Chapter 26
The wolf whimpers and holds it's head down. I can't believe that that wolf is Tori. I've never seen her wolf before. Sure I knew she was a werewolf but it just didn't seem real until now. More importantly, why is she here right now... I thought her and Froam were both gone.
Slowly she starts approaching us.
"Don't come any closer." Gavin says firmly.
She looks up into my eyes and gives me a pleading look. Something moves me about her pleading look, like there is honesty and truth behind what she wants to tell us. Now is better than ever to talk I guess. I grab onto Gavin's arm and he looks down at me.
"Let's hear her out." I plead. He looks at me unsure. His protectiveness is nice but we need to listen to her.
I walk out from behind him and approach Tori. She looks at me with sad eyes. I wonder what she is sad about. She seems lost.
"Can you change back so we can talk?" I ask. She glances behind me at Gavin and then back at me. I let out a quick laugh as realization hits me. "You didn't bring clothes, did you?" I ask. She shakes her head. "Here." I say.
I reach down to the hem of my shirt, take it off and hand it to her. She takes it in her mouth gently and trots off into the woods.
It's weird, I know Tori is on Froam's side because he is her uncle but I just can't help but have hope. Hope that all those memories we made as friends were real. It hurts me to think she would fake being my friend to get closer to Kari.
A few moments later she comes out of the trees in my baggy t-shirt. She approaches me and stops when she gets a few feet away.
Just then I feel a presence close to my back. I turn and see Gavin standing protectively behind me. He's glaring in Tori's direction.
"I'm not going to hurt her." Tori snaps at him with venom in her voice.
I look back at her and see that she's glaring back at Gavin. Her brown eyes seem confused, lost and angry.
"You can see why I would be a little skeptical of that." He says. She sighs and looks down.
"Evelyn... I didn't think what my uncle was doing was bad... He always told me that he wants there to be peace and equality in this world. How can that be bad? Well that's what I thought anyway. I promised to help him. But I realize now that what he was doing was wrong... I'm angry at myself. I can't believe I was deceived by him for so long..." She mumbles honestly.
I reach out and grab her hand. "Tori it's okay. You grew up with him throwing those thoughts and ideas at you constantly. You never knew better..." She shakes her head.
"I should have... I should have known Evelyn. I grew up watching him murder people. How could I have not known. And now you're stuck here..." I laugh.
"It's not so bad here. They treat me just fine. They don't hurt me and I'm treated more like a princess than anything else." I say honestly. She looks up at me with watery-worried eyes.
"Evelyn that's what I needed to talk to you about. Froam is angry. Actual he is beyond angry, he's furious. He's not getting any credit and he's being persecuted for some crimes he committed back in America. He wants-"
She's cut off by the loud squawking of birds flying from the woods behind her. They seem to running from something, and fast.
Her eyes go wide and she turns quickly on her heals. Suddenly I see a bunch of rogue wolves stick their heads out of the tree line. Tori moves away from me and I feel Gavin step up. He pushes me behind him.
A large man walk out of the trees, he seems to be above the others. When I take a closer look I feel my heart stop. It's Froam. My heart begins to race and chills shoot down my spine. He is back.
Gavin goes to take a step toward our approaching guests, but I grab his shirt. I don't want him to leave me alone back here or do anything hasty.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't my little niece." His eyes shoot to Tori. "I guess I know where your loyalties lie."
"Uncle, you can't do this. You have done enough. Please just let it go." Tori says pleadingly. He shoots her a dirty look.
"Shut your mouth. I don't listen to traitors." He spits with venom clear in his voice. He turns to me. "You thought you could get away with this didn't you? How can I be content with you being treated like a queen while I rot away out here and not get any credit for all my hard work? This was my idea." He says angrily. "Now I want you back."
He wants me back? I can't, no I won't go to him. I know my fate if I go with him and I don't want that. I just don't want him to go back in his word and hurt Kari. What if he does? Then its all my fault...
"You can't have her." Gavin says with force. He balls his hands into fists and I can see the strain in his muscles. "Now leave before I kill you." He says firmly. Froam lets out a deep laugh.
"I taught you everything you know boy. If you think you're any better than me than go ahead and try." He takes a step forward. "Oh, by the way. Does she know?" He asks. "Did you tell her about all the little jobs you have taken on in the past? The murders you have committed?" Gavin tenses up immediately and I look at him shocked.
What is Froam talking about? Gavin committed murders?
"How about those innocent families you destroyed helping me look for your precious little Evelyn here." Gavin still doesn't say anything. "I bet you she doesn't know does she."
Gavin sits there frozen, he seems vulnerable. I can't stand seeing him like this, the Gavin I know would never act so lost. I reach my hand out and grab his shirt. I can see him relax slightly under my touch.
"Gavin it's okay, I'm not listening to him." I say quietly then I glare at Froam. "Everything he did in the past was to save his sister. If it weren't for you than Gavin could have lived a happy life, one without any worries. Instead you put him through hell. You're scum. Nothing better than the dirt under our feet." I spit at him.
I squeeze Gavin's shirt tighter. Gavin's fists ball up hard again, showing that his mind is focused on one thing right now, killing Froam.
"You're going to regret that you little bitch." He says. "Get her."
Suddenly the hoard of rogues comes flying out of the trees and are heading straight for Gavin and I. Gavin turns to me real fast and scoops me up.
Suddenly I'm weightless for a moment, then I'm in a tree. I look down and I can see the clearing below me.
"Stay here." Gavin says. He lets go of me, then just like that, he's gone.
I look down and see him appear on the field. He looks at the attacking rogues and then he runs and shifts into his dark brown wolf mid stride.
The first rogue attacks him but in a mere second the rogue is dead. Gavin disappears. Suddenly he pops up next to an unexpecting rogue and tackles him to the ground. After they tumble for a bit Gavin gets the upper hand and rips his throat out.
He easily takes out every rogue, one by one. It all happens the same way. He disappears then shows up at the side of a random rogue. Then he tackles them to the floor and rips their throat out. I can't say the sight is pretty, but they are all attacking to kill so it's either he kills or gets killed.
Finally he takes out the last rogue. The only one left is Froam. Gavin lets out a vicious snarl and I see the fear in Froam's eyes.
Froam takes in a deep shaky breath, then slowly he strides forward and shifts. His wolf is scraggly and skinny, He doesn't stand a chance against Gavin's large and muscular wolf. Gavin gets into a low fighting position and Froam does the same.
Froam begins to circle around Gavin, stalking him like he is his pray. Gavin moves with Froam's strides so that he and Froam are always face to face.
Suddenly Froam jumps at Gavin with the intent to kill. Gavin quickly disappears into thin air. Before Froam has a chance to react, Gavin appears above Froam. I see Froam's wolf smirk as he grabs Gavin's paw in the air and whips him hard onto the ground. I hear a loud yelp. Oh no!
Froam lets go of his paw and goes down to strike his neck. As he gets his mouth around Gavin's neck he snaps his jaw shut. I close my eyes and hear a yelp sound through the woods. I feel tears escape my eyes and I squeeze onto my legs. How could this happen...?
Gavin couldn't have lost. He was so prepared. He even had the ability to teleport and Froam didn't.
Tears continue to flow and I let out a pained cry. Why does my heart ache so much?
A few moments later I hear a light bark. I suck in a shaky breath and look down. I see a dark blob beneath me.
I whip away the tears in my eyes and see a wolf below me. He is slightly bloodied but I don't mind. This is a miracle that came at the perfect time.
I look back into the field and see a skinny, matted wolf lying lifeless on the floor. Gavin won.
I look back down at the fluffy creature and notice him looking at me expectantly. I slowly crawl down the tree and take in Gavin's majestic dark brown wolf. He gazes back at me with intensity in his gray eyes.
After a moment of the suspense building between us, I realize I can't wait any longer. I run up to him and hug his huge neck.
"You scared the shit out of me." I say and sniffle in some remaining tears. "Don't ever do that to me again." I add. He leans his head onto my back, pulling me into a wolfy embrace.
After I sniffle a few more times I let go of him. I face the bloodied field and sigh. So much unnecessary death. If Froam just acted like a normal sane person, so many lives could have been saved. I notice then that Tori is gone. I wonder where she went?
"What now?" I ask.
I feel a wet nose push into my stomach and I giggle from the coldness. I look at Gavin's cute wolf face and he motions for me to get on his back with his huge head. I smile.
"Really? You will let me ride on your back?" His face falls into a frown and I laugh and pet his head.
"You're such a good boy." He rolls his eyes and I laugh even harder. I walk up to his back and he bends down so I can sit on him.
I straddle him and he stands up. He starts to walk back into the woods. I grab onto his fur tightly and lie down on him. I close my eyes and allow the slight breeze to calm me down. It's been a rough day... I can't believe Froam came after me again... Well he's dead now, but still. It's not like it was my fault that they didn't give him credit for anything.
I feel Gavin stop moving and I push up from his back and glance around. I see that we are back at the barn. Well we are in the woods that surrounds the barn. Gavin bends down and I hop off of his soft and furry back. I miss the sensation if it already and he turns from me. He trots off behind a tree.
I know he is going to change so I will give him as much privacy as needed. I turn to stare at the beautiful barn. This place is really pretty but I will have to appreciate it more another day. All I want right now is to be around Gavin a little more. I feel lonely already with him just behind the tree.
Truth be told, I'm still a little shaken up. Being confronted by Froam again really scared me. What if he had me in his possession again? What if he had gotten away instead of died? What if he killed Gavin?
So many what ifs that could have happened and I'm glad none of them did. I don't know what I would do with myself.
Gavin comes strolling out from behind his tree wearing just a pair of shorts. His chest is scratched up and he is pretty bloody. I see a long claw mark that trails from his upper chest down to his rib cage. It looks extremely painful.
Maybe I shouldn't do this but I need to be closer to him. I slowly walk to him and gently reach my hand up to touch near his wound. the gash looks terrible, and he got this from protecting me.
He flinches a little at the contact. "We should probably get this looked at before it gets infected." I say and look up into his eyes.
That's when I notice his eyes are slightly darker than normal. Huh, that's unusual. He grabs my hand from his chest and brings my hand down. He takes in a deep breath and then he looks at me again. Weird, his eyes are normal colored again.
"I would say lets go eat dinner, but I can't go in looking like this..." He says and glances down at his body.
I laugh. "No you can't go to dinner like that." He raises an eyebrow at me.
"Oh and you want to go looking like that." he says. I frown. What's that supposed to mean? He glances down and my body and I follow his eyes down and see that I'm in a sports bra and my shorts. Oh crap! I forgot I gave Tori my shirt...
"Oh..." I look at him and give him a shy smile. "Mind if I borrow one of your t-shirts?" I ask. He laughs.
"Not at all. Now come on." He offers me his hand and I take it. Gently he scoops me up. Then just like that the sensation of weightlessness fills me and we disappear.
