seventeen; sister

"This is absolute bullshit."

"Hey now, no swearing."

"Oh, fuck off."

Scott may have been used to swearing, but hearing his younger sister do it was a completely different thing to him. He turned in the driver's seat of his car the best he could to stare at the blonde-haired girl.

"Kirstin!" She looked to him with an eyebrow raised. "When'd you start cussing so much?"

"Ever since you left for college."

"I've been gone a month."

"Whatever." Scott rolled his eyes at the girl. "And as a matter of fact, I've always sworn. Just hid it from you to play up the whole innocent little sister thing."

"You're only a year younger. I don't know if that applies to you."

"You've always loved having a sister."

"Always?" Scott asked. Kirstin glared at him for a moment before she reached for the car door.

"Come on. Doors just opened," she said as she slid out of the car then slammed the door shut. Scott shook his head briefly before getting out of the car as well. He half jogged to catch up to Kirstin, but when he did, he brought their conversation back to the original topic.

"Now, what's absolute bullshit?" Scott asked as they headed towards the school.

"That you have to crash my homecoming."

"I'm not crashing it," Scott defended.

"Whatever helps you sleep at night."

"You agreed to let me come though."

"I was kinda forced to."

"But were you?" Kirstin shot him yet another look -- Scott was going to have to keep track of how many times she did that tonight -- before picking up her pace. Scott sighed and once again jogged to catch up to her. By the time he did, the doors to the school were in sight and he could also faintly hear the music already going.

"Okay, why are you so mad at me?"

Kirstin simply rolled her eyes, then walked through the open doorway. Scott was quick to follow her into the school and towards the people who were checking IDs. Once the duo was past them, Scott might've tried to question her again if it weren't for the fact that they almost immediately ran into Kirstin's friends at the edge of the crowd. However, even though there were plenty of people there, they both noticed that one person was still missing. Unfortunately for Scott, when he did arrive, he spotted Kirstin first.

"Kirst!" Mitch called out as he headed over to the group. The two quickly hugged before pulling back to judge the others outfit. "You look gorgeous!"

"It's honestly nothing. Where's your dress?"

"I chickened out," Mitch admitted. "Wearing a dress just sounded scary."

"I think you should've," Scott said once he noticed Mitch and went to his sister's side. Mitch's eyes darted to Scott and widened. "You would've looked amazing."

"Scott!" Within a second or two, Mitch threw himself into Scott's arms.

"Hey, baby." Scott wrapped his arms around Mitch's waist and squeezed him as tightly as he could. The two boys had huge grins on their faces, the smiles perhaps being the biggest they had been since they last saw each other. And even though he was now completely focused on Mitch, he could've sworn he heard an 'and that's why' from Kirstin.
