Chapter 13

petrichor

(n.) the scent of rain on dry earth

The flight back to Dragon's edge was quite uneventful and you figured that everyone would go back to their huts, but instead they all went to the clubhouse, including yourself. You were all sitting around the fireplace and doing their your activities, Fishlegs had his head buried in the Dragon book while Astrid was sharpening her axe, the twins were bickering as usual and at the end Snotlout was annoying Hiccup who was tinkering with his Dragon blade.

You made your way next to Hiccup and sat next to him while listening to his and Snotlout's conversation, but because they weren't aware of that it felt more like eavesdropping.

"Listen Hiccup, I know you have a gambling problem so I'm the guy that can help you!"

"Snotlout, for the last time, what in Thor's name are you talking about?"

A giggle escaped your lips and you quickly put your hands on your mouth, though that didn't matter because Hiccup and Snotlout were now looking at you with their eyebrows risen which only made things funnier.

"I mean can you imagine that, Hiccup a gambler." At the end you burst into laughter and soon after Hiccup laughed as well, the only person standing out was Snotlout who seemed unfazed and still continued his little talk with Hiccup. You continued to sketch around in your notebook but your mind went to different places, after a moment of not being able to focus you sighed and looked around the others.

They all looked so calm it made you wonder how they aren't tired yet. These past days things have been stressful and you were so grateful that you had friends like these, if they hadn't helped you Crystal still would've been stuck in that awful place.

"Guys I can't thank you enough for helping me save Crystal, honestly I'm so thankful." you voiced out your thoughts and you were instantly met with everyone's warm smiles, they insisted it was not a problem but you still felt kind of guilty that you brought everyone in that mess. The next half of hour passed by everyone talking to each other and at the moment the theme was about Ryker.

"The way you locked him in the cage was priceless!" Astrid exclaimed with a slight laughter at the end, your lips stretched into a smile when your remembered that moment. It was a genius plan that was true and you were still amazed at how you even thought about it so quickly because you weren't that type of person that would think of plans right on spot, that was Hiccup's job and you praised him for that.

"Yeah, I'm glad its over though." You said and glanced at the pencil in front of you, it had to be sharpened so you excused yourself and went to get a knife from your hut. But when you came back you were met with the twins tossing around your notebook, they were careless of course and you felt relieved you didn't have your old notebook that was filled with random papers aside because if you did they would be flying around now.

"Hey! Hey! Give it back you guys!" You screamed and dashed over to get the notebook from Ruffnut's hands. She frowned and held it out, just as you were about to grab it, Ruffnut's frown turn into a lopsided smirk and she threw your notebook to Tuffnut. You growled at Ruff and went back to Tuffnut.

"Tuff! Over here!" You heard Snotlout yell from behind and now you were chasing after him. The next minute passed in you running around in circles with no success of getting your notebook back. Astrid and Fishlegs were quietly observing the situation, but from time to time you heard them share some laughter. At the moment you were chasing after Tuffnut who was going straight to the angle of the room, your lips curved into a smile, thinking that you had him cornered but you were so wrong.

"Hiccup! Catch!" Tuffnut exclaimed and threw your notebook to Hiccup who struggled to catch it but didn't let it fall. You turned your heels and walked to his direction, you let out a small unnoticeable sigh thinking that the running was over, you closed the distance and looked into his eyes, a glimmer of mischief flashed in them and what happened next left everyone stunned.

Hiccup flung the notebook at Snotlout and it left you stare at him with a look of disbelief on your features.

"Hiccup's joining the dark side." You heard Astrid's comment and everyone's laugh, including yours as well. Your notebook was tossed around for another round and then when it landed back in Hiccup's hands he dashed away heading to the exit, when he was out of sight everyone began yelling at him to come back and this was not fair, you ignored their cries and ran after Hiccup.

He must've heard your thrumming footsteps because he turned around and sent you a triumphant wink. Your cheeks heated up and it made you run faster, Hiccup took a sudden step left and went inside his hut, after you reached it you went inside. There was no other light except that one provided by the moon and finding him turned out a challenge, suddenly two arms were curled around you and you let out a loud yelp.

"Hiccup!" You exclaimed giggling, for a moment you forgot about your notebook and just relaxed in Hiccup's arms. He placed his head onto your shoulders and nuzzled into your neck, a shiver went down your spine because of Hiccup's unexpected action, but frankly, you missed this nearness.

You stayed in that position for a while, wrapped in each other's arms while a pleasant silence loomed over. Then something popped in your head and it made you remember two certain people.

"Hiccup?" You asked and got a hum in response, "I was wondering, who are Heather and Dagur?" You knew you hit something deep because Hiccup instantly pulled away and stared at you with shock plastered over his face.

"You met Dagur?!" Hiccup exclaimed, disbelief laced into his tone and it matched the look on his face.

"Yes." Your voice trailed off, you stood motionlessly while Hiccup paced around. It left you confused to his actions, wondering why he was acting this way but you figured Hiccup needed time to let the information sink in. After a few seconds he calmed himself down and glanced back at you.

"Sorry, uh, I just- I wasn't really expecting that." Hiccup confessed and you smiled warmly, you took his hands in your own and intertwined them, after looking up you saw him looking overly worried. You had never seen him this anxious, but decided not to say anything about it

"Dagur or better known as Dagur the deranged, is the chief of the Berserker tribe and we've been enemies ever since he found out that we are dragon-friendly." Hiccup simplified and you nodded in response, that left you wondering who the black haired girl was so you decided to ask. After minutes of explanation you finally got the big picture and the whole story behind all of this, yet it still bothered you why Heather was on the ship, why she was on their side. You sighed not wanting to care about it anymore considering its all over so you went and grabbed your notebook that was on Hiccup's desk.

"I'm so tired." You whined and lazily walked over to Hiccup, after that you slammed your head onto his chest and closed your eyes. As if out of instinct, Hiccup wrapped his arms around you and you did the same.

"Then go rest." Hiccup said with a slight chuckle, you grunted at his offer and pushed back just enough to look at his face.

"But I want to stay with you!" You pleaded.

"Then sleep here?" Hiccup's words made you burst in laughter and part away from him, even if you were laughing you still couldn't suppress the heat in your cheeks.

"Thanks but I'll pass." You murmured and pecked his lips for a goodnight kiss. You saw the surprise cross his features for a second, but he quickly hid it with his heartwarming smile which made you grin in return. After exiting his hut you were shocked to find the twins standing outside.

"Guys?!" You yelped loudly, suddenly you began to worry if they had seen and heard everything you did inside and it made you wonder how long they had been there. The twins shared a confused glance and then looked back at you in the exact same time.

"I mean, what's up?" You tried hiding the embarrassment with a sheepish laugh, but that made the twins squint their eyes slightly.

"We were just going to our hut." Tuffnut replied.

"Yeah, you guys were gone for awful lot of time."  Ruffnut's words made your heart skip a beat, you began wondering if she was suspecting something and your assumptions were right because she asked the question you were hoping she wouldn't.

"What were you two doing?"

"We were...just planning some tactics! You know in case anyone attacks us." It took you a second to figure out what you were going to say and in the end you hoped they would believe the lie.

"You ladies can chat all you want I'm going now, good night, (Y/N)." Tuffnut said and began walking away without you having any chance to speak.

"Night, Tuff!" You yelled at him to hear because he was far away. After that you shared a glance with Ruffnut then she gave you a smirk before running after Tuffnut, her last action made you feeling slightly wary around her.

You sighed, now two people were on to you, first it was Astrid now Ruffnut. At the end, you spent the whole night thinking if it was finally time to reveal your relationship with Hiccup.

-----

"Alright guys s-" Hiccup was abruptly cut off when a Terrible Terror landed on his shoulders. The gang was gathered in the dome and were waiting Hiccup to tell today's agenda but instead he got a Terror mail.

You saw Hiccup's eyes dart from word to word as he was reading the letter and he finally looked up once he finished. "It's from Berk, a new girl has arrived today so my dad wants us to meet her."

You didn't think much of it, but only later will you find that you were very, very wrong.

The flight to Berk was quite uneventful, nobody saw anything out of the ordinary and everyone just enjoyed the peace and quiet. When all of you arrived, the Berkians greeted you happily and it just warmed your heart.

Hiccup and you went to the Great Hall speculating that the chief is there and he was, along with a girl you haven't seen before. Her crimson red hair was curled in a messy bun and her eyes piercing blue, once the two of you made eye contact you instantly felt like she was staring at your soul.
But when a cunning smirk played on her thick, chapped lips you knew something was dangerously off.

As you walked closer her eyes never left yours and her stare only deepened with each step you took. When you arrived, her face shifted to an cheerful expression and she averted her gaze to Hiccup.

"Hiccup! Had a nice flight?" The chief beamed and he hugged his son tightly as always, you laughed at Hiccup's squirming face while he struggled to take breath. And finally Stoick let him go and walked over to the red haired girl. "Son, meet Mariah the Magnificent."

You couldn't help but scowl when she spoke, her voice was so gravely and raspy it made you cringe internally.
"I prefer only Mariah." She said and laughed, her tone boomed in the otherwise silent room.

"My name is H-Hiccup." You snapped your head at Hiccup when you heard his stutter, he rarely does that around newcomers and that's what made you confused. Sure enough his cheeks were suffused with a tint of blush, after seeing him like this you didn't know how to react.

"That's a lovely name for a handsome viking like you." Mariah's said in a sensual tone, her words made your blood boil inside and you jerked your head towards her just in time to see her winking at Hiccup. He only laughed sheepishly and murmured a single 'thank you' while his blush darkened even more.

"So how about we take a stroll around the village?" She offered and in the same time linked arms with Hiccup, this sight was enough and you knew she crossed the line.

"Sorry, but Hiccup can't walk you around." You grasped Hiccup's free arm and yanked him towards you, he staggered a bit but didn't loose his balance. Mariah stared at you with wide eyes and parted lips but you held your determined look.

She blinked away the shocked face and cleared her throat. "No worries then, I will find someone else." Her mischievous smirk reappeared again and it made you want to puke.

"Yeah, you do that and Hiccup and I will have a little chat." You sent warning glared at Hiccup while he stared back with a puzzled face. You began pulling him in the exist and once you were there his face turned into a glare.

"What was that all about?" He questioned and you could notice the slight anger in his tone.

"I don't know, maybe the fact that Mariah was obviously flirting with you!" Your voice was calm at first but then you unleased the fury you've been holding in.

"So? It's not like I flirted back." Hiccup replied harshly and your face softened. He was right and you realized you have overreacted, you began to internally curse the jealousy for some seconds and then looked back at Hiccup.

You were taken aback when Hiccup cupped your cheeks and said the most heartwarming words in the most soothing tone ever. "Listen, if you think that I'm going to fall in love with her or something and then replace you with her then you're dead wrong. I love only one person and that's you."

"Hiccup..." You trailed off, you felt your eyes glistened with tears but you kept them at bay, not wanting to cry at the moment. His words made you overjoyed and you couldn't express your happiness with words so you hugged him closely.

The moment you heard the door creek open you backed away from Hiccup and looked at the person exiting. Your face eyebrows furrowed when you saw it was none other than Mariah.

"Oh hello! I hope I'm not interrupting your conversation!" She exclaimed obnoxiously loud.

"No, no, not at all. We were just leaving." you replied and faked a smile.

"Great! I was too so I'll join you!" Mariah response made you chomp on your lips in order to not yell inappropriate words at her and you just stared at her.

As you were walking you kept interrupting her small talk with Hiccup and gave her hints to stop flirting with.

"So, Mariah, where are you from?" You asked and didn't hide the venomous tone in your voice.

"I'm from Dort. Its a small island and we wanted to open trades with Berk!" There was something fishy in her words but you couldn't quite put it together.

"I've never heard of it before, it must be out of the archipelago." You retorted.

"No, its close."

"Oh, really? Then we should visit it."

"There isn't anything interesting there so if would be pointless."

As the conversation escalated your suspicion grew even more, Mariah tried to avert your questions for her home to something else and you let her, knewing her answers were lies.

Soon all of you arrived in the centre of the village and your smile grew when you saw the gang talking to each other. Hiccup called out to them and they all turned their gaze to look at him, the boys eyes widened once they saw Mariah.

When you arrived near them, Mariah batted her eyelashes and greeted them with lecherious glances. You squinted you eyes in disgust and walked over to Astrid and Ruffnut, at the same time you heard light footsteps following behind and without looking back you knew Mariah was following.

Before you reached the girls, Mariah ran pass you. "Hi! I'm Mariah!" She beamed when she arrived in front of them. Ruffnut casually greeted her back and introduced herself while Astrid kept her deadly glare and coldly replied her name.

When you joined them, the girls greeted you and from the corner of your eye you saw Mariah looking at you from top to bottom and then she asked, "Hey, (Y/N), are you and Hiccup dating?"

You almost chocked on your spit, but quickly composed yourself and stared at Mariah. From your pheriperal vision you saw Astrid and Ruffnut's curious gazes and you just shook your head in response. Instantly her lips formed a triumphant smirk which you wanted to wipe it away so bad yet you could only watch her eyes burning with determination.

"Well then, I guess I have a chance with him." You only glared when she said that and it took everything in you not to start shouting at her. She looked at over her shoulder and glanced at the boys, but you knew specifically who she was watching.

"Doubt it. Maybe you should try your luck with Snotlout." You replied smugly. You could easily guess that Mariah didn't even care who you were talking about and that her mind was fixed on Hiccup and him only.

"Nobody can resist me, (Y/N), not even Hiccup." She chuckled, feeling so sure of herself and this time you were smirking at her with full confidence.

"He totally can. Egotistical people aren't really his type." Once those words escaped your lips, Mariah's face turned into a serious expression, but it didn't last long because she hid it with a smile.

"Well then, I'm just gonna make them his type." With that sentence Mariah left and it left you standing and gritting your teeth in the barely contained rage.
