CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The day passed quickly, Rick had gone out with Hershal, Maggie and Beth's boyfriend Jimmy. No one quite knew why, but Isabella had a feeling he was trying to bargain with her uncle once again about staying at the farm - even if only for the winter months. With the commotion from down at the barn once again, Isabella put Ginger back inside, this time telling her to go upstairs and get ready for a nap. Isabella and Daryl raced down from the porch and to the barn where Shane was yelling out about how we need to protect the living, and kill the Walkers in the barn. The man was handing out guns to everyone, before stopping in front of Daryl. "Are you going to protect your own?" Shane asked, glancing over to Isabella before looking back to Daryl, the man nodded and grabbed the shot gun out of his hand.

"Give me one," Isabella announced, making Shane look back at her shocked. "What did you say, princess?" Shane asked with a chuckle. "I said, give me a damn gun or I'll go back up to the house and get my own," Isabella said sternly, holding out her hand. Finally, Shane handed the woman a pistol. Not long after, Rick was meeting the group, a walker caught in a snare. Shane didn't hesitate to sprint up to the group of three and start yelling at Rick before his attention turned to Hershal. "These things aren't alive!" the man yelled, pulling out his pistol and shooting the walker that Hershal held onto. Shane sent three shots into the walker that Hershal held onto before finally, shooting it in the head so it would finally fall.

Everything happened so fast, Isabella couldn't keep up with everyone's motions before Shane ran up to the barn and broke the lock that held the doors shut. Walkers pooled out faster than anyone expected. "You don't gotta be here!" Daryl said to Isabella who shook her head and raised her gun. "I am not helpless!" Isabella grunted, shooting a walker in the head. The two stayed by each other's side, when something caught her eye. What she could tell was once a mess of fluffy black hair, and torn jeans and a now rotting band shirt. "Ben?" the woman whispered to herself. Daryl looked over to the woman, before looking at the walker that had caught her eye. Daryl couldn't think twice, Isabella looked like she was going to make a run for it. But he was the last one standing, and Isabella would have been a four course meal. "That's my brother, no!" Isabella screamed, making the first step to break into a sprint before Daryl wrapped his arm around the woman as they fell to the ground.

Glenn looked over to his best friend, his eyes full of sadness as he watched the woman sob. Glenn raised his gun once more before pulling the trigger. Ben Scott falling, whatever form of life he once had left in him now gone. "No!" Isabella screamed, her sobs echoing through the vast fields of the farm that they resided on. Daryl held tightly onto the woman, when a little girl stepped out of the barn and into the light. "Sophia!" Carol cried, Daryl watched as the woman ran past him as he let out a huff. The girl that he spent days looking for, almost killing himself over, was in there all along. Less than 30 feet away from where they were living their lives, she was stuck in the back of the barn. Rick was the one who ended it, before Carol had a chance to get close enough to her.

"Isabella," Daryl said softly to the woman in his arms. She was shaking under him with sobs, shaking her head back and forth in denial. "Isabella, we should go back up to the house." Daryl encouraged. "I can't. I can't let Ginger see me like this." Isabella cried, trying to stop the falling tears as best as she could. Daryl lifted her chin to look up at him, brushing away her tears with the pads of his thumbs. "She should know that her uncle Ben is gone." Daryl told the woman softly.

Isabella's eyes were now a shade darker, like a storm cloud had presented itself over the rough waves of the ocean. "She should know." Daryl repeated, finally making Isabella nod her head. "You're right." Isabella whispered, taking a deep breath, trying to catch her breath. Daryl assisted her up slowly, uncomfortably allowing the woman to wrap her arms around him in a tight hug. The man wrapped his arm around her shoulder, as she allowed herself to steady her breath. Shuffling feet on the dirt ground could be heard approaching them. Isabella looked up and over her shoulder to see Glenn approaching the pair. Isabella slowly released Daryl from her tight grip before turning and pulling Glenn into a hug.

"I'm sorry, Isabella." Glenn whispered, his hand on the back of the woman's head, as his other arm was wrapped around her shoulders. "It's okay." Isabella told him, holding back the tears that fought so hard to resurface once again. "Thank you for doing what I couldn't." Isabella told him, pulling away from her best friend slightly. "I never would have been able to do what you did." She added on, giving him a soft smile before turning to look back at Daryl. "We should go back to Ginger." the woman told him.

Daryl nodded his head, waiting for the woman to thank Glenn once more before she was walking in tow with Daryl. The two made the journey to the house quietly, before welcoming themselves into the house. Ginger was sitting on the couch, her eyes trained on the TV before she looked up to her mom and Daryl. "Mommy!" the girl cried before jumping up off of the couch and into her mothers arms. "Are you okay?" Ginger asked her mom, wiping away at her face. Isabella gave her daughter a soft smile, before nodding her head.

"Let's go upstairs, mommy has to tell you something okay?" Isabella said to her daughter, making Ginger nod her head. "Is Daryl coming too?" Ginger asked, looking over to the man that stood beside her mother. Before Daryl could protest, Isabella quickly butt in. "Of course, my little peach." The three made their way upstairs and towards Isabella's room. Isabella placed Ginger on her bed, before sitting beside her as Daryl sat at the bottom of the bed. "I have to tell you something, and it's really hard for mommy." Isabella started, looking down to her daughter. "I know you're going to be upset, and this might be hard for you to understand; but mommy can't lie to you okay?" Ginger nodded her head in understanding before Isabella took a deep breath. She locked eyes with Daryl before he nodded his head in encouragement.

"Uncle Ben, he uh, he isn't coming back sweetie." Isabella told her daughter. Ginger looked up to her mom in shock, her eyes wide as tears already started to swell up behind her eyes. "Why not?" Ginger asked, grabbing her mom's arm and shaking it slightly. "He got really sick, and mommy couldn't save him." Isabella told, her voice cracking. "But you can save anyone! Why couldn't you save him!" Ginger exclaimed, tears now falling from her eyes as she sat up on her knees.

Isabella sighed, and looked down to her hands. "He was too sick, sweetie. Mommy did her best." The woman lied. She couldn't tell her daughter what happened, she wouldn't understand what she was saying anyways. "Your mom did everything she could." Daryl finally said, making Ginger look at the man and fall into his arms. Daryl shifted the girl to sit in his lap, as he wrapped his arms around her as he wiped away her falling tears. "So he's never coming back for us?" Ginger asked softly, looking down at her hands as her tears slowly fell.

"Not this time sweetie."
