I was somberly sitting on my roof with my arms wrapped around my knees and legs crossed at the ankles. Watching the skies didn't bring me the peace like it usually does. I rubbed my face to get rid of all the sticky residue of my now dry tears.
Chang's harsh words today really pulled a chord in my heart and I was really hurt. I've always had an idea that people would be sniggering behind my back, for wanting them to refer to me as Calamity. That thing, however, didn't slow me down nor did it dull my mood.
Although it hurt when it came from a guy I have a crush on. I'd thought that out of everyone, he would empathize with me better since he prefers to avoid almost everyone.
My phone reverberated through my pajama pockets and I retrieved it half-heartedly. As usual, I ignored the Coachella group that was bursting with messages. Sighing, I placed it beside me and started rocking my body back and forth.
Just when I thought that I could bask myself in silence, my phone pinged with another message. Shaking my head, I ignored it but it made another noise. I growled, deciding to mute the group and grabbed my phone roughly.
I was shocked though when I saw two messages from 2 Brain Cells. I snorted at my own pun.
2 Brain Cells:
Just a friendly reminder. 6 days to go.
2 Brain Cells:
On a second thought, are you even looking for me or have you accepted your defeat?
I closed the screen without giving him any reply because I wasn't in the mood to play along with him. Spinning my phone between my fingers, I couldn't help but think of who 2 Brain Cells could be.
'Is it Blake? Because he's always been friendlier towards me as compared to the others. Seems plausible but he didn't react accordingly when he'd smiled at me today on the grounds.'
Another ping jolted me out of my reverie. Curiosity got the best of me and I opened Distap to see another message from 2 Brain Cells.
2 Brain Cells:
Did you just give up on the opportunity of not replying back to me with something sassy and leaving me on "read"? And no, I'm not offended -_-
Yours Truly:
I don't care who you are anymore. You win, I lose. Cool?
2 Brain Cells:
Ouch. Again, I'm "not" wounded at all.
Alright. How about I send you my face? Face reveal sounds good, yeah?
I stopped breathing when I read his message because the offer was too tempting to decline. Before I could stop myself, my fingers began typing as I forgot all about the challenge I'd accepted.
Yours Truly:
Do it.
2 Brain Cells:
Hahaha. Gotcha. Lured you in. Anywho, I forgot to add one tiny detail. Face reveal only when you make a correct guess.
Despite myself, I grinned at his cuteness. I was about to give him a reply when a noise caught my attention. Frowning, I crawled a bit to the edge of the roof before pocketing my phone to see a hooded figure standing just below me.
My breath hitched when I saw them waving at me. It was uncanny to see someone unknown inside my house. I couldn't make out their face in the dark either. "It's me Chang!" He shouted and I recognized his voice instantly.
"Huh," I mumbled to myself smugly before sitting cross-legged and looking down at him. "So what?"
"Can we talk?" He cupped his mouth. I couldn't see his expression but his voice sounded… guilty?
"No, we cannot. Now leave. No, wait! How'd you know that I live here?" I yelled, narrowing my eyes at him. I just hoped that my mom couldn't hear our weird screaming match.
"I have my ways," he said complacently and I could imagine him smirking.
"I swear to God, I'm gonna kick Ashton's ass so hard that he'd be able to leave the continent without a passport. And I hope that he doesn't see the stars in front of his eyes to distract himself either," I grumbled.
Chang started laughing and I realized that he might have possibly heard my words. However, that didn't faze me. What stupefied me more was that he was actually laughing.
'I have never seen him smile let alone hear his laugh.' And the worst thing was I couldn't even see his face clearly. My heart was galloping like a wild beast inside my chest. Listening to his croaky laugh brought out an involuntary smile on my face for the first time today.
"I can literally picture that!" He continued cackling. That was when I remembered my anger towards him and his equally crude remark towards me.
"You know I can give you another scenario to picture behind your eyes," I snapped with sarcasm lacing my voice.
"Sure!"
I frowned because I thought that I had clearly inserted the sarcasm but I guess it didn't reach him down there. 'System failure,' I thought jokingly. "I am gonna lift your leg and sway you from left to right like a fly. How about that?"
There was a long pause from him that I almost thought he must have left. When I glanced down, I saw him looking up at me. This time I could see his face because the hood wasn't covering his head anymore. His features were schooled into that of a solemn look.
Chang gestured something with his hands before pinching his ears.
"What was that?" I asked him dryly.
"Can I come up there?"
A devious plan formed into my head and I decided to play with him and make him suffer a bit. "Fine."
"Finally! Good. Um…" He cleared his throat awkwardly. "Can you open the door to let me in?" He crossed his arms to hide his embarrassment.
"No." With that said, I scurried back inside my room with a sly smirk. I could hear him protesting with the way he was shouting angrily. I just hoped that he wouldn't leave as I quickly searched for a thick rope that I had stacked in my bedside drawer.
I had it so that I could easily sneak out of my house at night to get some breather. Binding it in my hands, I went back on the roof to greet a very angry looking Chang throwing daggers at me.
"That was honestly not so cool!"
"Serves you right, dontcha think?" I rolled my eyes before tying one end of the rope to a pole. Once I was done, it dangled in front of his face. "If you wish to come up here then that's the only way. No other door is open for you," I told him adamantly.
I thought that he might leave after my hostile words but he was even more stubborn than I was. He clutched the rope and began climbing effortlessly.
I resisted the urge to smirk victoriously and sat down. I couldn't believe that I was feeling all giddy even when he basically spewed some impertinent words at me. 'Shouldn't I be raging mad at him? Why does a crush have to crush my resolve? Stupid crush.'
That's when something hit me. Chang, the guy who would hardly look at me, let alone talk and show any expression, had done all of that. I witnessed each of his unseen countenances. A smile lit up my face when the reason behind it all clicked to me.
