16: Dunkin Donuts

The week passed by faster than I would've liked it to, and the next thing I knew I was back home. I was tangled back into the busy routine I was used to.

I knocked softly on the door of the patient I was needing to check on. Then I opened the door. Still unconscious from the surgery. I listened to the heart monitor, something felt wrong, but I didn't have time to make my thoughts coherent.

"Espinoza, we need you." Thomas said, as he rushed past me. I wasted no time and followed him, while I informed the others stationed near me to cover for me. It wasn't a new occurrence by now they had to be used to it almost every time there was a major thing I was called.

He filled me in while we rushed to the room. I wasted no time getting everything ready to ensure things would work out fine.

My shift ended after twelve hours, and I was ready to sleep. As soon as I took a quick shower and got into sweatpants and a shirt I laid in bed. But it took longer for me to get some rest. I stared at my ceiling waiting for my heavy eyes to finally embrace sleep.

The sun's rays shone directly on my face that morning. I turned over refusing to get up. With the pillow now over my face, I tried to get back to sleep for at least another hour.

The knock on my door ruined those plans. My mind waged a war on whether I should get up and open it or no but the part of my that said I should win out. Dragging my feet out of bed, I headed to the kitchen first to get some water. After drinking some I answered the door.

Of course it was.

"You don't even wake up at this time." I groaned.

"Damn, someone's angry." Came his reply. "And I thought your whole life revolved around getting the worm or something."

"I'm not angry, I'm tired." I replied.

"Well I guess I'll have to mark that theory out."

I didn't bother asking him what he meant. "What do you need? Or are you just wanting my tv?"

It was the latter so I let him in on the condition that he'd let me sleep.

He kept his word and didn't make a noise as I tried to catch up on sleep. A few hours later, I got up although my eyes showed I didn't want to.

I closed the door to my bedroom, and walked to the living room. "And the question remains: why don't you just buy yourself a better tv?"

"Cause why spend money on it when I can just come over?"

I opened my mouth to reply but decided against it. There was no arguing at this point.

I walked into the kitchen to make a pot of coffee. The walls were light blue still, the cabinets were light brown. The top left cabinet had all the coffee stuff. When it was done I made myself a cup and Dylan did the same.

"Seriously how do you make the coffee taste good. If I try, I end up at dunkin donuts."

"So that's where your tv money goes." I said, before taking a drink.

"I have the money, yours is just cooler."

"It's a normal tv."

"Maybe but have you seen the size of all the other tvs, they're too big. I don't think they'd fit in my living room."

"Okay, that makes more sense."

"What time do you have to go in today?" He asked, changing the subject.

"Three," I replied.

"Not bad, I still have no idea how you manage."

"Some days neither do I." I paused. "So how's the job working out for you?"

"I actually like it so that's an improvement. Plus they let me take that vacay so not complaining."

I left thirty minutes before I had to be there and it was about a ten minute drive most days. The shift ended before I knew it, or in other words one a.m.

Once I got home, my phone rang. I looked at the screen. Tatiana.

"Hello?" I asked.

There was nothing on the other line. "Tatiana, is everything okay?"

Footsteps came closer. "I'm so sorry I didn't realize I called you. Emily usually calls me at this time and I thought I called her. I was getting something waiting for her to answer."

"Oh, okay. Well I'll let you do that then."

"Sorry again." She said. "Actually. One thing, if you wanted maybe we could have breakfast together. My house. I was planning on making cinnamon rolls and I remember you saying you liked those."

"Sounds like a plan. Just send me a message in the morning." I replied.

"Okay, bye." She said, and then hung up.

Eee this took forever and it's so much shorter than I wanted. But the next chapter is already mostly done so that's cool.
