CHAPTER FIVE
From the moment Daryl showed up at the Green farm, Ginger had grown obsessed with the man. She would often follow him around, asking him questions about what he was doing and if she could help him. Although Isabella tried to keep her daughter away from the man so she wouldn't annoy him, she would always slip away to talk to the man anyways.
The group had been here for a few days now, going on searches to find a girl from their group named Sophia who had got separated from them on the highway. Isabella helped in anyway she could, but stayed around the house for the most part to keep an eye on Carl and how his wound was healing.
Much to her uncles dismay, Isabella was starting to form a friendship with everyone in the group. She loved Glenn, they would often go on walks together with Ginger propped up on the mans shoulders as they walked around the property talking. She would help the woman with their laundry and cooking and even helped Dale with his RV. She would listen to his stories about his life, and his family. The two got along great, but the one person she didn't get along with was Shane.
Shane would look at Isabella while she was helping around the camp, it never went further than that but it was enough to make Isabella stay far away from him.
The sun was shining bright above the farm today, Ginger had left the living room saying she was going to play outside making Isabella nod her head and shout after the girl to stay close to the house like always. Isabella herself decided it was too nice to not be outside, so she put on her boots and stepped outside, grabbing her cowboy hat on her way.
Standing outside on the front porch, Isabella saw Ginger standing on the bed of Otis's old truck so she was eye level with Daryl. The woman watched as the two talked, Daryl's shoulders moving slightly as Isabella could only assume he was laughing at something the young girl had said. Deciding she should actually talk to the man her daughter had so quickly befriended, Isabella made her way up to her daughter and the man.
On her way up to the two, Isabella heard Daryl say "I won't be around to talk today, I have to go out and look for a friend. I'm sure, when she comes back here the two of you will really like each other though." Ginger sighed and sat down on the bed of the truck dramatically with her arms crossed. "Well what the heck am I supposed to do all day then?" She asked sassily making Isabella sniffle a laugh and say.
"Hey, watch your mouth young lady." Both Daryl and Ginger looked up to the woman, Ginger standing up instantly and jumping off the bed of the truck and into her mothers arms. "Mommy, tell Daryl to stay here today so I can help him make more arrows!" Ginger exclaimed making Isabella laugh slightly.
"Why don't you go see what Glenn and Dale are doing, and you can see Daryl when he's back yeah?" Ginger sighed but nodded her head, bidding Daryl a goodbye and good luck today before running off to the RV and pulling on Glenn's pant leg. Isabella turned to Daryl and offered the man a soft smile. "Thank you for being so good with her." She said finally making Daryl nod his head.
"What? She got no dad or something?" Daryl asked, watching as the girl laughed as Glenn tickled her sides. Isabella sighed. "No, she doesn't. He was a dead beat that ran out as soon as he found out about her. I never heard from him after that." Isabella said as she watched her daughter interact with Glenn and Dale. "She's never really had men around besides my Uncle, so thank you again for being so patient with her." Isabella added in, looking up to the man who shrugged his shoulders.
"She uh, makes a good little helper. Smart kid too." Daryl said, before pulling out an arrow and showing it to her. Noticing quickly the sloppy handy work on the feathers, but at the bottom was engraved with G.S making Isabella smile. "I hope you were the one that carved that." The woman said making the man chuckle. "She helped." He confirmed with a tiny ghost of a smile.
Isabella sighed before turning away from the man, "You should head out while the suns still up, and before Ginger figures out you're still here." She said making the man nod his head and start to walk away. "Oh hey Daryl," Isabella said before the two were far apart. "Stay safe out there." She told him, making the man nod and continue walking away.
As the day went on, Isabella brought Ginger with her to check on Carl. She went through the normal questions of "How are you feeling today?" "Anything hurt?" "Let me know if this pinches." Before she left the two kids to talk to each other. The age difference between Ginger and Carl was roughly four or five years but neither of them seemed to mind. If anything, they hardly even noticed their age difference as they talked, coloured or even read books together.
It warmed Isabella's heart to see Ginger make a friend in a time like this, it made her feel like she could make a semi normal life for her daughter. Isabella now sat in the kitchen, sketching in her old sketch book from high school when she heard the door to the house open and footsteps approaching the kitchen. Looking up from the book in front of her, Isabella was met with the timid gaze of Carol.
"Hey Carol what's up?" She asked leaning back in her chair slightly. The woman held her hands in front of her keeping them folded, almost like she wasn't sure of what she was asking. "Lori told me to ask you if it's okay if we used the kitchen tonight to cook you and your family how much we appreciate you letting us stay here." Carol said quickly, Isabella nodded her head.
"I see no problem with it, it's all yours." Isabella replied before standing up, collecting her things and leaving the kitchen to go check on Ginger and Carl. Walking into the bedroom she saw the two fast asleep on the bed with crayons and colouring books littered across the bed. She smiled to herself before cleaning up the bed and throwing two different throw blankets over them tucking in the sides.
The echoing sound of a gun shot is what caught Isabellas attention. She threw whatever was in her hands onto the bedside table in the kids room and outside onto the porch to see Shane, Rick, Glenn and T-Dog all carrying what looked to be Daryl up to the house. "What the hell happened to him?" She asked as they brought him up the stairs of the porch. "Andrea thought he was a walker and shot him, it just grazed him but his side is bleeding too." Rick explained. Isabella sighed knowing they were running out of spare rooms to put injured people in. She sighed and ordered for them to take him up to her room so he could treat his wounds.
Rick and Shane brought the man into the room upstairs and placed him on the bend. Hershel bringing it a fresh bowl of water, disinfected and Isabella's stitching kit. Isabella told everyone to get out of the room, noticing how Shane's eyes lingered on her as they did making her shudder and roll her eyes slightly.
Daryl groaned from the bed before opening his eyes. Isabella sighed and sat on the bed beside him, soaking a cloth in the water bowl and rubbing it along his forehead. "Hey there." She hummed calmly bringing a sense of warmth to Daryl. "What happened to you out there guerrero?" She asked him making Daryl cock his head to the side like a lost dog before shaking his head at the foreign nickname.
"Got thrown off a horse and fell down a cliff and ended up with an arrow in my side." He summarized. She nodded her head and slowly reached and asked if it was okay if she could take off his shirt making him nod his head slowly. Once his shirt was off, she had to avoid looking at his chest and focused on the wound in his side, touching it lightly making him wince.
"Well, you're lucky it's a clean cut, it didn't it any arteries." She informed him, working to clean the cut out to make sure it didn't get infected. The two stayed silent as she worked, no one saying a word until a voice from the door gasped and said.
"Daryl? What happened to your back?"
