Chapter Fifty Nine: Twin Blades
Hailie came to the kitchen in a dancing mood. She circled the table and stopped right in front of Gluttony, who was making delicious breakfast. Thanks to him, mornings became a really good beginning of the day. The smell of the dishes he prepared was floating in the whole house. Hailie was waking up well rested and slightly hungry, but today she was clearly happy.
"Hi, morning bird, what's with that mood?" asked Envy, who was sitting with Pride at the table.
"I thought we all knew that she kissed Shane." Gluttony tossed the pancakes in the air. "Information circulates really fast in this house," he explained, letting Hailie know that probably everybody knows about it already. "Am I right, sweethearts?"
"Yeah, we sort of love to gossip," Pride agreed. "But hey, who doesn't like that?"
"Lust," said Envy without hesitation. "Sometimes he's such a mood killer with his 'what do you care, anyway.' Well, we do!"
The rest of the demons laughed at Envy's words, but Hailie became a little worried. She quickly shook it off. Lust won't destroy her good day by being present in her thoughts. She might've tried to hide it, but Envy noticed her mood swings anyway.
"I think Hailie's mood passed on to me." Gluttony started dancing, while making breakfast. He made a quick move into the right and pointed with his spatula at the radio. It turned on immediately and the song went on.
"Please, just don't sing," pleaded Pride, who couldn't stop chuckling.
"Watch me." Gluttony smiled, but before he had a chance to open his mouth again, Pride pointed at the radio and the station changed. Another song went on and all the demons at once groaned.
"Oh no, is it already time for Christmas songs? Come on! It's the beginning of December. Few days ago, it was still November. Way too fast," Envy complained and quickly changed the radio station, so they wouldn't have to be tortured by the sound of those stupid songs. Bad enough that soon all people on the street will start their annual house decorating.
"You guys don't like Christmas?" Hailie asked, but then she almost facepalmed.
Obviously, they didn't like Christmas. They were demons. Probably they believed it was a hideous human holiday.
"We used to like," Pride said, making the cheerful atmosphere blend. In those times even Wrath ultimately liked this season. Maybe because of how they spent their last Christmas with Missy. Oh, how much fun they've had after smoking the weed she gave them.
"Only because of Lust's daughter."
Hailie froze in a shock. Only her mouth was able to move and ask the question, "Lust had a daughter?" Was it even possible with demons?
"Missy wasn't his daughter, but he loved her like his own," explained Pride. "There's a lot you don't know about us yet," she added, seeing how surprised Hailie seemed.
Considering how sad they all were, while talking about this Missy, something must've happened. She remembered what Lust as Lucien told her once. About a girl he was taking care of and one day something terrible occurred. He was telling her then about Missy. The night of the party, at the garden.
Maybe not everything was a lie after all?
No, it didn't matter. It didn't.
Hailie wanted to ask how Missy passed away, but she had a feeling that the demons won't tell her. She was right. Envy must've sensed her emotions and dilemmas, because she said, "We shouldn't discuss Missy's fate. If you're curious, ask Lust. Maybe he'll tell you."
Hailie shook her head. This was a terrible idea.
"No way, we're not talking."
She hasn't seen him since their fight two days ago and that's how it's supposed to stay.
"Good for you." Pride was really happy about Hailie's attitude towards Lust. Finally, he was treated the way he deserved.
"If we're circulating around Lust's topic, let me ask you one thing, Hailie." Envy reached for one of the pancakes that Gluttony just put on the table. They were still hot. "Isn't Shane just a consolation prize? Don't get me wrong, you just hopped in really quick. Just as if you were trying to forget about one boyfriend by having another."
Haile's eyes darkened as she clenched her hands into fists. Envy didn't know that her words would make her so deeply angry. Then she saw Wrath in the corner of the kitchen.
"Firstly, Lust was never my boyfriend. There was nothing between us, except for a few kisses. Secondly, if I was to choose, I'd choose Shane, because he's better in every possible way. I'm feeling better with him. Like myself, certain of my feelings."
Envy raised her hand, hearing the rising anger in Hailie's voice. It was just an observation. Besides, it was nothing bad. After Lust kind of broke up with her, she found herself many consolation prizes.
"Sorry, my mistake." She looked at her piercingly. "But you're getting really triggered, while we talk about Lust." She shrugged. "And if you don't care about him anymore, you should be perfectly indifferent."
"Maybe I'm angry, because he's a douchebag, who lied to me and used me," she proposed, taking her bag from the chair back. "I need to go to classes," she decided she wasn't in a mood to stay any longer.
"Don't forget breakfast!" Gluttony gave her a container with pancakes, because he had a hunch that she'll go, before eating.
Pride wasn't listening to others, while they were talking. She was glancing at Wrath, who called her by the gesture of his hand. It looked like he wanted to talk with her about something important. Without any words, she stood up and left the kitchen even faster than Hailie did.
"Attic," Wrath whispered and quickly vanished, making it even more mysterious.
Pride rolled her eyes. Probably he wanted to cuddle a little bit and be sure that nobody will be looking. The attic was a strange place to do it, but she transferred herself there.
"Yes, my dear?"
He couldn't stand in one place, walking from one side of the attic to the other one. There was a big smile on his face, while he was buried in his thoughts, trying to figure out the mystery that was making him numb. Maybe Pride would know something? No, probably no one did. Smart little demon, he kind of fooled them all. Dammit, he can't just ask him. But he must say it all to Pride! She has to know. Only she, yes, only she.
"You won't believe it!" His excitement made Pride aware that Wrath didn't call her here to kiss her until the night falls. "Look!" He gazed around once again, even though he was sure there was nobody else in the attic. He took out an ancient blade or rather only a half of it. The letters written on it shone with every movement of the hand, each in different, devilish looking color. The blade was very sharp and even if it had only half of the handle, it was still handy. Holding it in his hand, Wrath felt incredibly powerful. "You recognize this?"
"One of the Twin Blades!" Pride gasped. It seemed nearly impossible, but here it was, in Wrath's hands. "But which one? And how did you get it?" Pride started to feel scared that Wrath might've done something stupid in order to get this powerful item. She knew legends and she knew that one couldn't just casually get into possession of one out of two halves of the Twin Blade.
"I think it's the Boundary Breaker." Wrath brought the blade closer, trying to decode the inscription.
"You think?" It wasn't time for jokes. "Admit it, you have no idea, which one is it."
"Look here, this letter looks a lot like 'B', doesn't it?"
She gave him a sympathetic gaze.
"That's not how it works. Unless you're speaking devilish, you won't be able to decode which blade is it. As far as I know, only Devil speaks his own language. That was the point of dividing the Twin Blade into two pieces. For no one to be able to find them or read them."
Wrath sighed, "I'm pretty sure it's the Boundary Breaker." He actually wanted for it to be that other half, but those inscriptions, it must've been the one he was speaking about!
"Maybe you're right," Pride admitted, not being able to resist. It was like the blade was speaking to them. It wasn't words, more like a feeling that they've had the Boundary Breaker. And the blade was calling them to use it. It was dangerous to even think about it, so Pride shook her head and stepped back. There was something wrong with this blade. "Back to the second question, how did you get it?"
"It might be hard to believe, but I found it in Sloth's hiding place. In the garden"
Pride frowned. She wasn't sure if it was weirder that Sloth had a hiding place or that someone hid a blade there.
"I'm sorry, but what are you suggesting? That Sloth?" She opened her mouth wider as Wrath nodded. No, it was impossible. He was too lazy to come when called, let alone to travel to Hell and bring one of the Twin Blades, which was a craziness too. Being in possession of that thing puts them on a blacklist they surely shouldn't want to be on. "No, we must be wrong. That can't be any of the halves of the Twin Blade."
It wasn't just about Sloth. She didn't believe that any of the demons living in the house had the possibility to get into possession of such a valuable item.
"But it is. I couldn't believe it either."
Pride put her hands on the head, like it was too much to take in. The Twin Blade was divided into two powerful halves – Boundary Breaker and Spell Breaker. It was created by heavenly forces, but destroyed, or rather broken in two by the Devil as he believed that the Blade was too powerful. The halves separately had frightfully strong power, but together... Together they were strong enough to scare the Devil himself. So many legends were created since the division of the Twin Blade, but most of them were about the location of one of the halves as it was missing for centuries.
"Then somehow he must've found it. It must be the one that's been missing, because the second half of the Twin Blade is in Devil's possession." Pride believed Sloth wouldn't be neither that courageous to steal from the Devil nor simply able to do so. But was it even Sloth? Who else? Lust? Greed? Envy? Pride couldn't believe that any of them would pull something like that.
But someone did.
"We're not going to tell anybody," decided Wrath and Pride agreed on that. "Whoever found this Blade, soon will notice that it's missing. Then he or she will have to say something in order to find it. We'll wait for that moment."
"Yeah, and honey, I don't want to know where you're going to hide it." The more she was looking at this Blade the more she was sure of it. Some objects, even the powerful ones, should be left alone. That one seemed like it was calling her, and she didn't like that feeling.
"Don't worry, Pride. It'll be just fine." He kissed her on the top of her head and suddenly all worries indeed disappeared. She hugged tighter into him, grateful that they found each other. She felt so lucky to have him.
You can't hide the truth forever, he suddenly remembered Pride's words. They were spoken in the context of Hailie finding out about Lust, but it also hit him personally.
Because he as well had a secret, that he wanted to keep as a mystery forever.
