Glade - (NO SHIPS! *le gasp*)
A/N Okay, so now that I'm actually awake I'm starting to have second thoughts about this, but if I quit now that would be cheating. Besides, it is fun. Also, this is based off a book by Zellona called "Runner's Romance", which is a Skybop fanfiction of Skydoesminecraft's Maze Runner series, which itself is based off the Maze Runner movie (I think there's a book too? I'm not an especially big fan). So, I'm writing a fanfiction of a fanfiction of what could be called a fanfiction. Welp. -_-
::-,-::
The elevator-thing I had found myself in rumbled upward as I trembled in fear. What was waiting for me up there? What was going on? So many questions tumbled through my head, I didn't even know my own name.
I glanced upward, and was relieved to see the sky. At least I knew I was going somewhere. I relaxed a little.
Suddenly, the elevator shuddered to a stop, and I realized that the top had risen slightly above the ground. After a bit of trying, I managed to pull myself out of the elevator and onto the soft grass.
I took a look at my surroundings. The first thing I noticed were the huge walls surrounding me. They were easily twenty blocks high, with vines covering them, and there was a thin opening in the one I was facing. There was a forest in one corner, but other than that the area was just grass and flowers, interspersed with occasional trees. The emptiness of it made me shiver.
After about another hour, I had retrieved all the supplies that had come up in the elevator with me, including a live pig which had been quite a bit of trouble getting out. I glanced at the opening and wondered where it went. I was about to stand up when I heard a familiar rumbling behind me. I turned to see that the elevator was going back down, and a sort of metal hatch closing over the hole.
-----
The next day I killed the pig with a knife that had been with the supplies, and cooked it over a makeshift fire I had created with fallen branches from the forest. In collecting the branches I had discovered there was a river running through the small woods. I wondered where it ran from, and where it led.
Last night, the opening in the wall had closed, and today when I woke up it had been open again. I wondered why of was closed only in the night, but today I had decided I would find out.
After eating a little of the pork for breakfast, I came to the opening. Inside was a long path, with walls equally tall as the ones around the area I had come up in on either side, and more paths coming off of it. A maze, I thought. A wandered onto the first path I saw, and continued that way.
After a while, I realized that the sun was rather low in the sky, and the doors did close at night, and I wasn't sure I wanted to learn why. I started hurrying back the way I came, but at the next fork I realized I hadn't been paying attention to where I was going at all. I became increasingly more panicked as the sky slowly darkened, but finally I came back to the door. I sat on the ground, watching the doors close, and I suddenly remembered my name.
Barney.
I sat there for a minute before noticing just how hungry I was. Of course, I hadn't eaten anything lunch and it was already past time for supper. I took two pieces of bread and a bit of lettuce from the supplies and made myself a sandwich along with more of the ham. I didn't go back into the maze after that.
-----
In the next few weeks, I slept under the shade of the trees and built a small farm with seeds that had been in the supplies. Potatoes, corn, and carrots. But there weren't any tools beyond the knife, so I made them by carving some branches into the shapes I needed and tying them together.
One day, while I was eating my lunch, I heard the rumbling of the elevator once again. I stood up and peered curiously at it, moving toward it. Were there more supplies coming up? I didn't really need that at the moment, although, I suddenly wondered, what would happen when winter came? I wasn't sure I could grow plants through snow and frost.
But my thoughts were interrupted as the elevator opened, showing a trembling boy. This was something I hadn't expected, and wasn't prepared for. He saw me and just seemed to get more confused and scared. The elevator stopped, and I decided to say something.
"Uh, are yous okay?"
"I- What- Where am I?" I shrugged, which didn't help. He looked on the verge of crying and I hastily tried again.
"Do yous, um, remember yours name?"
"N-no..." He said. Great, that hadn't helped either.
"Hey, hey, it's all rights! Is didn't remember my names when I coming ups either." This, I was relieved to see, did seem to calm him down a little.
"O-okay... But... What's going on? Why am I here?" I shrugged apologetically again.
"Dos you, um, needing some help gettings out ofs there?" He nodded and I helped pull him out.
"Hey... You said you didn't remember your name at first. Does that mean you eventually did?" I nodded.
"Yes, I'ms Barney," I responded. He smiled weakly.
"I guess I need a name until I remember mine, don't I?" He said. I shrugged.
"If yous likes."
"Well, how about Red?"
::-'-::
A/N ...And later be remembers his name and everybody forgets this moment. Fun Fact: while I was trying to write 'Red' I kept accidentally typing 'Ted'. So, is it seven more now? *thinks* ...Yup. Three down, seven more to go.
