Chapter Eighty Four: Hailie's Roses

After another morning of walking around the hospital, Molly helped Hailie get back to her room, where their mum was putting new flowers in the vase, and their dad was reading a newspaper. The one with Hailie, Amy and Jayson on the front page.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Mum helped her get back to the bed. It was only strolling for less than thirty minutes, but it tired Hailie a lot. She felt like after a marathon. Laying down and resting made her feel relieved.

"Like I've been walking for hours," she joked, as mum adjusted her pillow.

"Oh, sweetheart." Mum touched her forehead. "You're doing great."

"I wish I would have been doing even better." Or rather, Hailie wished to be back in her full strength. Having a leg in the gypsum was nothing nice.

Someone knocked on the door, making her dad put the newspaper down, like he was thinking that it might've been Shane. He just loved asking him questions about practically everything.

"Come on in," he called, and the door opened.

Hailie took a deep breath, feeling how the heat hit her. It wasn't Shane and suddenly the temperature in the room seemed as if it increased.

"Good afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Millis." Lust came to her mother and took her hand gallantly, to place a kiss like a real gentleman. Then, he came to Hailie's father to shake his hand. "And Miss Millis." He greeted Molly as well. "My name is Lucien Tuls. I'm Hailie's roommate. Forgive me that I didn't come to meet you earlier, but I've had some business to take care of. I hope that your stay at home is lovely."

"Lucien, it's so nice to meet you." Hailie's mother said, giving him a warm smile. "We've been wondering who's the secret man living with our daughter under the same roof."

Hailie felt her cheeks gone red. How embarrassing.

But then her father started to talk, "Yes, we have some questions about you."

Please, not that again. Not with Lust too.

Hearing him pressing Shane was enough.

Molly came to her rescue, "Dad, maybe later? Lucien probably wants to speak with Hailie. Alone." It felt like she could read her mind.

Their father made a face, like he wanted to say, 'Alone? Another one wants to speak with Hailie alone? Not too many boys around her?'

"Alright, but don't leave too soon, because we would like to ask you a few things about the house."

About the house, sure, Hailie thought.

"Of course, Mr. Millis." Lucien watched all three of them leaving. As soon as the doors closed, he turned to Hailie. "I see you're getting better." He smiled, glad to know that she woke up and was feeling just fine. But as soon as he looked at her leg, the anger rose inside of him again. There wasn't a punishment enough for what Jayson did to her. For Lust even eternal torture was too little for that douchebag.

"Honestly, I can't wait to leave the hospital," she laughed with nervousness. "My parents are staying in the house. It's not like I don't trust the seven of you, but I just prefer to be in my house, when they are as well."

Lust stayed in the distance, which seemed a bit weird for Hailie. He always seeks their contact.

"Don't worry about it. The demons aren't in the house at the moment. All of us are too excited, besides now that we're free, this house seems like a prison. Who would like to come back to the prison?" he joked, although there was a piece of truth in his words. Even if demons were stopping by, neither of them wanted to stay in the Bloody Mansion. Lust was thinking that their paths didn't part yet only because of Hailie. They got a little bit attached to her and neither of them wanted to go without saying at least goodbye. "No, we're exploring the world. Honestly, sometimes I feel like in that movie where a guy goes to the future and the world suddenly looks so much different. You can't know everything only from the tv and definitely tv cannot teach you how to feel about all these things. Living out here, it's quite weird."

"You'll get used to it." Hailie really wanted to see how demons were adjusting to this brand-new world. "With time."

Lust laughed, "Right now there are even things I don't know how to call. And definitely I don't know how to use so many of them."

"Well, you just need someone who can show you a thing or two," she replied timidly, giving him a hint that this someone might be her. In her head, she already thought about how funny and heartwarming it might be. Lust probably didn't even know how to drive a car. But then again, Hailie was sure that he preferred just to transfer himself in flames from one place to another but it wasn't possible everywhere.

Lust understood her subtext but the look on his face wasn't what she expected. He walked up to the drawer and looked at the photo frame that her mother put there. It was their family photo, made before her problems with Jayson started. She looked so much happier back then. Lust wanted to see her that way again.

"That's nice of your parents and sister to come by. I'm sure you're going to need them."

"Why's that?" She frowned. Was there something she didn't know about?

"With your leg." He pointed at it. "It's good to have someone around, who can help you walk, bring you things, just be there for you," he said, and Hailie couldn't help the feeling that he was trying to tell her that this someone won't be him.

He wasn't even able to look her in the face.

"You're leaving." She wasn't asking, because with every second it was becoming clearer. After all they've been through, he was going to leave. Just like that. She wasn't sure about her feelings. Was she angry? Sad? Or just disappointed? Maybe all at once. "Why?"

He finally dared to look her in the eyes, but he still stayed in the distance, just as if he was afraid that coming closer to Hailie might make him stay. All he wanted was to come and hug her, but he couldn't do that. And the reason behind his leaving was simple.

"Because I love you." He wasn't ashamed of these words. Not anymore.

Her cheeks had gotten even more red as her heartbeat sped up rapidly. That's how he was affecting her. She felt butterflies in her stomach. And those words, those honest words, she wanted to hear them so much. Now that he said it out loud, she couldn't help but notice that they were making him sad.

"You lied to me in the Human's Kingdom." And it hurt badly back then.

It wasn't getting easier. Letting her go back then seemed like a nightmare to him. And now he must have relieved this nightmare for the second time. He used to think that demons didn't have feelings or a heart, but right now, he could swear that his heart was crushing into two pieces.

"And I would've done it again." That was the truth. It was the only possible way.

"No more lies, please." He already told enough of them from the beginning. "Why are you leaving?" She swung her legs off the bed, paying attention to the one in plaster.

It didn't make any sense. It was supposed to be only better, now that Jayson was gone, and the demons were free. Maybe it was stupid of her, but she believed that Lust will be the one to stay, along with Pride. She didn't expect this after the others, but they were different. They meant more to her.

"I love you too much to stay, Hailie." Watching her getting together with Officer Good Heart? He wouldn't stand it. And he knew that just the thought of them together would be haunting him anyway. He couldn't escape that, but at least he could leave so that he doesn't have to watch their happiness. "I don't know which one of us you love better, but I'm not going to put you in a situation where you have to choose." And there just wasn't any good choice to make. Choosing him was not an option, since they didn't have any future ahead of them. And choosing Officer Good Heart? No, Lust wouldn't get through it if Hailie had chosen this human over him. That would be too much sorrow and misery.

"You're choosing for me," she said with a grudge. That didn't feel right.

She got the crutches and stood up slowly.

"We cannot be together, Hailie." Saying it out loud hurt more than realizing it along the way. "You're a human and I'm a demon. We could spend the next five years together, maybe even ten, but you would be getting older, and I would stay that way, forever. Even if it's not a problem for you, there are other things. We wouldn't have children. You might not think about it now, but it's going to be an obstacle for you later. And what life can I offer you? Everybody around me dies or gets in danger. You could've died if not for Shane or if we wouldn't find you on time. I'm not going to gamble with your life, exposing you to danger. I have too many enemies and more of them are yet to come."

That wasn't a fairytale, where they had their happily ever after. In that one he still didn't believe. And staying with Hailie would cause her harm. One day he would have to leave anyway. It was better to do it now than later. She'll remember him just as a crush from her young life.

Besides, he wouldn't forgive himself if something happened to her because of him. And just a few days ago he got in a serious dispute with the Devil. Lucifer wasn't taking disobedience easily. Right now, maybe he will leave them alone. But this suspension of the conflict might end one day. He doesn't want Hailie near when that happens.

"You can't leave," she said just as if she was begging him to stay.

He couldn't stand looking at how hard she's trying to come closer to him. He broke, and walked to Hailie, so she wouldn't get too tired. As soon as he touched her, there was an electricity spark going through his body.

"I must." He took her by the arm and looked into her beautiful hazel eyes. He could stare into them forever and that felt so weird. He never felt like that about any girl. Now, all he wanted was to protect her. He was ready to sacrifice his own happiness to keep her safe.

Part of her knew that what he was saying was quite reasonable, but the other part just couldn't let him go. She felt like passing out just at the thought of him disappearing from her life.

"After everything, you cannot just leave me like that!" She didn't try to stop the tears that started flowing her face. "You were supposed to be there for me. You-"

He put a finger on her soft lips. They were so beautiful. He desired to kiss her so badly. It was hard to resist, and he had no idea how he managed to stay strong. Everything inside of him seemed to be screaming for Hailie.

"I will always watch over you." He wiped the tears from her cheeks. "All my existence, I was selfish, but this time, I'm just doing the right thing."

Even if the right thing was the most painful thing.

"Leaving is never right!" she screamed, feeling how anger started cutting through her veins. "You've been messing so much with my life and emotions and now you're just leaving like some coward, who can't face the effects of his actions!" She wanted to hit Lust, but at the same time she wanted to hug into him. "And you're not even trying to find a solution! You just gave up on me!"

He hated to hear it, but at the same time it was hard not to agree. He wasn't trying to find a solution, not because he thought that there was none, but because he was afraid that there might've been. Love was making people do stupid and unexpected things. He didn't want to see Hailie doing something she'll regret for the rest of her life. She was better off without him. That's what he decided to believe.

"It will hurt only a little," he promised, even though he knew that for him it'll be much more hurtful. He will never forget her. Oh, how much he wanted to see the smile on her face one last time before leaving. "You deserve what's best for you and that simply isn't me." He kissed her on the cheek, feeling how the pain filled his body, along with the burning desire to take her in his arms and never let go. To kiss her until the world ends, and even after that.

"Lust," she cried and caught him harder.

But her tight grip couldn't stop him. Nothing could.

It would've been easier to feel nothing. Before Hailie, he wouldn't care for anybody. He was glad that she changed him back to the demon who used to be. The one who knew what love is.

"Goodbye, Hailie." Quickly she realized that she was no longer hugging Lust but a huge bouquet of peach roses.

There was a note saying, 'Bought these Juliet Roses at some flower shop in the UK, renamed to Hailie's Roses. My dear Hailie, you're worth everything.'

It made her cry louder as she realized that he was really gone. Just like that.

And she was left alone and heartbroken.
