I've always thought about love. It's been present in my life since I was born, and I've been aware of all the forms it can take in the relationships that exist between people. At first, like everyone, I felt love for my mother, as clear as the crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea. It was inherent to me, something I felt every time we hugged or looked at each other. In my chest, I carried the purest and truest love, existing since the beginning of time, common to all human beings.

Not long after, I encountered the love that comes with friendship, sweet and warm like a freshly baked buttered roll. With friends around me, I always had the sense that I could never be alone, that I had a safe harbor to turn to whenever I felt a hint of loneliness. I was young, and with the excitement of that age, where you believe you're invincible and immortal, I thought that love was timeless and immortal.

Around the same time, I discovered that it's also possible to feel love for inanimate things, those that can bring you emotions even more intense than certain human beings. I fell in love with books and the stories locked inside them, inevitably and surely, experiencing a kind of happiness and freedom I didn't know existed.

And, of course, there was also the first teenage love, the one we always believe will last forever. Our other half, soulmate, the missing piece, convinced that together we could overcome anything that came our way. When you're a teenager, you're full of energy, which neither gets created nor destroyed, so I had no choice but to channel it into a thousand wonderful things, including love.

Oh, but I could never have imagined that love, just like a summer storm, can break through you and then leave you feeling as empty as a nutshell. No one ever told me that life could hit you so hard it knocks the wind out of your empty body, so I had to learn through a series of blows, one after the other.

My mother, my friends, my first love, the books... They all disappointed me in one way or another, vanishing from my life and introducing me to a new emotion, as intense as it was devastating: heartbreak. That's why I soon stopped believing in everything I'd been so convinced of up until then. Through these painful lessons, I discovered that love is nothing more than a pale shadow, created to deceive us, to play with our hopes and dreams.

Love doesn't exist and never did. It's little more than a farce, made to fool the naive and gullible.

Oh, but in life, you should never believe you know everything. Just when you're convinced you've finally figured out how the world around you works, reality slaps you in the face again, making you rethink everything all over. And that's exactly what I'm here to talk about: the latest blow life has dealt me.
