Chapter Twenty-Two

Jacob only had the memory of me travelling from the baby's room to the exit, so we had to find that first. Jacob assumed it would be near the room we had left earlier, but instead of returning to it, we went up some winding stairs, which brought us to a small landing. It was slightly familiar to me, but I didn't know the way.

Jacob stood in the centre, then shut his eyes and pointed at the opposite side of the hallway that we were standing in. I took that as confirmation, and I walked that way, where I was brought to some more stairs.

I walked down them and through another hallway until we reached a small black door. Jacob pushed it open, and we walked out.

I was a bit surprised to find nobody stood by it. It must have been a bit of a weak spot.

When I turned around to look back at the door, it was gone.

No door in sight, just the wall of the castle.

Jacob hadn't turned like me. He had just kept walking into the woods. I jogged up behind him and we walked in silence.

I knew he just wanted to get home, so I thought maybe he wanted to just walk in silence. I didn't know how long it would take us, but if he wanted to be quiet the whole time, I could do that. I have always been very good at that.

We had been walking for a couple of hours when the sky started to turn dark, and we made camp in a dense area well hidden from the beaten path. There was only room for one tent, so we used mine as it was easier to put up and pack away compared to Jacob's, which was very fancy with a complicated build setup.

We decided not to make any kind of fire; instead, we just nibbled on the few things Jacob had managed to gather back at the castle or on the walk. We had some berries and a small roll of bread each. It wasn't much, but it would tie us over for now.

Once we finished eating, we brought our stuff into the tent and got ready to sleep. It was relatively spacious when it was just me, but it was a bit of a squeeze with two people and two full backpacks.

Now that I had the time, I changed into something less form-fitting in case we needed to make a quick escape. Jacob had done the same, but he didn't have a sleeping bag like mine; instead, he had a duvet which he wrapped tightly around himself. The nights I had stayed outside told me that he might get a bit cold tonight. I turned to him.

"Are you sure you will be warm enough with just that duvet?" He looked down at it and then down to my sleeping bag.

"My tent is very well insulated and has an automatic blow-up bed, so on my way here, I was quite comfortable."

I smiled. He was definitely going to get cold. I looked down at my bag and tried to think of how to keep us both warm since we both needed to get a good rest.

I pulled my zip all the way to the bottom of the bag and spread it out. It was very big, probably the same size as a double when zipped out. I told him to wait outside the tent while I arranged everything. He passed me the duvet and went out the flap. I left it open while I quickly laid his duvet on the floor. Luckily it was pretty fluffy, so it gave us a good base so we didn't touch the cold floor, and it would keep us warmer. I then told him to come back in, and he zipped up the front.

He laid down, and I threw the sleeping bag over us. "If you get too cold, just let me know, and we can try snuggling up, but it should be good like this." I made my makeshift pillow with some clothes, and Jacob copied me doing the same thing with his own.

"Daisy?"

"Yes."

"Thank you." He said it very sleepily, so I grabbed his hand and gave it a small squeeze, which he returned.

It had been a long day, so I fell asleep rather quickly. Turns out that when Jacob doesn't touch my temple before I sleep, I get extreme nightmares. I dreamt of the days back when I was being tested, just like I had during my waking nightmares. But just like them, I allowed myself to stay asleep. I deserved to be reminded of this.

Don't get me wrong, they still made me want to scream and cry in a corner, but I've done some bad things, and the punishment of the nightmares is nothing compared to what I should get.

I must have screamed or jolted violently as I woke up with a shock.

It was light out, which meant it was probably time to get going anyway. When I looked around, I saw that Jacob wasn't in the tent. I felt I might have had some play in that.

To save myself from feeling any guiltier, I started to pack my stuff away.

Once all my stuff was packed away, I put my long cloak on and popped my head out to let Jacob do the same. When I did, I saw him sitting on a log with his back to me. When I called his name, he turned towards me; behind him, I saw a makeshift fire and a small, skinned animal sitting on the worn wood. Now that I could see it, my stomach started to rumble.

I was already at the log before I knew it sniffing out the food. It was still being prepared, so the smell wasn't too strong, but it still gave off a meaty aroma.

"I don't think I've seen anyone move so fast."

"I am famished. What is it?"

"It's a hare. I went for a wander this morning looking for some food and found it in a trap. I wouldn't have killed it normally, but it was very trapped, and I thought maybe I was doing the best for it. I don't know. I'm hoping this will last the trip, and we won't have to kill other animals."

He looked at the Hare, then went silent. I knew why he had paused. It must have brought back the memories that it brought me.

The silence didn't last long. He must have thought it was going to set me off and instead lifted a bag full of berries.

"I also found these. It might be best if we save them for a snack that we can eat on our way. If I am correct, we are about a day's walk away now. If it's okay with you, I think I'd rather not sleep tonight and just go straight there." He stood up and turned the Hare.

I stared at the Hare for a while, trying my best not to get up and reach for it. It may be dead, but I want it to know that I appreciate it.

After my internal struggle of stopping my impulses of touching, I focused back on Jacob.

"That's fine; you're in charge. I'm just here to help however I can. I am all packed up. I came out to let you pack your stuff up so I can put the tent away."

He looked at the tent and made his way over.

When he scrambled back out again, it was with his bag packed. He placed his bag next to me and continued the food prep. While he did that, I put the tent down and packed it away.

It was great timing because once I was done packing the tent into my bag, the food was ready to eat. Jacob pulled the Hare off the fire and placed it on a piece of flat wood that he had tried to clean up earlier. He had to waste some of the water, but it was better to be on the safe side.

After he was done cutting it up, he placed half of it to one side, allowing it to cool down, and then got the rest ready for us to eat.

It was bland, but it did the job of giving us the energy boost we needed. We ate rather quickly, barely even stopping to breathe.

Once our stomachs were full, we did wait around.

"I think we should get cleaned up and get going. Do you know if we pass some water on the way through?"

As I was talking, Jacob started to wrap the rabbit up in some clean leaves and packed it into his back. To be safe and not cause a wildfire, he stomped out the fire.

"Yeah, we should pass at least two, but we will have to start travelling closer to the edge of the woods." I nodded and picked up my stuff. With that, we were off.

As we walked, we talked a little bit. At this time, I decided to go back to the question I asked after we restored my memories and before my incident.

"So, I don't know much about your family and people. How does your kingdom run?" I may not know much about people, but I had a feeling that talking might help him forget what we are walking for, even if it was just for a bit.

"My kingdom is wonderful. It's not as big as your families, but it's home. We are mainly farmers and fishers. Nearly all my people specialise in minds. But It's not very well guarded unfortunately, you see it's very open due to the farms surrounding it. I guess with the surrounding area being so open, it's hard to be surprised attacked. I can only assume that they were attacked from all corners, which is why my people managed to get overwhelmed. It is no surprise as they would have found us rather easily; you'll see what I mean when we get within 30 miles of the centre. You will start to see the foliage disappear, and we will be left with a humongous open field. We may not have weapons, but we have strong walls, and we could live for years within the grounds as those walls are never coming down. I guess that's why I'm so confused about how they even managed to take my people hostage. It just makes no sense." His face had become more and more scrunched as he spoke. You could see it was really puzzling him.

"I am sorry, Jacob. The people who currently have them have never been very open with their plans and motives, but they always seem to get what they want. I know it's not an answer, but you must remember you are working against the unknown. Somehow, the people from Earth are much more powerful than those from this planet. I lived with them for the last twenty-odd years, and all I know is that every person who lives there is gifted with one powerful ability." I swear, each time I try to see sense in these planets, I'm just left more confused. The real world is nothing like my books.
