Prompt: Isla x Nya AU from TheMagicalMang0
Title from the lyrics of: How Lovely by Reinaeiry
I wanted to call it I Feel A Little Tingle In My Chest And At This Point I'm Really Hoping It's A Heart Attack but that seemed too long. 😂
🏳️🌈❤️Happy Pride Month!!!! ❤️🏳️🌈

Isla didn't laugh a lot.
She scoffed, she snickered, but never full-on laughter. It wasn't that she didn't have a sense of humour. Her humour was more dry and sarcastic than anything. She just didn't burst out with bubbles and chortles of joy the way others did.
Nya laughed.
She laughed a lot.
It was a beautiful sound to Isla's ears.
It wasn't exactly dainty. She snorted if something was funny enough but it was beautiful nonetheless. Every time Isla heard it she felt her heart flutter.
Isla was good at self-regulation. Whether it was for school, social interaction, or anything. When it came to Nya it was no different.
Stop. Isla told her brain every time she felt her cheeks heat when Nya talked to her.
Stop. Isla protested when she accidentally brushed the girl's hand.
Stop. Isla hissed when she couldn't stop watching the girl valiantly beat up Chen in P.E.
She's straight. Isla reminded herself. She has a boyfriend.
You can't have her.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Nya was not straight.
Isla was pretty good at masking her surprise but it was a huge struggle not to gape at the girl. Nya smiled like it was nothing and continued walking calmly down the hall.
"Yeah, I'm bi." She had said.
"Oh cool, I'm bi too." Isla had oh-so-intelligently replied.
Not a lot drove Isla crazy.
There were annoying people.
And then there was Nya.
Isla was starting to think Nya was winning at the contest of what made Isla's head spin the most.
Isla was always a calm cool and collected person. She was that girl who sat alone with her nose in her book. The girl whose aura said STAY AWAY! and usually people respond to it.
Except for Nya.
Nya would plop down beside Isla. She'd either stay quiet and do her homework or occasionally engage Isla in conversation. Nya moved like it was a dance, always so smoothly, so fluidly whether she was talking or running. Her pretty dark eyes made all logical thought disappear and her smile caused a tingle in Isla's chest that she couldn't ignore.
You can see why Isla didn't get as much reading done when Nya joined her.
Isla peeked over the top of her novel. The epic battles of the space pirates were long forgotten as she watched Nya tease her friends, a twinkle in her eye as she grinned at him. Isla couldn't help but smile a little with her.
Nya caught her eye and blinked in surprise before she gave a little wave. Isla flushed and just slowly bent lower into her book to avoid all eye contact.
Isla could hear the thud of her heart in her head. The book felt slippery in her fingers as her palms began to sweat and against her better judgement she snuck a glance at the other girl. Jay had taken Nya's hand and was leading her away, a dopey smile on his face.
A sick feeling rolled in her stomach as Isla watched them go.
Crud.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
"Isla! The pretty girl is here!"
Isla's brows furrowed and she looked up from her homework. She couldn't have heard him right.
"Leif? No yelling from the other room, remember?" Isla called, her brain was struggling to catch up as her door was nudged open a little wider.
Isla's breath caught in her throat when Nya strolled in. "Hi," Nya said simply.
Oh, wait- that pretty girl.
"Hey..." Isla let her dark curly hair cover her face as she bent to put her textbook away. She hoped it gave her enough time to erase the internal keyboard smash expression she had on her face. "What's up?"
Nya was unusually quiet. Isla frowned and straightened, she risked a look through her hair. Nya's eyes and nose were red. A sad brown gaze glittered back at Isla, making something inside her sink.
"What's wrong?" Isla whispered.
"Um..." Nya sniffed a little, a hand hurriedly swiped at the small trickle of water that rolled down her face. "So... Jay and I broke up."
Isla's face fell as she watched Nya try and talk through her ragged breaths. "I just needed someone to talk to. Kai didn't really understand. You know... cause he's Kai."
Oh yes, she did know.
Things didn't get more complicated than having a crush on your ex-boyfriend's sister. Cupid was probably laughing at his joke somewhere. Oh how fun it was to make never ending drama worthy of a hallmark movie! Isla was ready to take that little baby's arrow and stick it up his nose.
"I'm sorry." was all Isla could say.
And she was.
Nya was happy with Jay and Isla loved seeing Nya happy.
"It's not your fault." Nya forced a smile.
Isla was never one to believe in wishes and dreams that come true but at that moment she wondered if it had been her fault. She had spent so long wishing she could be with Nya. Could that tiny little dream have done this? Was this the world showing her the consequences of her selfish wishes?
"Isla." Nya pulled her from her thoughts. "I'm okay."
Isla stayed silent, her fingernails digging into her palms. She didn't know what to say. Why did words come so easily to everyone else? The only way Isla could have a truly sincere conversation was when she was acting on a stage.
"It's good." Nya continued, sitting down on her friend's bed.
Isla raised an eyebrow but didn't reply. She waited for Nya to go on.
"The start was always so exciting." Nya smiled as she talked, a faraway look in her eye. "New, sweet, and simple. But as time went on it felt less like lovers and more like friends."
Isla nodded in understanding. It had taken her and Kai some time to brush aside the grudges they held from their own break-up. It hadn't been a friendly one and they were both left hurting. But after they put it all behind them Isla realized how much nicer it was to be friends with Kai. Fewer arguments, less pressure, no more relying on him as a boyfriend, but simply as a friend.
Sometimes it's hard to accept some things aren't meant to happen.
"It still hurts though." Isla settled beside the girl. She kept her fists bunched around the bottom of her shirt to keep from taking Nya's hand.
"It does." Nya echoed softly.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
"So...?"
Isla stopped chewing on her food to glance up at the girl before her. Cecilia was practically bubbling over with excitement.
"What?" Isla mumbled through her meal. Sometimes food was one of the only ways they could get her to stop reading and join them.
"You and Nya!" Cecilia burst out like it was obvious.
Isla raised an eyebrow. "This isn't a romance movie, Cecilia. She isn't going to move onto someone new right after she got out of a relationship. Nya's still sad. She and Jay were together for a long time."
"She might move on for the right person!" Cecilia sang with a knowing look.
Isla shook her head. "Jay and Nya are both my friends. That would be disrespectful. Anyway, Nya doesn't feel the same way."
Cecilia looked like she wanted to say a lot more on the subject but to Isla's relief, she kept it to herself. Though Isla knew it would come back later she appreciated the gesture.
"Fine," Cecilia grumbled. "But one day it will happen."
"One day what will happen?"
Isla shot Cecilia a look that would shrivel flowers as an arm reached over and tried to snag some of her chips. Isla promptly slapped the top of their palm before they could steal any.
"Hey!" Kai complained, recoiling. "Why are you always so violent?"
Isla shrugged, not denying it and began licking each individual chip so he wouldn't want to eat them. Kai huffed and sat down beside her, glancing at Cecilia.
"You didn't answer my question." He prompted her.
Cecilia reddened as Isla pointedly avoided Kai's gaze. "Uh... uh.."
Kai laughed. "I'm just joking..."
Cecilia let out a sigh of relief.
"-I already heard everything you said."
Isla went to kick him but Kai quickly dodged. Kai sent Isla a glare before he shoved his chair over beside Cecilia.
"It's no secret that you like her." Kai snorted.
Isla narrowed her eyes at him. "Who told you?"
"I figured it out by myself!" Kai exclaimed defensively.
Isla stared at him until he relented. "Okay it was Zane- but you're not exactly subtle about it!"
"What do you mean? I'm way more subtle than you are!" Isla retorted.
"Nya is the only person you let in." Kai pointed out. "You never told me half of what you tell Nya when we were dating."
Isla glowered, sinking down behind her food tray. He wasn't wrong which was why she was upset. Of all the times Kai was right why did this have to be the one?
"Does Nya know?" Cecilia asked, Isla's head whipped around to look at Kai as well.
"Oh, I have no idea." Kai shrugged.
"Kai!" Isla hissed.
"What? Zane said it was obvious about your affections and I didn't see them! Why would I pick up anything from Nya?"
Both girls gave him an unimpressed look.
Isla swung her foot at him again. "Because she's your sister?"
"I'm not getting into my sister's love life!" Kai said hastily.
"Since when have you decided to stay out of Nya's business?" Isla scoffed.
"Since now!" Kai shot back.
Cecilia and Isla exchanged looked before they burst into laughter. Kai scowled as the girls keeled themselves over with mirth, snickering as Kai continued to pout.
"You're making me look bad," Kai grumbled.
"Oh honey," Isla sighed, gently placing her hand on his arm. "You do that all on your own."
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
"Are you and Isla..." Nya said awkwardly and she gestured vaguely with her hands.
Kai raised an eyebrow and paused, dropping his katana to his side. "Are we...?" Kai trailed off like she did and waited for her to finish.
Nya flushed, her face turned red as she avoided his gaze. She knew asking him wouldn't be as simple as yes or no. Maybe talking to him while they were sparring wasn't the best idea but the questions had been niggling at the back of her mind all day.
"You know... together again?" Nya forced the words out painfully. Her sai was long forgotten by her side as she waited for a response.
She had seen Kai and Isla snickering together. Her heart has plummeted when Isla had reached out and touched her brother's arm. It wasn't completely unlikely that they wouldn't get back together. They had been off and on dating a lot.
Kai stared at her for a long time.
Well, crud. That had been a terrible idea.
"Never mind!" Nya blurted out and she frantically tried to back-pedal. She wished she could suck the words back into her mouth. "It was just a question-"
"No."
Nya froze. Her gaze flicked back and forth. "No what?"
"No, Isla and I are not together," Kai answered with a snort. He looked at her slowly from the corner of his eye. "Why do you ask?"
A slow sly smile inched across his face.
Nya gave him a look. "Don't-"
"You have a crush on Isla?"
Nya opened her mouth to retort then closed it. It was obvious. Nya could no longer deny the way her heart fluttered around the girl. How Nya couldn't stop thinking about her. Or the way she constantly wanted to be with Isla. It shouldn't be this hard to admit. Yet it was.
Another factor was the awkwardness that came with being hopelessly in love with your brother's ex-girlfriend. Though they were on good terms Nya didn't want to hurt Kai in any way or make things awkward for them.
"Would you be okay with me having a crush on Isla?" Nya inquired carefully. Kai studied her and Nya did her best to avoid his gaze.
"I would," Kai said finally.
Nya's eyebrows shot up. "This isn't one of those times where you say you're okay with it but really you aren't, right?"
Kai chuckled. "No. I can see that you really like her. She's good for you... and you're good for her."
Nya felt her heart warm. "Thank you, Kai." She was so lucky to have someone like him as a brother. He could be a little irrational but he cared for Nya more than she could possibly know.
Nya went to give him a hug, a smile on her face as she wrapped her arms around him. Nya yelped in surprise when suddenly her legs were hooked out from under her and she slammed to the ground. Her eyes were met with a smirk as Kai pointed the tip of his katana down at her.
She scowled as Kai smugly placed his foot on her stomach. "I win."
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Isla was reading on the steps again when Nya approached her. The tiny staircase had been long abandoned in favour of the bigger one. People only ever used it if they really were in a rush. It was dirty and bleak but it was a good place to hideout. Somehow Nya still found her.
"Hey," Nya smiled down at her.
Isla glanced up once then quickly looked back to her page to avoid having a panic attack. "Hi."
"What are you doing over here again? Don't you want to sit with us?" Nya took her spot beside Isla. The other girl shrugged.
Some days she didn't feel like socially interacting with people. It was hard to slide into a conversation and Isla wasn't always comfortable talking with large groups of people.
There was a beat of silence before Nya spoke again. "Kai and Jay would really like it if you joined us." She tempted imploringly.
"They'll live." Isla snorted.
"I would like you to come too." Nya dared to say. Isla paused, becoming even more still than she had been before. She slowly turned to see Nya looking at her sweetly. "I love being with you."
"Oh," Isla said lamely, her voice suddenly was very small.
Nya laughed her perfect little laugh, eyes sparkling the way that they always did. "Yeah. I... I really like you Isla."
She blinked. "Oh."
Nya gave her a half-amused, half-annoyed look. "You're killing me here. It's okay, I just want to know how you feel."
"Uh..." Isla was rarely at a loss for words. She always had a quip or an insult at the tip of her tongue but suddenly her mouth felt like it was filled with cotton and she couldn't talk. "I..."
How did she feel?
She felt like her thoughts had lost all gravity and were floating around chaotically on clouds in her head. She felt like she had drunk fifteen cups of black coffee at once and like she would barf up rainbows if her heart didn't return to normal. She felt like Nya was the most beautiful, amazing person she had ever met. Inside and out. She felt like she could fall asleep to her voice and never lose interest in anything she said. She felt like she'd do anything just to see that smile. That crazy beautiful, gorgeous smile.
Nya's smile faded as Isla fell quiet. A stab of loss hit Isla hard. No! I want to see it again.
"You don't have to like me back," Nya told her hurriedly, her tone reaching for a positivity she couldn't get to. "I don't want to pressure you, I just wanted to tell you."
Nya stood, brushing the dirt off her pants as she went to scramble back up the stairs. Isla had been on pause. Her brain had frozen, her body numb, but as Nya started to run away it was as if someone had pressed play.
"I think I'm in love with you!" Isla blurted out.
They both stopped, eyes wide at her confession. It was an odd thing for Isla to say. She wasn't the sappy type, always practical. She never burst out with sudden revelations on love. Yet she had.
"Oh," Nya said.
Isla felt her lips twitch as she set down her book. She slowly walked up to where Nya was standing.
"I feel like I can't live without you," Isla said softly. "I feel like all the best things in the world all came together when you were brought into my life."
Nya blinked, eyes slightly glistening as she took Isla's hands. There's that smile.
"I feel like I'm in love with you too." Nya let out a breathless laugh. For once, Isla did too.
NOTE******
Confessing love when you're a teenager isn't totally realistic since you're so young but I'm pretty sure that Nya and Isla are in love. 😂😊❤️❤️❤️
I wanted to do something for pride month and Blossom's request seemed like a good way to check two things off my list! I want to do more for pride month but it depends on if I have time and motivation. :)
Thank you for the prompt, Blossom! I really enjoyed writing it!
