Family Ties

The table fell silent. Scott's mother and father stared at him as if expecting him to say it was all a joke.

Andrew stood up slowly, walking over to Scott's side, "Come here, son," he said.

Scott looked up at him, and stood up. They stared at each other for a moment, and then Andrew hugged him tightly, holding on to him as if for dear life.

Scott began to cry hopelessly into his Dad's shoulder, sobbing, "I-I'm s...so... sorry, D-Dad. I... I... I'm s-so... sorry..."

Andrew just held him - there were tears in his eyes, too, "No, Scott. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for making you feel like you owe a family to me, when I never stopped once to consider that maybe having a family wasn't what you wanted."

Robin stood up as well, walking over to the huddle, "Scott, my baby. Oh, my poor baby boy. I wish you'd told us earlier. We would have helped you out through the tough times in your life..."

"We better leave this good family to themselves," Boss whispered, and Linda and Vincent stood up, walking into the kitchen.

"I'm confused," Vincent whispered, "Scott talks about it like there was all this pressure on him to have kids, but surely, Linda, you can have kids too, right?"

Linda gave him a smile, "I can't have children. Maybe that's why I can never settle down with a guy. We found out when we were seventeen, and from then on, all Dad ever talked about was that it didn't matter that I couldn't get pregnant, because at least Scott could continue the family line."

"Oh, I see," Vincent nodded slightly, "I'm sorry."

Linda shrugged, "Eh. Never really wanted to have kids, anyway."

"Linda!" Robin called out from the dining room, "Come here. You're part of our family, too! Your brother needs all the support he can get."

Linda smiled, "Excuse me." She slipped out of the kitchen.

Vincent watched her go, then leaned back against the fridge, "Something else confuses me, though," He whispered aloud, even though he was mostly talking to himself, "What's this nervous breakdown Scott talks about?"

Boss looked over at Vincent. Sighing, he said, "It happened when he was fifteen. He was a very serious boy in his youth. Extremely academic. Top of every class. Reminded me of me at that age. Nobody had any idea he was suffering depression and anxiety until it was too late. Nobody really knows what caused it, but one day he just snapped. They found him shaking in his room, a total mess. His grades dropped, he dropped out of school at the end of Year 10," Boss shook his head, "A waste of talent."

"That explains quite a few things," Vincent said quietly. When around Scott, he kind of got the feeling that he was very intelligent, but he never voiced it. Instead, he was silly and acted young for his age - something that can often be a direct effect of a breakdown.

"I think I know what caused it, though," Boss whispered. "Of course, I didn't know until after I discovered he was homosexual, but as you can imagine, 15 years old is a time of great change in a young boy. Around that age, you start developing new hormones. Particularly ones that control sexual desires and attraction."

"Of course," Vincent nodded, "If he realised that his urges focused more around men than women, it could easily have caused a block of denial, a spiral of anxiety that led him to having a breakdown."

Boss nodded, sighing. He seemed about to say more, when Scott appeared in the kitchen. His eyes were red and his hair messy, but he smiled, "You guys can come back out now."

Vincent and William smiled, walking out of the kitchen and into the living room.

Scott's family looked happy. There were still a few tears, but they were gazing proudly at Scott.

"I imagine this must have been a surprise to you, too, Vincent," Robin said, "One moment you think you're staying over for dinner, next, we're all crying!"

Vincent's eyes widened, "Wait- No, I'm not surprised at all."

"Vincent and I are dating," Scott said. "That's why I invited him."

Robin and Andrew stared at him, shocked, for a moment. Then Andrew punched Scott's arm, "Look at you! Here I am worrying that you'll never get a girl, and you've already got a man!"

"He's better at catchin' them than I am," Linda said.

Robin virtually squealed in delight, "That's so beautiful! I'm so glad to see my Scott in the care of someone so kind and loving."

"What do you think, Will?" Andrew looked at his old room-mate, "You know Vincent better than we do. Is he good enough for our Scott?"

Vincent froze for a moment. It was no secret that Boss didn't exactly like him too much.

Boss looked over at Vincent, looked him up and down, then sighed, "I guess he's as good as they get."

Scott grinned, running over and hugging Boss, "Thank you, Will. Thank you so much for supporting me."

"It's okay, Scott..." Will patted his back gently, and Scott broke away.

He slowly walked over and stopped in front of Vincent.

Vincent smiled, looking Scott in the eyes, "I told you you could do it, baby."

"Thank you," Scott whispered. "Thank you for having confidence in me when I didn't have confidence in myself."

He leaned up - in front of his mom, in front of his dad, in front of his sister - and kissed Vincent like he'd never kissed him before.
