∆Chapter 02∆
After much contemplation, I realized that my visible username on Distap is Calamity. The reason why 2 Brain Cells was able to figure out that the girl online is also me the moment we started talking.
I got up from my place at the bottom of the bleachers as Destiny approached me with a complacent smile. "Cassidy, Holly, Talia and Brielle won't be able to walk for some time." She giggled.
"Serves them right," I agreed, grinning. Today's cheer practice was exceptionally fun to watch as the group of four - it's how Destiny and I refer to them mostly - got the most agile exercises.
"True." She nodded her head. A few seconds passed when she began giving me furtive glances. "Um…" I raised an eyebrow at her because her countenance was full of nervousness. "Uh…"
"Spit it out already, Des." I rolled my eyes.
"Just don't get mad at me," she warned me with wide eyes.
"It actually has an opposite effect on me. Makes me wanna be even madder."
"You see, uh, I mighta kinda sorta musta… must have, I mean must have registered your name to rap on stage during Coachella," she said the last part in such a low voice that I had to strain my ears.
The moment I understood it, my mouth hung open. "What? Why?" I glared at her.
"Hey, babe. Yo, Ser." Ashton beamed, coming out of nowhere and stood beside Destiny.
"You better protect your girlfriend because I am gonna kill her," I said teasingly and narrowed my eyes.
Ashton watched the whole exchange with wide eyes and started backing away when Destiny forcefully wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "It was actually Ash's idea!" She exclaimed.
"Oh." I smiled at them softly. "What a cute pair."
My words literally relaxed their tense body. They began smiling as well when I slapped both my hands on their shoulders.
"Now run for your life." And they did while I chased behind them like a bull. "Next time try asking me, y'all dumb breadcrumbs!" I yelled.
Increasing my speed, I gained in on them and pulled them back by clutching the back of their shirts. "I am sorry."
"I'm sorry too."
"You better. So do me a favor and cancel off my name from that list. Cool?" I told them nonchalantly while Ashton gave me a sheepish smile.
"Well-"
"Ashton!" Someone called out from a distance.
All three of us turned towards the source of the voice to find Chang jogging in our direction. My eyes almost bulged out of their sockets as he came towards us.
In a few steps, he was standing beside Ashton, breathing heavily. As expected, his face held no expression.
Su Chang Lee, although he prefers to be called Chang, had transferred to our school during the senior year itself. However because of his normal yet a slight lilting accent, I could tell that he's been in America for quite some time now.
He's considered the heartthrob of our school because of his gorgeous Korean features. I've had a crush on him ever since I'd first seen him but he completely ignores everyone. He doesn't care about the girls who flock around him for his attention either. The only person he ever talks to is Ashton because he's the quarterback of our football team.
Like usual, he didn't even look at me nor Destiny.
"Chang?" Ashton asked, puzzled. "You need something?"
"Actually, yes. My bag. It's still with you," he said nonchalantly, pointing at Ashton's shoulder.
I looked at him and that's when I noticed two bags slung on his shoulders. Maybe, I was too mad at my friends to notice that.
Ashton looked ashen and hastily handed it over to Chang with a smile. "I am sorry, it actually slipped my mind. I mean I was very excited to see Des and Ser here and left the spot," Ashton apologized and explained.
Chang nodded without glancing at us which made me frown automatically.
"Why'd you have his bag in the first place?" Destiny directed her question towards Ashton before winking at me. The only other person who knows about my crush on Chang would be her, not even Ashton.
"He forgot something in the locker room and asked me to hold it for him because I was waiting outside anyway. Was helping out a friend." With that, he put an arm around Chang's shoulders and grinned.
"I gotta go," I announced suddenly. Ashton and Destiny gave me strange looks so I just shrugged. "Got some work," I said vaguely but truth be said, I just wanted to avoid Chang because he was making me feel angry for some reason.
'How can someone be so robotic? And why's it affecting me anyway?'
It was just at that moment Chang decided to look at me as if reading my thoughts. My breath hitched but I stared back at him fearlessly. It was the first time our eyes met. He was the one to look away first. There was not an ounce of emotion on his face but still I could feel my heart thumping.
"Okay." I was snapped out of my trance and nodded my head. Without another word, I walked out of the practice grounds and soon out of the school gates.
Shoving my hands in my pockets, I walked the distance towards my house. My head was filled with suffocating water to the brim. It's never empty and never calm. Sometimes, I fear that it might be dangerous to let it ward off in every direction. Till date, I haven't been able to tame my monstrous thoughts.
I stopped short when my eyes fell on my huge house or more like a mansion. I instantly felt better when the comforts of my home enveloped me. Outside world just brings out the worst in me somehow.
Clutching the straps of my backpack, I climbed upstairs and inside my room. Like any other room in the house, mine is quite big too, overlooking the pool from my balcony doors. Contrary to the belief, the walls are all painted in lavender with the whole aurora milky way designed on the ceiling. My king sized bed was pushed against a wall adjacent to the balcony.
However, my favorite is the other side of the room where all my kickboxing equipment is stocked.
Kicking off my shoes and tossing off my backpack on the bed, I quickly changed into boy shorts and tank top. Before going at it, I decided to put on my favorite playlist, consisting of rap songs. 'Until It Breaks' started bursting through the speaker and I sighed in content. I put on my boxing gloves and started punching the bag vigorously.
Each passing second, my kicks and punches took to a more ferocious and aggressive level. Sweat was trickling down my face but I couldn't care less. I needed to get rid of this permanently stuck nagging feeling in my chest.
My body started trembling, signalling me to take a break. I sat down on my haunches and wrapped my arms around my knees, inhaling a sharp breath.
I stood up only when I heard my phone ping with messages. Three from Detective Caleb while the Coachella group was bursting incessantly.
My heartbeat skyrocketed when I saw Caleb's message notification because he never sends me messages, it's me who asks about the updates. Gulping, I ignored all the other messages and decided to open his text.
Detective Caleb Till: (at 5.33)
Hey, Young Lewinski. Hope you're doing well!
I have something to tell you.
Detective Caleb Till: (at 6.21)
Since you're not available, I'll just let you in on this. We might have had a lead on our guy. Not sure, just an assumption but I'll keep you updated.
My knees gave up and I started running my hands through my hair with shaky fingers. 'Might have had a lead on our guy.' These words kept on echoing through my mind like a broken record.
There was a knock on my door but I kept on staring at the balcony doors and towards the now dark skies. I clenched my teeth when the knocking didn't stop. "Serenity," Maia called out in her soft voice.
"Yeah?"
"Dinner's ready. Mrs. Lewinski is waiting for you." I heard her muffled voice but I didn't move from my place. "Are you there…?"
"I'm not hungry, Maia. I'll be sleeping in," I replied in a monotone. It's not an unusual thing for me to skip dinners and every night I do that, there's a cooked meal on my bedside table because my mom knows me well. She knows that I have a strong appetite and end up with a growling stomach in the middle of the night.
With slow steps, I walked toward the balcony doors and opened them. It's not exactly a balcony because it doesn't have a barricade. I would call it more like a roof.
Sitting on the roof cross legged, I continued gazing at the skies. A few rogue stars could be seen while my vision started blurring. Soon enough, the dam for the day was broken. A silent sob escaped my lips and I tapped my chest softly to make the pain go away.
"You're a weapon and weapons don't weep." Those words travelled through my mind every time I'd start crying. I don't know if these whispered words were conceived from my dreams or if someone really blew them in my ears. I could never tell but whatever the case it kept me going.
"You're a weapon and weapons don't weep."
After an hour or so, I pushed myself back inside and onto my bed. My phone was going off with messages so I absent-mindedly checked them. Destiny had messaged me to check up on me so I gave her a simple reply to not worry her. However, I raised an eyebrow when I saw 2 Brain Cells' message.
2 Brain Cells:
Coachella couldn't stop tinkling my phone because everyone's asking for you. How about you give them a reply and let me and my phone live in peace?
Yours Truly:
I would but I like to see you suffer more. Oh, and there's a thing called 'mute notifications', 2 Brain Cells. *smirks*
Or were you just finding an excuse to talk to me? Or maybe concerned about me?
2 Brain Cells:
You wish. *rolls eyes*
