Chapter 4: Eleanor the Fairy
Janessa's view
"What's our first class, Miss I-am-the-daughter-of-the-King-therefore-I-can- ensure-all-my-friends-have-classes-together?" I ask, elbowing Isla expectantly.
Her eyes flash as she smirks. "Your first class is History. Mine is---"
"History?"
Isla shakes her head, looking way-too-innocent. "How To Whisper In The Back Of A History Classroom, Featuring you---my two best friends."
"Yes!" I crow, grabbing her hand and Max's. "LET'S GO! WE DON'T WANT TO BE LATE FOR OUR FIRST DAY BACK!"
"You're milking it a little too much." Max stage-whispers as the crowd gives us a side-eye.
I shrug. "I don't care."
"Hey!" Max's eyes light up. "Isn't Serene starting this year? I just saw her a second ago---Where did she go? We can go say hi!"
"Because that's not at all a sneaky way to talk to Brietta. Reenee's probably already on her way to her first hour." I roll my eyes, following my friends towards the wide double-doors. "Also---guess what class she's taking this year? Magic."
Isla's eyes grow wide. "Why's she taking Magic? That's only supposed to be for Sophomores and above, unless you have super powerful magic that needs training early!"
"She does." Max reminds Isla.
"I know that." Isla amends. "I only meant---doesn't she have hers under control already? Like you, Jan?"
I shrug, not really listening as I watch a golden-haired girl in a green tutu skip over the lawn, literally over the lawn. Wherever she steps mid-air, golden and blue sparks appear.
(Better look at wand because it's just so pretty I love it)
I point. "Eleanor."
Isla follows my finger. She whistles. "Wow, I wish I could do that. All I can do are incantation spells."
Max watches her land softly in front of the doors, and neatly spins in a circle, twirling a golden wand with vines wrapped around it in her delicate hands.
"Okay. I'm impressed. And confused." Max declares, following her inside.
"Yeah, she was supposed to come with Finn." I say.
"That is not why I'm confused." Max snorts.
"Hi, Elea!" I shout, and she turns toward us, beaming.
"Nessie!" She flounces toward me, hugging me tight. "It's been a long time, hasn't it?"
"Yeah, it has." I laugh. "You look 'bout the same."
"So do you." She agrees, twirling her wand.
"Still love fairies?" I ask, poking her shoulder teasingly. Her grin grows as she nods ecstatically.
"Mm-hmm! I met a Will-'o-the-wisp this summer for the first time, with Finn, while we were exploring, and that wasn't the same, but it was close! It lead us to a ring of mushrooms, and I wanted to stay and see if we could find out if it was a fairy circle, where we could dance, but Finn didn't want to dance, and we had to get home, so I left it. But when we went back, it was gone!" She says in a hushed voice, then giggles. "Maybe it was a fairy circle!"
"I'm sure it was." I laugh. "What would you have done if it was?"
"Danced, obviously." Eleanor says, then starts twirling around the grass, executing perfect ballet moves my clumsy self couldn't hope to even come close to.
"Hey---how'd you get a wand so early?" Max asks abruptly. I elbow him in the ribs, but he still looks at her expectantly.
"Mummy gave it to me." Eleanor says airily, stopping her dance and sticking her wand behind her ear so she can use both hands to seize his, shaking it up and down. "I'm assuming you're Max? I remember meeting you when I was six. And Isla!" She grabs Isla's hands. "I met you when I was seven and seven months, but your family can't visit often because you're the rulers, obviously."
"Um, yeah." Isla pulls her hands away, looking confused.
"But only Fairy Godmother is supposed to issue wands." Max argues.
Eleanor shrugs. "I suppose Mummy didn't know that, or didn't care. Daddy agreed I should have it this year, too, since we moved here for my high-school years and it's new territory that I've never lived in before. Auradon has such different weather! Scotland normally has such chilly weather, and is always wet. Here, I can wear my hair down without constantly charming it!" She starts playing with her hair, fluffing it for emphasis.
"Yeah, but---" Max starts.
The warning bell rings and we all flinch.
Eleanor's eyes go wide. "Oopsie! Can't be late. Bye!" She pulls her wand from behind her ear, and taps herself on the head. She disappears in a flurry of gold-and-blue sparkles.
"Crap, I can't be late on my first day." Isla moans. "I live like, two minutes away, so they'll never take that excuse!"
"I wish I had my mom's poof-y powers." I grumble. "Or that Eleanor had taken us with her. Let's run."
"Agreed." Max says. Still clinging to one another, we sprint down hallways until we all reach History moments before the starting bell rings.
"YEAH!" Isla cheers. "Made it!"
"Sit down!" An annoyed voice chides, and we all look up to see the History professor, Fairy Godmother, giving us a scolding look.
"Sorry." We say in unison, finding seats in the back as Fairy Godmother starts her happy introduction.
"Does she ever change the words?" Max whispers. "We've had her three times now, and I don't hear a difference."
"No, she just used 'and' where she used 'as well' last year. Guys, she's moderning up!" Isla giggles quietly.
We all snicker in the background, listening to Fairy Godmother babble on obliviously.
"Just think---after this hour, we've got it easy." Isla says, propping her feet up on the kid in front of her's chair, wiggling her stylish purple converse around. "P.E. with the Freshmen. And then, after that, we've got Chem 3, Lunch, Free Period, Popular Charms and Spells, Creative Writing," Max perks up, although I don't know why, "and then we're free."
Isla sighs contentedly, closing her eyes and lacing her hands behind her head.
"Wait. What's Charms and Spells?" I ask. "Isn't that just the lesser version of Magic?"
Isla peeks open one eye. "Magic is literal powers. Optional. Charms and Spells is a defensive class against the kinds of hexes that don't always require magical blood. A required class for Senior year, but you can take it Junior. So I did. That'll give us an extra Free Period next year."
"Isla!" A voice suddenly chides, right behind us. We all three flinch, Isla's feet accidentally kicking the kid (who I can now see is Hayder, the son of Jane (Fairy Godmother's daughter) and Omar(The Genie's son)) in his ear.
We all slowly look backward, cringing when we see Fairy Godmother behind us, giving us scalding glares.
"Pay. Attention. In. Class." Fairy Godmother orders, then stalks back to the front of the class.
"Yes, ma'am." we say together, slouching in unison.
As soon as she's not paying attention. Max smiles wickedly. "We ticked off FG on the first day. I'd say this year is off to a great start!"

I can't believe it----this book has only been out for two weeks, and has 100 views! Thanks so much, people who're reading this! :D
Also: Here's another hint to where I've been getting a lot of the names from: "Eleanor"s name was almost "Elina". Anyone got it yet? It's not a big deal I'm just silly and want to know if anyone liked this as much as I did when I was little.
