Chapter 30

Music blares through the court yard as people dance around the fire in beautiful swirls. The women's dresses twirl around them as they sway with their male partners. The music is cheery and so are all the smiles on everyone's face.

Then there is our group. We are sitting at our table and watching all the pack members dancing around and having fun. As beautiful colors mix around in front of us I let out a sigh. I really want to dance.

Wesley stands from the table and walks up to me. "My lady would you care to join me?" he asks with a playful smile. I laugh and stand.

I say, "I would love too." I wrap my arm around his as he escorts me to the dance floor.

I laugh as he twirls me in front of him. He bows down and I curtsy. He places my free hand on his shoulder and the other hand in his own. He gently guides me by placing his free hand on my hip. I laugh as we sway through the crowd.

"This is so much fun." I exclaim. He laughs.

"Oh, I know. We hold dances and balls like this all the time. They don't do this in America?" he asks. I laugh and shake my head.

"Nope. This is a girl's dream in America."

I look around at the people dancing beside us. Then I catch a glimpse of a familiar sparkly pink dress flowing through the crowd and a familiar green one. I take a closer look and see Marla and Stacey dancing with partners. Looks like Stacey is dancing with Leonardo and Marla is dancing with Gavin. I feel a growl rumble in my chest.

No I can't do that. Marla likes Gavin. I need to stop. Plus I will find my mate eventually and any feelings I might have for Gavin will vanish.

The song slowly comes to an end and Wesley turns to his left. I follow his eyes and see Kenneth has tapped on his shoulder.

"Can't hog the beautiful lady all night. Mind if I step in?" He asks Wesley.

Wesley shrugs, "Sure thing, I was getting tired anyway." He releases me. "I had fun." he says.

I laugh. "Me too." With that he is gone.

Kenneth grabs my hand and pulls me toward him. He puts my hand on his shoulder and put his hand on my hip. We start to sway to the new song that comes on.

"You look beautiful tonight Evelyn." He says and gazes into my eyes with his bright green ones.

I feel my face heat up. "Oh... Thank you." I say.

He twirls me around and I laugh. I never knew dancing could be so fun. We dance like this until the music comes to an end and the fire is practically dead.

The group gathers at the table and we decide it is best to get back to the mansion. We grab our stuff and wonder back through the booth area and walkway. We start to pass by the familiar settings of the festival and I feel almost sad that the night has slipped away so quickly. We finally reach the area near the lanterns.

I look out at the water one last time and see kids standing and holding lanterns. A few of them lift the lanterns up high and let them go. They gracefully rise and float away into the dark night sky. More people follow suit and soon there is a river of light in front of me. It's so beautiful.

We hop on the carriage and start our trek home. I look back and watch as the light grows more and more dim the further we go. It saddens me, but at least it was a fun night.

The carriage pulls into the mansion's extravagant driveway. Everyone starts to get out. Once I've exited, I turn around and wait for Marla and Stacey. Gavin comes out after me. He gets down the stairs and Marla appears behind him.

"Oh Gavin." She says lightly. He turns around and she looks down at the stairs. "A little help?" she asks sweetly.

He reaches his hand out and she gladly take it. He helps her down the stairs. She holds onto his hand and pulls him forward a little more.

"Thanks for tonight. It was fun." She says with a smile. She blinks twice slowly then reaches up and embraces him in a hug.

I roll my eyes and turn toward the carriage as Stacey comes out. She gives me a happy smile.

"Thank you Evelyn." She says.

"What for?" I ask.

"You made this night possible. If it weren't for you then Marla wouldn't be this happy. Thank you. It means a lot." She says.

"Oh it was no problem. I didn't do much." I say with a shrug. She laughs.

"If you say so." She looks toward the mansion. "Come on let's get you back to your room and ready for bed. It looks like Marla already went up to bed."

I glance over to my left and find that Stacey is right. Marla isn't there anymore. I feel like it is unusual for her to be dismissive like this.

Stacey starts to head into the building so I follow her back to my room. When we reach it, she gets me into a purple night dress. Then I dismiss her and send her to bed. It has been a long day for all of us. We need our rest.

I walk to the bathroom and go through my normal routine. I brush my teeth, my hair and wash my face. I pause and look in the mirror. My eyes look electric blue at the moment and my hair falls in messy waves around my face. Yet something seems off. I look... sad?

Oh well. I push off the counter and go back into my room. I'm about to shut off my light when I notice someone sitting on my bed. I let out a surprised squeal.

"Evelyn it's me, be quiet." He says. I let out a sigh and approach the bed.

"Jesus Gavin you scared the crap out of me." I place my hand on my heart. Then I look up into his grey eyes. "What are you doing in here?" I ask.

He stands up from the bed and walks over to my balcony door. "Come here." he says.

I follow him to the door and he opens it wide. He leads me out to the balcony and stands by the fencing that lines it. I walk up next to him and look out into the distance. I see a line of light in the sky. That must be the lanterns! They are just as beautiful and captivating from a distance.

"That's so beautiful." I say.

"Here." he says. I turn to him and see that he is holding an unlit lantern in his hands.

He pushes it toward me and I take it from him. He got me a lantern? That's so sweet. He pulls out a match and lights it. He lights up the candle inside the lantern and I look at him. My heart is swelling with joy.

"Thank you so much Gavin." I say with a happy smile.

"Its no problem, I saw you looking at them earlier. So when I saw kids selling them at a booth I decided to buy you one. I figured you would want to send one off considering you have never been to this festival before." I turn toward the lit up sky.

"So I just let it go?" I ask happily. He snickers at that.

"Yes Evie." My smile brightens at the familiar nickname.

I lift the lantern up and slowly let go. It ascends in the air and floats into the dark sky. It is headed in the direction of the lantern river that was created from the festival. I hope it reaches there eventually, then it's as if I released the lantern at the festival. That would have been awesome, but I guess my lantern is cute all by itself. It's special.

I turn around and smile at Gavin. "Thank you." Then I remember Marla, she was looking at the lanterns earlier too. "Did you get one for Marla too?" I ask and start to head back to my room.

Gavin follows behind me. "No." He says with a hint of anger.

We make it into my room and Gavin shuts the door behind us. I walk up to the light and turn it off. The moonlight shines in through the balcony doors making things slightly visible.

"Oh. I only assumed because you guys were-"

"You shouldn't assume things Evelyn." He says in a sour tone as he cuts me off. I frown and turn to him.

"So I shouldn't assume anything even though you were acting all lovey-dovey toward one another?" I say back in an aggravated tone.

"We weren't acting lovey-dovey." He says and takes a step toward me. I roll my eyes.

"Sure you weren't. You were dancing, holding hands, embracing. Anyone who didn't know you would certainly think you guys were a couple." He lets out an angered breath and frowns.

"Act like you care anyway." He says. I huff.

"I don't."

"Exactly." He says and looks away from me. "Whatever. I don't think Jason would be to pleased to see you dancing with two guys tonight." I roll my eyes.

"Jason doesn't have a right to be mad at that. He isn't my boyfriend." I say angrily. I hear a snicker come from Gavin.

"Yeah, okay. Maybe you should tell that to Jason because he practically announced that you guys are dating in front of the whole pack." My eyes go wide.

"What?" I ask. Gavin raises an eyebrow.

"Yup, when he found out you were gone he started shouting orders at people. Bryce set him straight and he apologized. Apparently he was so aggravated because you guys are dating."

"Whatever Gavin." I say and roll my eyes. "We aren't dating. That still doesn't change the fact that your dating my maid." I say. He shoot me a dirty look and walks right up to me.

"I told you we aren't a thing." He says as he looks down at me. I stare up at him and raise an eyebrow.

"Oh yeah?" I ask.

"Yeah." He says.

"Prove it."

He leans down and presses his lips against mine. I feel tiny tingles spread into my body and after a moment I kiss him back. I reach up and grab his face in my hands. He grabs my hips and pulls me up. I wrap my legs around his waist and deepen the kiss.

Gavin slips his tongue into my mouth and I moan as he adventures. The next thing I feel is the soft comforter on my back. Gavin never breaks the kiss and he continues to explore my mouth. I move my hands down to his shirt and lightly trace his abs. He lets out a small moan and kisses me harder if that's even possible.

He brings one of his hands up toward my stomach. The thin material of my nightgown rides up and his skin is against mine. His thumb brushes the rim of my bra and my body gets a chill of excitement.

Then he breaks the kiss. I let out a few heavy breaths then look up into Gavin's eyes. He sighs.

"Evelyn I can't." he says.

"What do you mean?" I ask softly.

"I don't know if I can control myself around you." He says and looks away from me. I feel a blush creep onto my face.

"Oh." I say. I feel sadness rise up in my chest as Gavin lets go of me and stands. I wasn't done kissing him...

"I should go."

I shoot my hand out and grab his wrist. "Can't you just stay with me again tonight...?" I ask shyly.

He looks into my pleading eyes and I hear him sigh. He walks around to the other side of the bed and gets in. I smile and get into the covers as well. Only it doesn't feel right. I really want to cuddle. I slowly inch forward and curl into his chest. Gavin freezes for a moment then slowly he wraps his arm around me. I smile and close my eyes.
