Setting The Wolf Free - Ch 43

I'm not telling you what the pic is, but you'll no doubt figure it out about halfway through the chapter lol  --->

Third Person’s POV

As Tanzaki falls to the ground, tripped over by Nobu’s Water whip around her ankles, Tozoku flings her handful of kunai at the Mist Ninja. Tanzaki winces as she hits the ground, only for her eyes to widen as she turns her head and sees the kunai heading for her.

Four kunai suddenly shoot out from the trees, precisely aimed as they counter Tozoku’s kunai and send them ricocheting in all directions. Frowning, Tozoku bends her leg back, aiming to jam her knee down into Tanzaki’s back.

Before she can connect with the Mist Ninja however, someone bounds out from the trees and leaps at the red head. She feels something slam into her side, sending her flying to the left with a pained shriek and crashing into a tree, her ribs hitting the bark with a crunch.

Exhaling sharply from the impact, Tozoku crumples to the ground, as the person that had tackled her lands on the ground beside Tanzaki, resting down on one knee. The Mist Ninja looks up suspiciously, only to see a scowling Ashley kneeling beside her.

“Three against one is a bit unfair” the girl comments, narrowing her eyes as Tozoku rubs her ribs and raises her head, one eye scrunched closed in pain.

“What are you doing here?” Nobu demands to know, stomping her foot and glaring at the blonde Leaf Ninja.

“I’m just here to even the odds a bit” Ashley replies, swiping her arm up. As she does so, Nobu’s water whip slices in half, releasing Tanzaki from its grip. Seeing the water splash harmlessly to the ground, Tanzaki pushes herself to her feet and takes up a defensive position, eyes flicking between Takishimaru and Tozoku, who is also climbing to her feet.

The Mist Ninja stands beside Ashley, though they’re facing different directions. She wasn’t entirely sure why the Leaf Ninja had helped her, but she was just going to have to trust her for the moment.

“Well, whatever” Nobu smirks, moving her weight to one foot and placing a hand on her hip. “Takishimaru and I can take the both of you anyw-”

Nobu cuts herself off and casts an annoyed look over at Tozoku, who has begun laughing to herself, head hanging towards the ground. The red head steadies herself by placing one hand against the tree trunk, the other hand still on her injured ribs. That had hurt when she’d hit the tree, but at least she’d found who she’d been looking for.

“What’s so funny?” Nobu growls, narrowing her eyes suspiciously at the Grass Ninja, as the others also cast her wary glances.

“I’m so glad you decided to show yourself Ashley” Tozoku says quietly, though her lips are pulling up into a smile. “You’ve just made things ten times easier for me.”

“What are you talking about?” Ashley asks lowly, also narrowing her eyes at Tozoku. She didn’t know why, but she didn’t like the way Tozoku was acting. She had a feeling that things were about to get a lot more difficult.

Tozoku laughs again, her shoulders shaking, as she raises her head to grin nastily at Ashley. The blonde automatically bares her teeth at Tozoku, not liking the look in her eyes.

“Now I don’t have to go looking for you” Tozoku explains, shakily stepping away from the tree she’d hit. “Killing you won’t take as long now.”

In the trees, Kyoku’s blue eyes widen slightly. That girl was planning to kill Ashley? Surely she knew that even attempting such a thing would get her and her comrades immediately disqualified. Not that Kyoku thought Tozoku had the abilities to kill Ashley, but she still thought it was a bold claim for the red head to make. Deciding to remain hidden for the moment, Kyoku carefully monitors the situation before her, ready to jump in as a surprise attack if Ashley needed the help.

“You can’t kill me” Ashley says flatly, unamused by Tozoku’s statement. “If you even try to kill me, those Grass Jonin will warp here and disqualify you.”

Tozoku barks out a shrill laugh, shaking her head.

Nobody will come to stop me” she informs Ashley, smirking nastily and taking a few more steps towards her. “Peikirin and I have destroyed the Warping Scrolls. They’ll have to make it here the old fashioned way, and whenever they do get here, it’ll be too late.”

Everyone’s eyes widen slightly as they stare at the smirking red head. Had the two Grass Ninja really destroyed the Warping Scrolls? How would anyone be able to enforce the rules and see to it that people abided by them?

“That’s right…..” Tozoku chuckles, seeing the troubled looks on everyone’s faces, “We can do whatever we please, because no one else will be making it here anytime soon.”

“The camera’s though” Nobu speaks up, suddenly feeling quite unsure of the red head before her, “They can still see what we’re doing…..They’ll just get you when this is over.”

“I don’t care” Tozoku sneers, glaring hard at Ashley and slapping her hands together. “As long as she’s dead!”

That said, Tozoku begins performing hand signs. Not giving her the chance to perform her Jutsu, a growling Ashley launches herself forwards, hands clenching into fists. As she looms in front of the still grinning Tozoku, Ashley throws her right fist forwards and slams it into Tozoku’s cheek.

The girl’s head whips to the side, before she rockets to the side, tumbling across the ground at high speed.

“I-It doesn’t matter” Tozoku splutters as she slides painfully over the earth, “This is over. S-Summoning Jutsu!”

As Tozoku comes to a stop, she slams an open palm down onto the ground, as Ashley sprints towards her. The red head grins at Ashley, before suddenly becoming enshrouded in a thick cloud of white smoke.

Ashley skids to a stop as the smoke cloud billows into the air, bounding back a few steps to avoid getting caught up in the cloud. She scowls to herself as she senses Tozoku getting up and disappearing into the forest, when the ground suddenly trembles. Ashley throws her arms out, trying to keep her balance, as she looks up at the other Ninja.

They hold the same confused looks as her, trying to figure out what had made the ground shake. After another minute or so with no further tremors in the ground, Ashley begins to relax a little, barely any smoke remaining in the air.

“What kind of Summoning Jutsu was that?” Nobu sniffs, throwing her hands on her hips. “She didn’t even summon anything! How dumb!”

Remaining silent and on her guard, Tanzaki watches as Ashley slowly turns around and begins heading back towards her, Nobu giving her an unimpressed look.

“Well, she’s obviously crazy” the tall girl mutters, rolling her violet eyes. “I’m going to focus on just getting our stupid flag, instead of wasting my time on you guys.”

“I don’t want to get in trouble with the authorities” Takishimaru agrees, rubbing the back of his neck, “So we’re probably better off not going after people.”

Tanzaki, ignoring the two Stone Ninja, narrows her eyes at Ashley, seeing the girl suddenly pause in her walking.

Ashley’s POV

Hearing Nobu and Takishimaru talking, I slowly turn around and begin walking back towards them, wondering what had just happened.

‘What was that tremor about?’ I ask myself, brows furrowing in thought. ‘And what kind of Summoning Jutsu was that? Maybe she was just pretending to use a Summoning Jutsu to freak me out and use it as a cover to esca-’

I snap out of my thoughts and freeze in place, feeling a faint vibration deep in the ground below me. Now, normally tiny vibrations don’t bother me when I’ve got my Katsuryoku activated, but this feels strange….Like….Like something is travelling through the ground….

Raising my head, I see that Tanzaki is staring at me with narrowed eyes, probably wondering why I’d just frozen in place. I can’t blame her for being suspicious I guess, even though I’d just helped her out. A few of these competing Ninja clearly hadn’t been planning on playing by the rules, and she had just been ganged up on…

I look back down at the ground again, feeling the vibrations quickly growing in magnitude.

“What on earth?....” I mutter under my breath, that uneasy feeling returning to my stomach. Whatever it is that’s travelling up through the ground……It’s not going to be good. It feels angry, wild….Like a train with hundreds of legs surging up from the earth’s core….

“Hey…..” Takishimaru says slowly, tilting his head. “Can any of you…..Feel that?”

“Feel what?” Nobu replies, before pausing, eyes widening slightly. “Wait! The ground…..It’s shaking again!”

“But this time it’s constant…” Takishimaru points out, mouth turning down. “And it’s getting stronger too….”

My eyes widen further and my breathing begins to quicken, as the quaking in the ground grows stronger and stronger, the leaves in the trees rustling loudly due to the shaking.

I don’t normally feel fear a lot, but for some reason, this strange shaking is really unnerving me. I don’t want to be here when the cause of the quaking makes its appearance.

“Ahh!” Nobu cries, her knees buckling from underneath her and causing her to fall over. “This earthquake is getting crazy!”

I jump as something behind me cracks loudly, before a large tree branch topples down to the ground. Small rocks jump up and down as the earthquake continues to grow in magnitude, making it increasingly difficult to keep my balance.

A low rumbling echoes through the air, sending a chill up my spine. Right. Time to leave.

“Kyoku!” I call, running awkwardly across the ground, trying my best to keep my balance. “Kyoku, let’s get out of here! Something’s coming!”

Immediately, the blue haired woman drops down to the ground, landing right in front of me. She has a serious look on her face, eyes troubled. She’s clearly as uneasy about this as I am.

“I don’t know if this has anything to do with Tozoku’s Jutsu” I begin, pausing just long enough for Kyoku to rise to her feet, “But whatever it is, I’m not sticking around to find out.”

Kyoku and I turn to run away, not too worried about the three Ninja behind us. If they wanted to stay behind, then that was their problem.

“You can sense the cause of the earthquake?” Kyoku calls over the now incredibly loud rumbling, that is beginning to sound more like thunder. I nod, scowling with concentration as the ground seems to pitch wildly, like a ship caught in a stormy ocean.

“Sort of!” I shout back, tripping, but somehow managing to keep my footing. “I don’t know what it is, but something really big is travelling up at an incredible speed! We’d be best to try and esca-”

Ahhhhh!” we hear Nobu scream behind us, as something explodes up out of the ground, throwing rocks and debris in all directions. Kyoku and I are flung to the ground from the impact of the explosion, both of us turning to see what had happened.

My eyes widen so far, I feel like they’re going to fall out, as my blood runs cold. My heart beats hard against my chest, my breathing shaky and frightened.

“Wh-What is that?!” Kyoku shouts, pointing up at the frightening creature as it rears back and emits an ear piercing screech.

Third Person’s POV

Kakashi and Neji run at a slow pace, heading up the mountainous path they’d earlier come across. Though still surrounded by forest, the two Leaf Ninja had happened upon a small mountain and had decided to climb up to its peak, hoping they might be able to see which way the Grass Village was.

“Hopefully no one’s up there” Neji sighs, trying not to show how tired he is. “I need a break…”

“Yeah” Kakashi agrees, running alongside the younger Ninja, his Sharingan no longer activated. “We’ve been running nonstop and you’ve had your Byakugan activated for a few hours now. We’ll take a break at the top if there’s no……”

Kakashi trails off and glances down at the ground, wondering if he’d just imagined that small tremble in the earth. If he had felt it, did that mean that someone was up the top of the mountain? Maybe they were fighting, or had set off a paper bomb….

“Kakashi Sensei” Neji addresses, catching the silver haired man’s attention. “Did you feel something just now?”

“Yeah” Kakashi confirms, narrowing his eyes slightly. “I guess I didn’t imagine it if you felt it too…”

“I can still feel it actually” Neji murmurs thoughtfully, coming to a stop, with Kakashi doing the same. Neji looks down at the ground, focusing his attention on the strange tremors going on underneath his feet.

As Neji stares at the ground in thought, Kakashi glances around at his surroundings, now quite high above the tree tops. He had a good view of the surrounding area for miles, yet he still couldn’t see any sign of a Village…

“Hey….” Kakashi says softly, head snapping down to look at Neji. “The trembling is getting stronger. Looks, those tiny shards of rock are bouncing….”

Neji frowns down at the rocks, before glancing up at a straight faced Kakashi.

“Let’s get to the top of the mountain” Neji suggests. “Then we’ll have a bird’s eye view of everything.”

Kakashi nods, remaining silent as the two Leaf Ninja begin running again, though their pace is a lot faster than before. They didn’t know why, but they just had the urgent feeling that they had to get to the top of the mountain as soon as possible.

The two males find it increasingly difficult to run up the mountain however, as the trembling quickly increases into more of a violent quaking, causing chunks of rock to separate from the cliffs and tumble down them.

Whoa!” Kakashi suddenly cries, a large portion of the cliff he’s running along suddenly giving way.

“Kakashi Sensei!” Neji calls, skidding to a halt, his pale eyes widening as the man disappears from his view, falling down the side of the cliff along with the rocks. He watches as Kakashi scowls up at the rocks above him, performing a set of hand signs as he falls.

“Chidori!” the man shouts, blue electricity sparking around in his hand. He throws his hand up, the Chidori slicing through the rock easily and freeing Kakashi from the possibility of having it land on top of him.

Hurriedly deactivating his Chidori, Kakashi focuses a large amount of chakra into each of his hands and feet. He reaches out and places his palms against the cliff wall, wincing as he continues falling, rocks scraping at his skin. As he slows down a little, Kakashi also places his feet against the rocky wall, sticking to the wall thanks to his chakra.

The silver haired man continues sliding for a few metres, before he eventually slows to a stop, hanging precariously from the cliff face, the ground still quaking violently. Carefully pulling one arm from the wall, Kakashi performs hand signs with his bloodied hand, struggling to keep his hold on the shaking wall.

“Earth Style: Multi Mud Wall!” Kakashi calls out, tilting his head back and looking up as multiple platforms of rock push themselves out of the cliff, leading all the way back up to Neji.

Taking a deep breath, Kakashi grabs onto the closest one and pulls himself up, resting on his hands and knees for a moment, to catch his breath.

‘Don’t have time to rest’ the Jonin tells himself. ‘Rocks are still falling down on top of me…’

Climbing to his feet, Kakashi is able to leap from platform to platform, before he reaches the last one and leaps back onto the mountainous pathway. He lands in a crouched position next to Neji, who releases a low sigh of relief.

“I’ve never seen the Mud Wall technique used like that” he comments, as Kakashi rises to his feet and dusts himself off.

“Well, sometimes you just have to improvise” Kakashi chuckles, shrugging his shoulders as he searches for some bandages to wrap his hands in. He didn’t want the scratches to get infected.

‘I’ll have to get new gloves now too’ Kakashi thinks, sweat dropping. ‘They’re ruined-’

Kakashi’s head snaps up at a sudden explosion, the sound so loud, it’s as if someone had set a paper bomb off right next to him.

“What the hell is going on?!” Neji shouts, turning his head to see where the explosion had come from. He sees a large pillar of dust billowing up into the sky, a long way off to the right of the mountain.

“I don’t know but-”

Once again being interrupted, Kakashi’s eyes widen with utter shock, as a huge, black creature looms out of the smoke, rising high above the cloud. It rears backwards, its many sharp legs waving back and forth viciously.

“What…..What is that?” Neji asks in a hushed voice, turning his wide eyes on it, Byakugan activated. “It’s…..It’s kind of faint from this distance, but I can see its chakra…..It’s got a huge amount of chakra inside it……That thing is giant Kakashi Sensei. Most of its body is still hidden underground.”

“Are Ashley and Kyoku over there?” Kakashi asks tightly, unable to tear his eyes away from the enormous, frightening creature. Neji narrows his eyes and stares for a few moments, before sighing, his shoulders drooping slightly.

“It’s too far away” the Hyuga mutters, shaking his head. “I can’t see any chakra signatures from this distance.”

Both Leaf Ninja wince, as the other worldly creature emits an ear piercing shriek, the sound slicing through the air and assaulting their eardrums.

“We’re going over there” Kakashi says decisively, to which Neji nods his head once. “Come on.”

Kiba watches the lower middle screen curiously, wondering why Ashley had suddenly frozen in her walking. She has her eyes narrowed down at the ground, as if she were thinking about something.

“Good job Ashley!” Lee cheers happily. “You showed that girl that you do not fear her!”

“Of course!” Naruto grins at the black haired boy. “Ashley-chan isn’t afraid of anyone!”

“Hey, what’s going on with the camera?” Sakura asks, blinking her green eyes as she tilts her head. “Why is it shaking so much?”

“Maybe it’s broken?” Naruto suggests, shrugging his shoulders uncaringly. “They probably didn’t install it very well.”

Kiba’s eyes widen slightly as the camera shows Nobu suddenly falling down, a scared expression on her face. The middle screen at the top suddenly flicks to Ashley, showing her jumping as a large branch crashes down to the ground, small rocks hopping up and down on the ground.

“It’s an earthquake!” Ten Ten cries with realisation. “The camera isn’t broken, the ground is shaking!”

“Earthquake?” Sakura repeats, casting a worried look up at the screens. “How can that be? The Western border of the Land of Fire isn’t prone to earthquakes…..”

Everyone watches as Ashley suddenly takes off running, a slightly panicked expression on her face. Her mouth opens as she calls something out, before Kyoku appears down on the ground before her. The camera isn’t close enough to pick up what the two are talking about, but everyone is able to hear the loud rumbling, that’s for sure.

‘Angel’s scared’ Kiba thinks, biting his lip subconsciously. ‘I wonder if she knows what’s going on here?...’

A few people in the crowd gasp and flinch away as something ruptures out of the ground, creating an incredibly loud explosion that sends rocks and tree branches flying in all directions. Ashley and Kyoku both fall over, before they are covered by a wave of thick dust. Everything remains silent, until the sound of a girl screaming echoes through the air.

“What’s happening?” Ino whispers, eyes wide as she watches the screen Ashley had been on, now obscured by a thick cloud of dust.

“I-Is Ashley okay?” Sakura asks hesitantly, hands clasped together under her chin, as her heart beats painfully against her chest. She didn’t know what was going on over there, but the pinkette knew that it was bad.

“Kakashi Sensei!” Naruto suddenly shouts, jabbing his hand up at another screen, causing everyone to look over. Sakura gasps as she watches her Sensei fall down a steep cliff, rocks tumbling around him.

Not really caring about Neji and Kakashi, Kiba keeps his eyes focused on the screen he’d last seen Ashley on, his chest feeling tight. He couldn’t do anything to help her now, and he’d just have to have faith in her. Surely she’d be able to keep herself alive….Surely…..

The dust is suddenly blown away, revealing Ashley and Kyoku once again. A few of Ashley’s friends cheer, glad to see her still alive. Kiba and Sakura heave sighs of relief, as Akamaru rubs his head against Kiba’s hip comfortingly. He didn’t like seeing Kiba so worried or upset.

Kyoku crouches behind Ashley, the blonde lowering her hands back to her side.

‘She must have used her Katsuryoku to blow away the dust’ Sakura thinks, feeling strangely proud of her teammate. Her good feeling abruptly disappears though, when she sees the looks of horror appear on Ashley and Kyoku’s faces. The two female Leaf Ninja tilt their heads back, looking up with wide, disbelieving eyes.

The lower right screen suddenly changes cameras, the screen now showing a picture of just what Kyoku and Ashley are looking at.

Everyone in the crowd gasps, with a few people having to turn away and some letting out screams of fright.

“What the hell?....” Naruto whispers, eyes wide and shining as he stares at the flailing creature. “Where did…..”

“Oh no” Sakura whimpers, eyes filling with tears. “Ashley….How can they beat that?”

Aaaahhhh!” Ino cries with fright, whirling around and hugging Choji’s arm, hiding her face in his shoulder. Choji swallows thickly, patting Ino’s back absentmindedly as he looks up at the strange creature.

“That looks like some sort of demonic insect” he speaks up, only for Shino to nod stiffly, hands shoved in his pockets.

“It’s a Giant Centipede…..” he says quietly, feeling bad for the Ninja that are going to have to fight the behemoth of a creature.

“That’s crazy!” Kiba suddenly explodes. “Why isn’t anyone coming to stop this?! How can that girl be allowed to get away with Summoning that thing?! They’re not supposed to be using killing force!”

“K-Kiba-kun” Hinata says softly, tugging on the hem of her angry teammate’s jacket. “A-Areki already s-said that the Warping S-Scrolls have been destroyed……”

“Hinata’s right” Sakura sighs, shoulders drooping. “Grass Village Jonin have already been dispatched, but it’s going to take them at least a day to get there…..We’ll just have to hope that our fellow Leaf Shinobi can hold on until then…”

“Oh Neji….” Ten Ten says softly, sniffing as Lee puts an arm around her shoulders.

“Do not worry Ten Ten” the boy says brightly, “Neji will be fine! He is a splendid Ninja, and is already a Jonin. He was not promoted for nothing!”

“That’s right!” Naruto pipes up, trying to be positive. “Ashley and Kakashi Sensei are also Jonin, and they’re really strong! They’ll be able to beat that thing no worries!”

“I hope you’re right squirt…” Kiba says quietly, only to look up as someone screams in terror.

Much to everyone’s horror, the Giant Centipede had managed to catch Nobu, and throws her high into the air. She continues screaming as she falls, only for the Centipede to tilt backwards and open its mouth, sharp pincers opening wide.

Everyone watches as Nobu disappears into the black hole of the Centipede’s mouth, before the creature throws its head back and screeches wildly again.

On the lower left screen, Ashley and Nobu come into view again, the two females frozen by the sight they’d just witnessed. A pained look crosses Ashley’s face, her hands clenching into fists. She’d have saved Nobu if she could have…..

Suddenly, the Centipede turns its head, its limbs clicking eerily as they wave back and forth. It tilts its head down, seemingly looking at something, only for it to suddenly dive towards the ground, causing Ashley and Kyoku to spring to life.

“Get out of there Angel!” Kiba shouts urgently, as everyone around him begins desperately screaming things out at the screens as well.

I found this Mary Sue test a few weeks back lol, so I thought I'd post a link to it. If you're a Fan Fic writer, then I suggest you take it, to see if your OC is a Mary Sue or not. You have to be completely honest though, or it doesn't work.

Ashley is apparently a borderline Mary Sue lol, so she's not QUITE one, but could be fixed a little. I agree, but it's too late for me to really change anything about her now :/

Anyway, enjoy! :D
