Chapter 29
"It's them!"
"Look mom the savior is here!"
"She's beautiful!"
"They can't help us at all."
"Go back to the Mist Pack."
I feel my face heat up and I keep my head down. All of the members in this pack sure are opinionated. They also don't know how to keep their mouths shut. Ever since we got here and left the carriage people have been looking at me none stop and talking. At first I was embarrassed, but now I'm getting kind of angry. I'm just a normal kid. Why can't they let me enjoy this festival in peace?
"Look Evelyn, the lanterns!" Marla says from behind me.
I turn to my right and see a bunch of lanterns lined up along a river. They are all lit and appear to be hanging on strings. People are crowded around them and are taking pictures. They look so pretty. Maybe they will walk me over there so I can see it up close.
As we come to a fork in our path, I'm about to bank right to head toward the lanterns but Kenneth bears left. The rest of the group follows him so I sigh and go with the group. Damn, I really wanted to see them up close.
We pass by a bunch of little booths. Most of them are being run by kids. The little entrepreneurs are selling cute little crafts and handmade jewelry.
I notice that all the little girls are dressed up like butterflies and the women are dressed like me. The boys are in cute Peter Pan looking costumes and the men are dressed like Gavin and the others. I'm actually glad I listened to Stacey's fashion advice and kept the dress on. I would feel so outcasted without it.
Eventually we make it to a large open court yard. There is a blazing fire in the middle and a few people are dancing to music. There are tables and chairs cluttering the area around the dance floor. Kenneth leads us under a small balcony where there is a table and chairs set up.
Kenneth turns to us. "This is where we will be meeting at the end of the night. So please be careful. The dancing should start around 9, don't forget that either." He claps his hands together and smiles. "Okay, group dismissed."
Wesley lets out a little cheer and runs away. Leonardo rolls his eyes at him but follows his steps anyway. Marla drags Stacey away and soon I'm left alone with Gavin and Kenneth.
"Shall we go to the haunted house?" Kenneth asks me. I turn to him with fear in my eyes.
"Um... I suppose so..." I say nervously. I look at Gavin. "Gavin, do you want to come with us?" I ask.
He shrugs. "I don't know, Haunted Houses aren't really my thing."
Kenneth laughs. "Yeah they aren't his thing, he should be fine here." Kenneth adds.
Gavin turns to Kenneth and raises an eyebrow. "On second thought, the haunted house sounds like a great idea."
I smile and say, "Awesome! Lead the way you guys." Kenneth frowns at Gavin but quickly switches it to a smile.
"It's this way." Kenneth says.
He brings us out from under the balcony and through the dance floor. We pass through what looks to be a grave yard. I'm pretty sure it's real because I am extremely creeped out at the moment. What if there are real spirits lurking?
We finally reach a creepy shack. The sign above reads, 'Haunted House'. How original.
People are lined up for quite a distance. The line curves around and into a street that is near the shack. Hope creeps into me, maybe Kenneth will want to leave because the line is so big, but he doesn't stop his progress toward the shack. I suppose we are going to have to wait in that giant line then. Oh well, I have seen bigger ones. I start to walk to the back of the line when Kenneth catches my wrist.
"Where are you going?" he asks. I look up at him with questioning eyes. I turn back to the line then look up at him again.
"The back of the line?" I state as a question. He laughs and shakes his head.
"Oh that's nonsense. We don't have to wait in the line."
"We don't?"
"No, we get special privileges." He says and I pause for a moment.
"Why is that?"
"Well, simply because of our powers." He says with a shrug. He tugs me toward the shack. A few people glare at us as we walk past them. Honestly I would too, we are cutting them and they have been in line for a long while now.
After passing by all the waiting guests, we get to the front desk. A man in a goblin costume is sitting behind the desk. He smiles creepily at us. Wow, he did a good job, his costume looks real and very creepy.
"Welcome Kenneth, Gavin and Evelyn. We have been expecting you." He says. He motions toward the black doorway to his right.
Kenneth nods at him politely. Then he steps through the doorway. I look back at Gavin worriedly. He ignores my stares and just walks past me and into the dark path awaiting us.
The goblin turns to me with his creepy smile. I stare at him for a moment then turn back to the black abyss. So many feelings in my stomach are telling me not to go. Why did they leave me alone with this creep!
I scurry in through the door quickly so I'm not left behind. I've always been creeped out from thunder, lighting and ghosts. So now isn't a good time to be left alone in a creepy haunted house.
"Gavin? Kenneth?" I whisper loudly. No answer.
I step forward into the unknown. All I can see is black. This is terrible. A creaking noise sounds to my right and I jump to my left. What was that?
I feel something brush against my leg. I let out a squeal. I run forward a little bit and start walking again. I suck in a few deep breathes and slowly let them out. The chills in my body start to die down a little.
It's okay Evelyn, it's only a haunted house. Nothing can harm you. There aren't any real spirits in here. It's all pretend. I chant to myself to calm my fears.
Something shoots out and touches my shoulder. I let out a small cry and kneel to the ground. I close my eyes. Why can't I just be somewhere else. I just wanted to see the stupid lanterns.
Something grabs both my arms and pulls my up. My heart rate quickens and my eyes shoot open. I can only see darkness so the thing holding me is not visible.
I struggle to get out of it's grip but it holds on tighter.
"Let go of me!" I say and pull to get away. I hear a sigh.
"Evelyn, it's me." A deep familiar voice says. Just like that I relax.
"Gavin?" I ask shaken.
"In the flesh." He says. I reach forward and hug him. He freezes for a moment, then lightly he places his arms on my back and pulls me in to a deeper hug.
"You scared me." I pull back from the hug and gently slap him on the chest. "Don't ever do that again!" I say.
A deep rumble rings through his chest as he laughs. I smile. That never gets old. It's so unusual for him to actually laugh.
He slides his hands off from around me. "Come on, let's get out of here." he says. He walks away from me and I quickly follow behind him.
A piercing scream sounds from behind us and I reach out and grab Gavin's arm.
"Lets hurry up... Where's the exit?" I ask worriedly.
"I don't know. It has to be around here somewhere. This is weird though, we have been walking around in the dark for a while now. Don't they usually have some form of light?" He says.
Just then a bloody witch head pops out of a window with a bright red light shining behind it. I scream, close my eyes, and squeeze Gavin's arm tighter.
"Scaredy Cat." He says. I open my eyes and see that it is merely a plastic head. I sigh. To the left of the head is a doorway with a red light shining through it's cracks.
He reaches out and opens it. When we enter, the room is filled with odd things. There is a bloodied table with a severed limb. There are knives, cutting tools and other creepy utensils laying around. On the other end of the room is a doorway with a black drape hanging down over it.
Just then a familiar pain surges through my mind. I grab my head and drop to the floor with a small cry. When I open my eyes and look up I'm no longer in the red room. I'm in an alley, but I'm not alone.
There are four figures in the dark corner of the alley. I walk closer. The figures become visible and I see a sparkling pink dress. Is that Marla? Why is she standing in front of a little boy? She is also holding a little grocery bag. There are two men standing in front of her. The bigger man has Marla's arm in his hand and the other is staring at the boy.
The smaller man whispers something to the big guy and he tosses Marla to the floor. The smaller one approaches the boy and reaches for him. Marla jumps up and runs toward the boy. She stands in front of him protectively. The smaller of the two men smirks and pulls out a small dagger.
"Marla get out of there!" I yell. Unfortunately like all my visions I'm not seen nor heard. Everything gets blurry and a flash of red crosses my eyes.
I blink a few times and notice I'm back in the red creepy room. Gavin is looking down at me. I must be lying on the floor. I slowly lean up and grab my throbbing head. Then it hits me.
"Gavin we have to get out of here now." I say. He looks at me confused.
"It's just a haunted house Evelyn. Nothing is going to hurt you." He says. Then he adds, "Are you okay? What just happened."
"I saw Marla and this boy in an alley. Some guy had a knife pointed at her. Gavin please we have to go help her." I say. I feel tears beginning to form.
Gavin reaches out and scoops me up. Before I can even prepare myself for it a quick feeling of weightlessness passes through me then we are outside. Gavin puts me down.
I look around frantically. There aren't any ally ways around here. Where is she? I feel a gentle tug on my arm. I turn and see Gavin looking at the pathway that leads to the booths and the craft tables. I look closer and see little openings that appear to be alley ways behind some of the booths. Perfect.
I race over to the booth area. Once i get there I immediately slow down and walk behind one of the booths. She has to be around here somewhere. I glance down the dark alleyway. Here goes nothing.
I go as far as I can before I come to a stop, my path breaks off into two paths. I can either go left or right... Which way is the right way?
I'm going to go left. I turn and run down the dark alley. She has to be here somewhere, I just hope I'm not too late.
I can barley see, but my eyes are dilated enough that I can just barley make out the path in front of me. But when I get the the end of the pathway, there is nothing in front of me but a brick wall. This can't be right.
A piercing scream sounds from behind me and fear washes over my body. I went the wrong way. I turn and run as fast as I can. I pass by the alley I took the wrong turn at and go the way I should have in the first place. I finally reach an area that looks very familiar. I take a closer look and see three figures standing. Wait three?
I run up to them and see too large heaps on the ground. As I take a closer look I notice the two heaps are men! Their faces are the same as the two men in my vision. If they are knocked out on the ground then what happened?
I look up and see the little boy leaning against the wall horrified. At the same time Marla is wrapped up in someone's arms. Someone saved her and got here before me?
I take a step closer to get through the dark haze of the ally. Then the face of her savior becomes visible. It's Gavin. Marla is crying into his chest and he's holding her.
Something pulses through me just then. Anger. Yes thats it, slight anger but I ignore it. She must be devastated, how can I be angry when she was just in a serious situation.
I quickly turn to the boy and walk up to him. He looks at me and backs up toward the wall even more. I bend down and give him a sympathetic look.
"Don't worry. I'm here to help you." I say quietly.
I stretch my hand out toward him. He blinks a few times then slowly grabs my hand. Then he runs up and hugs me. I embrace him in the hug. I can feel his shaking body. The poor boy.
"What's your name?" I ask.
"Henry... Henry Toile." He says.
"Well Henry, I think we should get you back to your parents. What do you think?" I feel him nod. He slowly releases me from his embrace and wipes his eyes. He can't be more than six.
I stand up but keep one of his hand in mine. I turn to Marla and Gavin. She is still crying in his arms.
"I think we should go now." I say to them.
I hear Marla sniffle. She detaches herself from Gavin and he lets go of her. She nods her head as she wipes away the tears in her eyes.
I lead them out of the alley and back to the booth area. People are walking around and laughing as if that whole situation didn't just happen. I mean it's not like they knew what just occurred or anything but it amazes what can go on without people knowing.
I feel a little tug on my hand and Henry points toward a booth with a man sitting at it. He looks tired and is fiddling with one of the hand crafted bracelets on the table.
"That's my dad." he says.
We start to walk over to the table when I hear a disheveled screech. I look to my left and see a plump woman running at us full speed.
"My boy!" she shouts. Henry lets go of my hand and embraces the woman who I presume is his mother. "Henry I was so worried. You just disappeared! I didn't know where you went."
"I'm sorry mommy. I won't do it again..." He says. She slowly releases him from a hug and looks at me. Henry adds, "She helped me mommy. There were bad guys and knives but I'm okay now." He adds.
The woman's eyes go wide. She glances over at me and her expression changes from thankful to scared. "The savior." she says quietly. She slowly goes down on one knee. "Thank you so much for your help." she says.
"Oh! Please stand, I don't want your dress to get dirty." I say and help her stand up. "I didn't really do much, it was more of my friends over there." I say and point to Gavin and Marla. "I'm just glad they are all alright."
"Me too." The woman says and looks at her son lovingly. "Thank you, but what really happened out there?" She asks worriedly.
I let out a sigh, "To be completely honest, I'm not sure. I just know they are safe and thats what matters for now."
She puts on a worried face but nods in agreement. It must be hard for her not to know what happened, but since I wasn't there I don't even know what happened. I can't help her.
"Well thank you again..." She says. I nod politely and turn toward Marla.
Okay, time to figure out what really happened so I'm not completely clueless. When I get over to her I reach out and touch her arm lightly.
"Are you okay? What happened?" I ask. She sighs and shakes her head.
"I heard the boy yell and I went to see what happened and those men were after him. I tried to stop them... I did..." She says lightly.
"It's okay Marla. You're safe now." I say gently. She blinks a few times to hold back the tears forming in her eyes, then she smiles.
"Yeah, thanks to Gavin." She turns and gazes at him with a certain gleam in her eye that makes me upset. He's standing at a booth right now looking at the crafts one of the kids made.
"Yeah, it's a good thing he was there you could have been hurt." I say with slight worry in my tone.
"Uhuh." She mutters as she stares at Gavin dreamily.
"Um Marla?" I say and wave my hand in front if her face. She's like a love struck puppy. What's going on? "Snap out of it!" I shout.
She looks at me quickly and blushes. "Sorry Evelyn." she turns back to Gavin. "He's like my Prince Charming." She says dreamily. Then she looks at me with wide eyes. "Oh! I forgot he was one of your candidates. I'm sorry do you like him like that?" She asks worriedly.
"Me, like Gavin?" I laugh a little. "No way..." She looks at him and smiles.
"Oh good." She says, "He's perfect for me. He's meant to be my prince charming." I look at Gavin too.
I mean I couldn't like Gavin right? I'm waiting to find my mate... You know if I do, eventually, get my wolf back. So I couldn't like him... but what is this aggravated feeling in my heart whenever Marla looks at him with love in her eyes.
Could I possible like Gavin? The jerk who constantly teases me and is almost never nice to anyone? What is happening to me...
