Chapter Two
It was five years later, and we were in a world war. What can I even say? It was devastating in every single way -- economically, mentally, physically, physcologically. Theodore got drafted. I felt worried for the entire time he was in the army even though I knew that he was strong. Theodore was always my confidant. I barely talked to anyone else in my family except for him. I didn't know what I would have done if I had lost him back then. Thankfully, his time wasn't until later on.
I had gotten married shortly after the war had begun to a man named Xavier Bridgeham. He was a doctor from New York who had met me at the local cafe down in Savannah, Georgia. I visited Savannah to meet with one of my best friends who had recently relocated -- Annabeth. Her home was located on the gorgeous sandy beach of Georgia. Anyway, I met Xavier whilst I was drinking coffee with Annabeth. She told me about how much I needed to get married one day and how happy she was with her husband. Unfortunately, her marriage didn't last. She caught her husband cheating on her about 3 years later, and their relationship ended in a nasty divorce. I didn't pay much attention to Annabeth's speaking because she always seemed to ramble on and never stop talking (usually about herself). When she realized that I was mindlessly gazing into the outside world from the window, she sighed and asked in her usual high tone, "Hey, are you still there, Cordelia?"
"Oh, yes, dear. Continue on."
All of a sudden, one of the servers caught my eye; it was Xavier. I examined his work carefully, for I was always a deep thinker. I saw that he had some sort of a passion, a desire to do well in his occupation. Even though he was just cleaning the counter, I knew that he was a positive and determined man, and I was right. One year later, he graduated from medical school and became a successful doctor. Once again, Annabeth asked me if I was still listening, but this time, she saw that I was glaring to my side. She followed my gaze and it rested upon Xavier. Annabeth saw the loving look in my eyes, and she started grinning and talked about how great her marriage was at the time. She was 5 years older than me, and she had already had 2 children. They were both so adorable. Annabeth told me about her husband, Richard, and how he was the love of her life. Little did she know what was to come. I once again ignored her and kept my eye on Xaiver. He looked up and saw me glancing at him, and he gave me a warm smile. My heart must have nearly exploded, because at that very moment, he started to walk over to Annabeth and me.
"Can I get you ladies something to eat or drink?" he asked in a cheerful tone.
"Uhh.. I would like a.. Uhm.. Sorry. I'll take a croissant, please," I stuttered sloppily. He looked at me and started laughing. I was quite offended by his smug laughter, but I wasn't bothered for long. I never could stay mad at him for over twenty-four hours -- even since back then. Annabeth suddenly got up and went over to Xavier. She asked him for his home phone number and address. She told me I was interested in him. Oh, Annabeth. What can I say about Annabeth? She was most definitely a unique one. He gave her the information she wanted, and 2 years later, we were married. I would have never thought that I would find my husband through my best friend.
Anyway, that's enough about me. My sister, Ruth, was attending college at the time. She was only 16, but she was always ahead in her studies. Therefore, she was accepted into the University of South Carolina. It wasn't as good as where Theo went, but my parents still accepted it. Ruth was more of a quiet and reserved girl. She wanted to become a chemist, and she did. She always had such a persevering attitude. It was probably because of growing up with a father with dementia and a brother who got drafted into a war. She was so strong. May she rest in peace.
