Chapter Twenty-Four
When I awoke, I had a pounding headache which made my vision rather blurry. I blinked several times to try to focus on my surroundings. Wherever this place was, I knew one thing for sure, Jacob was near me. It felt like it did back in the castle when we were in our rooms.
Once my eyes had finally focused, I saw that I was sitting in a very colourful room. It was covered in yellow and orange draping's that made the room feel smaller than it was. I didn't get to have a whole look at the room because I felt many eyes on me, which pulled my attention more.
Turns out my watching eyes belonged to a room full of holders. It also included a few other people I didn't recognise and pigeon lady. Just like I had remembered, she stood smiling maliciously. I tried looking around the rest of the room in search of Jacob, but I couldn't see him.
My searching caught the eye of someone with the pigeon lady that I didn't know, who nastily remarked.
"You looking for your little boyfriend?" They obviously wanted to say more, but the pigeon lady interrupted them.
"Now, now, dear, we don't want to upset her just yet. We need her coherent." I just looked at her trying to make sure to have my bravest-looking face on, but the fear she had implemented through the years took over.
The last time I had seen her, I had looked her straight in the eyes with no fear, but now I knew who she was. She terrified me. She had caused me so much pain, and now that my memories had been returned, I cowered in her presence.
She caught on to my change of attitude towards her and came to crouch next to me.
"So, you remember? Well, that makes things a little tricky. But not impossible."
She nodded behind me, and I felt a sharp jab on my back. The pain was excruciating when whatever had entered my body left again. I then felt a warm substance falling down my legs, and that's when I saw the red liquid leaving from a massive hole in my stomach. I knew it hadn't hit anything serious, but it was definitely causing me to bleed a lot.
The minute it happened, I could feel my body trying to heal me, but I forced myself not to heal anything. I had promised myself I would not use any kind of powers this evil woman had forced out of me during my imprisonment.
She had moved away when I had started bleeding, but when the blood wasn't slowing down, she brought her face to mine again. I obviously either did exactly what she expected or I surprised her. I honestly couldn't tell.
"Either you've forgotten how to heal yourself, or you're forcing yourself not too. Daisy, I know you have some willpower, but I also know how easy you are to manipulate. In fact, you are easier to manipulate than even you know. But we need these." She pulled out two very familiar-looking wrist chains. She then proceeded to put them on my wrist.
If I wasn't suffering from so much blood loss, I would have fought against her, but having to stop myself from healing while also trying to stop the blood loss manually wasn't exactly easy.
I didn't feel any different with the chains on; I was still stopping myself from healing. The pigeon lady whispered to herself, but nothing happened. I knew she was expecting something cause her face dropped, showing off her hideous confused face.
As I spoke, I sounded a lot weaker than I wanted to. It didn't help that I was also stuttering as I spoke because I was now getting cold. I knew for a fact it was from the blood loss.
"Wh what was .... Su su suppose to happen?" I knew this woman felt nothing for me, but I did know that my powers meant a lot to her, so when she saw how weak I was getting, I knew it bothered her.
After composing herself, she whipped around, raised her voice, and said.
"These are built the same as the ones she had on previously, right? The ones she had been wearing before you lost her?" They all nodded. She knew the answer, but something was perplexing her and I don't think she understood what it was.
"Daisy, do you know what these chains do to you?" I could now hear the anger was gone, replaced with a confident, cocky voice.
I just shook my head because I knew talking would be hard work.
"I guess with your determination to not help yourself, there's no harm in telling you. After all, you'll probably be knocked out soon enough from such rapid blood loss." She grabbed my shoulders and moved me to a better sitting position by placing me up against a wall.
"But I think before I do, I'll bring your companion in." She then proceeded to lift her head to a holder near the door. He was gone for only seconds when I started to hear Jacob's shouting.
There was rather a lot of swearing and thrashing before he was dragged into the room. I saw him scan the room, and his face dropped when his eyes found mine. I couldn't imagine what I looked like, but I could imagine it was the look of someone relatively close to death.
He was now trying to pull away from them even more. He was thrashing and hitting whatever he could. But it was useless. The holders had such a tight grip over him.
He was still trying to escape when they placed him on the floor opposite me. After looking at me again, he stopped fighting. He must have seen that even if he did escape, there was no way I was.
The pigeon had obviously felt that everyone was where she wanted them because she made a few small coughs to get the room silent, but since the only sound was me breathing, it was a bit silly. Now she was happy; she came back to me and pulled the chains off only to then crouch between me and Jacob.
"I would like to introduce myself. I am Susan, and who are you?" The whole time she was talking, she was looking at Jacob, but Jacob was looking at me almost like if he stared hard enough, I would stop bleeding. But he did eventually pull away and look at her.
He spat at her feet and responded.
"Jacob, the ruler of this kingdom, thanks to your gruesome annihilation of everyone who lived here." He ends by spitting at her again.
I thought she would hit him, but she barely reacted to his spitting.
"Ah yes, that leads us nicely to the reason for these chains. You see Jacob, Daisy only recently acquired some. I don't know much about this planet, but I do know your kingdom is a specialist in the mind. Your parents kindly told me as much before their untimely death." Jacob tried lunging for her, but he was caught before he even left the floor.
"Now, now, Jacob, please don't interrupt me. As I was saying, your parents told me of your kingdom's powers, so I assume you're the one who unlocked Daisy's hidden memories. But the fact you still seem to look a Daisy like a little puppy, I can guess you didn't see the things she did while under the chains."
Jacob wanted to say something but stopped himself. So, I did instead. After all, they couldn't do any more to me. "Ye ye ye yes he di di did." She sighed at my slow response.
"Daisy, please don't waste your breath. Yes, he may have seen everything that you saw yourself do in those chains, but he didn't see anything you didn't. You see, with those chains on, it meant we could take you under our control very easily. You were just asleep, according to your brain, when we did. But that wasn't the case on the night of the attack. But it had worked a few nights before. You see, we attacked this kingdom only days before we attacked your kingdom." I pulled my eyes down into a frown. After she had finished, she grabbed my face and turned my head, pulling my chin up to face Jacob.
"Jacob, this is the face of the person who killed your family. She can't take credit for the other deaths in your kingdom, but she is the reason you have nobody left. I saw as she ripped your family apart one by one."
The look on Jacob's face was heartbreaking. It was like I had pulled his heart out and squeezed it to ash. He had been looking at me as she spoke, but he now moved his eyes away.
Once she got the reaction she wanted, she violently let go of my face.
"I know it's heartbreaking."
She said this with so little sadness I think she might have laughed.
"Unfortunately, when we came to do the same to your original family Daisy, our chains failed to work. We wanted to kill the child to remove the easiest target and then take over like we had here, but you managed to take over your body so when we finally had control again; we had to remove any trace of our plans. It's not good wasting life, but your group failed, and we couldn't let them get captured. You are very violent when you're under our control, so we wanted you to kill the Queen and King and their child. You see, someone in your team was supposed to remove the child from the equation, but they, of course, didn't, and you managed to save him. Once you had given back control to us, we did what we had to. Plan B was to go for a different approach, and we tried controlling you from the inside, but we no longer had any connection to you. Every time we tried to control you, we couldn't. That's when we remembered what the old rulers of this kingdom said. Their son was in the other kingdom. The old King really did do everything he could to save himself." At that, Jacob's voice rose.
"You're a liar. My dad is the most selfless person I have ever known."
"Well, dear, you obviously haven't met that many people. Anyway, Daisy, we decided to leave you for a while. Knowing you, I guessed you two would become closer. You see, I used to watch you stare out that window every day for hours on end. You were such a lonely child, and I knew you'd help anyone in trouble, so once we had left enough time for you to meet and form a bond, we sent that letter. When we got word that it was just the two of you travelling to us, it was the best news we could have asked for. And here we are. Unfortunately, I didn't know that you had your memories back or that the chains would no longer work on you. But I guess we will have to work out some of the kinks once you're all healed and back with us. It should give us time to create some new chains. Hopefully, the second time we attack, we will be a bit more successful." She smiled at me and then looked down at Jacob.
"As for you. You're useless; you've done your part of bringing Daisy here, and now you know what she has done. I feel okay disposing of you." I stopped breathing. Was this going to be an endless cycle? I looked at Jacob as he was pulled up, and he spoke.
"Daisy, you have the power to stop all of this. Please don't let them use you anymore. I don't blame you for my family's death. That wasn't you. That was them; they controlled you and made you their monster. The blood of the people you killed is on their hands, not yours. But if you let them take you one more time, then it will be your fault. You have all the power here." He wasn't crying. He sounded strong. He wasn't trying to save his life. He was trying to save mine.
I looked at him, and I let go of all the resistance I had been giving. I felt as if my wound stopped bleeding, and I stood up, pulling up all the power I held from within to the surface. I accepted my powers, and never had I felt so complete. As soon as I didn't push them away, I could feel my whole body shift. With one hand wave, I made all the holders attack one another. I was making them each think the other was me. As they started pulling out, they trapped the pigeon.
In the commotion, I grabbed Jacob and pulled him out of the room.
"I've never done this before, So I have no idea how long we have or if this is going to hurt, so I need you to hold on as tight as possible." I felt his grip tighten, and I jumped out of the first window I could find. Once we landed, I shouted one word.
"Run!"
