Chapter 4

Me and the other servals of the tribe Wild barely made it out, chasing out the remains of the tribe Tree. A lot of the corpses lining the camp were of Tree, not just River. The battle had no positive outcome at all. Just bloodshed and sorrow. After the battle, River and Willow stood next to each other and glanced at me, then turned to Golden.

"We must see your son for a second," River announced. I ducked, surprised. Oh no please don't make me special I can't do this! I wailed aloud. I'm just a hungry serval with a happy life, a mother and a father and a place to stay. I can't keep doing this!

"Why?" Wild snapped. "Is it because of Willow, Pine, Snake, Fox, and Brush? Because newsflash, they're all dead."

River winced. "Yes. Our tribe is... not taking this well. We know Brush is dead, you shared that at the meeting. But we don't know where Snake, Willow, Pine, and Fox are, do we? We could still find them," he told Wild frantically, his eyes growing wide.

"They're all probably dead," Wild sneered. "Fox was an idiot who only cared for himself. That's why Brush left him at their temporary camp. I bet he starved. Shadow went out alone, looking for Brush, injured. There's no way she could come back. Pine would be too busy worrying that he wouldn't be able to see danger, or he would've been executed for his treachery," he continued ruthlessly, watching River wince at every word.

It was horrible of wild to tell the tribe River's leader those horrible things. I need to stand up for him, and more importantly give the two hopeless servals something to think about, even if it would make me the center of attention.

The only reason I didn't want to be that already is because I was afraid that I would mess up and no cat would ever talk to me again. So I sighed and stepped forward. "It doesn't matter if these cats are dead or not. I want to talk to them if they want to talk to me." It might mean a meal, I thought about putting in, but held it back, trying not to seem greedy.

Wild sniffed, but turned away. "Fine. We will wait at the border. Fawn, we want you back as soon as possible. River, make it quick!" He called, bounding away, his servals hard on his paws.

Willow wrapped her tail around him and  hurried into her father's den, River in front of both of them. "Fawn, Tree, Wild, Swamp, Weep, Flower and I all received a message at our meeting from the odd immortal cat that no one unrelated can talk about. It spoke of a tribe of servals far away called Forest, led by Snakes, Pine, wit, and serenity, which the first two are a direct call to cats from not too long ago named Pine and Snake. They were very important to the different serval tribes," River explained curtly.

"They also spoke of the unsuspecting 'Fawn' who would lead us. Now this was a while ago, and Golden was hyped. He said that Brush had mentioned the name Fawn to him for kits before she was killed-" I cut into his explanation.

"What do you mean?" I asked, completely confused. "I get that I'm like the chosen one or whatever but like Shadow was my mother... right?? Not Brush. So why was she mentioning me?"

The long furred serval winced. "TI nodhat's the thing. So, y'know how you don't really look like Golden or Shadow? Well, that's because Brush and Pine are your real parents," River told me quietly, lowering his head. "They snuck off to be together, since Brush was from Wild and Pine was from Tree and they were in love, Pine disappeared, Brush and Fox were alone, Brush left with you, left you at camp, then died shortly after," he explained quickly.

It hurt, to be told that the cats you loved were lying to you. But the emotion I really felt was relief. Now I didn't have to live up to the expectations of my father or my mother, who was an incredible hunter. What I didn't know is that I would have to live up to some WORSE expectations after this "chat".

"Oh." I said, then turned back to River. "Go on."

His eyes widened in surprise, but then he continued. "-and she said it was just a, and I quote, 'gut feeling that the name Fawn would be important.' And it was. Apparently, you're part of an ancient prophecy or something-at least we think so. So..." He paused, turning to Willow. "We thought Willow could take you, the other trainees of Wild, and a trainee from the other tribes."

I nodded. "So you're saying we're going to the secret other 'Forest Tribe' with a whole bunch of teenagers to uncover the lost past of these random cats who disappeared?"

Willow turned to me and nodded, a grin spreading across her face. This could be the chance to prove myself, I realized as she stretched out her paw. Hesitantly, I took her paw and shook it slightly. It was about time I got a new name... and some food.
