Chapter 5
Nadia Novak and Ivy Finch were working in the shop, as always. They had to check up and fix the planes that this specific detachment were using.
They were sure putting a beating on those planes, but Nadia had the feeling it was more Maverick's teaching than their flying.
(He was certainly giving all of them a run for their money, according to Lex.)
"So," Nadia started as she and Ivy began to run diagnostics on the last plane. "Are you ready to meet the team? I know you've been chomping at the bits since they arrived."
Ivy could only nod. "I need to know who has the backs of Lex and Reu. From what you and Lex have told me, there are one or two people I'm gonna have to straighten out."
She was mainly talking about Hangman, but Nadia wasn't so sure she could do that. Hangman was Hangman. She didn't know if he listened to anyone other than himself and his ego. (It sure seemed to be the only thing that drove him.)
"They are all pretty okay, other than Hangman. All fantastic in the air, so I have no doubt our boys are in good hands."
Ivy smirked as she looked over to her best friend. "From what I hear, you have your eye on one aviator in particular."
Nadia's mouth dropped slightly before she caught it. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
A laugh escaped Ivy as she nudged Nadia lightly. "So I haven't been told about some looks between you and my brother's backseater?"
Nadia dropped her clipboard.
"Well, that's all the answer I need to know." Ivy picked it up and handed it back.
Nadia was rapidly shaking her head. "No. There are no looks going on between anyone. Nope."
Ivy only looked at her over her own clipboard.
She sighed. "Fine, so there may be some looks. But don't go making a big deal out of it. I'm not sure what's going on right now."
Ivy held up her hands, showing surrender. "Okay, I'll stay out of it." But she pointed her finger at the other woman. "For now."
The diagnostics had finally finished, showing no fixed needed, so the two were done for the day.
Nadia out the rest of her equipment back before turning to Ivy. "Come on. They should be done just about now. Let's go introduce you to everyone."

Lex had texted the girls to meet him and the team at The Hard Deck. The team had wanted to unwind after what could only be described as hell in training.
The two women walked into the bar, Nadia spotting the group immediately. She grabbed Ivy's arm, directing her over until Lex spotted them.
"Finally," he shouted. "You made it!"
Everyone greeted Nadia warmly, but a few people were curious as to who the other one was.
They got at least one answer to that question when Lex walked right up to Ivy and pulled her into a kiss. Coyote let out a wolf whistle as Payback went to pull them apart.
"Alright, alright," he said as Ivy looked at him apologetically. "I really don't need to see you shoving your tongue down my sister's throat, Marin."
Hangman choked on his beer. "She's your sister?!"
Ivy raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "What about it?"
He could only raise his hands in surrender. "Just wasn't aware he had one, that's all."
While this was happening, Nadia had made her way over to the dart board, taking turns with Bob and Mickey.
She was losing. Terribly.
Mickey was laughing. "Your job literally requires precision. How are you so bad at darts?"
Nadia, never one to back down, just looks at him over her shoulder. "Maybe I'm trying to be bad to make you think you're doing good."
They both knew that wasn't the case, but Mickey played into it. "Okay, show me how it's done then." He gestured to the board, backing up and crossing his arms over his chest.
Nadia took her aim, took a breath, and threw. She just barely made the board.
"Okay, so maybe I'm bad at darts."
Mickey laughed. "You don't say." He walked closer to her. "Let me show you what you're doing wrong."
He positioned his body to show her the proper stance, as he took aim. He threw and hit the bullseye.
Nadia took her stance, checking to see if she was right. Mickey came closer, checking with her before touching her. When she nodded, he adjusted her footing before lightly grabbing her waist to twist her just a little bit extra. As she lifted her arm, he tilted her elbow just a bit higher.
"Try now."
She threw the dart. And while she didn't hit the bullseye, she got the ring just outside it. "Yes!"
Nadia threw her arms into the air, her and Mickey high fiving in excitement.
This continued on for a few more rounds, but they didn't notice their little audience. Lex, Ivy, and Reuben had all noticed their interactions, glancing at each other before the Finch siblings smirked to each other.
"No," Lex began. "Not a chance. Nothing is happening until I get the chance to talk with him. Nope."
Ivy shook her head. Lex was entering over protective brother mode. But she got him to loosen up when a song came on that she wanted to dance to.
Nadia had finished up her darts, heading to the bar for a drink, when Reuben cornered her.
The man, despite Lex's warning, couldn't help himself. “As my defacto little sister, you should listen to me when I tell you to go for him.”
Nadia had had her drink for two seconds, but she choked on it anyway. "What?"
He raised an eyebrow. "You think we didn't see that little display you two were putting on? There is definitely something there."
"Psh, no, there's not. He was just showing me proper dart throwing."
Reuben would let her live in denial for a little longer. "Okay, if that's what you say."
She nodded, taking a sip of her drink. He could only shake his head slightly.
"Just don't wait too long. I have a feeling you two would be good together."
