I pride myself in writing cliche high school AU's. But there is a way to do it...right, if that makes sense.

I'm not saying like "Oh you do it the other way you're wrong." I mean to me, this way just feels more natural.

Cliche is another way of saying stereotype.

These stories are normally random chance or the character just happened to be there.

I had a lot of stories like this, and not many of them hold up now.

To me, cliche high school stories are done well when it kinda makes sense.

I know the whole thing is right place right time, but let me explain.

My newer writing style has cliche stories sorta make sense to how the character got there but we know it would never happen in real life.

For example:

In my story Memories With You, Martyn has an older brother who calls him Marty. Cooper convinces Martyn to do more clubs and stuff this year, and Martyn signs up for run crew with Jimmy. They get to the club and Martyn over hears the student director shouting the name Marty (the main character from their play Back To The Future) and he steps out on stage.

The girl thinks he's the guy playing him and Martyn ends up improving most of the scene with Scar (who's playing the doctor). At the end, the teacher comes in and finds out the kid who normally plays Marty wasn't paying attention, and gives Martyn the lead role.

Now that would never happen in real life (at least at my school) but it makes sense as to how it happened.

It's fine if you like those stories that are fast paced and have lots of flirting and oblivious characters before they end up kissing and getting teased by their friends, but it helps if it makes a bit more sense (again, my opinion).

I will make a whole other chapter about how to write high school AU's cause I know there's a formula for it, but there's a bit of a way to get around it and make something interesting.
