

Lust didn't prepare for confrontation with Hailie. He was hoping to get more time, before she'll find out his true identity. It happened too fast. He didn't have a chance to think what would be just right to say. And it didn't help that others were watching them. He couldn't talk with her honestly, not if he didn't want them to find out that he actually cared a little bit about this human.

"Maybe. Maybe not." Sha wasn't sure either. There were a lot more adjectives she could use.

He had to make a decision. And he had to make it fast.

"Firstly, and probably the most importantly, I've never manipulated you. Everything you did, you did because you wanted to. You told me about Jayson, it was only your decision. And many other times, when we were talking and confiding into ourselves. The many kisses we shared, I didn't play with your feelings. If you had any emotions towards me, it was always your emotions, undictated by me. Once again, so that we would be clear, I wasn't manipulating you in any way. Not once."

Hailie wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing. It was nice to know that he didn't make her feel those things, that he didn't use her like that. On the second hand, it was scary to realize that she started falling for a demon.

"Fine," she mumbled, because deep down she knew that this time he was telling the truth. Everything she felt, it was all hers. "But that doesn't change the fact that you've been consciously misleading me, trying to make me believe you're a human, moreover, that you have feelings for me. That's disgusting to be playing me like that."

You have to make a decision, he thought, knowing it was the time.

"Hailie-"

"What?" she harshly asked. He shouldn't be surprised to see her so furious. He deserved being treated like that, especially that if it was him, who would be lied to, the outcome could be even scarier.

He could pretend to be indifferent. Say that it really meant nothing to him. Show himself just like he wanted to be seen for all these years.

Or he could fight for her.

Make the fucking decision.

Tik-Tok. A clock in the hall was making him irritated and under pressure.

"When we met, my only goal was to seduce you. That's why I decided to pretend to be a human. So that I had a bigger chance to succeed." Now or never. "But then I got to know you better and I started to care for you. It was already too late to tell the truth. I simply couldn't do it. I knew that you would hate me for all those games. But the Lucien you've met, it may be a different name, but it's still me. So, here I stand, admitting that I do care for you, even if I'm a demon and it may sound ridiculous. That's the truth. You're not indifferent to me and I believe that what happened between us-"

"What happened between us?" She blinked a few times, trying to find any sense in Lust's words. "No, no, no."

"Please, Hailie." He tried to come closer, but she stepped back, raising her hands in the air, like she was trying to protect herself.

She used to look at him with so many feelings written on her face, mostly happiness or even passion. Now it was all gone.

"There's nothing between us," she said slowly and clearly so that he would understand well and never thought otherwise. "It's all been just a lie, nothing more."

"It's not true."

"No, Lucien." She bit her lip. It wasn't his name. "Lust," she called him properly. "It'd be the best if I never had to see you again."

He tried his best not to show how Hailie's words hurt him. His face stayed emotionless due to centuries of practice. Nobody could see his weak side. He didn't have one. That's what everybody should believe in. That's why he replied, "At least, we agree on that."

After those words he raised his hands in the air, making the fire shoot from the floor. The flames consumed him completely. They disappeared after a few seconds, along with Lust.
