Chapter 1

serendipity

(n.) finding something good without looking for it.

You were peacefully laying next to your dragon Crystal and just enjoying the sound of rain outside. You've been scouring your daggers for quite a while now and it became too boring to continue.  Sighing loudly you tied the perfectly polished knives on your thighs and tilted around to face Crystal.

"Hey." you gently petted your dragon. "Do you want to go for a quick walk?"  Crystal roared in response and slowly stretched.

"Yay! You're the best!" you said happily and giggled.   Crystal nudged her head on your stomach and roared happily from the compliment she got.

Both of you walked out of the cave and started walking. The gray clouds above you seemed like they are not leaving any time soon. The rain rapidly fell down and as it went it pounded down on the many trees surrounding them. And the wind flew around carrying the fragrance of the nature, though you would expect a cold wind, but it wasn't , it was a pleasantly warm wind gradually increasing its speed as minutes pass by.

This was your ideal weather since you were little.  It was sad that it didn't rain quite frequently like the way you wanted to, but you had always been happy when it did!  You loved the feeling of the rain drops colliding with your face.  It made you feel so relaxed and calm.

You lifted your head up and twirled around while laughing, Crystal mimicked you and started running in circles.  All of the sudden the cloudy sky lit up by the strike of lightning and loud thunder followed afterwards. That clearly got your attention and your grin began to stretch from ear to ear.

"Oh my gods!  That was amazing! Did you see that girl?" you exclaimed still looking at the sky. When Crystal didn't replay you looked at her, surprised to see her ears perked up. Crystal looked very distressed for some reason and rapidly looked around.  Before you could react Crystal sprinted away somewhere.  You quickly ran after her, the mud splashing around with each step you took.  Even though you were a fast runner, you were no match for a dragon's speed. The only thing you wondered at the moment was was where Crystal was headed to because this has never happened and it definitely peeked your curiosity.

Crystal stopped running and when you reached her you leaned on her for support, the running made you out of breath and now you were breathing heavily.  While resting you looked around and saw something laying on the seashore.  Your eyes widened and you gasped loudly when you realized it was a body covered in mud, but even if you were surprised you took out your sword straightaway.

'It could be a trap so just in case.' was your only worry at the moment while you started approaching the body with Crystal closely following from behind.

Out of nowhere, some bushes nearby started rustling and a black Night Fury emerged from them.  Your jaw dropped at the sight, you had only heard that they existed, but never been face to face with one, and on top of that on your island!  For some seconds you stood there completely mesmerized by its beauty, but you were brought back to reality when the dragon started snarling.  What confused you the most is that the dragon walked to the person and stopped closely next to the person laying on the ground as if defending them.

You took a step forward and the dragon growled again.  It lowered its eyes to your sword and back into yours.  You got what it meant and threw the sword away far out of reach, you moved again and the dragon growled once more. You sighed in annoyance and looked down at yourself if you had any other weapon because the dragon obviously won't let you near the person till you removed them all.  The only remaining thing were your daggers tied around your thighs. You threw them away and they fell in a puddle of mud, that made you groan internally because you had to polish them again.

You took another step expecting a growl but it didn't it just stared at you and you noticed that its face had lit up.  You crouched down next to the body and turned it around, it had dirt all over them and their features weren't clear.  You moved your arms towards the person's neck, checking if they still had pulse and sighed in relief when you found one.  Even if it was faint, it was still there.  You grabbed the person under their shoulder and dragged them to Crystal who sat down so you could easily place the person on her back.  You patted Crystal telling her to take you home and turned around making a hand gesture to the other dragon to follow you it and quickly caught up.

Once all of you were in the cave Crystal sat down next to the bed so that you can easily transfer the person on the bed.  Crystal then moved away and shook off the water from her body, the other dragon had done that the second it entered the cave.  You heard the basket fall and turned around to see Crystal grabbing one of the fish there.  She walked to the dragon and spat it on the floor.  The dragon looked at the fish and then at Crystal back and forth.  Crystal moved the fish closer to the dragon who finally understood what she meant and ate it.

You smiled at the sight, slightly surprised from Crystal's gesture.  She normally doesn't approach first but here she is, voluntarily giving food.  You took a bowl of water in one hand and a cloth in other, you sat on a chair next to the bed which you placed before.

You dipped the cloth in the cold water and began dabbing it on the person's face.  Once the dirt was fully cleared you noticed that the person is in fact a boy.  You awkwardly laughed at yourself because at first you thought it was a girl because of his body structure.  This boy was not like an average viking, he was not buff like the other people she had seen.  You were very curious of how he got here.  Though for now you only hope he wakes up soon.   Aside from that thought the black dragon caught your attention and you stared it for a while.

You noticed half of his tail was red and obviously man-made, it also had a saddle attached to it meaning that it had a rider. You looked back at the boy and figured it must be him then you felt a pang of sadness when you saw the boy had a missing leg,  it must've been really rough for him. But then you noticed the similarities, the dragon had a missing tail and the boy had a missing leg, it was like they belonged together.

A few minutes later you realized you had gotten lost in thought and got up making your way to the basked with a dumb idea already forming in your head.  You took out a fish and walked to the dragons who were previously chasing each other.  They stopped their tracks as soon as they noticed you when you got close to them.  You walked forward to the black dragon and swung the fish in front of its face.

"It's for you!" you smiled and the dragon came closer. At first it hesitated and was unsure, but then it swiftly snatched it from your hand and started eating. "Good girl!" you exclaimed happily and clapped your hands, but the dragon stopped chewing and looked at you with a annoyed expression. You laughed when you realized the mistake you made.

"Oh! Sorry my mistake, boy."  you apologized and corrected yourself.  The dragon swallowed the food, but some seconds later he threw the half eaten fish next to Crystal who gladly took it and ate it.

"Awsh!  You're sharing your food with Crystal!  How nice of you!  Also kind of gross." you said happily and chuckled at the end.

Crystal walked away and laid in her bed that you made for her.  You were now left alone with the dragon.  Slowly you turned around and deeply gaped into its electric green eyes and the darker shade around them, the light from the candle dancing near its jet black pupils.

"I can't believe I'm doing this." you whispered and inhaled. You slowly moved your palm towards the dragon who unexpectedly moved its head and your hand came in contact with it's snout.

"I..." you blinked repeatedly not being able to process the situation.  "I touched a Night Fury." you whispered and took a pause between each word you said.

"I touched a Night Fury!" you repeated again, but this time even louder and more excited.  The dragon moved forward and laid his head on your lap and needless to say you were very startled.

"This is too good to be true." you breathed out and started stroking its head.  After some minutes you yawned while leaning on the dragon and it wasn't long until you fell sound asleep.

-----

The next day you awoke laying on the cold ground floor. The memories from yesterday flashed back and you remembered that you fell asleep on the dragon, but it certainly didn't feel like like you were laying on it now. Slowly getting up, you rubbed your eyes and wiped away the sleepy sand at the same time. Once your vision was cleared you noticed the black dragon was licking the boy who was still in bed. You pitied the dragon and patted it when you walked to it.

Then you walked to the table and took the bowl filled with water, you spun around and steadily walked with it to the chair next to the bed. You didn't knew how this was going to help the boy, but it was better to do something rather than nothing. You were very careful and tried not to spill it everywhere, when you sat you placed the bowl in your lap and looked at the dragon next to you.

"You miss him that much, eh?" you asked the dragon with a quiet tone which was raspy as expected, considering you just woke up from your slumber. The dragon simply whined in response and went away somewhere. You just yawned and dipped a cloth in the water, but what you were oblivious to was the confused staring from the boy while doing so.

When you looked up you didn't expect a pair of green eyes to be opened. That resulted into you gasping quietly and jumping in the same time, nearly dropping the bowl from your lap. You didn't know what to do or say in this situation and you were totally unprepared to even begin with. Both of you stared at each other with matching puzzled faces.

"Uh, who are you?" He finally spoke after some minutes of silence, his voice held a mixture of confusion and a bit of fear.

"Who are you?" you copied his question because you weren't sure who this person is or who was he working for and plus he is in your home so you had all the rights to know first.

The boy opened his mouth to speak but didn't get the chance to answer because the black dragon ran towards the bed and licked the boy and in the same time knocked you out from the chair you were sitting on. You just sighed and stayed on the ground for a moment

"Toothless! Thank Thor you're okay bud!" The boy said and hugged the dragons head who let a excited roar. Your theory about the boy being the dragon's friend was correct, you stared at amazement because they were as close as you and Crystal were. The boy had been knocked out for a day and still cares about the dragon more than himself and that's saying something.

You left them catch up for a moment, but saw they had no intention of stopping or they just simply forgot about you were there so you cleared your throat to catch their attention. The boy seemed to have heard you so he gently pushed the dragon away, the dragon just walked back to you and you patted him on its head. You looked up at the boy to find him confused again, he looked at the dragon then at you back and forth with a puzzled face.

"He never let's strangers touch him." the boy slowly spoke after some seconds and you finally found out why he was that confused.

"Well this stranger's name is (Y/N)(L/N) and I'm the one who saved you from..." you proudly started, but then realized you didn't know what exactly happened to him so you stopped a bit before continuing again. "From whatever happened to you."

Getting up you walked to the table and poured water in a cup, you then took a plate of previously roasted fish and started walking back. When you sat back in the chair you handed them to the boy which gladly took them. Before you got the chance to ask for the boy's name he said it on his own, almost as if he read your mind.

"By the way, my name is Hiccup Haddock." He finally answered the thing you wondered the most. You smiled and nodded, after that you didn't know what to say so you stayed quiet. That worked for some times before you began to feel the awkward silence raising so you were now desperately trying to find a way to start a conversation but apparently Hiccup had the same plan and beat you to it.

"How long was I passed out?" He took a bite of his fish and waited for your response.

"One day, thankfully not much." You calculated quickly and simply shrugged your shoulders.

"Yeah, thank Thor!" Hiccup chuckled and sipped his water. He hasn't done anything suspicious so you didn't think of him as a spy or anything. Though you wondered who he actually was but chose not to ask.

"Me and Crystal found you knocked out on the sand. You have a really loyal dragon, by the way. He didn't let me near you till I took all my weapons away!" You said and for some reason got really excited at the end. You have never seen or heard about dragon riders other than yourself and it was kind of comforting to find that you aren't the only one.

"I'm still surprised he let you pet him!" Hiccup talked with mouthful, clearly not patient enough tell you after he was finished. You noticed a few chunks flew off and bit your upper lip trying to restrain from laughing.

"By the way, what happened to you?" you asked after some seconds of internally laughing, but now it was serious time because you was going to find out how this person ended up on your island.

"The Skrill attacked me." Hiccup simply replied and shrugged. You had read about that particular dragon a long time ago and in you book it said that they don't exist anymore. But that doesn't mean you don't believe what Hiccup told you because Crystal found them after the lightning so it fits.

"The Skrill? I thought those species were extinct?" you asked with confusion very noticeable in your voice.

"Not really. My friends and I were flying to Berk to check on stuff and it was pretty cloudy and a Skrill popped out of nowhere." He clarified and took a sip of his water before talking again. When he told you about other people flying dragons you were very surprised and now you began wondering how many dragon riders are out there.

"And I think I got hit by one of its lightning so that's why I'm here. " He finished and smiled. Frankly, you felt as if he wasn't telling the truth because the story was just too short, but if there was more to it you were certain Hiccup would've told you.

"I'm sorry that happened, Hiccup." you expressed your sympathy and truly meant it. It was the least you could do too. "It's okay, it passed." Hiccup assured you after he swallowed the last piece of the fish.

A loud wing flapping was heard and both of you turned your head to face the source of the sound. Crystal gracefully landed and Toothless sprinted towards her. They both sat down and Crystal ate her fish while Toothless just stared at her. You watched Hiccup and noticed his face lit up. What could possible made him that excited was what you wondered.

"Is that a another Night Fury?!" He jumped out the bed and jogged towards to the dragons, you followed him as well.

You stood next to Crystal and shook your head. "Sadly no. That's what I thought at first too though!" And it was true, they really do look alike because of their body structure and from afar its unrecognizable. But up close the differences are very visible, Crystal's scales were feathers and her double sided tail was made of spines who are almost as powerful as those of the Deadly Nadder. Crystal didn't have two sets of wings like Toothless does so that makes her slower than him.

You knelt down and started stroking Crystal who started purring. Once you looked at Hiccup and saw his face wasn't as excited as just a second ago. Hiccup sat next to Toothless and leaned on him before speaking with a slightly disappointed voice. "Frankly, I really hoped it was because Toothless is the only known Night Fury around and it would've been great if we found another."

"Isn't that right, bud?" Hiccup stroked Toothless who cooed in response. "We're still looking though, who knows maybe we'll find one."

"Same here, Crystal is rare as a Night Fury too." You gave a sad smile. "She wasn't even in the book of dragons. I named her species as 'Stealth strike' because when I first met her I didn't hear her when she came near me and the 'strike' part is because of her sharp spines which build her tail. It's really stupid, I know." You told him and only then you realized that you were just rambling.

"No, it's a great name and the meaning behind it is great too. If you think that's stupid just remember that Toothless and I named an island 'Itchy armpit'." he gave a loud laugh and you joined him too.

"And let me guess, it was Toothless's idea, right?" you asked and gave a cheesy smile. You didn't know if Hiccup was exploring islands or just stumbled upon one, though if he did in fact explore them it would make you two alike because you have been exploring islands for the past years.

"Yep!" Hiccup responded and patted Toothless.

"How are you feeling? I never got the chance to ask." you questioned and laid next to Crystal, you were kind of ashamed that you didn't ask him this sooner, but he seemed to not mind it so it was okay.

"Pretty good. And sorry I never got the chance to thank you for your hospitality and everything else." Hiccup said very sincerely. "It's not a problem" You replied and it seemed like that was the end of the conversation.

For some time you observed the things around you. Because you were sat in the middle of the cave you could see both the entrance and the end as well. The cave was small and lit by candles who were sat on both sides of the cave, they were big and stretched from the beginning of the cave to the end of it. Your wooden bed was placed in the left corner, on top of the bed there was a big cloth filled with sheep wool and it made the bed ten times comfier.

Next to the bed there was a big chest filled with random things you owned. The thing that you owned the most were your notebooks, journals and drawings from the years before. Some jewels was somewhere there and many coins were scattered inside as well. On the far right corner was Crystal's bed, it was just a big plank with lots of decorations on the side, made by you.

In the center of the cave there was the fire place. It was just woods piled up in a circle of rocks, ready to be burned. The table was placed right next to the right side of the cave, on it were just one bowl and one cup, just for you. And Crystal's basket full of fish was placed next to the table. On the walls of the cave there were ornate shields and some shelves who had wooden sculptures made by yourself. The cave was cozy and perfect and you adored every single bit of it.

Your gaze fell on Hiccup and Toothless and for some reason you found it kind of funny seeing how both of you were laying on your dragons opposite of each other. You took out a notebook who was inside your fur vest and took a pencil too. Half of the notebook was a personalized version of the book of dragons you once had, you copied some of the information from there, but added many yourself. You opened the page for Night Fury, the page you thought you would never write in.

You began drawing Toothless in the book, he was actually the first drawing of a napping dragon in your notebook. Often when you find a new dragon you have to quickly scribble it before it flies, but now you took your time seeing as this dragon was not going anywhere soon.

You finished fairly quickly and added the final details. Before closing the notebook you took a last glance and saw something was wrong on your drawing. You opened it again and quickly fixed it. Once you ware satisfied with the drawing you slammed shut the notebook and put it back inside in your vest.

Your gaze fell on Hiccup who hasn't said anything in the past fifteen minutes so you figured he was just snoozing. You also assumed he must've been really tired to fall asleep that quickly. Having nothing else to do you closed your eyes and rested for a bit, promising to yourself that you would get up, but instead you accidentally fell asleep.
