CHAPTER FOUR

Carls condition continued to worsen. He started to experience seizures and his body was slowly starting to shut down. Isabella was growing more and more concerned as time ticked by and there was no word of Shane and Otis. As she was walking to talk to Rick and Lori to tell them it was time for them to start the surgery without the proper equipment she heard Lori's hushed whispers.

"Maybe he shouldn't grow up in a world like this." She told her husband making the doctor almost gasp. If she was in their position, she would do anything in her power to make sure Ginger would make it out alive. "So we let him die? When we have a doctor ready and willing to save our sons life? A doctor so good we only could have dreamed of having her help our family before this." Rick shot back.

Finally, Isabella took a deep breath and pushed open the porch door pretending like she never heard the couple talking. "Are you two ready? We're going to have to do this without those supplies. We've run out of time." She told them making Rick nod his head and stand up, walking away from his wife and through the door Isabella had open for him. Almost on queue, the familiar blue pick up truck pulled up to the farm the headlights momentarily blinding Isabella.

She started to walk towards the truck as Rick walked back out of the house to greet his friend, her uncle following behind him. But Isabella stopped when only one truck door opened, and Shane was the one to walk out. "Where's Otis?" Hershel called too Shane as him and Rick started to grab the supplies from the bed of the truck.

"We got over run, he didn't make it." Shane replied, his voice wavering slightly, Isabella knew he was lying. Otis was smart, he knew how to get in and out of that place and he knew not to put himself in a position where he would have to leave Patricia alone in thus world. Yet, somehow he didn't make it back alive. "Alright, no one tell Patricia until we're done. We need her full undivided attention for this." Isabella said finally, clearing her throat and walking back into the house.

Shane and Rick brought the supplies into the bedroom and they were soon ordered by Isabella to help move him to the operation table. "You two, out. Go sit in the living room or something, just stay out of the way." Isabella ordered before pushing them out of the room and slamming the door shut. Her whole family was by her side that night as they worked to save the young boy from a horrible fate. Isabella called orders and asked for assistance when it was required, and several long hours later - she was finally stitching Carl's wound back up and wiping her face with a cloth.

Half way through the procedure, she had to get Maggie to take blood from her because Carl was losing blood too fast. Now the woman was light headed and feeling dizzy. Everyone carefully put Carl back on the bed and cleaned up the room before Isabella opened the door and three heads shot up. "He'll make it. He just needs some rest now." She told them before going up to her room to lay down for the night.

While laying on her bed, there was a small soft knock on the door before it was pushed open. Ginger stood in the doorway, holding onto her small teddy bear tightly. "Nightmare?" Isabella asked her daughter making the little girl nod her head. Isabella motioned for her daughter to join her in the bed. The woman kicked off her boots before tucking her daughter into the bed under the this covers and pushing her dark hair off her forehead. "Can you sing the song mommy?" Ginger asked quietly.

Isabella knew instantly what song her daughter was talking about. Isabella's mother used to sing her a Spanish lullaby that her own mother used to sing to her. Isabella spoke very little Spanish, hardly passing the class in high school. But she knew the words to the song, and she could say a few words and phrases. Isabella's mother was an immigrant that came into the US with her parents when she was 15, and met Isabella's father - Uncle Hershels brother when they were 18.

"Of course darling, are you ready?" Isabella asked, bringing the covers up to Gingers chin and tucking in her teddy bear too. Ginger nodded and Isabella started running her fingers through her daughters hair as she started singing softly. "A la nanita nana, nanita ella, nanita ella
Mi niña tiene sueño, bendito sea, bendito sea." She sang, watching as Gingers eyes grew heavy. The woman sang a few more lines before she knew Ginger was fully asleep once again.

Slowly, the woman untangled herself from her daughter and stood up from the bed, before leaving the room. She left the door opened a crack, letting lightly from the hallway enter the room incase Ginger woke up again. She walked down the hallway, and down the stairs before stepping into the living room and being greeted by two people she had never seen before.

"Isabella, this is Glenn and T-Dog, they're from Ricks group." Maggie said motioning to the two men making Isabella nod her head. "Nice to meet you, I'm Isabella." She replied before something caught her eye. "What happened to your arm?" She asked T-Dog. Abandoning all sense of personal space and grabbing his arm lightly making him wince. "It's infected," she told, lifting the gauze wrapped around his arm slightly making Glenn sigh.

"That's what we were thinking too." He muttered slightly. "Is there anything you can do to help?" He added in, Isabella inspected the wound before nodding her head. "Lucky for you two, I so happen to be a doctor." She replied with a chuckle before leading T-Dog into the kitchen so she can clean and patch up his wound.

The two talked quietly, telling each other about their lives before the apocalypse. Isabella also learning that they had a few more people on the highway that would be coming at some point tomorrow to join them. Once they were done cleaning and patching up T-Dog's arm, she led him to the living room and helped him get situated onto one of the couches he would be staying on for the night.

After she helped Glenn and T-Dog with extra blankets and pillows, she bid the two goodnight before making her way upstairs and to her room. She closed the door before turning on the lamp on the bedside table and getting changed into a pair of her old gym shorts and a large t-shirt. She made her way under the covers, kissed Ginger's forehead before turning the lamp off once more and settling down for the night.

She didn't awake until late the next morning, Ginger was gone - most likely to have breakfast with Beth and Maggie. Isabella made her way out of bed and gathered some clothes before walking to the bathroom down the hallway to have a shower. She made sure to keep her shower quick before getting changed, brushing her hair and putting on deodorant before going downstairs.

Beth was sitting downstairs at the kitchen table eating a plate of bacon and eggs. "Morning Beth, where's Ginger?" Isabella asked making Beth nod her head towards the front door before finishing what was in her mouth. "Outside talking to Glenn and Rick on the porch." She told making Isabella thank her before making her way outside.

Low and behold, Isabella found Ginger propped up on Glenns shoulders, his hat on her head hanging over her eyes as she played with his hair. "Well well, what do we have here missy?" Isabella asked jokingly with her hands on her hips. "Morning mommy!" Ginger greeted her mom with a smile. "We're waiting for Glenns friends to get here!" She informed her mother, wiggling around in excitement when she heard the rumble of a motorcycle pull up to the farm, with a large RV following behind it. The motorcycle was turned off and a man with a crossbow resting on his back stood up from it looking around the property. Ginger tried to make her way off of Glenns shoulders, making the man help her down.

Rick, Glenn and Isabella all watched as Ginger ran up to the man. "Who's that?" Isabella asked curiously making the two men share knowing smiles. "That's Daryl. He's kind of a hard ass." Glenn replied.

Ginger finally made it up to Daryl, motioning for him to come down to her height. The man bent down on one knee and looked shocked when the small girl held her hand out for him to shake, slowly, Daryl shook the small girls hand.

"He's oddly good with kids though." Rick added in as the three watched the sight before them.
