Chapter Eighty: One Step Forward
The demons were standing at the edge of the Bloody Mansion, in the garden, just ahead of an open gate leading to the forest. They were looking at the exit with uncertainty, almost as if they expected something bad to happen.
"So, who goes first?" Sloth asked. He wanted to run out of here, but felt frozen to the floor.
"Why? You think that there's a catch?" replied Wrath, who wouldn't be so surprised if there was more to their freedom. They all had a hard time believing that the Devil would just let them go. "Honestly, I think that Lucifer hates me the most, but maybe he waits for one of us to cross the line and then-"
"And then what?" Envy rolled her eyes, gazing at Gluttony, who was sitting on the grass with a croissant in his hands. He was wearing a T-shirt, even though it was winter. But neither of them was cold.
"Who knows what the Devil prepared." Wrath shrugged. He was wondering where Lust and Pride were. They still didn't come back and it couldn't mean anything good.
"Cowards," Envy muttered and without hesitation she crossed the line between the Bloody Mansion and the forest. She stopped at the other side and waited a few seconds, but nothing happened. She was free. They all were.
And there was no catch, because Lucifer got what he wanted. He knew where the Spell Breaker was and he got Greed. She stayed behind for them. And they didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. Who knows when will be the next time they get to see her?
"Dudes, we're finally free." Sloth laughed and walked out of the garden. "Yes!" he screamed, throwing his hands into the air. "After all this time, we can rock and roll. Awesome!" Out of this happiness he laid down on the grass next to the line of trees. It was so good. This grass felt so much better than the grass in their garden.
"What are you doing?" Envy came to him, casting a shadow over his silhouette.
"I'm going to take a nap. The journey to Hell was exhausting. Saving Earth and Shane's soul was even harder. I deserve to have some sleep now. Goodnight, Envy, please, I don't want to be disturbed. Find yourself another part of the grass."
She sighted. He might've chosen a better place for a nap once he was freed. But for Sloth it seemed like the best place on Earth – only because it was outside of the Bloody Mansion. And he believed that now, when he was free, he had plenty of time to go and try out various spots on Earth. Maybe he'll create his own ranking of the best places to sleep in.
"Quite lovely." Envy shrugged. She just hoped that Sloth won't disappear, before saying at least goodbye to them. "What about you, Gluttony?"
"I think I'm going to do some grocery shopping. Or maybe I should go to the restaurant? Nobody cooked for me, since-" He didn't end, thinking about his dear friend from the past. "I'm gonna see if humans are better, but I doubt it."
Now, Envy looked at Wrath, looking for some support in him.
"Aren't we going to look for the others? Pride and Lust still didn't come back. And where is Hailie? Shane?"
Envy nodded at his words, unaware that Shane was standing by the door leading to the garden. Seeing the four demons, he returned to the house. He was looking for Hailie in every room, but he couldn't find her. Thanks to Envy he realized that she still hadn't come back from Hell, along with Lust and Pride. But there was one more missing. He had no idea why nobody spoke about Greed's absence.
He came to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, trying to calm himself down. Surely, Lust wouldn't let the Devil hurt Hailie. Right? He wasn't sure of anything anymore, but he was worried sick without her.
There were no traces from the wound that he received from Wrath. Just as if it never happened. Shane was safe and sound, physically feeling better than ever. Mentally, he was still trying to process the fact that he returned from the dead. He had all the memories from In Between and he was well aware that he was gone only for a day and a half. He checked it out. It was the first thing he had done after waking up in the corridor in the Bloody Mansion. Then he took his phone and a gun and went looking for Hailie.
Even though his condition was perfect, he was worrying that in the future there will be consequences of being killed, trapped In Between and resurrected. That was not a normal thing, and it was hard to believe that he'll just get to live as he lived. But right now, everything seemed perfect, so he decided not to worry about it. If the demons were free, as he just saw, then maybe Lucifer's power was strong enough to bring him back, without further problems.
He drank the water, thinking about his next step. He was going to stay in the house, until Hailie's return, when he heard voices in the hall. Being sure that it must've been other demons, who came back from Hell, Shane rushed to another room. His heartbeat sped up at the thought of seeing Hailie again and taking her in his arms, but when he got to the hall, she wasn't there.
"Shane!" Pride saw him right away. He was completely fine, which made her glad. The Devil really brought him back, just the way he was. Their problem was solved. At least that one. "So good to see you back!"
"Where's Hailie?" he asked, because she wasn't with them and from the look on Lust's face he already knew that something bad had happened.
"We don't know. Lucifer transferred her back on Earth not so long after he resurrected you. But she's not in the house and I'm afraid that wherever he had put her, that can't be a good place." Lust was seriously concerned, but that didn't help Shane. He wanted to take his anger out on Lust, because he promised he'll take care of Hailie. "We need to find her, before it'll be too late."
Lust felt like his whole world stopped in a moment. He was trapped in time between saving Hailie and losing her forever. He had no idea how to find her, and the stress started to take him over. That just made him angrier, because he hated feeling weak and that's what human's emotions were doing to him. Making him weak.
"There must be a way to find her. Maybe-"
"A spell," Lust ended this sentence for Pride. Suddenly he raised his head up, like he sensed something. "Of course, I'm bound with Hailie by the spell!"
"What?" Shane parted his mouth, he didn't like this kind of bonding between them at all.
Lust pointed at him with his finger. "Get the car keys, officer. We're going for a ride."
Without waiting for them to make a move, he came to the door and walked outside. Just before the end of the ground of the Bloody Mansion, Lust stopped and looked at the street. They were trapped for so many years in this house. It was hard to believe that the spell was no longer keeping them as prisoners here. But that was the new order. They were free to do whatever they liked, to go wherever they pleased. And so, Lust made another step, crossing the line between the Bloody Mansion and the outside world. Pride joined him, not having any problems with just going with the flow. She waited for this moment just as much as others.
"That's a feeling I didn't know until now. I don't even know what to call it," she said, taking joy in standing outside the Bloody Mansion. Seeing the world, she was both thrilled by this vision and scared. But first, they had to find Hailie.
"Got 'em!" Shane opened the door to his car and took the place behind the wheel. Lust sat on the passenger side, while Pride got in the backseat. Both of them were clearly astonished by sitting in the car. They knew all about them, but they never were in one. "Where should I go?"
"I'm going to direct you." Lust gave him the first hint about where Shane was supposed to drive. "Where I was with Hailie In Between, she thought she saw Shane in the Cemetery of the Forgotten. That's why she went there, and that's how we ended up in the Casino Hell," he started explaining how it happened that the two of them were bound by the spell. "I needed to find her quickly, so I casted the spell. It led me to her, but after finding her, I didn't unbind us. We've got some more important things to do, besides, it could've been useful later."
"Like now," Pride noticed, finally getting why both of them showed up in the Casino Hell.
"But this spell works completely different In Between and on Earth. After all, it's a hellish spell. A demonic one. It has a bigger power in Hell." That's why In Between he could see a golden line after saying the spell aloud. It disappeared after he found Hailie, but it was still between them. On Earth it was neither possible nor that easy. "Turn right here," he ordered Shane, who was listening to all Lust's directions.
"So, you know where she is?" For Shane it was too complicated. He was still new in all these supernatural things.
The answer was simple.
"No." Lust felt regret that he couldn't do anything more. He felt like it was not enough. The bound and the spell, it still might've been already too late. "Again, right." He was so absorbed by the thoughts about Hailie, that he didn't even care for the outside world. "I don't know where she is, that's why I can't simply transport us there. It's more like sensing her."
"So, it's like you're following her scent," Shane summarized. "Like a dog."
Pride burst out in laughing on the backseat and Lust looked at Shane as if he wanted to murder him again. Officer Douchebag put his annoying mood on.
"Now, turn to that forest road." Lust pointed a turn into the woods.
Shane opened his eyes wider. "I know where we're going," he said and put on the full speed, watching out for a bumpy road. He was a policeman, and he had the whole file on Hailie and her old life, including all of her friends. It wasn't hard to connect the dots. He was going through the documents so many times that he had every single one of them in his memory. "This road leads to Declan's parents' cabin in the woods, by the lake. I know how to get there."
It took them around eight minutes to drive over there, even though Shane was driving as fast as he could. It was dark outside. They got nervous, seeing the lights in the distance. Hailie might've been in the cabin and if she was there, then probably she wasn't alone.
"That's Amy's car," Pride noticed. She started wondering whether that was good news or bad.
"But also Jayson's," Shane added, clumsily parking outside the cabin. He got out of the car first and took out gun. "Keep behind me," Shane ordered to Lust, who raised his eyebrow.
"We're demons." There was nothing more needed to be said. Lust just passed Shane by and walked into the house.
All three of them noticed Amy's body right away. She was lying on the floor and the blood around her body was still fresh.
"Hell, what happened here?" Pride asked quietly. "Hailie!" She ran upstairs to look for her, and Lust followed. His hand started shaking, so he clenched it to hide his emotions.
"Hailie!" Shane screamed her name as well and slowly looked around the room. He wasn't sure who was or was not in the house with them.
When Lust and Pride got to the room upstairs, they thought that it looked like a battlefield. They were gazing around at the damage made. Someone had a fight in here. The cabinet made of glass was shattered into pieces and there was some blood on the floor, along with Hailie's jacket. Holes in the door and the window meant that someone was shooting from a gun, Jayson probably.
"They're not here," Pride whispered, but she needed to be sure, so she went to check other rooms as well. She only found more blood in the bathroom and an unfolded bandage, along with a penknife that was covered entirely in blood.
Lust came back downstairs, noticing that Shane just crouched down next to Amy's body. She seemed dead, but he had to check it anyway. That was a police habit. His fingers touched her neck and then something unbelievable happened. He sensed her heartbeat. It was really weak, but it wasn't a mistake. With his eyes wide opened, he looked at Lust.
"She's still alive!" he called, making Pride come downstairs right away.
"How's that possible?" she asked, but there was no time for explanations.
Shane wasn't a doctor, but he heard about people who survived a gunshot in the head. If her brain wasn't damaged, she still had a chance to live. He quickly took off his police jacket and began to compress the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.
"Help me!" He pointed at Pride, who ran to him. "Keep pressing." He took out his phone and called the police, along with an ambulance. This needed to be reported, besides it was increasing both Amy's chance to survive and their chances to find Hailie and Jayson. "This is Officer Blackwell by the phone," he introduced himself and gave them the address of the cabin. "I need all the units. I have a wounded girl, gunshot in the head, she's still alive. Suspect Jayson Larsen is on the run, he might be armed and having a hostage named Hailie Millis."
Shane continued talking on the phone, while Lust got downstairs and came to Pride, who tried to save Amy's life.
"Why do you care about her anyway? Just let her die." He couldn't care less about Amy. She has hurt Hailie just as much as others. If Officer Good Heart wasn't nearby, he would just finish Jayson's work.
"Hailie would want that," Pride replied. She had a feeling that if Hailie knew that Amy was alive, she wouldn't just leave her like that. Amy was a bitch and maybe she deserved to die, but not like that. Not because of Jayson. If they were going to take her to Hell, they were going to do it themselves. Besides, maybe she won't survive anyway.
"Hailie's not here." For Lust that was much more important. "I knew right away she's not here," he said, still staring at Amy's body. "She's still alive. Otherwise, the bound would've been broken." His tone of voice broke at the last words spoken. "I can't lose her, Pride. I can't. Not like Missy." Lust shook his head at the memory of seeing Missy's little body covered in blood after she received a deadly shot wound. He tried to put it aside, as the image started to shift into the one, where he saw Hailie's death that didn't happen yet. Both of them dead. No, he wouldn't stand it. He felt as if he was about to fall apart just at the thought of it.
"We won't lose her. We'll find Hailie," she said, believing in this more than in anything else. It wasn't Hailie's time. It couldn't be. She was Pride's best friend and now that she was free, they were about to become inseparable. All the amazing things they could do together!
"How can you be sure of it? She's out there, alone, with Jayson. He shot Amy. Thought she's dead. He was intending to kill her. Hailie is his next target."
"If she's still alive then she's probably not with him."
"And what if she is?" He didn't dare to speak what that might've meant. He couldn't even think about Hailie being hurt like that. All he wanted to do was to drag Jayson's soul to Hell and get sure that he'll be suffering forever, the most cruel and horrible tortures.
He knew that this night was the night that Jayson was going to die. No matter what, there's only one possible way of his undoing. He'll be dead before the sunrise.
But as Lust knew from his experience, revenge was not enough. Revenge couldn't bring back what's been already lost.
"We'll find her," Pride repeated.
"We better, because otherwise, I won't be able to-" He broke into silence, trying to keep his emotions aside. Even at his most vulnerable moments, he was trying to hide his sorrow and fear. "If Hailie dies, I'm going to kill the Devil," he promised, making Pride more scared than she ever was, because she knew he was capable of that.
"Let's go!" Shane ended his phone call. "The woods are a big surface to cover, so we should definitely split up. Pride, stay with Amy, please. Her wound needs to be pressed, until the ambulance comes." He was armed and ready to bring Hailie back, safely.
"Why should I stay?"
"Because I have a gun and I'm the only one who can kill Jayson. You're still demons and it's now clear, you cannot kill humans." Besides, there was no way that Lust would stay. And if he stayed, Amy wouldn't survive for sure. So, Pride.
"Let's go to hunt a sinner down," Lust said, while his eyes darkened, until they suddenly changed their color into a red one. He was angry and Pride knew that it was better if no one get into his way. He had no mercy within him, not anymore. Jayson was about to die tonight.
"We're coming for you, Hailie," Shane whispered, getting his gun ready and hoping they won't be too late.
