Chapter Six
A couple of hours later, I was awoken by a loud Hope. "Come on, we are about to get our briefing." Since I had fallen asleep in my clothes and glasses, I didn't need to get ready, so I just got up and followed Hope out of the room.
The communal area was now full of my fellow teammates. They were all looking at a piece of paper in their hands. Carmen and Hopes papers were thicker than everyone else's.
I went to the table in the corner of the room that they were standing near. The table held a piece of paper similar to the others, but it was very thin. I looked down and saw my name written in bold letters on the front.
I picked it up, excited to finally find out something. But I was utterly disappointed because when I looked down, all I saw was two sentences.
'Do whatever your holders tell you to do. If you sense danger, do not try to intervene!'
Well, I already knew this. What's the point of this paper? It's just a waste. I crunched it up, threw it into the bin next to the table, and sat on one of the vacant sofas. I watched as the others read through their many pieces of paper. I can't be that important if I'm not even given information about the mission. I leant back and let out a big sigh. Would I always be left in dark isolation from everyone else!
After the rattle of papers stopped, I looked back at everyone again. They all look rather chuffed with their wads of paper. Since they were all given information, I thought I'd ask for clarification from them.
"So, can you guys tell me anything?"
They all looked down at their papers in unison and then back up at me. Lucas was the first to speak, "We can tell you the very basics. We are here to drop something off. Unfortunately, that's all we can tell you. Everything else is confidential."
"Thanks, it's better than nothing. Have they given you any directions?" Asking nobody in particular.
This time Carmen answered. "Yes, but it says we can't give them to you." I thought that would be the case, but it was worth a shot.
Deciding there was no reason to ask any more questions since I knew I'd get no answer, I decided to change the subject a little.
"Do you know how long we have left until we are at Elbnar?" Carmen looked down to his wrist, where a new watch was now occupying his once empty wrist. I looked around, and it seemed everyone in my team now had one of these watches. I instinctively looked down at my own to see my usual thick metal chains.
"It says that we should arrive within the hour." After Carmen had read his watch, he clicked a button, and the screen went black. At this stage, I had reason to believe this was just so I didn't see anything on it. But honestly, I don't think I would even try. I am obviously not meant to know anything. What's the point of trying to find out something they are trying to hide from me so much.
I went back to the bedroom feeling very deflated. I may no longer be sitting behind the glass box, but I am still an outsider. I am not even trusted with the information for this mission. I am curious to know how they expect me to help when they give me no information.
Doesn't help that everything I see is slightly tinted due to the stupid glasses I have to wear. So I cant even enjoy anything in their truest form.
I am really starting to miss my room. I know I was locked away, but at least I could entertain myself. I have nothing besides what I was given in my bag, which wasn't much.
As I didn't have much else to do, I just looked down at my hands that shined due to the two bulky wrist constraints that reminded me that I was still someone's property. I had never thought of it in this way before, but I was treated like something they owned and controlled.
I had thought about my freedom a few times but had to accept that I would never be given it. The only reason I was out of my room was because they needed me for some reason. Could I be powerful, or was I a bomb to them. What will happen if they take my restraints off.
Would I just explode?
Was I their weapon?
Could I be?
No, I can't be. They wouldn't have brought the others with me.
But the group is smaller than the other ones I saw.
If I was a weapon, why would I need to wear glasses?
That one stumps me, I can't think of any reason why a weapon would need to hide their eyes. A part of me just wanted to yank the glasses off and just have a look at my eyes, but I don't want to cause any harm to anyone, and I can only imagine that they hid my eyes for everyone's safety.
I must have been staring down at my hands for a while because I was pulled out of my trance when I heard people shift into the room to retrieve their belongings. One of them told me to do the same.
We must have reached our destination.
I grabbed my bag, put it over my shoulders, and exited the ship with my fellow teammates. Once I was out of the door, I was flanked by my holders, who resorted to their original tactics of hiding me from view. I then started to make my way to the exit. I didn't think it possible, but somehow, the holders managed to manoeuvre me through the door without breaking form.
The minute I stepped outside, I could smell something clean and fresh. I had never smelt something like it before. If I could pinpoint a similar smell, it would be the one I smelt on days I was given new clothing or when I had just exited the shower. If I had ever smelt something like this before, I know I would remember it. It was so clean, and I don't know how, but I somehow felt refreshed.
I really wish I didn't have these holders around me. Then I could see my surroundings and try to understand why this place smelt so good. But unfortunately, they were, so I instead looked up to see a cloudless blue sky that reminded me of the many descriptions given in my books. This was what I imagined when I left the compound. This place was exactly what the books had described. At least I had to think that because I only had the smell and the sky to go off.
As we moved further away from the ship, I started to hear the sound of shoes on wet ground and the far-away chirps of birds.
We didn't stop walking until we were deep in some trees. I assumed we were in the forest since the sky was now a jumbled mess of green and brown with specs of blue.
When we did stop walking, we hadn't gone too far. The holders then started to separate and cover my back once again. The minute they moved, I was greeted by a massive clearing surrounded by trees and bushes. Unlike the compound, this place was exactly what I imagined the outside would look like.
I was surrounded by tall slim trees with long hanging branches that fell over the opening of the clearing, so the blue sky was nearly completely covered. I looked around and saw that it was filled with many blonde heads of many different races. The fact that everyone in this clearing was blonde let me know they must have come from the compound. Nobody here had healthy hair because each strand was almost a carbon copy of the person beside them. But other than the hair, they were all uniquely different in some way.
Once we had arrived, we caught the attention of every single person in the camp. I wonder if it was due to the fact there were new arrivals or because of the many holders we had brought with us. The holders that had arrived with us seemed to be the only ones here because I didn't see one holder in my quick first inspection of the clearing.
Had we brought so many because they had none here? They must have been surprised because everyone in the camp started to burst out into whispers. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I could make out that they were looking at the general area of my group and the holders.
My group and holders didn't seem to notice the whispers as they made their way to the open area in the clearing. I slowly followed suit. I could still feel the stares of the many people, but I tried to ignore the burning sensation I was getting. I grabbed my bag and made my way to an empty tent. The tent I chose was the smallest in the clearing, and since I had been separated my entire life, I assumed that would be the case here. I was proven right when a holder passed me a sleeping bag and pointed to the tent I had already started approaching.
I placed my bag and sleeping bag in the tent and then zipped it up. Even though I wanted to hide away, it was probably better to stay outside until it was time to sleep.
More blonde-haired people arrived and set up camp over the next couple of days. I felt terrible just calling them people, but what else was I supposed to call them? They gave me no name; each looked so similar that I needed to generalise them.
During the day, I seemed to sleep a lot. I couldn't remember ever falling asleep, but there were so many blank times that it was the only thing that made sense. These naps during the day didn't make me more rested. It just made me more tired that I would end up sleeping the whole night.
Each night everyone would gather in their group circles and chat. Of course, I was asked to vacate at these times, so I just waited in my tent until I was called back out again. Once back out, I would sit in my chair and watch everyone, in the clearing.
Many would openly show their powers by lighting fires or hovering rocks whilst talking. Some would be running around the clearing, making it extremely windy, which the wind-powered people would use as practice.
It was starting to become very repetitive. Sometimes someone with a unique power would arrive, like this one lady who turned herself invisible or a young lad who made himself into a lizard. It wasn't very often, and it would only interest me until their power started to drain them and they had to recharge.
I wondered why they used their powers so much when they knew they needed them for the coming mission, but I didn't know how these powers worked, so who was I to judge how they used them.
On the fifth day at the clearing, I decided to go to bed early when they normally started their meetings. New arrivals had stopped coming a day ago, and I had seen everyone's powers already. Even though I had been left out of any decision or planning, I knew one thing.
I am still very much a pawn in someone else's chess match.
