Mark was born with a gift or maybe a curse; that's what it feels like in his eyes anyway. Upon everyone he meets he can sense how dangerous they are and mentally he rates them between one to ten - based upon how dangerous they are. If he feels the person he meets is above the fifth danger level he steers clear from them and it does effect how he sees everyone and he hates it, puts him off people whom deserve a chance but he cannot bring himself to give them it due to fear. Luckily, Mark has never met somebody above danger level six; His small group of friends are the least dangerous people Mark has ever met.
Yet, there's a new boy perhaps a transfer student; sat at his table next to Bob and Wade. They seem to be chatting up a storm and Mark approaches him with caution like he does with every new person and as he gets closer he stops in his tracks. There's an overwhelming feeling an almost redness to this boy with green hair; like hes a human stop sign and Bob whom knows of his 'gift' shoots him a look of worry across the table. Mark looks like hes seen a ghost.
The boy is a ten. He knows.
And suddenly hes running the other way; the breath knocked from his lungs and panic coursing through his veins. The toilet door slams behind him and he sinks down it, trying to compose himself. Mark hasn't ever met somebody that made him just stop and run; somebody with an overwhelming sense of danger. He thinks maybe hes wrong but has never been before.
The girl that was the six; she had lunged for Wade one time and got caught with a blade on her too.
The boy at the back of the class; he got in fights all the time and threatened Mark. He could predict it too; know which people had a short fuse and who didn't. It terrified him, made Mark wary of people and maybe he's developed anxiety due to it always wondering when others will snap.
And this boy; a ten! What was he capable of if he was a ten? How many people could he hurt?
It made him shiver at the thought.
;
Mark joins Bob at the bleachers; people practicing in the field and he needs to tell him. Marks leg is bouncing up and down;
"Mark, whats up man?" Bobs soft voice startles him and he shakes his head.
"Who was that boy you were sitting with yesterday?"
"His names Jack, hes from Ireland. Transferred here." Mark looks around as if people know he can tell they're dangerous or not. His tone dips to a whisper.
"Hes a ten." Bobs eyes widen as if he doesn't believe the raven haired man; but Mark can't explain why he thinks so, or why hes somewhat scared of the boy.
;
Nonetheless Mark observes; It's hard not too when the dangerous boy, Jack, is in some of his classes. In fact he nearly loses it when he taps him on the shoulder and asks for a pencil to borrow. He gives him it, afraid that if he doesn't he'll snap at him but he hasn't seen the boy be violent yet. Maybe hes wrong.
The boy meets him as hes leaving his class, Marks mind is in a tangle and the boy hands him his pencil back cheerly and Mark tries to stop the worry coating his face and give him his best fake smile. The boy notices, Mark can tell and he tries not to flinch when he walks away.
There's just something about him.
Hes dangerous. Mark can feel it.
;
Perhaps hes too quick to play hero when he sees the ten with a knife in his hands, wondering around the caferteria. He grabs his wrists, causing him to drop the knife. Mark breathes a sigh of relief but its short lived when he feels several pairs of eyes on him and a soft swear from the boy who's wrists hes still death-gripping. Eventually Mark drops his hands and the boy just stares at him but theres no fire in them; the panic of the situation sets in, words are failling him hes slack jawed and for the second time with this damned boy; he runs.
He barely hears Jack mumble; "I didn't know it was illegal to want to butter my own bread."
And it bothers Jack for the rest of the day how bad the boy with the raven haired reacted, how scared he looked of him. Had he heard the rumors? Read the paper?
;
Jack tries not to be the agressor but hes had it with this boy. He snaps when they're walking along in the hall and sees him picking up his pace. Jack almost runs after it and grabs him by the wrist and the boy jumps.
"What the fuck is your problem with me?" The Irishman tries to keep his tone low but it comes out as a shout. Mark takes a moment to respond and its a hushed whisper.
"You're dangerous." He mumbles as if he knows anything and everything about Jack when he hasnt' even had a proper conversation with him.
"You got some sixth sense or something?! I'm not dangerous."
That shuts the boy up who now proceeds to struggle.
"I have a gift, I know when people are dangerous; 1-10 - You're a ten." Its whisper-shouted and Jack lets the boy go.
Hes not a danger to others. Not anymore.
;
The raven haired boy knows nothing about Jacks past; only of how dangerous he was. Was being the key word - There is a reason he transferred to a different country, in the past Jack has been violent and would get into fights regularly which would often lead to blackouts and him having no memory past his anger. It lead him to seriously damaging others and even himself at points but Jack is learning to control it, learned to find himself and sometimes he still sees red or loses control but hes not as dangerous as he was, pains him that Marks sees him as just a number.
He'll show him.
Jack projects his anger into something else - playing the drums or running, anything to keep him for snapping. Nowadays when he lashes out he lashes out upon himself; Mark probably hadn't even considered that he could just be a danger to himself. Has a sick part of him that says he deserves the bruises he inflicts upon himself but Jack is learning that's not true.
;
He catches Mark again but this time in the toilets and he looks a little ruffled; Jack takes a deep breath and approaches him with caution - there's no anger upon in features nor the way he walks.
"I used to be dangerous -- However I'm more of a danger to myself than you or anyone else for that matter." Jack lifts his sleeve slightly and there's all but fading bruises and red marks; cruel reminders of how bad things can be.
Mark doesn't know where to look so he stares at the floor.
"I didn't know, Im sorry. This gift is a curse, makes me scared of people sometimes." He admits. Jack nods, and sighs.
"Fresh start?" It seems like thats all Jack seems to be doing right now, fresh starts but he wants Mark to give him a chance for whatever reason.
;
They're friends after that and although Jack can still tell Mark is wary of him, its better. Jack doesn't blame him and he knows its not just him, hes beginning to notice those he should steer clear off; Sees the way Mark changes when a person of danger is about because its the same way he acted around him at first. Jack feels apart of the group now but sometimes he'll catch Bob looking at him funny and he thinks that this is due to the fact that he knows;
And Marks seen him through some of his bad days - those days he feels himself slip, lose a bit of control. Mark keeps him in control - he distracts him with tales from his childhood or future things and its nice; Keeps Jack all there.
And Jack seen Marks bad days; Seen him try to shut him out and hes still persisted and listening to Mark mumble through tears.
;
But the thing with Jack is that once you're in his life its not meaningless - everything counts to him especially if you're Mark who sees through him, knows when he's upset. Maybe his gift adds to that Jack isn't sure. So when he finds out that some guy has been saying something to Mark he loses all of his control.
He lashes out at the boy; in the middle of the halls and he can hear a crack when he slams him against the locker and other than that, everything is white noise and he cannot see past anger.
What he does see in his fit of rage though is when Mark finds him; sees the hurt in his eyes and he hates it - its a look hes seen upon to many people's irises.
And he lashes out again but hes on his own this time and its just a mantra repeated over and over again.
Idiot, just like last time.
Just like last time.
;
Maybe its worst than he thought it was because hes some place else when he wakes up. He rises faster than he should and a hand is soon to stop him and before Jack gets to ask who; he hears a soft, deep baritone muttering the word 'easy' and he knows who.
"Mark." He turns to him and he really is happy to see him because good god he thought he'd messed all chances up royally but hes here and there's a sadness in his eyes this time.
"You lashed out pretty bad. Nurse said you sprained your wrist." Jack thinks it could be worse but doesn't say anything.
"I'm sorry." And he is, a bad part of him wants to run and transfer some place else again - back in his hometown he'd given nearly every kid in his year a beating and made friends with one but after hearing someone had hurt him he lashed out and his so called friend ran for the hills; and one kid he hospitalized and when he visited him then he saw the fear in his eyes; just like the first time Mark had met Jack, the same fear laced in his eyes; Now hes the one lying in a hospital bed. Mark is probably as scared of him as Jack is of himself. He knew then that he couldn't stick around needed a fresh start and he'd messed that up too.
"I could have hurt you." Jack mutters because he could have, his anger had been far too much.
"I know you wouldn't. You lashed out because of me and I know you care, I care about you too."
Jacks heart hurts.
"I hope I don't ever hurt you, you mean too much - I get so protective of people." Jack sighs.
Marks different though; Hes here and not running for the hills -- Isn't scared of him.
Mark runs his fingers across the back of Jacks knuckles and its all the forgiveness he needs.
He'll fight not people, not himself but he'll fight to learn from his mistakes and not hurt anyone again, not scare anyone.
And Mark will be there, fighting, too.
