Chapter 17
Warmth. That's what I feel right now. I smile and snuggle closer into my pillow. Huh, my pillow is harder than it was last night but it's still comfortable. I yawn and try to stretch my arms up, but they're stuck under the covers. I wiggle them up. As I do they graze something hard. Weird.
I slowly open my eyes and allow them to adjust to the light. Oh shit! I realize that I'm in Gavin's arms and my hands are on his chest. I must have cuddled next to him because I'm on his side of the bed. Oh god. This is embarrassing, I hope he doesn't wake up. I look around and I see the clock.
It's eight forty. Crap! We have school today and we are already late.
Well first things first. I have to get out of Gavin's arms without him realizing I cuddled up to him last night...
I slowly crawl out of the warm covers. As I manage to squeeze out, Gavin's arm falls to the bed with a little thud. I freeze... Luckily he doesn't wake up from that. I sigh and make my way to the bathroom. I use the toilet, brush my teeth, wash my face and make sure my hair isn't super bed-head-crazy.
Okay, now it's time to wake Gavin up. I walk back out into the room. I see Gavin is still sound asleep on the bed. He's in the same position I left him in. His sleeping face looks so innocent and different than his normal serious face when he's awake. I smile, it's kind of cute. You know, if the jerk Gavin could ever be cute...
I approach his side of the bed. Slowly I reach down and gently shake his arm. His eyes shoot open and once again I'm flat on my back on the bed and Gavin is on top of me. I frown, this position seems familiar.
"Morning." I say in a monotone voice.
"Morning..." He says. I raise an eyebrow at him.
"So, does this happen every time someone wakes you up... Or just with me?" He smirks.
"Just you. Guess you're special or something." I roll my eyes and laugh.
"Yeah sure." I try to push him off me but no matter how hard I push he doesn't budge. I sigh. "You're going to use the fact that I don't have wolf strength against me all the time aren't you?" I ask him.
He nods and smirks. "Oh yeah." I pout out my bottom lip.
"But you have to get off! I'm hungry..." He raises an eyebrow.
"What makes you think that your pouting is going to work on me?" I give him a light smile.
"Because it's cute." He laughs. I feel my heart flutter a little at his sweet laugh.
"Whatever you say." He gets off of me then offers me his hand. I grab it and he pulls me up. "So breakfast?" I nod. "Let me just get all my stuff together. Do you have your wet clothes?" He asks me.
"Oh yeah, I forgot about those." I wonder into the bathroom and pick up all my dirty clothes. I join Gavin in the room and hand him my stuff. He tosses it in his bag then zips it up.
"Ready?" He asks.
I smile, "Yup!" He throws his bag over his shoulder and makes his way to the door. When we get out we go to the main lobby. The same manager is still sitting at the desk reading a book.
Gavin walks up to him and gives him the key and checks out. When he comes back to me he says, "Turns out they don't serve breakfast here..." My jaw drops.
"What kind of hotel doesn't serve breakfast?" I shout angrily. He laughs and shushes me. The manager looks up from his book and shoots me a dirty look. I blush.
"Apparently this one, but that's fine we can just get breakfast back in New Heaven." I look at him concerned.
"You sure you have enough energy? I don't want to push you." I say gently. I feel really bad, plus I don't know Gavin's limits so I'm not sure if he really does have enough energy to take me back or not.
He smiles and ruffles my hair. "I'm fine don't worry about it. Now come on, I think it's time we get back." He walks toward the back exit. I just stare at him for a moment. Wow, this Gavin is so much different than the usual jerk... He just smiled at me and ruffled my hair... I have to say, I kind of like this Gavin.
I quickly catch up to him and we make it deep into the trees of the woods.
"Do you mind if I bring us back to my place? No one should be home. But I need to get into my school stuff." He says. I nod.
"Yeah that's fine. Do you mind driving me back to the pack house?" I ask.
"Not at all." he says. He looks me in the eyes and I gaze into his grey ones. "Come on." He says.
I take a few steps closer to him. Suddenly he scoops me up into his arms and I grab onto his shirt. I don't know why, but this whole teleporting thing scares me...
"Ready?" I nod.
The air around me feels light and suddenly I'm weightless again. I close my eyes and squeeze Gavin's shirt tighter.
"We're back." He says quietly. I open my eyes and sigh. He places me down gently and I notice we are inside Gavin's room. Well, their basement. "Let me just throw on my clothes and then I can make you some breakfast." He says.
"You're going to make me breakfast?" I ask shocked. He laughs and starts to take his shirt off.
"Yeah. Why is that weird?" I blush at how openly he just took his shirt off.
"I just wouldn't expect it from you. And can you warm me next time you decide to take your shirt off?" I say as I stare at the wall and try to calm my flaming cheeks.
I hear Gavin's deep laugh and I smile again. "Act like you haven't seen me with my shirt off before." I roll my eyes and look back at him as he rummaged through his drawer.
"Not the point!" I say. Suddenly I notice a bruise on Gavin's rib cage. He's about to throw on his school shirt when I stop him. "Wait." I say and walk up to him. I gently place my hand on his bruised skin. "What happened?" I ask quietly then look up into his shocked grey eyes.
"Oh that. I ran into the side of our kitchen table." He says. I give him a questioning look. He knows I don't believe him. "I'm fine, honest." he says. "Now, can I finish changing or are you just going to keep touching me all day?" he adds with a smirk.
I look down and see I'm still touching his chest. I blush crazy red and turn around and block my eyes. "oh my gosh, I'm so sorry." I shout. "I didn't realize..." He laughs.
"It's fine Evelyn." I hear him shuffle around for a few moments then he says, "You can turn around now. I'm all changed." I turn around and see Gavin finishing up the buttons on his uniform shirt. "Come on, let's get you fed."
I follow him up the stairs. He leads me to their kitchen and he tells me to sit down on a stool that's at the island. He walks over to the fridge and opens it.
"Anything in particular you are in the mood for?" He asks me.
Hmm... Lets see.... I actually don't know. "Honestly, I have no idea what I want. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse... So anything sounds good."
He pops his head out of the fridge, stands up straight, then runs a hand through his hair. "I could make... waffles." he turns to me. "Is that okay?"
I smile brightly. "I love waffles! That's a great idea!" He gets all the materials together and plugs in the waffle maker. Then he puts together the flour, eggs and all that. I look at him shocked.
"You're making them from scratch?" he looks at me with a serious face.
"Yeah? Is there any other way to make them? They taste ten times worse coming from the box." he says. I smile.
"That's awesome. I like them better this way. I'm just surprised you actually know how to make something besides eggs..." He laughs.
"Yeah well I've had a lot of practice." he says and pours the batter into the waffle machine. "I used to cook for my little sister all the time..." He says.
"You have a sister?" I ask. He nods. "What's her name?"
"Her name is Ariana. She's a year younger than us." He says.
"Why isn't she here with you guys?" Gavin stops what he's doing and looks down at the counter in front of him.
"She was taken..." He says angrily.
She was taken... Like abducted? oh my god...
"I'm so sorry..." I say sympathetically. I can see the tension in his back muscles from his anger. I hop out of my seat and place a hand on his shoulder. He relaxes a little but I can tell he's still angry.
"I'm trying to help her." he says sadly. "There's not much I can do..." I slide my hand down his arm and onto his forearm. I pull slightly. He turns toward me and I reach up and hug him.
"You will find her Gavin. Don't worry." I say softly. I feel his arms encircle me as he hugs me back. "I will help you how ever I can." I say.
Suddenly Gavin release me from the hug and pulls back. I give him a strange look.
"You can't help me Evelyn. Just don't try." He says. What does he mean? Doesn't he want help finding his sister?
He sighs and runs a hand through his hair.
"Your waffles are done." I look at the machine and see that it's light is green now. Gavin takes out my waffles and puts them on a plate. I take them and sit back down in my seat.
After he hands me the syrup, my knife and fork I say "Thanks." He nods and goes to make his waffles.
We were getting along so well and now I feel like things are awkward between us. Why doesn't he want my help finding his sister? This is so weird. There are so many thing about Gavin that I just don't understand.
We eat our waffles in silence. After I help him clean up he grabs his keys and we head out to his car. He turns on his SUV and then we go to the pack house.
When he pulls into the driveway and parks I turn to him, "Do you want to come in? I might be a little bit." I say.
"Sure." he says. He turns off his car.
I lead him through the house and up to my room. When we get in I turn to him and say, "Wait here, I'll change real fast."
I grab my school clothes and change in the bathroom. I brush my hair out and put on a little bit if mascara. After that I run back out to my closet to grab my shoes.
Once I'm all set I sigh. "Okay. I'm ready." He stands up from my bed and follows me trough the house when we get outside I stop in my tracks. Gavin runs into me and I stumble forward a little but he catches me before I fall.
"Why did you stop?" he says. I turn and look at him with worried eyes.
"I forgot about Kari! I have to check on her." I look at his car then back to him. "If you don't want to wait for me that's fine... You can go to school without me."
"No it's fine. I hate school anyway. Want me to drive you to the pack doctor's house?" he asks me. I nod happily.
"Yes please."
After arriving at the pack doctors and finding out Kari's room, we finally get to see her.
I walk into her room. A light beeping sound meets my ears and I sigh. I approach her bed and sit down in the chair next to her. I grab her hand in my own and look at her sleeping face. I know that this spell won't last forever, but it makes me sad that she's like this.
"She will be okay, right?" Gavin says from the door way. I look at him and nod.
"She should be fine. Gloria said that it should last at most a day." I glance back at Kari. Suddenly her eyes begin to clench and then just like that they open. She looks around herself then sits up quickly.
She looks at me shocked. "Evelyn?" she asks. I nod. "Where am I?" She looks around.
"You're in the pack doctor's house." I say quietly. "I found you passed out." I say. She turns to me shocked.
"You found me passed out? Where?"
"South Carolina." Then I look up at her and frown. "Why the hell would you go after her alone Kari! You know how dangerous she could be, and you're pregnant with twins for Christ sake! You have a great responsibility to uphold." I shout angrily. She smiles and squeezes my hand.
"There's the Evelyn I know and love." She lets out a sigh. "Before I tell you why I went after Gloria. Would you be kind enough to introduce me to the man standing in the doorway?" She says. I look up at Gavin and laugh. I forgot about him for a moment.
"Gavin come here and let me introduce you to my sister." I say and wave him over. He approaches slowly and walks up from behind me. "Kari this is Gavin. He is one of the new wolves who is staying in our town for a bit" I say.
Kari takes her hand out of mine and puts it out in front of Gavin. He takes it and shakes her hand lightly.
"It's nice to meet you." he says.
"It's nice to meet you too Gavin." She looks between Gavin and I. "Are you two a thing?" She asks. My jaw drops open.
"No!" I shout. "not even a little bit. Kari don't make things weird." I say with a frown. She laughs and raises her hands up defensively.
"Okay jeesh, it was just a question."
"Now please explain yourself." I say to her. Her eyes flick up to Gavin. I roll my eyes. "He knows. I told him about Gloria and how she has my wolf." Kari sighs.
"Well I've been looking for her everywhere. For years she has been traveling and constantly moving... I finally found her and I just couldn't stop myself... Evelyn it's not fair for you to grow up in a house of werewolves when... when..."
"When I'm just a human? Kari I don't care about that. I just want you safe. Please don't do anything rash like that again. I couldn't bear it if you got hurt because of me." I say quietly.
"It's my fault this happened to you in the first place." She states. I frown.
"No it isn't."
"Yes it is. If it wasn't for me, then Gloria never would have come and taken your ability to shift." She says. I shake my head.
"Kari none of that is your fault and you know it." I stand from the chair. "Rest up. I need to go to school. Just, don't do anything rash like that again. You would kill me and Bryce if you ever got hurt. Please don't do it." I say.
She nods. "Fine... I'm sorry I couldn't help Evie." She adds quietly. I give a smile.
"You help me everyday. I'll see you when I get home from school. I love you Kari." I say and wave to her.
"I love you too Evie." She turns to Gavin. "It was nice meeting you."
"You too." He says and follows me out the door. I shut it behind us. Suddenly Gavin laughs. I turn to him and frown.
"What?"
"So, Evie huh?" I laugh and nod my head.
"Yeah, that's my childhood nickname... Kari and Bryce will never stop calling me that..." He smiles and ruffles my hair.
"It's cute." My eyes go wide. Wait did he just call my nickname cute? Before I can ask him he turns around and starts walking to his car. He just complimented me right? Well my name, but that's still kind of complimenting me... right?
I quickly catch up to him and we hop into his car. He turns it on. I look at the clock. Holy crap! It's 11:30. we are so late for school... It's probably not even plausible to go. I turn to Gavin.
"I mean realistically... It's not even worth going to school, right?" I ask him. He laughs.
"Oh we are going. I need to go to classes so that way I can go to practice. We have our first game tomorrow. There is no way I'm not going to play in that." He says. I huff and lean back into my seat.
"Fine you win... Buttface." I say. He laughs.
"Whatever Evie." I turn to him and glare.
"No. You are not going to call me that! Especially not in front of people. I won't let you Gavin." He smirks.
"Oh I'm going to. How can you stop me?" I open my mouth then close it again. Ugh. I hate when I have nothing to say back.
"Fine... Call me what you want. Just know that every time you say it I will want to punch you in the face." He laughs.
"Fair enough." He reaches the radio and turns it on. Country blares through the speakers and he quickly turns it down. He goes to change the station but I stop him.
"Wait!" I say. "I like country. Keep it."
He looks at me funny. "You actually like Country music?" he asks. I nod.
"Of course. It's really good, I don't know why everyone hates on it." I say with a shrug.
"Finally, someone who understands." He says. I smile.
The rest of the ride goes smoothly. We pretty much just stay silent and listen to the country station until we reach the school.
