Chapter 15
Bang.
A loud boom sounds through the sky. I look around me. Where am I? I squint my eyes but the rain is clouding my vision, making it difficult to see. As I walk, I notice a light in the distance. Maybe someone can tell me exactly where I am right now.
I follow the dim light. As I get closer I see that it is illuminating a small cabin. I squint my eyes through the thundering rain and notice that it's cabin number 24. Why does it have a number? I walk onto the steps of the small cabin and under its dry awning. I ring my hair out and take a closer look at where I am. When I do, I see a name above the number 24. It says Morris Woodberry Cabins. Oh so this has to be a rental. I walk up to the door and knock.
After a few minutes of no replies, I give up on waiting. I try to turn the door nob but it doesn't budge. Damn it's locked... Guess I need to try something else. I look back out into the thundering rain. Great, I have to go back out in that...
I take a deep breath. Well here goes nothing. I step back out into the sad scene.
I see another light attached to the house that shines down on what appears to be a tiny drive way. Well, if you can even call it that. It's more like a dirt patch. There are two cars parked there. I walk around and look at the back of the first car. I read the license plate and it says it is from South Carolina. Holy crap, how did I get in South Carolina? I look closer at the plate and it says the town of Littleton. I look at the second car which is a truck. Hm, weird that kinda looks like Bryce's truck.
I hear a loud noise. Almost like someone yelling. It came from behind the cabin.
I sprint in the direction of the noise. It sounded like a girl's voice. What if someone's in trouble?
My vision is blurred by the rain but I soon see two foggy figures in the distance. They are standing pretty far from one another. I take a step closer but their words are muffled by the sound of droplets hitting the forest around me. On the bright side, I feel the rain beginning to lighten up.
I step closer and the rain clears up enough for me to hear a little bit of what's going on.
"-found me. Good job. But finding me can't help your little sister. You don't know how to reverse it."
"I might not know a spell to reverse it but I sure as hell know one way to help my sister." Holy crap is that Kari? What the hell is she doing in the pouring rain in South Carolina talking to this crazy woman.
The lady with white hair says, "Oh yeah. What's that?"
Suddenly Kari rips a black object from her pocket and points it at the woman. Oh my god, it's a gun! Where the hell did she get a gun from? Kari what are you thinking?
"I'm going to kill you Gloria." I look at her shocked. Hold on. Gloria? as in the witch who stole my ability to shift? I turn and see Gloria smirking.
"Si unus ceciderit sopor" Gloria speaks quickly. Kari's expression turns to that of horror. What just happened?
The gun falls to the floor with a thud followed by my sisters body. Kari! I try to shout but no words come out of my mouth. Gloria approaches her unmoving body and kneels down.
"You thought you could beat me with a simple gun? Oh hun, you're too naive." She picks up the gun and twirls it in her hand. "I never was fond of these things." She looks up quickly as if she heard a noise. I hear rustling behind me but I don't turn. My eyes are glued to Gloria.
She closes her eyes. Then I see her hands start to turn into big paws and a snout grows from her face. In a matter of seconds there is no longer a crazy white hair woman in front of me. Instead there is a beautiful brown and white wolf. It's coat is similar to that of a husky, it is mostly brown but it's chest, stomach, and some of its face is white. The only ugly thing about this wolf is it's red eyes. She stands there for a moment. I almost feel as if she's staring at me...
Bang.
I jolt up and look around me. I feel a drop of sweat on my forehead and I wipe it off. I'm in my bedroom again... Wait does that mean... Kari's in South Carolina right now? Oh my god! Shes pregnant and crazy! I need to get her back here now! But how? She's in freaking South Carolina and I'm in New Heaven, Connecticut. That's at least a half a day drive!
Whatever I can't sit here and do nothing. I need someone's help... but who?
I run to my closet and turn on the light. First things first, I need clothes. I put on gym shorts and a big sweatshirt with a hood. Then I throw on my rain boots.
Who can help me... Jason! He always knows what to do.
I run out of my room and go straight to his room. I don't knock on the door, instead I just barge in. The lights are off. I'm assuming he's sleeping. I run up to his bed.
His gentle breathes are light and steady. I was right, he is asleep. I turn on his side lamp and look at his peaceful face. I lightly shake him. He groans for a moment then slowly opens his eyes. He sees me, suddenly he's wide awake and attentive.
"Ev, what's up. What time is it?" he asks. I look at his clock.
"It's 12:15. Jason we don't have time. Kari is in trouble." I say to him. He gives me an odd look and I know I have to explain myself. "I had a vision. Kari went after Gloria and Gloria knocked her out. She could be passed out in the pouring rain right now! She's pregnant, we need to get her now!" He throws his covers off of himself and runs to his wardrobe. He tosses on a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.
Then he grabs his keys off his night stand and throws on a pair of socks and running sneakers.
"Okay I'm ready. Where is she?" He asks.
"South Carolina."
He looks at me for a moment without saying a word. Then he says, "Evelyn I can't get to South Carolina in less than twelve hours. She could be passed out for too long at that point. Even a plane can't get us there on time." He says.
Tears begin to form in the brinks of my eyes. "I know..." I say.
"I mean it's not like we can just magically transport ourselves. We can't just snap our fingers than poof we are there, you know?" He asks. Transport ourselves? Magically? That's it!
"Jason you're a genius, come on!" I grab his hand and drag him out of his room.
"What do you mean? Where are we going?" He says.
"We are going to get someone who can help us with just that."
*****
"No." Jason's says to me. "There is no way we are going in there and asking Gavin out of all people to help us."
"Jason we have no choice. I know what I saw, and I know he can teleport." I say to him. I step out of the car and shut the door quietly. I walk to the front and meet up with Jason.
"What if you're wrong Ev." I look down.
"I can't be wrong. Not this time." He looks at me unsure. "Jason, either leave or come with me. I don't care which you do, but I need him right now."
He sighs and shakes his head. "I can't believe I'm agreeing to this..." I smile. Thank god he's coming. I'm nervous enough about this situation. It would be ten times harder without him here.
I bring him around back. Okay I know Gavin is in the basement. It's a good thing the house is on a slope and there is a door to the basement from the backyard. I knock.
No answer. I huff. Well this is just great... I guess I can try breaking in?
I grab onto the handle of the sliding door and pull. It opens! Yes! I go to take a step into the house but a hand catches my shoulder.
"Evelyn you can't just go into their house." he whispers. I roll my eyes.
"I'm just going to get Gavin out here. Don't worry I will be fine. Stay here and keep watch." I say. He gives me an unsure look but he nods. He lets go of my shoulder and I slip into the basement and shut the door behind me.
It's dark, but I can still see a little bit because of a few things that are glowing here and there from stuff like clocks, chargers and such. I hear light breathing coming from the right side of the basement. He must be over there. I silently make my way over to that area. I'm careful not to step on anything.
There is a clock shining right near Gavin's head. I can see that he is on a pull out bed. I tiptoe over to the side where the clock is. I slowly reach down and touch his upper arm.
Suddenly his eyes snap open and the next thing I know I hit the bed with a loud thud and Gavin is on top of me. He holds one of my hands above my head and he has his other hand around my throat.
I stare at him wide eyed for a moment. Suddenly his eyes adjust and he says, "Evelyn? Is that you?" I'm still shocked so I just nod my head. He slowly takes his hand off my neck and I sigh in relief. "Why the hell are you in my house?" he asks.
"I need your help." I say. He gives me a strange look.
"You need my help?" He looks to his left and then looks back at me "At twelve thirty in the morning?"
"Yes... Gavin this is going to sound pretty weird and strange coming from me but... um... I need you to teleport me to South Carolina." His eyes widen for a second then he composes himself.
"Teleport? What are you talking about." He says. I let out a small frustrated grunt. I don't have time for this...
"Gavin please stop trying to fool me. I know you can teleport okay. But I really need you. My sister is in danger." His eyes widen even more.
"Kari?" he asks. Weird... I don't remember telling him her name...
"Yes. And I need to go help her now. There is no time." I say. He looks at me conflicted for a moment. I look up at him and say, "Um Gavin."
"Yeah..."
"Can you get off of me?" I ask quietly.
"Oh shit, yeah." he says. he gets off of me and helps me lean up. "I'm kind of a crazy sleeper..."
"I can see that." I say and smile. "Now will you please help me?"
He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. "I guess... But there's only one problem."
"What's that?"
"I can only teleport one person at a time. I'm not strong enough to do more than that yet..." Oh. That might be a problem...
"Well... would you be able to bring my sister back here then go back to South Carolina to get me?" I ask. He sighs.
"I don't know. That's a long distance. I can try but I don't know how much energy it will use up..." I shake my head.
"You know what, it doesn't matter. What matters is getting Kari back here. Let's go we need to tell Jason." I say and stand to go to the door.
"Wait, Jason is here? You told him about me?" He asks. I turn around.
"Yeah I told him about you... He's the one who drove me here."
"Who else knows."
"No one." he gives me a serious look. I frown. "I'm serious."
"You better not be lying." He says angrily. Jeez why doesn't he trust me.
"I'm not. Now come on, there's not much time." I say.
I meet up with Jason outside. When Gavin walks out of the house Jason shoots him a dirty look. I roll my eyes. What a child.
"Jason, Gavin's going to take me to South Carolina. We are going to find Kari and Gavin's going to bring her back." Jason frowns.
"No deal. I'm coming too."He says.
"You can't." I say. He looks at me funny. "Gavin can only teleport one person at a time... I need to go with him because I know where Kari is, but he can only bring her back first. Trouble is, that's kind of far so I might be stuck there until Gavin gets his strength back to come get me..."
"You can't go then." He adds quickly. I frown.
"You can't tell me what to do Jason. Kari is always there for me but this time she needs me. I can't bail on her. I'm going." He sighs.
"You have one of the most stubborn heads I know..." He reaches out and grabs me into a hug. "I know I can't stop you. So be safe." I nod my head against his chest. "I will stay here and wait. I will bring Kari to a hospital when he returns with her."
I wiggle of of his arms and smile at him. "Thank you Jason." I turn to Gavin. "Ready?" I ask him.
"As ready as I'll ever be." he says. I walk up to him. He bends down and scoops me up princess style. I look at him shocked. A growl sounds from behind me then Gavin frowns. He glares at Jason. "Calm down." He says. "This is the best way to travel."
"Whatever..." I hear Jason mumble.
"Where to exactly?" Gavin asks me.
"Littleton, South Carolina." I say from memory. That is what the license plate said anyway... Gavin takes in a deep breath.
Suddenly I feel like I'm weightless, like when you're coming down from a roller coaster and you lift up out of your seat, you feel like there's no gravity. Well that's how I feel. I squeeze my eyes shut and grip onto Gavin's sweatshirt tightly. I never did like roller coasters.
A few moments pass then I hear a reassuring sound of Gavin's voice. "We're here." he says. Thank god, that was crazy...
"How?" I ask him.
"How what...?"
"How do you manage to do that all the time... Doesn't it startle you at all?" I ask in amazement.
"Well when you've been doing it since you were a baby you kind of get used to it." he says. Oh god... That must have been horrifying...
"Since you were a baby?" I ask astonished. No way. How can a baby control where he goes?
"Okay well not that small, but small enough where one second I would be on the toddler swings and the next I would be inside my house... I had no idea what I was doing or how I was doing it. Luckily, my dad had this trait as well, so he knew how to handle me." Wow, I never knew a power could be a burden like that.
I look around me and notice we are in a building. We are in a small secluded area right now so I'm not exactly sure where we are. It kind of looks like a small hallway that would be in the back of a building or something. Slowly Gavin places me on the ground.
I take a couple of steps away from the hallway and then the room opens up and I see that we are in what looks to be a bus station. There is a sign hanging near the front door that says 'Thanks for visiting Littleton Bus Station'. He did it! I mean I never doubted him, I'm just saying. This is impressive.
I walk over to the map they have. Okay so this town isn't that big. It seems to be encircled by a river. What is the name of the place that I'm looking for again? Oh yeah! It's called Morris Woodberry Cabins. There has to be someone around here who can help me find it.
I spin on my heals. In bright lit up letters I see 'Information Center' written over a glass counter. Duh.
I walk over and I feel Gavin follow me. The lady at the desk seems young, almost my age. She smiles at me generously then looks behind me to Gavin. Funny thing is, her eyes never return to me...
I roll my eyes. "Excuse me." I say. She doesn't answer. "Excuse me!" She snaps out of her gaze and looks at me.
"Oh I'm sorry, how can I help you?" I sigh.
"Is there a company called Morris Woodberry Cabins around here?"
"Oh you mean the resort that also does cabin rentals?" I nod and she looks between Gavin and I. "Are you guys here for the special couple weekend?"
"Actually yes, we are, now what was that address." I say and smile sweetly at her. She frowns at the idea of Gavin being taken. I laugh to myself. Her facial expression is priceless.
She shuffles around in her cubicle and then come up with a little flyer. "The address is on here. A taxi can take you. The place is only a couple of miles away." She looks between the two of us. "Have a nice weekend." she says.
"Oh we will." I say with a sweet smile. I reach back and grab Gavin's hand and lead him toward the exit of the building. I don't know why she made me so mad, but she did.
"Why did you tell her we are going as a couple?" He says in a sour tone. Oh shit. How do I explain this? I cant say "oh yeah it got me really mad when she was checking you out so I put a stop to it?" Ha, yeah that would turn out nice.
"As a cover. You know so no one gets suspicious of us..." I say with a shrug.
"Suspicious of us huh?" he looks at me like I'm stupid. Ugh, why couldn't I think of a better excuse.
"Yes... better safe than sorry..." I release his hand. "So, we should probably get a taxi huh? I'll go get one." I say quickly.
I walk outside and see that it's raining, just as I suspected. I put my hood on and run out to a cab that's parked on the side of the road. I knock on the window and he lowers it to talk to me.
"Hi! Do you think you could drive my friend and I to Morris Woodberry Cabins?"
The man smiles, "Sure thing. It's right down the road. It will probably cost $10."
"That's fine. Thank you! Let me go get him."
I run back into the building to find that Gavin isn't where I left him. Ugh. Now I have to find him. This bus station is pretty small. Where could he be?
Then a thought flashes through my head. Maybe he wanted to talk to that girl at the counter after all... He probably went to tell her I was lying.
I turn to look at the counter where the girl is. To my surprise, he isn't there... Huh. Weird.
"What are you looking at?" A deep voice says. I sigh in relief and turn to see Gavin. He's eating a bag of chips.
"Where were you?" I shout. He hold up his chips and I sigh. "Of course. Food. Well come on, I got us a taxi." He crinkles up his already eaten chips and throws out the wrapper. Then he follows me out to the taxi. We get in and just like that we are on our way to Morris Woodberry Cabins.
