Chapter Twelve

I don't know how long I had slept, but it definitely wasn't very long since the bed was extremely uncomfortable, and my new bedroom wasn't exactly the quietest place to be in. Doors were opening and closing all night, and odd noises kept coming from outside. This didn't act like a lullaby.

Earlier this morning, my new neighbour had left. I knew this because I had heard him talking to the guards this morning. As he moved further from my cell, the voice got quieter. So I just assumed from there.

That all happened serval hours ago, and I haven't even heard the scrape of a door since. In fact, now it's daytime the place is silent.

I was walking around the room, trying to find something to entertain myself with, when the door opened, and four guards entered my room. I quickly put my bag on my back, and they led me out of the room and back up to the main part of the castle. We weren't going back to the room from yesterday; instead, we veered off to the left and entered a room surrounded by chairs, with one sitting directly in the centre.

I knew instantly this was some kind of courtroom. It looked similar to how many of my books had described. Wooden furniture stood at the front, which held podiums like those found in a courthouse. But it had one difference: it was brighter than any of my books described.

Once inside I was directed to the centre chair and told to wait. From there, It didn't take long for the room to fill up with lots of people. I didn't watch as people entered. Instead, I looked down at my feet. I could still see the chains on my ankles, and it reminded me of why I was here. As I was looking, I instinctively grabbed my wrist to feel the chains held there.

I was still feeling my wrists when the doors opened again, and I heard the scraping of chairs as everyone stood up. I didn't even move my head. I just stayed with my eyes trained on the ground.

The people who had just walked in made their way to the other side of the room and must have told everyone to sit as there was a rumble of noise again, then silence.

"Can the prisoner please lift their head?" I don't know why, but I chuckled a bit as it was funny because I really am and have been my whole life. Once I wiped the grin off my face, I lifted my head up and faced the front where the man and woman from yesterday sat very emotionless like before.

"What's your name, prisoner?" I didn't answer straight away; I was a little distracted by all the stares and whispers directed towards me. I was about to answer, but the feeling of so many eyes on me made me feel a little uncomfortable.

So, I composed myself and answered the question. "My name is Daisy, Daisy P."

The man from yesterday shushed the few people talking, then stood up and moved towards a stand before him. "What does the P stand for?"

The question stumped me as I wasn't sure what it meant, but the fact I was put with a group of A's, I can only assume it's a grading system. "I am unsure I think it's some kind of grading system. The people I came with were mostly A's, but I'm not entirely sure." Thinking of my group made me nauseous, but I swallowed it and focused on the man.

"Okay, Daisy P, why did you come into our kingdom, try to steal my child, kill your whole team, then legged it only to be caught hours later out in the open. Why are your actions so contradicting?"

"I didn't want to steal your child. I was only let out of my room a few weeks ago and was sent straight out here with no explanation, just to follow my team and to never take my glasses off. I have been chained up ever since I can remember. When I first took your child, I wasn't in control. The only time I was in control in that room was when I gave him back to you. I maybe your prisoner, but I have been a prisoner on my own planet for many years before this. Giving you your child back was the one decision I was allowed to make myself, and it was the right thing, so I did it, but it cost me a lot, and I have no idea what happened once I blacked out. Like I said before, do what you want to me, I'm not in control of what I am and have nothing left to fight for."

"We won't kill you. You're the first of your kind to have ever been seen in the palace alive longer than a minute. We want to know what you can do. If you are useful, you can stay, if you turn out not to be, then we will send you off without your memories." Well, it's a good job that my memories are useless anyway.

The man gestured to the woman, and she took his place. "If I may ask, why do you look so different to all the people we have seen from your planet. Especially your eyes. I've never seen anything like yours before." I raised my eyebrows at her; I didn't know how to answer.

"I didn't know I looked nothing like the other people from my planet except for the hair, which is due to being underground for the last twenty-odd years; as for my eyes, I'm not sure what you mean? From my answer, you might be able to guess I have never seen my reflection before." The woman looked quizzical but moved on from the subject.

"Daisy, you are done here, and you will now be taken to your room. Your new residence will be on the other side of the castle until we have seen what you can do. There will be a change of clothes for you in the room, and we ask that you get ready quickly; once you are, our guards will guide you to the testing area."

She gestured to the guards near the doors, and they directed me out of the room.

I have moved from being one planet's test subject to another's. I am hopeful, that this room is nicer and has a window in it. So, I can at least have access to fresh air.

After around 40 minutes of walking through the hallway and up many stairs, we reached my room. One of the guards opened the door and directed me through it. "You have 30 minutes to get ready until we leave." I nodded, and they shut the door behind me.

The room was huge and contained a ginormous four-poster bed with teal hangings. In fact, the whole room was pearl white, and the hangings were the only source of colour in the room. It was relaxing and felt so bright due to the window on the back wall. It did have bars on the outside of the glass, but I could still see outside it and open it for fresh air.

I went to the first door on the left and opened it to find an enormous walk-in closet about the same size as my old room. It was filled with loads of clothes. They were all very formal, but now I thought back to everyone's outfits. I shouldn't have been surprised because everyone was in formal clothing, such as dresses and semi-formal suits. I assumed this was because the only people I had looked at who weren't workers were the Queen and King, so it makes sense. Either way, not a pair of jeans in site.

I left the wardrobe and went through the second door, where I found a shiny white marble bathtub surrounded by a pale blue tiled room. The room contained the toilet essentials like a shower, toilet, sink and towels. They definitely have a theme of luxury.

I only had around twenty minutes, so I chose a lovely white thrilly jumpsuit from the wardrobe with some underwear and shoes. I then went to clean up in the shower. When you haven't had a proper shower or access to fancy clean clothes in a few weeks, the feeling is incredible.

Once I got out of the shower, I returned to my room and changed. I'd hoped there would be a mirror somewhere in the room, but there wasn't. I guess I'll never see what I look like. I assumed they would be everywhere due to my books mentioning them so much. But maybe not everyone is as vain as I once thought.

I brushed my hair and left it to air dry while tucking my bag into the back of the wardrobe.

When I felt ready, I walked out the door and was led by the guards to my 'testing area'. It was close to my room, so we arrived quickly.

Once we had got to the door, I was directed into an open room with plain white brick walls and a wooden floor. I walked to the middle, hearing my echo's as I walked.

I was making random noises and hearing their echo's when a young man walked in and joined me in the centre. He held his hand out for me to shake. I was about too, but then I pulled away, remembering I'd never been allowed to shake anyone's hand before. I went to pull my hand back away when I was reminded of the baby. I touched him, and he was fine, so I went against all instincts and shook his hand to greet myself. I felt a slight shock when I did, but it was gone instantly.

"Hi, my names Daisy." He then pulled his hand away, all the while opening his mouth, where he started to make an odd-clicking noise that echoed all around the room, making me smile.

"I'm Jack. From the looks of things, that handshake looked challenging for you! Have you done one before?"

I felt my cheeks start to heat up. I hadn't thought how odd I must have looked when I was extending and retracting my arm.

"No, I haven't." I didn't want to talk about my odd greeting anymore, so I tried changing the subject.

"So what does this testing involve?"

He walked back to the door, opening it to push through a medical bed and some machinery. He placed them in the centre of the room and gestured for me to sit down. I sat on the bed as he grabbed a needle and some tubes.

"First thing, we will take some blood and have it tested. Then I will take a couple of other samples, so it may be best if you lie down."

I did as he said and laid myself down while he got prepared. He straightened my arm and placed a tourniquet around my upper half. He cleaned my skin with an antiseptic wipe and inserted the needle into a visible vein. It was a little scratchy.

After filling three tubes, he removed the needle and wiped the area clean. After he was done, he taped a cotton pad on the place he had removed the blood from. He then removed the tourniquet and gave me a biscuit.

Before I knew it, he was pushing the equipment back out of the room only to re-emerge seconds later. "I now want to check your health. I first want to check your eyes, and then I will check your ears, hands, feet and so on."

He gently sat my bed up and shone a light on my eyes. He kept mumbling to himself as he did it. It then occurred to me that this was the perfect time to ask him why my eyes seemed a big deal to the Queen.

"If you don't mind me asking, why was the Queen so intrigued by my eyes?" To that, he pulled the light away from my eyes and looked down at me.

"What do you mean? Have you seen people with similar eyes to you?"

"Well, I have never seen my eyes before, so I'm not sure? Do they not look like everyone else's?"

He turned around, picked up a thin rectangular mirror, and placed it up to my face. It was the same width as my eyes, so when he placed it up, it meant my two eyes were the only thing visible. What was staring back at me was not what I was expecting.

They were a bright yellow colour. They were so vibrant and different. Everyone was right to be staring in the courtroom. They were unique, and I had never seen anything like them before.

I was just staring when he took the mirror away again. It pulled me out of my daze, and I exclaimed, "Well, now I understand the glasses. They don't look normal."

He gave me a small smile and responded as nicely as you could to someone with unnatural eyes like mine. "Well, not exactly, but what's normal?"

I shrugged, and he went back to check me. I was still a bit shocked by my eyes. I knew they were different, like maybe they were lighter than everyone else's but yellow.

I wasn't expecting that at all.

He wasn't checking for long when another person walked through the door with a few pages of white paper. Jack took them and looked back at me.

"We have very fast labs here." He must have seen the questioning look on my face.

He looked down at the paper, and after each page, his eyes got narrower. By the end, his eyes were almost shut. He shuffled back the pages and then looked back at me again.

"Well, these can't be right."
