Chapter Eighty Two: The Awakening
There was a steady beep in the room from the cardiac monitor as it registered Hailie's vital signs. A quiet beep was the first thing she heard, before opening her eyes. At first the image was blurry, but she noticed that she was lying in the white room, connected to the medical equipment. As soon as she made a slight movement, trying to force any word out of her mouth, few figures stood up.
"Hailie?" She blinked a few times, recognizing her sister's voice. Molly. It was only a few months since she started college and saw her, but after all she went through, it felt like years of not seeing each other. "Hailie, we're here. Can you hear us?" She blinked. "I'm with mum and dad."
Hailie's eyes followed Molly's gaze and noticed two figures standing by the bed. She smiled, seeing her mum, who always had this calm and warm look, while brown hair curled a bit around her face. Her brown eyes seemed tired, like she hasn't had a good sleep in a few days. Hailie thought that maybe Sloth could help her with that.
"Where-," she tried to speak up, but her voice was hoarse.
"You're at the hospital," mum explained, catching her by the hand. "Doctors said that you lost some blood and were hypothermic. You were shot in the leg, so they had to operate on it, but now it's all good. After a few months it'll be like new." Hailie looked at her leg that was in gypsum, immobilized.
Dad sat down on a chair on her right side, just beside mum. His hair was getting a bit white, but only in a few places. From the look on his wrinkled face, it was clear that he was happy now, when Hailie woke up.
"Officer Blackwell called us, when they took you to the hospital. He explained everything that had happened."
"He's spending all his time in the hospital. Honestly, I think he even sleeps here. He never leaves your side" added Molly, sending her a wink. "Right now, he went for some hot chocolate, but should be back soon." Hailie smiled, getting excited about seeing him again. Alive and healthy. "You've got other visitors too. We've met Pride. She talks a lot about being your best friend. She's with Officer Blackwell now."
"Cute girl," mum commented. "We stopped at your house but didn't get a chance to meet your roommate. What was his name?"
"Lucien," dad replied, having this fatherlike look of thinking about his daughter living with an unknown man in the same house. It doesn't matter if they're roommates. He had to meet him.
"But we didn't get a chance to talk. It seems like he's always in the house, when we are not. But the doctors said that he visited you a few times."
Where was he right now? And where were all the demons? Hailie didn't feel comfortable with her family staying at the Bloody Mansion, even though she didn't have to be scared that the demons would hurt them. They wouldn't do that, but she preferred to have it under control, and right now, she hasn't had that.
"Water." Hailie pointed at the glass standing nearby the bed. Molly gave it to her, helping Hailie drink.
"You were unconscious for five days. Do you know what happened?" Molly put the glass back on the bedside table.
Hailie nodded, remembering everything that has happened since her return from Hell. "Jayson. We were fighting, I escaped to the woods, then he found me and shot me in the leg, then he-" Hailie gazed at Molly, like she was looking for confirmation.
"Jayson's dead. Officer Blackwell shot him from behind. He saved your life."
"Oh honey, you could've told us." Her mum's voice broke. "We would've been here for you, help you. We know he was back for a longer time. We also know about Declan's disappearance. The police think that Jayson might've killed him too."
"Elisa, later." Dad put his hand on her back. He was sure that Hailie didn't want to think about all these things right now. "She should rest."
"I'm really happy to see you." Hailie felt tears welling up in her eyes. "I've missed you so much."
"We missed you too." Mum hugged her daughter, stroking her hair. "We thought you needed some time on your own, but it was our mistake. We shouldn't have left you like that. That won't happen again."
"But don't move into my house, please," Hailie joked, making them all laugh.
"We paid for it, so it's basically our house," dad replied jokingly. "Don't worry, we'll leave you some freedom, but not until you're fully healed."
"Thanks, I-I would really like that. For you to stay around for a bit," Hailie said truthfully. She missed them, and she didn't realize how much up to this moment.
"Oh, honey." Mum hugged her once again, like it was hard for her to let go. Hailie could see from the look of her brown eyes that she felt bad about leaving her daughter on her own. She wasn't like Molly, all successful and self-sufficient. She still needed them, even if she wasn't speaking about that.
"Hailie!"
She let go of her mum and opened her eyes wider, with happiness, as she saw Shane standing by the door with a cup of hot chocolate.
"Shane!" she called him with a big smile on her face.
He gave his cup to Pride, who was right beside him, and came to Hailie to hug her. "You're awake," he said, noticing only her, even though Hailie's entire family was in the room. "I was getting scared that-" There was no need to say that aloud. Hailie was fine. Nothing more threatened her.
"That you're going to have to share with me a true love kiss to wake me up?" Hailie joked, showing him that she's in a perfect mood.
"What?" Her father reacted immediately, but Elise took him by the arm.
"Let's give them some time together," she proposed, taking her husband outside the room.
"See you later, sis." Molly waved at her and followed their parents out, leaving Hailie only with Shane and Pride, who sat at the chair beside Hailie's bed.
"Welcome back, sweetheart." Pride caught her hand and leaned closer. "Can I later draw on your gypsum?"
"Yes, you can," Hailie laughed. "Is it really over?" She took a breath and suddenly her eyes got two times bigger out of fear. "What about Amy? Lust said that she was alive?"
They've had their problems in the past and Hailie couldn't forgive her, but she hoped that her ex-friend was okay, after all. After Amy's case, Shane has read about it. Hailie looked at him, full of fear.
"She survived."
"Yes," Hailie breathed out in relief.
"You're happy?" Pride was full of admiration for Hailie. On her spot, she would've let Amy die. She helped her only because of Hailie.
"Amy's a bitch, but I wish death to no one, except for Jayson, who's already dead."
"Doctors said that she was incredibly lucky," Shane continued. "She reacts to stimuli and simple commands. Brain stem, which is the most critical part of the brain, responsible for breathing, heartbeat and body temperature, has not been damaged. The bullet passed through the skull and flew out of the back of her head. It did not cause any serious injuries. She has months of treatment and rehabilitation ahead of her, but for the next few days the most important thing is not to let an infection get into the wound. Nevertheless, it's still difficult to assess how she will cope with life in the future and how her brain will function. It can cause irreversible damage to her memory, damage to the speech center, or other problems, but doctors can't say anything about possible injuries at the moment."
Hailie nodded, thinking that Amy will need her own parents. She never really had anybody. No real friends, no support, no nothing, but right now, she really needed that.
"It was so wild." Hailie couldn't talk about what happened with her parents. They still didn't know a lot of things, including demons and her journey to Hell. "Lucifer sent me to this cabin, he must've done it on purpose." That was easy enough to understand. The Devil wasn't making mistakes. He knew. He wanted her dead, and that just made Hailie even more scared. What if he tries that once again? Was she safe? "And then Jayson and Amy showed up. They were talking, and he took out a gun. They've heard me. I tried to do something, but he shot her. I really thought she was dead."
"Shh, Hailie, it's over now," Shane calmed her down, because she started trembling again. "Jayson will never hurt you again."
She put her head on his arm, as he sat at her bed. "Thank you. For saving me." She smiled and looked at Pride. "But I still don't know what happened. How can you even be here? Outside the house?"
"We've made a deal with Lucifer," Pride explained. "He granted us freedom, all, except for Greed, who must've stayed with him in Hell."
"What? Why?" Hailie didn't know her that well, but she didn't like the idea of leaving anybody behind.
"It seems like Greed and Lucifer have some history." She gave her the look. "It was her choice to stay. For us." And Pride was really sorry about leaving her, but there was nothing they could do.
Hailie blinked a few times. The demons were free. They could leave the Bloody Mansion, wander Earth. Will she see others? Maybe they left already. But without saying goodbye? She sighed, because the thing was, she didn't care that much for others. She was sad, because there was only one who she was missing.
"Where's Lust?" Hailie asked, trying not to show up, that she hoped that he would be in the hospital when she woke up.
He wasn't here, so where was he? Hailie hoped he didn't leave, but then realized it was impossible. Molly said that he was coming to visit her.
Shane and Pride looked at each other, as if they knew where Lust was at the moment. In Hell. Making sure that Jayson will be the most tortured human in the history of Hell.
"He keeps checking on you." That was not the answer for her question, but Hailie didn't try to force it out of them. "He'll probably stop by real soon," Pride added.
"I guess," Hailie admitted, with a bit of sorrow in her voice. "How do you think, when will I be able to leave the hospital?"
"You've just woken up!" Pride laughed, gazing at Shane, who was only staring at Hailie as if he wanted to make sure that she's really fine. That this whole nightmare has really ended. "Give it some time. You'll probably stay in the hospital for a few more days."
Hailie moaned, "But I have college!" She already missed a whole week.
"Christmas is soon anyway, so don't worry about lectures. You should rest right now," Shane said with his voice bearing no objection. Hailie thought it was sweet of him to take such good care of her.
"And after you'll be out, we have so many things to do together!" Pride got excited. "Seriously, the outside world keeps surprising me. It's all different, when you watch life from the windows and on a television. There are so many things to discover! And now, when I'm free, I want to try it all! Shopping, eating at restaurants, partying, doing some sports, extreme trips, call it, I'll do it!"
"Easy, Pride. For Hailie it might even take months before she comes back to her full strength."
"Oh no, I want to do all those things with Pride!" she called, already thinking about having the best time in her life. Pride was like a true best friend she never has had. Who cared she was a demon? No discrimination here! "I wish I could see how you're adjusting to the world."
"Don't worry, it'll probably take me months!" Pride laughed, ready to explore her newly received freedom.
"Demons on the run." Shane put his hand to the forehead. "I beg you, just don't kill too many people."
He was grateful to them for saving his life, or actually, for bringing him back from the dead, but it was Wrath who killed him. And he was living long enough in this town to know about all the murders, suicides and other scary crap that happened around the Bloody Mansion. Pride might've been easy with humans as she seemed to bond with them the most, but other demons? He didn't trust any of them, especially not Wrath. That one on the loose, it meant only more trouble. And it scared the shit out of him. When they were trapped in the Bloody Mansion, there was at least some limit of people that might've gotten killed.
"Don't worry, we'll be on our best behavior," Pride promised, even though she wasn't so sure about other demons. It seemed like killing was in their blood but living in the Bloody Mansion taught them a lot. They knew the mercy and most of the time they weren't hurting those who didn't deserve it. "Now, I should check out others. To see what they're up to." Truly, she just wanted to give some alone time to Hailie and Shane. "See you later." She kissed her on the cheek and walked out of the hospital room like a normal human.
Yes, it might be weird if she starts teleporting herself around. Coming to the room and never leaving it. They should be careful with their demonic ways of living.
"Here we are. At the beginning of the new road," Hailie said, feeling exactly that way.
Finally, Jayson was gone. Forever. She'll never meet him again. Neither will she meet Declan. Besides, demons were free. Her house was actually hers, as she believed that neither of them would stay in the Bloody Mansion. They've spent enough time there. Right now, she felt like it was the start of something new. And she was so excited about it.
"And I'm really happy to stand there with you." Shane kissed her hand, looking into her beautiful hazel eyes.
"If it weren't for you, I might've been gone." Hailie didn't even want to think about it. She was lucky to have him.
"Funny, because I feel like I could say the same thing about you." Both of them knew that it wasn't up to Hailie to travel to Hell and get him back, but she came to rescue him. She did everything she could so that he was back on Earth. Living again. That was a debt he felt that could never be paid off. He was more than happy to be here with her.
"So, we saved each other," she laughed, wanting to get as close to him as possible. Shane must've sensed it. "Do you want to lay beside me?" she asked, feeling how her cheeks went all red.
"Always," he said, taking a place in the bed that was more comfortable than he thought.
Hailie put her head on his chest, hearing his heartbeat. It made her feel calm and cheerful, and Shane put his arm around her. His closeness was everything she wanted at the moment, or so she thought, because even though she was lying beside Shane, she couldn't forget Lust's words about how much he loves her. He never said them to her face, and she wondered, why? Why did he lie, back in the Human's Kingdom?
"Thank you," she said once again. Shane had a feeling that Hailie would say it a thousand times more, even though she didn't have to thank him for anything.
"I'll always be here, by your side," he reminded, stroking Hailie on her delicate, warm hand. "I love you." Shane leaned and kissed Hailie just by the eye, making her smile.
I love you too, she thought.
The only thing she didn't know was, to whom these words were addressed?
Lust or Shane?
Or both of them?
Love was so complicated.
