Chapter 35
backpfeifengesicht
(n.) a person who needs to be slapped
A knock on the door made you whip your head in that direction and wonder who could that be. You sat the bag your were holding on the floor and started jogging to the door. It was probably Snotlout , here to make fun of you on his way somewhere. Maybe it was Astrid who came to tell you what happened after you left. Or it could be the twins or Fishlegs asking for something.
But when you opened the door, you didn't expect a certain someone standing there. It was Hiccup who quite frankly didn't look so bad like you'd expect after having his feelings exposed. Either he can pretend like a pro or things with Astrid went well, but he was definitely composed.
"Hey. Can we talk?" Hiccup said and you offered him a smile.
"Sure. Come on in." You replied, trying to hide your eagerness.
You closed the door after Hiccup entered and when you turned around, you found Hiccup looking at your room that was cluttered with random objects everywhere. You thought he was going to ask why this place looked like a total dumpster, but he began the conversation with something completely else, which was far more interesting.
"You know, that was a really lame move." Hiccup said. "Telling Astrid I like her."
At that, you arched an eyebrow."What? Isn't it true?"
"It is but-"
"But what? I just did you a favour."
"No you don't und-" Hiccup began but then stopped mid sentence. "Just forget about it."
You shrugged and resumed placed a the notebooks in the bag. "So what did Astrid say anyway?"
"She rejected me."
Your lips started twitching into a smile but you quickly suppressed it before Hiccup could notice. Thankfully he was facing the ground instead of you and when he finally looked up, you had mustered the perfect sympathetic expression.
"Oh... Wow that's sad." Your voice was laced with deep compassion as if you really felt sad for him. When in reality you were absolutely delighted how things turned out. For a moment you were certain things might backfire and the two of them will end up being together, but you were thankful nothing like that happened. "Try your luck with Ruff next time."
To that, both of you shared a laugh. Before the amnesia, Hiccup would find even your dumbest jokes amusing, but you rarely made him laugh these days. Often times the most you'd get was a grin and even that wasn't so easily achievable. So hearing his laughter was like music to your ears.
"She's too crazy for me." Hiccup shook his head, a faint smile still visible on his lips.
"And who's right for you?" You asked, leaning a little bit closer. This was the perfect chance for him to seize it and say it was you. You internally begged him to say it, but instead you got a sheepish shrug in response. It was disappointing, but you still smiled.
"Too bad I'm out of the option." You whispered to yourself and moved away from his personal space.
"What was that?" Hiccup asked inquiringly and you just waved him off saying it was nothing. You spun around and continued packing your things. You felt Hiccup's eyes trail after as you went from one corner to the other. You would sneak glances in his direction ever so often and he'd instantly look away.
"Are you going somewhere?" Hiccup questioned.
"Yeah, back to my island. Gotta move some stuff there." You responded. Everything was finished and placed in the bags. Now all its left is to transfer them. You piled all the bags in one spot and dusted your hands with a satisfied smile. Now that all the unneeded things are set aside, your hut looked a lot cleaner.
"Are you leaving the Edge?" Hiccup asked, surprise hidden in his voice.
Though you weren't quite sure whether it was because he was happy or something else. You smirked and decided to see how he would react. "Yes. Sad?"
Silence. Hiccup remained quiet because he was contemplating what to even say. He didn't want you to get the wrong idea that he'd be devastated and heartbroken if you moved, but at the same time he didn't want to leave your question unanswered since it would be quite rude. Just as he pried open his lips to reply, you laughed bitterly.
"I'm joking Hiccup. Its good to see how much you would care if I really left." You finished with a sigh. That's how little much you meant to him. Its unbelievable how much of a different person he is now.
"I didn't mean to-" Hiccup tried to explain himself, but you stopped him. You've heard enough already.
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Do you need anything else?" You said and walked next to the door, clearly showing him to leave if he didn't plan on talking about anything important.
"Um, I found some weird inventions yesterday and I wanted to ask if you know what they are." Hiccup replied with pursed lips. He didn't know why he even asked that, it wasn't like he particularly interested in them and he was aware that he would only be taking time of your day. But he didn't want to leave you feeling resentful towards him.
You already knew most of Hiccup's inventions which is why you agreed to help. Either that or he'll have to figure them out together with someone else and that might end disastrous.
You gave a nod in response and both of you exited the hut and headed to Hiccup's. It was a pleasant weather outside, the moonlight was beaming from the sky, lighting up the path. Every couple seconds, in the distance echoed the owl's melodic hoot and it was soothing to the soul. You enjoyed the quick stroll, the air wasn't frigid nor warm it was just perfect.
"So I told you about everything I made?" Hiccup piped up and you smiled.
"Pretty much, yeah."
There was a pause and you glanced over to Hiccup. The light illuminated his beautiful features and you couldn't help but keep your gaze on him a little longer.
"I usually never tell anyone." Hiccup finally confessed and you quirked an eyebrow. Of course, you were always the first person Hiccup would go to whenever he finished his invention, but afterwards he would show it to the gang as well. Even though they weren't that much interested, they still listened and gave encouraging comments on whatever he made. Except Fishlegs, he was almost excited as Hiccup and the two of them always geeked out together. You simply assumed that on Berk Hiccup was a lot more private about his inventions.
"Well I guess you made an exception for me." You joked, knowing well that it wasn't going anywhere and you earned a lopsided smile from Hiccup.
After arriving there you saw the diaries still remained untouched on Hiccup's bed. You were so tempted to snatch one but then you broke your gaze from then when Hiccup spoke up. He must've seen you watching them.
"Yeah, I didn't have time to put those away." Hiccup said apologetically as if you were going to judge his messy room. But on the contrary, his hut now was the most cleanest it has ever been before. Usually before the floor was covered with crumbled pieces of paper, dismissed ideas that will eventually end up in the trash. And there was always a be a pile of clothes in some corner. The desk was untidy to the utmost extent, pencils and books and brushes all thrown in random places that you would have no idea where to even start looking from if you needed to find anything. But you knew even if it seemed messy in your eyes, Hiccup knew where his possessions were like the back of his hand.
You heard the sound of metal clinking while Hiccup was searching through the wooden chest. Until eventually he pulled out a very familiar shield. He looked at you expectantly, waiting for you to start explaining.
"Really, you don't remember your iconic shield?" You asked, a breath of disbelief escaping your lips. In response Hiccup just shook his head. From the way he was looking at it, it was obvious he had no idea how to use the shield.
"Well, you made it yourself. Like from scratch. The design was all your idea." You motioned him to give you the shield and Hiccup hand it over straight away. "But you didn't just make it for defence, you can attack with the shield as well."
"In the center there's retractable hook and cable and they can be fired off like a grappling line. So you can hook on to something in the distance." You clicked a button and the the center hub shot out of its place. After it entangled the empty air, the room echoed with the string returning back to its place. And it quickly shut back with a loud clink. "And you've got it."
"The disadvantage is that if you hook on to something bigger, lets say for a tree for example, then you'd be dragged to the tree instead of the other way around. So keep that in mind." You never knew why Hiccup was always excited about his inventions, but now when you were the one presenting, you understood why he had so much fun. You noticed the amazed face Hiccup had, almost as if he has just received the best Snoggletog gift ever.
"Also you can put a bola in the center and throw it out, that's interesting. You can knock out someone with that. And it can even be used as a crossbow-" You were stopped when Hiccup gasped.
"Wait, crossbow?" He uttered incredulously.
"Yes. Look." You manoeuvred the shield that way the iron parts rearanged and then connected together forming a crossbow. If you were outside you would've showed him how it's used to fire an arrow, but you knew Hiccup would want anything destroyed in his room.
"Whoa... I made this?" Hiccup asked with a beaming smile and you returned one. You handed him the shield back and he tried out everything you explained. It took you a lot of time to learn the tricks and you were marveled how fast Hiccup got the hang of it, literally did everything right on the first try. It could be because he subconsciously still knew how to use the shield but needed to be reminded.
You spent the next half an hour there explaining everything you found in the chest. Naturally, there were a few inventions you weren't aware that even existed so you had to clue what to tell him. There were other devices you knew about because Hiccup had showed them to you, but you were too invested into him to actually listen while he was telling about them.
The Dragon Blade was the thing Hiccup was most interested in. He was amazed how it was able to light up on command and his eyes sparked with fascination as he watched you wave the blade from one side to the other. He looked exactly like the dragons when they see it for the first time and it was hilarious.
"Here you try it." You grinned and held out your hand. When you thought Hiccup grasped the inferno properly so you loosened the grip and let go. But just then you felt it starting to slip from both Hiccup and your hand. Your eyes shot open in panic, if the inferno fell on the ground then the whole hut will burn down in a minute since the blade was still very much on fire. With quick and awkward moves you managed to grab it before it hit the floor. You closed your eyes and inhaled sharply.
"Let's pretend that I wasn't just about to set my whole hut on fire." Hiccup said with an uneasy laughter, his eyes still a bit wide because of the close encounter. You just gave him a glare and handed him the Dragon blade with a lot more caution and carefulness than the last time.
And you didn't let go until it was safely tucked in Hiccup's hand.
He started slowly swaying it around, testing how he can move it. And then Hiccup brought the inferno closer to his face, examining all the quirks( CHECK).
"What's this button for?" Hiccup questioned and you followed his gaze to where his finger was lingering. A horrified gasp left your lips the moment you realized which button that was.
"No no no, don't press that!" You launched forward and before Hiccup could make any move, you clutched his hand away. In the midst, Hiccup was repeatedly shouting 'okay' with a panicked tone, he wasn't sure what was even happening.
"It will release Zippleback( CHECK) gas and the place will be up in flames before you know it." You explained quickly and Hiccup's eyebrows rose in surprise. He now looked at the Dragon Blade very unsurely. It was obviously a bad idea to use it here in the first place, it was a major fire hazard and you already had enough slip ups to know that the third time you might not be so quick to stop it.
You grabbed the inferno and shut it off. "Um, how about we try this out another time. And outside."
"Good idea." Hiccup replied and both of you laughed uneasily.
After that you went through everything else in the chest until it was completely empty. All of the things were scattered wherever there was free space, on the desk, on the chair, on the floor. Everywhere. You had a lot of fun with Hiccup even if it was talking about his inventions, you were simply enjoying your time with him. At the moment you were both laughing at a funny story you were telling about Chicken. It happened a few months ago when Tuffnut went to Berk and left Chicken in your hands. He explained what to feed her, what she likes and basically how to take care of her. You all took turns in watching an eye on the chicken and everything was okay until lunch. When you were all in the clubhouse ready to eat, you noticed the lack of hawking.
There was back and forth of 'I don't have Chicken. I thought you had her' and afterwards slowly followed the sinking realization that nobody had Chicken and nobody knew where she was. Ruffnut immediately began panicking saying that all of you are doomed when Tuffnut returns. But when everyone thought rationally and retraced their steps it turned out that Astrid was the last one to have Chicken and when Snotlout saw that the chicken was not in her place, he assumed that someone else already took her.
After that was sorted out, all of you started searching for Chicken like she was the most treasured thing in existence. You searched every inch of the island, leaving no stone unturned but in the end Chicken was nowhere to be seen. Nightfall came and none of you managed to even spot a feather. By that point you were desperate and resorted to paining other chickens to look like Tuff's. But none of them seemed to look even remotely similar like Chicken and nobody couldn't pinpoint the difference.
When Tuffnut arrived, everyone was anxiously waiting for him in front of the stables. The atmosphere was tense and Tuffnut noticed it. You were ready to come clean, confess that Chicken was lost in the wilderness, but then as by some miracle, Chicken's hawk came from the side. Everyone's head whipped to the floor and saw Chicken, alive and with all feathers intact. She bobbed to Tuffnut and he picked her off the floor, cradling her in his arms.
When Tuffnut asked what you were going to tell him, everyone looked at each other and you all silently agreed not to tell him. Nobody knew where Chicken was all day, but you were all glad she showed up in the last minute.
"And to this day he still doesn't know. So don't tell him." You chuckled, remembering how relieved you were to see a chicken.
"Well I better head out now." You sighed and got up from the chair. You didn't care enough to look at Hiccup and see whether he would be disappointed and would ask you you to stay. You heard his footsteps follow as the two of you descended down the stairs. After walking out of the door, you turned to Hiccup who had his lips pursed while the two of you stood outside.
"Do you need anything else?" You asked and Hiccup shook his head.
"No, but thanks for everything." Hiccup replied frankly, a slight smile gracing his features. You returned one and waved goodbye. You spun around and left as quick as you got there. Goodbyes were always awkward. You didn't realize how fast you were walking until you were literally standing in front of your hut.
Just as you were about to get in, you heard Astrid call your name. You saw her waving and then beckoning you to come over. Since you didn't have anything else to do, you might as well go there to pass some time.
"Hey, what's up?" You grinned after reaching her. But the look on Astrid's face was anything but friendly.
"Don't you 'what's up' me, you literally just dropped a bomb and left me to struggle there!" Astrid hissed and pulled you inside. She looked left and right outside the hut before slamming the door.
"Well what was I supposed to do? Sit there and watch Hiccup confess his undying love for you?" You let out a brittle laugh. "Thanks but I'd rather not go through that again."
"No, but it was awkward." Astrid sighed, plopping down to a nearby chair while you just leaned on the desk and waited for her to start talking what happened when you left. You were almost excited to find out whether Hiccup talked about you or not.
"So we went over that, 'do you really like me', 'yes', thing and I told him I was flattered but I don't see him that way. And plus I'll never take my friend's man." Astrid laughed and so did you. An unexplainable feeling of relief washed over you and all doubt was cleared away instantly. You were almost angry at yourself for thinking that Astrid would've said anything else.
"And then he said 'Its fine, I don't even want you to. I only like you as a friend anyway'." All the while Astrid was speaking, her eyebrows were creased together forming a bewildered look. She shook her head in disbelief and so did you.
"Wait, what?" You breathed out, sill processing what she just told you. What on earth was Hiccup even talking about? Was this some sort of coping mechanism? After racking your brain, trying to figure out what was going through Hiccup's mind when he said that, you could only assume he said that out of pure embarrassment.
"I know right? I asked him what he means and he just left." Astrid added.
"Strange..." You murmured, deep in thoughts. With a sigh, you concluded it was pointless to overthink this since it will lead to nothing but more questions that you didn't have answers to.
-----
Hiccup closed the last journal and set it atop of the others. He had finished reading all of his entries in the past years and he felt like a completely different person. Just yesterday when he found the books it felt like he was reading the diary of someone else, but after remembering you, every story matched with the ones he could recall. Of course there were some events he couldn't remember even if his life depended on it, but Hiccup was positive that one day he will. The only downside of getting back his memories is that there's no emotion tied to things, no binding, no sense of belonging.
It was a bummer, though there were some rare occasions where Hiccup would feel warm and content all of the sudden after reading something so expressive. He wasn't sure whether it was because of how perfectly descriptive his writing was or something else, but Hiccup simply blamed it on the weather.
But from what he could tell, past Hiccup, as he liked to refer it, was undeniably, madly in love with you. A lot of times Hicup would see parts where he has written how happy he was for meeting you and how grateful he was that you were his girlfriend. But reading that, Hiccup found it very amusing, how he saw you as a literal goddess.
And seeing how you adored him with all your heart, Hiccup felt almost guilty for treating you the way he did. But he was just too confused about everything.
Hiccup didn't know why he was attracted to Astrid in the first place.
After all, she was part of the gang that bullied him to the point where he felt too pathetic even being in their presence. All he knew from Astrid was harsh punches, ones which she might've thought were playful but they still stung like a rock. Laughter that felt like she was laughing at him rather than with him. Maybe it was her divine beauty and strong personality that was so alluring it made him look past all the horrible things she did to him. But Astrid was just there. You, on the other hand, were a whole other story.
Ever since Hiccup woke up from his coma, you were always so caring and loving that at the beginning Hiccup found very overwhelming. He was never used to people giving him that much attention, let alone all of it coming from one girl. But after he saw how mad you were when the two of you entered the cave and how cold you could be, Hiccup wasn't sure if he wanted to get on your bad side.
In reality, Hiccup never really loved Astrid like he told you. He knew she was a complete opposite of him and things will never work out between them. Hiccup's intentions were never to make you jealous, the only reason he pretended to be interested in her so that you could stop liking him.
Deep regret was growing inside of his chest now that he realized Astrid will most likely tell you everything he told her. And you'll end up knocking on his door. But he definitely didn't need that now, all he needed was some fresh air to clear his head. And he was certain Toothless would love to go on a flight.
-----
You laid in your bed, arms placed underneath your head as you stared at the wooden ceiling. You let your thoughts wander off and with that you grew increasingly impatient. Before all you could think was why Hiccup chose Astrid over you and now you all you wondered was why he lied about that.
You were determined to get to the bottom of this. You got off with a huff and then rushed to Hiccup's hut. There weren't any lights emitting from there so you figured the fireplace already burned out. The silence was filled by crickets and light rustling from the small animals crawling in the night.
You rose your hand and knocked three times on the wooden door. It was loud enough for anyone inside to hear, yet there was no answer. You waited for a couple of seconds before knocking a little bit louder this time. Still no reply.
The door creaked loudly as you pushed it open and peered inside, you felt like an intruder stepping in Hiccup's hut when he wasn't there. You called out his name and was met with the same silent answer. It would be very odd if you stepped in further and Hiccup came back at that exact moment. He might think you've came here to snoop around which was far from the truth.
You took a step back and closed the door behind you. It was late at night and the only rational reason for Hiccup's absence must be because he was out on a flight. It was a far stretch to go look for him, but you had nothing else to do so you ran to get Crystal. You knew the place Hiccup liked to go when he wanted to clear his head and you knew how to get to his secret hideaway.
Crystal was just as eager to go on a flight as well and she excitedly lift off. The two of you circled around the island and from there you flew forward to the 'rocky rocks', which were just plain broken boulders in the middle or the sea. After passing them, you turned left and saw 'Paradise', as Fishlegs calls it because the island was full of Gronckles. Then there was a place the merchants refer to as 'The lethal den'. It was basically a canyon with very lofty boulderstones, its almost impossible to sail there because of the tight space which is why no one dares to go through there.
Even though it was fairly easy for dragons to manoeuvre there, they still needed to be cautious. One wrong move could send a dragon plummeting towards the water. Crystal took many twists and turns until finally reaching the other side of the den. And fortunately that is where you found Hiccup. He was sitting at the very top of the hill and was petting Toothless who was curled around him like a snake. You heard Hiccup talk to Toothless but you weren't able to understand what he was saying. When Crystal landed, both of their heads turned back in surprise and Hiccup's face quickly shifted to a confused one.
"How did you find us?" Hiccup asked as you dismounted from your dragon. You were proud that your assumptions were correct and Hiccup was where you thought he would be.
"Magic." You chuckled, but stopped after seeing Hiccup was as serious as a heart attack.
"Um, this was the place you always came when you wanted to clear your head so I just assumed you were here." You replied seeing as there was no point in joking around. Hiccup on the other hand, thought that the only reason he chose this place was because there was a beautiful scenery. He wasn't aware that he used to come here before.
And now that you were here, he knew what to expect. "If you're planning on talking about earlier then don't. Just don't." Hiccup said sternly and you shrugged. You can spare a few minutes without saying something. What's the worst that can happen?
You sat down next to him and for the next couple of minutes Hiccup didn't say anything and you doubted he will.
"You know, you can't run from your problems forever." You said, trying to somehow bring him to talk. While you watched Hiccup, he was staring at the sea with a hard look. Not even sparing you a glance.
"Here we go again..." Hiccup rolled his eyes.
"No, I'm serious. What was that whole ordeal with Astrid? Why did you tell me you liked her when you didn't." You questioned, even though the chances of him answering right now were slim.
Hiccup let an exasperated sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Can we not do this right now? I'll tell you tomorrow. Just leave me alone."
You would've let this slide, but you were too persistent to give up now. You've came all the way to here and you didn't plan on leaving with no answers. "No, lets settle this once and for all."
You threw a slight fit of how Hiccup lied to you, that you didn't know why he was messing with you like this, but in the middle of you pouring out your soul, you noticed Hiccup's face change. Before, he was watching with a fed up expression and then it softened all of the sudden. You thought it was because of what you were saying but then Hiccup squinted his eyes and looked behind you.
"And I still don't understand- Okay, what are you looking at?" You seethed and spun around swiftly, wondering what was more interesting. It was very dark and you could barely see, but then your eyes concentrated in the distance and you saw something moving in the sea. It was a ship.
It wasn't going through 'the lethal den' instead it was passing it from the right side. Your mouth shut immediately when you realized that it could be a Dragon Hunters ship and they were heading straight towards the Edge and sooner or later they will find it.
"We have to check it out. Crystal let's go." You rushed towards your dragon and dismissed Hiccup's confused complains. You were already flying towards the sea when you heard an extra wing flapping from behind. You turned around just enough to spot the black dragon from the corner of your eyes. You've told Hiccup about the Dragon Hunters but you weren't sure if he knew how dangerous they were, especially if Ryker or Viggo was onboard.
Your worries died down upon closer inspection of the ship, it didn't belong to the Dragon Hunters but it wasn't a ship you were fond to see either. It was trader Johann's. Sailing in the middle of the night was uncommon for him and you wondered where he was headed at this time. You could've followed him, but you decided to pay a visit instead.
The ship rocked left and right when Crystal landed. The only light was that one provided from a lantern Johann was carrying in his hand, which was shining enough light for you to see the panicked look on the trader's face. He was usually scared of the dragons, but this time there was something else.
"Lady (Y/N)! Thank the gods you're here! I'm in dire need of your assistance." Johann exclaimed hurriedly before you got the chance to even greet him. You were all for helping people, but after the consequences from last time, you were reluctant to help the trader with whatever he needed.
Toothless and Hiccup arrived a second later and Johann rushed towards the two of you with fast steps. "Dragon Hunters looted my ship and took my treasures!"
While you wanted to say something like 'Oh, that's sad. Bye!', Hiccup started asking question over how that happened and how the two of you can help. You shot him a look when he mentioned you as well because clearly you weren't intending to help the man that turned your world upsidedown for the worst.
"Thank you master Hiccup! And for reward you can have anything you want from my treasures!" Were trader Johann's words before the two of you headed towards the place where he was robbed. The trader explained about an island he was at and how he was jumped by the Dragon Hunters before setting sail.
You could've just said you were busy but at the same time you didn't want to leave Hiccup alone, in case the story is actually true.
And that's how you found yourself on the island looking at the treasure chests that were left on shore completely unguarded. At first you were cautious thinking it was a trap and the Dragon Hunters will charge out of nowhere, but after scanning the area you found it was vacant. It was highly unusual coming from them, the Dragon Hunters weren't the type to leave their prize behind. And you were suspicious.
"Wow, its all here." Hiccup said with a surprised tone after opening one of the chests and seeing all the contents tucked inside. You proceeded to do the same and started rummaging through through it.
Now you weren't a trader, but you knew for a fact that all of the things you saw are from the poorest quality they can be. Most of the treasures were dirty, broken or had holes in them and to make up for it there were a couple it coins here and there. You didn't buy the story, something was off. This was definitely a set up.
"Crystal, on guard." You warned your dragon who leaned down in a cautious stance and started looking around the premises. You heard a scoff from the side and turned to Hiccup who had an amused smile.
"Oh please, its not like there's anyone here (Y/N). You have nothing to worry about." Hiccup's words offered no assurance. He was too busy searching for goods to even take notice about his surroundings.
"Okay, lets just take these stuff and leave." You sighed and picked up a smaller chest. You moved with quick steps, still feeling uneasy about the situation but you figured it could be just your imagination.
"I still don't- whoa!" You shrieked suddenly when an arrow hit the ground next to you. But there was no doubt it was meant for you instead. You whipped your head to the direction it came from and what you saw made your heart sink. Dozens Dragon Hunter archers were all aiming their arrows to you and Hiccup and in the middle of them stood Viggo. The most cunning smile was spread on his face while he was staring down.
"Hiccup! Its good to see you're alive and well." Viggo exclaimed enthusiastically, yet you couldn't tell whether it was fake or genuine. For a second Hiccup glanced at you with a confused expression and then back to the man above.
"What do you want Ryker." Hiccup said threateningly and a snort escaped your lips. You knew you shouldn't be laughing at the moment because the situation is dead serious, but the way Hiccup said the wrong name with so much certainty, it was beyond hilarious.
"Excuse me?" Viggo scoffed, clearly offended that he was mistaken for his brother. While all around him, you could tell the Dragon Hunters were having a hard time suppressing their amused grins. "It looks like you took quite the fall Hiccup."
"Isn't that Ryker?" Hiccup turned to you and his expression was nothing else but complete and utter surprise.
"No, Ryker is the bald one. This is Viggo." You laughed at how someone could fail so miserably.
"Enough chit-chat. Where is the Dragon Eye?" Viggo's fed up voice echoed from above, capturing both of your attention. And a smirk played on your lips.
"Somewhere you'll never find it." You replied cunningly. You were in no position to act bravely since dozens of arrows were pointed in your direction and one wrong move could send you straight to Valhalla. You depended on Crystal covering you with her wings if they decided to fire, since it wouldn't be so lethal on her dragon skin unlike yours. But what you failed to notice before were the green tips on the arrow and all of the fearlessness was wiped away once you realized that one touch of them and the dragons were bound to the ground.
"But if you want we can go get it for you? Just wait for us here." You added innocently enough.
"You think I'm some kind of a fool? Letting you go free like that?" Viggo hissed.
"Maybe it would've worked on Ryker." You shrugged nonchalantly. But your eyes were still darting left and right in panic while you were trying to find a way to escape safely. You just needed to keep Viggo occupied enough, but you could tell you were getting on his last nerves.
"Well I am not like my brother. I'm smarter than he'll ever be." Viggo shot back, his hard gaze fixated on Hiccup alone. And it was undeniably because he wanted to make sure Hiccup will remember who he is from now on.
"Good for you! Now be smart and let us go. We won't hurt you." You said with a half-feigned determination. A loud laugh erupted from Viggo, followed by everyone else around him. You took the chance and looked at your surroundings, to your right there was nothing but the sandy shore so going there was not an option. Flying away with the dragons would be a death wish since the Dragon Hunters will start firing arrows before you could even saddle up.
Your best chance was going left, there were a few palm trees that could offer some cover and the best case scenario would be reaching the cave that's slightly visible from where you're standing.
"I don't think you're in the position to be saying that." Viggo replied as a matter-of-factly, he didn't seem the least threatened from your warning.
And while Viggo was ranting about how you were surrounded and had nowhere to go, you turned to Hiccup trying to tell him the plan.
"Okay, listen carefully. We head straight to that cave on the right sade. Do you see it?" You tilted your head to that direction, trying to make it as discreet as possible so no one else could tell what you were doing.
"Got it." Hiccup's response was cut short when Viggo's irritated sounded from the hill.
"Are you even listening to me?" From the tone of his voice you knew this was the last straw and you knew for a fact he will order his men to fire. Which is why you decided to surprise them. With one quick nod you gave Hiccup the signal and the two of you made a run for it.
You could hear all the arrows released and the sound of them swirling then hitting the ground with a loud thud. Each time your heart stopped when you thought that the next one could land on you. Hiccup ordered Toothless to fire and you thought it would be directed on the Dragon Hunters but instead Toothless shot the ground in front of you, creating a fog of sand. It was a genius idea now that the Dragon Hunters can't see where you are, but that didn't mean the arrows stopped. They were more fierce, but less concentrated. Now running in the sand was definitely not in your favour and you lost balance many times, nearly risking falling on the ground.
But somehow you managed to see the cave entrance and it filled you with a renewed hope. You quickened your pace and watched Hiccup leap inside as quick as lighting. Toothless and Crystal followed, both toppling on the ground and crashing against the wall.
You were the last one out. But you came to an abrupt stop when out of nowhere an arrow whizzed in front of your face. You felt the strong gust of air hit your face as the arrow passed. It was just inches away from your face and it was only then that your heart dropped to your stomach. If you were a bit forward then this could've been a fatal headshot.
A whimper unwillingly spilled past your lips as you hurried inside. You were breathing heavily, both from the running and from the near death experience. But your breath hitched when you felt two gentle hands cup your face. Suddenly no air was filling up your lungs and all that you could see were Hiccup's concerned green eyes.
"Oh my gods, are you okay? Did you get hit anywhere?" Hiccup asked, worry dripping with every word he said. You were so taken aback by his sudden affection since you've gotten used to being treated like you were just a random person to him.
"I-I'm fine." You stammered, still gazing deep into his eyes.
