〔 002 〕 OAFCU characters' letterboxd top 4
Did you know I love discussing OAFCU (Oil Apply Fic Cinematic Universe)? Yes, yes, of course, you do, because I love my work friends so much, teehee! Anyway, I thought this would be a fun tag for my OAFCU characters to see their tastes if they had their own Letterboxd accounts! I'm unsure whether this is already an established tag here, but if it isn't, it's a new tag now, teehee! You can do this with your characters. Tag me so I can see them! I might do this for my original characters later, so peep out.
Before we start with this, I am ignoring timelines for this, but this is specifically just for Adwin, considering he's from the 1900s, so if you see any modern films for him... Ignore that! And then, for this, I will be going through characters by released date rather than chronological―and I will be including Deterrant and Overboard, even if they are still being updated because I simply can! One more note before I start: I do have Letterboxd patron (hi, follow me; my username is cryptidminds <3), but I changed the covers so that it's easier to recognise them.
So, here we go <3
〔 ARCANE 〕 ―― WESLEY FERNS
001: IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE ― YOU CANNOT TELL ME THAT JAMIE RECOMMENDED THIS FILM FOR HIM AND THEN HE FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. Literally, this is one of the best slow cinemas, and the trope of will they, won't they? love that it is so GOOD. I eat it up every time. I personally think that Wesley, at first, didn't think that he would enjoy this because it's a romance film, whereas I think Wesley is more of a fast―paced film type, or at least more catered towards action―packed films (as it is with the rest of the list), but I just know Wesley sobbed afterwards.
002: FIGHT CLUB ― Oh please, this is literally Wesley―coded: the homoeroticism, the anger, the fighting, everything about this screams Wesley. This would probably be a classic for him, and he can constantly rewatch. I also think that, in a way, this film changed Wesley's outlook on his masculinity and made him more understanding regardless of everything. If it weren't for Jamie, Fight Club would be #1 for SURE.
003: ALIENS ― For some reason, I can see Wesley being a science fiction lover, but specifically those that overlap with thriller or horror, such as Aliens. Now, essential to note is that this is the 1979 version of Aliens. Another thing to note is that this specific selection was tough because I was between two films that I felt Wesley could have enjoyed, either this one or Jurassic Park, so take that as you will in favourites for him.
004: DONNIE DARKO ― You're going to tell me this isn't a Wesley―coded film? EXACTLY. I mean, literally, the overall aesthetic and the angst―coded vibes within this, plus the idea that it's a troubled teenager narrowly escaping a bizarre accident... Dare I say... Arcane events and Wesley? Once again! Wesley―coded. Wesley would watch this film so much and just whisper under his breath, "he's literally me." (You know... Without the crime stuff.)
〔 UPRISE 〕 ―― REAGAN CALLOWAY
001: DEAD POETS SOCIETY ― Reagan's #1 favourite of all time, and he sobs to it every time. There's something about this film that brings comfort to Reagan, even when he knows he's going to sob at the end of it EVERY TIME. A bonus fact is that he watched it with Wren at one point, and Wren had to pause the film because Reagan was just full of snot and tried to convince him that he was okay... Yeah... Reagan's favourite would have been Neil Perry, and he has the script of the stage version and has anything tied to the film; it's THAT big for him.
002: BEAUTIFUL BOY ― I think, when choosing Reagan's films, I knew that I wanted to get films that had beautiful proses in it, and the narrative leading being emotional, or had at least some sort of poetic themes behind it, so Beautiful Boy had to be on here. There's something about this film that tugs at Reagan's heartstrings, and I feel that he would understand it?? Like, not along the lines of connection, but rather that he understands the poem underneath the story.
003: PAST LIVES ― A beautiful film that talks about the idea of confronting the notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make life up, as well as the idea that perhaps, there is something in past lives that connects people together, rather than this lifetime, knowing that they love each other so much, but they cannot due to circumstances... Yeah. Need I say more? Literally, all I need to say is Reagan and Wren and the Uprise ending. Yeah.
004: LA LA LAND ― Reagan's celebrity crush is Ryan Gosling; I'm taking this as canon. Anyways, yeah, La La Land had to be on his list, because I think Reagan would be able to appreciate the film for its beautiful prose and cinematography. Plus... Of course, he cried at this; he's just an emotional guy, okay! Like, that theatre scene... Yeah. Reagan gets it.
〔 PLIGHT 〕 ―― ADWIN SCHMIT
001: THE BANSHEES OF INISHRIN ― I knew when making this that I wanted this film to be on Adwin's list because I feel like he would appreciate the beauty and the complexity of this film―especially when it comes to digesting the meaning behind this. PLUS this film is also in my own personal top four, so of course Adwin have to have this film on his top four <3 Also, I feel like he would.. share similarities?? Being as vague as I can, but this film somehow reminds me of Plight in a way.
002: GOOD WILL HUNTING ― Dare I say, Adwin vibes? He definitely SOBBED during this, probably because there were some words during this that hit hard and close to home―but also sharing some sort of connection towards this film because this sort of relationship happened during Plight and god, it would have just been Heartbreak City when Adwin watches this.
003: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE ― YOU CAN'T TELL ME ADWIN'S NOT SOBBING AT THIS?? Yeah, he's a Pride and Prejudice girlie, and I stand by this. Flo probably would have watched this with him as well, and he's got a hardcover book of this on his bedside table too. RIP Adwin, you would have loved Pride and Prejudice (2005) </3 You know he would have LOVED Darcy.
004: PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE ― This is a film I think Adwin introduced to Flo and in the end, both ended up sobbing together <3 There is a common theme throughout this list, of course, with the majority being historical―like or at least period pieces, but also I feel like Adwin wouldn't be into any war films (sorry Mickey </3), but rather into beautiful prose―like pieces, such as Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
〔 GENTRY 〕 ―― ROMAN WELSHLY
001: ALL OF US STRANGERS ― This is such a moving, emotional queer film about trying to move on when something happens, and it tackles grief, loss and loneliness while also telling a queer love story. Essentially, all the people in the film are longing for something ― to be understood, to be known, and that fits Roman perfectly. Throughout Gentry, Roman is trying to find their place amongst the group while also tackling the idea of morality to the point where they have lost hope and god; it's just so them.
002: ANATOMY OF A FALL ― Like Leo, I feel that there had to be at least one crime film on here, and so I decided to go with Anatomy of a Fall because this film does expand on the idea of guilt, and almost deciding who is really at the fault of the crime here ― something that even the book is about, and Roman as a character overall. Plus, the tension and the drama of this film, and the idea that this is a 'thinking prose' sort of film, is absolutely right up Roman's alley.
003: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY ― Oh, 100%, this is a Roman film. There's something about this that feels like it's something that they would watch. It's a long Western film that is deemed one of the best in cinematic history, but it also has one of the best scores among films. Expanding on it being a Western historical film, I feel that Romans would love that sort of thing because they would be able to appreciate the art of it. Plus, it's a film that when you think of Roman, you would think of something along the lines of this.
004: THE GODFATHER ― Someone had to have The Godfather on their list... Of course, it had to be Roman. C'mon, you literally cannot tell me otherwise that Roman would be someone who enjoys that film. I think, honestly, out of everyone here, Roman's film interests border the 'film bro' stereotype, but that's probably because they would enjoy 'thinking' films if that makes sense??
〔 DEFEATISM 〕 ―― MAVERICK SANTIAGO
001: THE NOTEBOOK ― Do I even need to explain this? Maverick is the #1 The Notebook defender despite me not liking the film LMAO, but it just makes sense because Maverick's a romantic at heart, and he's in touch with his emotions as well, that it sort of makes sense that The Notebook is in his top four.
002: SINGLE ALL THE WAY ― You know there had to be at least one Hallmark film on his top four, and this is one of his favourites, in my opinion. It's such a bad Hallmark film in the best way possible, it's a queer rom―com, and it has Jennifer Coolidge in it; Maverick's going to eat that shit UP. It has a love triangle and cringe―worthy dialogue that makes you want to rip your hair out and turn it off, yet... There's something about this film that Maverick enjoys so much like it's cringe but enjoyable for him.
003: THE LEGO MOVIE ― C'mon... It's Maverick we're talking about here... He loves The Lego Movie, or any animation film to be fair, but this film just screams Maverick so much. In terms of characters, his favourite is probably Emmett (or, fun fact, it was either between The Lego Movie or Lego Batman... Maybe Maverick's a Lego guy), because Emmett has a vibe that I feel like Maverick radiates, just being a good guy and stupid (I say this with affection <3).
004: BEFORE SUNRISE (THE TRILOGY) ― Maverick loves love!!! Of course, the Before Sunrise trilogy had to be there (I know, I'm cheating slightly when I'm including the trilogy, but I just couldn't cope with just one film there). But if you're looking for a good romance film that has Ethan Hawke in it, then this is the one <3 It kind of reminds me of specifically the relationship between Maverick and Moonie, and how precious it is, that even during the time locked in together, they loved each other as though it was the last time they were together―kinda like this film.
〔 PERVERSE 〕 ―― LEO SANG―WOOK
001: FALLEN ANGELS ― Actually, to be fair, anything from Wong Kar―wai would be NO #1 for Leo, primarily because the overall aesthetics that he gives to his world of films is so beautiful. If I had not put In the Mood for Love for Wesley, it would be on here. I also think that this sort of film is something that Leo would put on in the background while he's doing something; plus, I see him as someone who likes watching the crime/thriller genre, despite being an RCMP himself.
002: EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE ― This film suggests that what makes life meaningful is the recognition that because there is no inherent meaning, all things and moments are equally meaningful... Hi! This is so Leo! Just the idea that second chances and going to make it meaningful until the end matches with the things that Leo had done, and so when watching this film, Leo probably would have been so connected to this. (And probably sobbed). Also, I will take it as canon that he watches his films with Nico, and so they are watching this... Leo's heart </3
003: ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND ― There is love, and it's tender within this film, and on top of the anger and the forgiveness, but also the destruction within someone reminds Leo too much of himself. This is more specifically targeted towards the idea that Leo thinks he doesn't deserve nice things, but then he is reminded, after watching this film, that this isn't true and that he is loved. I imagine this is a film where if Leo wanted to feel something, he probably would watch this.
004: THE FAREWELL ― Leo would have sobbed throughout this film, purely because this film would have hit him too close to home. There's a specific metaphor around this as well, with a bird, and it's meant to be a symbol of Billi's burden, or shame, or the lies she's carried, and finally being released through the means of her grandma―and in a way, would have tugged at Leo, sharing a connection with Billi. I think this film, overall, would be a special film just in terms of personal connection for Leo, and he treasures it.
〔 DETERRENT 〕 ―― HARVEY EVRIN
001: OLDBOY ― Looking at the summary of this: With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years, a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors. Dare I say that it is Harvey―coded?? Just the general vibe and aesthetics of Oldboy, it's so, so, SO Harvey, and the whole idea of vengeance, and Harvey's character wanting that feeling to be fulfilled so badly, like oh my god, that's a Harvey film, and he sees himself too much in Oh Dae―su because of that. It's a 10/10 film; Harvey would watch it just to feel something.
002: PSYCHO ― I didn't want to give Harvey a straight―up horror film, because I felt that it wasn't really his vibe. However, it did get me thinking about subtle stuff, such as Stephen King ( by the way, I am a strong believer in him enjoying the books) and Hitchcock films, which I feel fit Harvey so much more than expected, especially with a film such as Psycho. He would have a strong opinion about this film and would debate with anyone who says the TV series was better (Bates Motel in reference).
003: ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST ― Harvey will claim that this is a heart―felt film, despite it having one of the saddest endings out of all of this... Genuinely, Harvey will watch this during a movie date (with Titus teehee), claiming that it's sweet and then be shocked when Titus is like teary―eyed. Jokes aside, I feel that Harvey loves the idea of the found―family within a strange place, and knowing that perhaps, in the end, he is just like the people around him, sort of thing.
004: CLUE ― Listen... I just think that Harvey is secretly a big fan of murder mysteries stuff (so honestly, Orient of the Express would have been such a good option, too. However, this fit better in terms of Harvey, trust me. Genuinely, when watching this film, I feel that Harvey would be so obsessed with this, to the point that maybe someone found an old box of games and it had Clue, and Harvey convinced everyone to play this with him (he keeps going until he wins at least one game, I imagine he's not that great at it...)
〔 OVERBOARD 〕 ―― FINLEY MURPHY
001: NAPOLEON DYNAMITE ― Look at Finley; of course, he would LOVE this film. There's something about the goofiness of Napoleon Dynamite, and it just absolutely fits Finn's personality and vibes. This definitely would have been a classic for him, to the point where he had rewatched it possibly too much, and he would claim it as a 'cult classic', and force people to watch it when he picks it for movie nights. I can also imagine that he quotes from it just out of the blue and then moves on. God, Finley, and this film make sense when you pair them together.
002: BACK TO THE FUTURE ― Making it canon that one Halloween night on the boat, he went as Marty Mcfly and has memorised the lines. He had the film poster growing up in his bedroom, and not only was Napoleon Dynamite a repeat for him but so was Back to the Future, which I think also was a classic for him. It was really hard as well to decide which film would go here because I feel like The Breakfast Club was also a good choice here ― so it could be along the lines of any 80s film in this slot.
003: BARBIE ― Finley is LITERALLY Ken <3 Like, I cannot elaborate on this more than that, LMAO, but yeah, he loves this film because not only is it whimsical and fun, but it's so sweet, and Finley loves watching this. Oh yeah, and you know he had MEMORISED 'I'm just Ken' and would drop a hat to perform this for the boat one drunk night for sure.
004: JUMANJI ― Once again, it was really hard to decide what goes here. It was either Jumanji or Night at the Museum, but I decided that he would have loved the idea of board games and the child―like wonder he had possibly grown up with this film in his childhood. Plus, I honestly think... Finley would have thought this was real and tried to find the Jumanji board game so that he could play it...
AND FINALLY, HERE WE GO! Oh my god, I had so much fun doing this. It was so interesting to see such a wide range of films and characters, and I hope that you guys enjoyed this as much as I did! There were so many options that I wanted to include. You have no idea omg, but yeah! My OAFCU characters top four <3
