Chapter One
Piper
Piper's father looked at her with a cold look in his eyes. His hair was beginning to grey, and his dark eyes no longer reflected the warmth Piper once knew. His face, although still considered handsome by her "boy crazy" friends, was etched with wrinkles. Frown marks were engraved in his stone-cold face. He had his hands intertwined with hers, his calloused palms brushing against the tops of her hands. Piper resisted her urge to shiver as she forced herself to stare at her dad. Piper's eyes were stinging with unshed tears, her lips quivering as she tried to steady her rapid heartbeat.
"I need you to continue my legacy, Pipes." Her father said. His voice was raspy and his chin was riddled with stubble. Grey hairs poking from his chin and rising up his jaw, surrounding his mouth like silver duct tape. Piper exhaled shakily, looking away from her father.
"I'm no actress, Dad." Piper had told him. Choppy slivers of her hair moved to the sides of her face. The strands of hair brushed against her cheekbones and tickled her jawline. A feather connected to a thin sliver of her hair by thick, chunky violet and indigo beads had clinked together with a small hoop earring on Piper's left ear. Triston McLean, her father, sighed and removed one of his hands from hers.
"Pipes," He sighed as his hand rubbed his temples and palms glazed over his closed eyes. "I know that you don't like acting as much as you should, but you need to save this family legacy. If not for me, for your mother." Piper's lips perched together and she pulled her hands to her chest. Ripping herself from her father's grip without a thought as her mind went blank. Slowly, anger flooded her mind and she saw red.
"My mother?!" She scoffed, getting up from her seat. Her head spun as blood rushed from her head to her feet. Her cheeks turned red and she felt the tears she tried to blink back minutes earlier emerging and clouding her vision. Another small braid held together by chunky beads crashed into a hoop she had placed in her right ear. The neon green beads crashing against the bronze earring and swinging back into the nest of dark, uneven hair.
"Piper, think about-"
"You have no right to mention my mother! If you don't remember, Dad, she left me. Not you! You were the one she wanted to run with, not me! She wrote a note saying I should have been given away so you and she could be some power couple! She left me behind, I owe her nothing!" Piper screamed at him.
Her hands sprung into the air as her anger overflooded her petite body.
"I'll do it, but never for you, and especially never for my- my womb donor." She hissed, tears flowing down her cheeks in rage. Her father was silent.
A few minutes passed before Piper had stormed out, tears rolling down her cheeks like twin flowing rivers, and slammed the door. Her fists were clenched and Piper's tongue was pressed onto the roof of her mouth. She pulled out a pair of keys from her back pocket and unlocked her car.
Before her father had a chance to run after her, she drove off the property.
