Cooking

Making a romantic dinner for their parents had seemed like a good idea at first.

Until both teens realized...

they had no idea how to cook.

Of course of course Hugh and Rosa's parents had been thrilled at the idea, assuming that their two sixteen year olds could handle themselves.

Boy were they wrong.

"Pasta would be easy enough, dontcha think Hugh?"

Hugh put down his cookbook and went to pick up Rosa's. "It's always harder than it looks Rosa..."

"It will be fine! You're such a worrywart! I have watched my mom make pasta plenty of times."

Hugh merely sighed and shrugged. "If you say so."

Rosa grinned and grabbed her purse, dragging Hugh out the door. "C'mon, lets go buy ingredients!"

The duo walked down to the local grocer and proceded to gather the necessary ingredients. That is, Hugh got the ingredients... while Rosa rode around on the cart like a scooter, giggling excitedly. The spiky haired boy was going to stop her, but couldn't bring himself to put an end to her fun.

"Just make sure you don't run into anything please," Hugh groaned as she skidded past. Rosa turned to reply and immediately ran into a stack of toilet paper.

"Why am I not surprised," the boy sighed, helping his friend up, as well as re-stacking the toilet paper."You are nothing but trouble."

Rosa merely grinned again and laughed sheepishly. After getting lectured about knocking over the toilet paper by the store's manager, Hugh and Rosa headed home, paper bags in hand.

"They are going to love it!" Rosa exclaimed, skipping down the sidewalk.

"If we don't manage to set the house on fire that is."

*******

Everything went pretty well... at first.

Hugh brought the water to a boil and began stirring in the noodles, leaving Rosa to make the pasta sauce. She, of course immediately got distracted and wandered over, sauce covered spoon in hand.

"Why is this taking so long?" Rosa questioned, waving the wooden spoon around lazily.

"It's been 10 minutes Rosa."

The brunette groaned, slumping against Hugh dramatically.

"Hey watch it!" He scolded, as he nearly bumped into the boiling pot.

"Cooking is hard," Rosa complained hanging her hands around her friend's neck. Hugh stumbled slightly and rolled his eyes, but bit back his lecture. He had known all along she would be like this. His best friend had the attention span of a goldfish.

"Hughhhh... Don't ignore meeee," she said, moving from side to side to try and catch the boy's eye.

"R-Rosa! Hey! C-careful!" Hugh exclaimed, losing his balance as the girl rocked back and forth. "Rosa I'm gonna fal-"

Both teens yelped as they tumbled backward. Hugh attempted to grab a hold of the countertop to steady them, but ended up catching the metal bowl of pasta sauce resting atop it. The bowl toppled onto the two friends, covering them in the red sauce.

Rosa groaned, trying to squirm out from under Hugh. He rubbed his elbow, which had hit the tile floor during the fall and winced.

Rosa finally wiggled free and sat on the floor, taking a look at the mess before her. "Hehe... Sorry..." she said sheepishly rubbing her neck.

Hugh's was facing away from her, silent. Was he mad? Would he yell at her. The fiery boy turned...

And laughed.

Rosa gaped. Hugh looking at the sauce covered floor and his sauce covered friend, and laughed until he had to hold his sides.

"Well that went well," he finally said, grinning.

Rosa sputtered for a moment, unsure what to say. "You mean... You're not mad?"

He flicked some sauce at her and she giggled. "I expected something like this to happen eventually. Like I said, you're nothing but trouble."

"Hey!" Rosa said, scooting over and wiping a handful of sauce on his face.

"Oh it's on." Hugh relatilated, grabbing the extra bag of noodles of the counter. Rosa squealed, as Hugh threw the strands of spaghetti at her. Which... started a free-for-all. Sauce and noodles flew through the air. Rosa's screams and Hugh's laughs could be heard as the war ensued. Rosa attempted to creep up on her friend who was grabbing more "ammo" but he caught her, pinning her down in the puddle of sauce.

"Looks like I won," Hugh smirked at the girl, who was now covered head to toe with marinara sauce and uncooked noodles.

"Looks like you did," Rosa said breathlessly, smiling up at him.

"What's my prize?" Hugh questioned, leaning in closer.

"Oh I don't know..." Rosa smirked up at Hugh, tilting her face towards his. Her bright blue eyes closed as their faces grew inches apart. Closer... Closer... And...

A shrill whistle pierced the air, causing both teens to jump in surprise. Hugh's hand slipped in the puddle of sauce and he fell, whacking his forehead against Rosa's.

"Owww..." the duo groaned, holding their throbbing heads.

"The water," Hugh finally said, wincing. Rosa looked up to see the burning water boiling over the sides of the metal pot.

"Crap," she said, scrambling for the stove. As the girl reached to turn of the burner, the water sizzled, several droplets landing on her hand. Rosa shrieked in pain and jolted away from the pot, slipping in the sauce pile behind her in the process.

Hugh managed to extend his arms and catch her in the nick of time. However, two friend's trouble was far from over, as footsteps could be heard coming down the stairs where the adults were chatting and waiting for the meal to be prepared.

"I heard somebody scream," a voice outside the door said.

"I hope everything's alright," added another. Moments later, the door burst open, revealing Hugh and Rosa's parents on the other side. All four adults stared in shock at the scene in front of them.

Their eyes scanned the room slowly, taking in the water-overflowing pot, broken pasta pieces, sauce covered floor, and two teenagers who looked like they had just rolled around in all of it. Rosa, who was still in Hugh's arms, waved sheepishly at her parents, then winced at the hand movement. Hugh merely sat there shell-shocked, unsure of what to do or say. Finally, he spoke up, clearing his throat to cut through the silence.

"Um... dinner may be a bit late."

******

Although no long-term punishments were dished out, Rosa and Hugh were required to clean up their mess. Hours later, they sat against the wall of the now clean kitchen, dining on a fine meal of PB&J sandwiches. They couldn't eat very much however, due to the fact that both would burst out laughing every so often, remembering the events of the day.

As Rosa smiled down at the heart shaped sandwich (hers and Hugh's attempt at saving the "romantic" dinner), and paused, glancing over at the blue haired boy.

"Hugh?"

"Hm?"

"You never did get your prize."

Hugh's ears turned red and he coughed, looking flustered. She smirked at his reaction. "I suppose I didn't," he replied, meeting Rosa's steady eyes. A long silence ensued.

"... Is it too late to cash in?"

The brunette thought for a moment, teasing him, then replied with "I don't believe so." Another silence. Then, the trainer turned towards Rosa, who seemed to be anxiously holding her breath. He found that her face was just as red as his.

He ignored his pounding heart and leaned toward the girl beside him. She smiled softly and closed her eyes.

Hugh gently pressed his lips to hers, claiming his reward. Rosa leaned into the kiss, her heart skipping about wildly. When they broke apart, the brunette smiled, looking into his intense red eyes.

"I'll be your loser any day."
