Chapter Four

Before Gary had left he told us that we would be fifth in line to do the course. He also said that we could watch. This was because it might take a while, since all the other groups consisted of around eight to nine people each.

Once we knew of our positioning, the group gathered around me and finally let out all the questions I knew they were dying to ask.

Hope immediately jumped at the opportunity; I was surprised I had only known her for a few minutes, and already I knew she would definitely be the leader of this group.

"You know your the first and only real person any of us have seen around here with dark hair. I don't know how you did it, but it's unique. You stick out like a sore thumb."

I raised my eyebrow slightly. Do people have the power to alter their appearances? As I am new to this whole power thing, how am I to know what powers people held. I had assumed I had seen every power in my room but maybe I was wrong. Maybe there was more unique abilities then I had seen.

I turned around to look at one of the holders to check and see if they were listening. As I had nothing to lose, I decided to answer any of their questions as best I could. Even if the answers weren't beneficial.

"Well, I didn't alter it in any way. It's been like this for as long as I can remember."

They all nodded in disappointment. I think they were hoping I had some power that allowed me to change hair colours.

Lucas was the next to ask me something.

"You know you are very unique looking. I don't know how I have never seen you anywhere before. You don't look weird or anything; I've just never seen someone." He obviously wanted to say something else, but he changed it to. "wearing sunglasses indoors before."

The others mumbled in agreement. Again I took another look at the holders. I wasn't their top priority right now, but to be on the safe side, I lowered my voice slightly.

"Well, until this morning, I had been kept inside my room my whole life." They all gave very different reactions to this. Some were in disbelief, and others were shocked. How could I blame them? I didn't even understand why I was here.

After this admission, they all went relatively quiet. Either they were mulling over what I had said or were just working out how best to ask me the next question.

Sarah gave me a small smile and spoke up in a mouse-like voice.

"I know Lucas mentioned it earlier, but why do you wear sunglasses indoors?"

Now this was a question I had absolutely no answer to. I suppose I could take them off, and they could tell me. But a part of me didn't because, for some reason, I wanted to see why first. What if my eyes were dangerous or scary? I wouldn't want to lose human interaction when I have only just gained it.

"I don't know. I only got given them a few hours ago. All I was told was to keep them on and not to take them off until told. As I feel you guys are bursting to ask more questions, I might as well mention the one you are most afraid to ask. Which I'm guessing is my metal chain-like accessories! Firstly, no, they are not a fashion statement, and secondly, I don't have an answer as I don't know why I have them on. Some other answers to questions you might ask. No, I don't know what my power is. No, I don't know why I'm in an alpha group since I haven't even run properly before. Anything I haven't answered?"

I was a bit worried I came off rude, but I knew they would ask, and I knew I had no answers. After all, I haven't got much experience with interacting with humans.

"Well, it seems you are more in the blue than we are." Carmen punched my arm playfully, but there was a sudden noise before anyone could react to his statement.

Carmen was now lying on the floor with his hands pinned behind his back. One of the holders had just tackled him and was shouting 'no' over and over again in his ear.

I expected everyone's eyes to be on Carmen, but when I looked up, all their eyes were on me. It wasn't my fault. I didn't know the holder would tackle him. I knew they didn't want people touching me, but how was I to know that Carmen would.

I'm not a mind reader.

I know I have wanted human contact all my life, but I think I was now seeing the negatives. I could see the blame in their eyes. I didn't want to be let out of my prison just so I could be treated like a dangerous criminal.

After Carmen was safely returned on his two feet, I decided to sit alone on the floor and try keep to myself. I was a danger, but the problem was it wasn't me causing the damage but those who reacted to me. I was the match but not the flame.

Around an hour later, Gary finally called us up to the course. It was still very busy, but we had lost a few people who had left after they had finished their tests.

When we got to the course, Gary explained the rules.

"Okay, so you have twenty minutes to make it to the end of the course. I have changed the course for each group, so this will be a new course for you. As I said earlier, teamwork is one of the main factors in completing this course. As you are a power short, I expect you to work harder in order to replace the missing piece. Be safe, and don't drain yourself too quickly. That will be all. I will tell you when you can start." Gary then looked over at me curiously. "Daisy, it might be easier to perform this course without sunglasses." In my head, I was thinking no kidding, but since he was someone of authority to me, I didn't say anything cheeky I just replied politely.

"I've been told I must keep them on at all times unless one of the people over there tells me otherwise. You could ask them?" Gary looked over at the holders, obviously pondering the idea, but he must have thought better because he shook his head and told me it would be fine but that they might fall off.

Maybe if they break, I wouldn't have to wear them anymore.

"Okay, on your marks."

"Get set."

"Go."

With that, we were off to the first obstacle, a simple ten-foot-high polished stone wall. We couldn't go around it, but there was nothing to grab onto for us to get over. It was simply a flat, boring wall.

"Anyone got any ideas?"

Sarah was the first to ask, but unfortunately, I had no clue. I didn't even know what skills these guys held or what powers they possessed. I should have asked them earlier instead of making it about myself. I only had half a day with other human beings and was already making myself the centre of attention. Here I am doing it again instead of forming a plan with the others.

"Well, what powers and skills do you guys have?" I looked at each of them, and they looked at one another and then up at the wall.

Hope said that she had the power to move objects and or make them float. She also said she was skilled in archery.

Lucas had the power of speed and could slow down time when he ran. He said this meant he was very good in a fight.

Sarah had power over water. Her skill was in holding her breath for long periods.

Lastly was Carmen, and he could fly. His skill was in weaponry.

"Well, I think Carmen is our best shot. Could you fly us over the wall one at a time? Maybe Hope can make it quicker by floating us over as well. That's if you guys can do that?" I didn't want to seem rude, but how was I to know what the limits of their power were.

As I kind of predicted, Hope, got offended.

"Of course, I can do that. Come on, Carmen, let's get this done."

Hope started floating Sarah up the wall. Watching Hope access her powers was interesting. Even though I had been locked away, I had read books, and in all the ones about people with magical powers, it detailed bright, colourful spectacles with magical essence surrounding the producer. But with Hope, I could barely tell she was doing anything. She just moved her hands slightly, and I saw Sarah lift in the air; if it wasn't for the floating Sarah, you wouldn't even know she was using any powers. All the while, Carmen carried Lucas over. Just like Hope, there was no sign of anything, just a floating man.

Once the two of them were safely on the ground again, Hope floated me up and over. Then Carmen brought himself and Hope too. It didn't look too hard on them from the outside. But you could tell they were drained slightly, but it only seemed enough to make them a little out of breath.

I really need to learn more about these powers and how they work.

Once we were all on the other side of the wall, we were faced with a large pool that was so deep I couldn't see the bottom. On the opposite end was a platform leading on. I don't know why, but I had a feeling if we went in and started to swim, we would drown. I probably would, as I don't know how to swim.

I also had a feeling we probably couldn't go over it like the last one.

In the pool, there were flat stones that floated around the water. They were moving all over the place.

A mousey voice from behind me spoke up. "Now, this is my speciality! But I may need your help, Hope, to keep the stones steady." Sarah positioned herself and stared at the water for a bit, and then formulated a plan.

Her plan involved the three of us going before her and Hope jumping from stone to stone. Hope's job was to just keep each stone in position while Sarah would calm the waters and help keep the stones steady for Hope.

Like the other two, you could barely tell Sarah was even wielding power. If Lucas also does this when I see him use his powers, I'll know everyone is the same.

Sarah's plan worked, but it had definitely drained them both considerably, and they looked a bit pale. As I know very little about these powers and their limitations, I was unsure how long their recovery period would be. But one thing I was sure of was that we didn't have that much time left on this course.

The next obstacle was a bear-tiger hybrid that looked to be around eleven feet tall and six feet wide. It had piercing red eyes and shiny white teeth. It stood in front of a marble pillar that seemed to hold a button on top of it. This must be the last obstacle and, indeed, the hardest. We had no weapons, and most of our team was drained. The only people who hadn't used any power so far were Lucas and me.

Before we could formulate a plan, Lucas sped off in its direction. He was obviously going for the button, but the creature seemed to be able to see his quick moves because, within a matter of seconds, we saw Lucas flying right back at us. He landed with a bang but still managed to make a sarcastic remark.

"Well, that didn't work."

I looked back up at the beast, trying to work out a solution. I really wish I knew what powers I had because I feel so useless. Nearly my whole team has done something to help, and here I am, trying to come up with ways for them to help even more.

Then suddenly, I had an idea, but I wasn't sure if it would work or if they would get involved.

"I have an idea, but it means you may all need to use your powers," I explained my plan, and they all reluctantly agreed, seeing as nobody had anything else.

In order to distract the beast, we had Lucas run to his left, pulling him away from the button. We did our best to try to keep the beast away. But to keep Lucas safe, we had Hope use what power she had left to keep the beast at bay the best she could.

Sarah was ready with floating water in hand to cover the hybrid should anything go south. Even though it wouldn't do much, it meant we would have enough time to all get away safely.

Lastly, Carmen would fly up to the button and press it as quickly as possible. I could tell he was cautious and worried he didn't have enough energy to get up there. I couldn't blame him. He had used a lot in the first part. So I put my hand on his shoulder as a sign of comfort.

The second I touched Carmen, I felt a warm heat radiate off my body and I pulled away when I got a shock in my fingers.

I don't know why, but I knew it wasn't because I felt an affection for Carmen but something else. Almost like I was emitting something somehow. I couldn't fight the feeling that I was somehow sending some kind of energy towards Carmen.

Almost confirming my suspicions, Carmen shot up in the air and towards the button. Once pressed, Carmen rushed back and looked more energised than he did before we had started this test. I didn't even have time to start working out what had happened because I heard a popping noise, and the obstacles around us crumbled away.

In the distance, we could see Gary making his way towards us.

"Well done. Fastest time so far. That took you just over fifteen minutes to complete. That's nearly half the time of the second quickest. I am glad you're my Alpha team. Speaking of which, we have some important things to go over. If you could all change into your outfits and meet me in my office in an hour, I will review your tasks."

With that, he was off in search of the next group.

We then all started making our way back to our clothes. I knew I had a costume, so I was curious to see what the others had to wear.

On our way over, Carmen seemed to be in very high spirits.

He was now floating back to the lockers. I wasn't the only one to notice this, as Hope looked up at him and made a comment.

"Carmen, are you not super drained right now? We just used a lot of powers in one go. You need to rest." Carmen landed gracefully and started to giddily hop.

"Trust me, this is the most powerful I have ever felt. It feels like I have more power inside me than ever before. Like I won't run out of power for a while. It's amazing."

Hope said something about him being crazy and stormed off. The other two just looked exhausted. I don't think they realised what was going on around them.

All I could think was I hope Gary doesn't send us out on the mission today.
