(106) Memory

SargentPoofa challenged me to make them cry! So, I wrote this. Its angst, I'm sorry for this one

Thank you for almost 53,000 reads; that is absolutely incredible and I feel so blessed so what better way than to thank you all than giving you all feelings! (I'm so nice)

FEELS AHEAD.

He always had a good memory and it always surprised Jack. He remembered the smallest of details; how dark his coffee was that morning and how he spilled it on the pavement.

Or when on their first date Jack ordered sushi. It was the simple things and Jack loved Mark's memory. Jack remembered the bigger things, the promises they made; the dates of their anniversary. Marks favourite colors. They fit well together.

So when Mark started to forget things, it was hard and frustrating. He was a scientist, and kept forgetting how to do the formula's, Jack said it wasn't a big deal but Mark would throw the papers on his desk across the room, or scrunch them up and tug his hair. "I've been doing this for ten years! I haven't forgotten the formula since I learnt it, Jack." He sighed. Jacks eyes would soften and he'd insist on him taking a break, to step back which eventually he would and Jack would make him a hot beverage.

;

Jack, was an upcoming youtuber and decided a Q&A and it was going well, Jack knew the man next to him would probably win due to the fact Marks memory was ten times better than his, although they were neck and neck right now. Which, Jack was bragging about.

"So Mark, What food did I order on our first date?"

It was horrible watching the cocky smile fade from his face and his eyes turn sad, frantic as he seemed to be searching his brain for the answer that he normally knew. He looked panicked. Jack put a hand on his shoulder, "Mark, its okay."

It wasn't okay, why couldn't he remember? Their first date was blank to him but he always remembered it thoroughly. His palms were sweating, he felt dizzy.

Jack turned the camera off, hugging Mark; it was comforting, it always was.

"I'm sorry, I-I don#t remember." He uttered. Mark felt horrible, how could he forget something like that? So little yet so big to him.

It wasn't until they were sat at the round breakfast table with cups of coffee that he remembered.

"Sushi!" Jack jumped slightly, but smiled.

"Yeah, you're right!" He was still as happy that he remembered, as if it hadn't taken him two days too.

He started to forget.

It was slow, like a poison, the details he always remembered disappearing as if a small magician was in his head making the memories disappear like some trick or a robber, stealing what was most precious to him.

Jack was patient, telling him it was okay to forget sometimes.

Sometimes. It wasn't just sometimes. It frustrated him beyond what he could put into words, he was constantly searching for something. He lost his job too they told him he was becoming 'careless' and 'dangerous' but he was just forgetting things, and it crushed him.

FLASHBACK;

Wedding day; June 19th 20XX

Jack fixed his bright green bow tie, just to give his fingers something to mess with; a nervous thing of his. He was standing across from the priest, constantly checking the time. The priest gave him an assuring smile as if to say 'He'll show up'. Then the doors open and the music started playing and in came his angel, bright bow tie visible, a contrast to his suit in the distance. All the nerves gone as he came closer he looked like an angel with the summer sunshine beaming behind him. When he faced him; he saw those chocolate eyes starring at him; he knew this look because he mimicked it. As nibble fingers placed the ring upon his finger he looked up as the man of his dreams read his vows.

"I love you more than you love snowy places and big creatures. I love you more than you'll ever know; Even as we grow old and my memory begins to go, Ill never forget you, how you smiled when I asked you out the first time; How you cried and I wiped your tears. I may forget everything; but I will not forget you."

Slowly yet all at once he lost things; His job. His memory. His wonderful outlook he once had on life; he was losing. One thing he never, ever lost though was Jack. By his side reminding him of what once was, what he had lost. It was devastating and comforting all wrapped up in one.

But there came the day when those oceans trapped in Jacks eyes did not look so familiar anymore. They looked unknown; like Mark didn't know who the person was standing in front of him and Jack could see it, the confusion like he'd just bumped into him on the street and they had been talking but Mark couldn't figure out who he was.

"Mark?" He just titled his head like a confused puppy and Jack wanted to cry.

"Its me Mark, come on. Its Jack." His voice was so pleading, Mark knew it. He knew he must know this man somehow and he was searching again; Like somebody lost in darkness searching for a light.

'I will never forget you.' The words seemed to taunt the Irishman now Mark had been dealt with a horrible hand.

"I'm sorry, I-" Don't say it, say you remember me instead. Lie to me. Jack thought, head spinning this couldn't be happening.

"I don't remember you." It came out like a whisper but stuck in Jacks veins like poison and he felt it slowing effecting him as each moment passed. Like Mark had his heart in his hands and crushed it between them.

Mark forgot himself and Jack, too. Like Jack was some memory and not here in the flesh. Like he hadn't been here it months, years. Maybe he hadn't been in Marks mind; it made his soul hurt.

;

But there were days were he didn't recognize Jack and there were days in which he did but taking care of him had taken its toll; and he had to get nurses involved and it was hard having to leave the love of your life everyday knowing that when you comeback in the morning they may not remember you but Jack did always return, just like the sun always rose in the morning.

But things had gotten worse and Mark was dying just like his memory and soon, Jack had nothing to return to but a headstone above the ground with flowers in hand and tears dripping down his cheek.

He was the one that would never forget Mark, even if Mark had forgotten him.

'I will never forget you.' Perhaps he should've said that instead.
