Chapter 10
I rush into the woods. Sprinting as fast as I can. As I dodge branches, a big rock comes into view. Deciding to continue me path instead of taking a small detour, I jump it. Suddenly a branch I didn't notice before cuts my forehead as I leap over the rock.
Shit.
I slow down a bit and pay more attention to my surroundings. I don't want anymore mishaps. I try to remember my vision and continue the path I took during it. After a little while my surroundings become more familiar.
I'm close.
In the distance I see four guys. That has to be them! I keep running as fast as I can. I see Jason shift and then Gavin shift.
No!
They jump on one another and start their fighting.
I fly past the trees and make it to them.
"Stop!" I shout. Both wolves ignore my yelling and continue to fight.
I look at Ralf and then at Seth. They both look at me with worried eyes.
"How can you guys just stand there! Make them stop fighting." I yell.
I hear a whimper come from the lumpy mess of the two wolves ripping at each other. I don't know who whimpered but I felt my heart break a little. How can they be fighting each other?
Suddenly Gavin kicks Jason hard. He goes flying and ends up slamming against a tree. Gavin slowly approaches Jason and lets out a vicious snarl.
No, he needs to stop!
I run up to where Jason is. I stand firmly in front of his injured wolf.
Gavin stops in his track. Slowly he lifts his head up.
"Gavin you need to stop. Jason is hurt. Please don't do this." I say.
I see his eyes begin to lighten as I try to calm him. Revealing his normal grey color to me. Thank god, he is starting to get control of himself again.
I hear a rustle from behind me. Letting my guard down, I turn and notice Jason. He is trying to stand up. Eventually he manages to get to his feet and glares right at Gavin. I frown at him.
"No Jason. This needs to stop." I demand.
He looks at me for a moment. Then he starts to get out of his offensive position. I let out a sigh of relief.
"Evelyn." I hear Seth say. I turn to look at him. "I think you should get out of there..." He says.
"Why? I have this under control." I say. Just then a growl sounds from behind me. I glare at Gavin. "Don't growl, this needs to be over."
"Evelyn, don't tell him what to do..." Seth warns me. I glare at him.
"He needs to know when enough is enough and right now he needs to stop."
I hear another low growl come from Gavin. I see his eyes begin to darken again. Crap, I just got him back to normal too... I take a few steps closer to him. Every step I take, I see him get slightly less defensive. Good, it doesn't appear that he's going to hurt me.
A loud growl erupts from behind me. Great, now what Jason?
"Ev, I don't think Jason wants you to go near Gavin." Ralf says, narrating what I already know. I let out a frustrated growl myself.
"Can you guys stop being so hard to please? You guys need to shift back right now." I look at Ralf. "We probably have a tree around here that we keep some shorts at. Ralf can you go find them?"
"Sure..." he says timidly. He looks quickly between the two wolves and goes to look for shorts.
"Evelyn what are you doing?" I hear Tori yell from the tree line. I look at her.
"I'm trying to stop these two from ripping each others heads off." I say frustratedly. "Care to help me?"
She sighs and starts to walk over to me. "Fine. I'll help." she gets over to my side and sighs. "Sorry I didn't tell you about us... It's just we haven't exactly talked to your Alpha about being on his land yet. We were trying to wait for the right time."
"I guess I shouldn't have gotten mad. I mean you don't really tell people you're a werewolf when you first meet. I guess the subject never came up. Sorry I got mad." I apologize genuinely. She smiles lightly.
"Well you should probably go calm that wolf over there... He looks pretty pissed... I will keep Gavin away..." She turns and strides toward Gavin. I hear Gavin let out a grunt. "Oh shut it Gavin. You're not supposed to fight with the other pack." She says frustratedly.
I turn to Jason. He's in another offensive position. I walk over to him and place my small hand on his giant head. After a little while of petting him, he closes his eyes and relaxes to my touch. Slowly he sits down and nuzzles his head into my stomach. I laugh and keep petting his head.
A few moments later I hear rustling and then Ralf approaches. In his hands he is holding two pairs of gym shorts. I sigh in relief. Finally.
Ralf tosses me a pair of shorts. I hand them to Jason who takes them in his mouth. He goes behind the tree that we are near. I turn and see Gavin's wolf walking behind another tree with shorts in his mouth.
A few moments pass and Jason emerges from the tree in his human form. I look at him and frown. Time to clear up this situation.
"So what the hell was that about." I shout at him. He rolls his eyes.
"They have no right to be on our land without permission." I glare at him.
"Seriously. That's what this is about? What bad have they done Jason?" He goes to open his mouth but I cut him off. "None! They haven't done anything bad. You heard Tori, they were just waiting for the right time."
He frustratedly runs a hand through his dirty blonde hair. "Evelyn, you know the rules."
Ugh, yeah. The rules are so dumb. No pack can be on or pass through our land without permission from the Alpha.
"I know them, but you still shouldn't have acted on your own."
"Whatever." he says and rolls his eyes.
I turn around and see Tori and Seth standing there looking at me. I slowly approach them.
"I'm so sorry about this... But we really do need to get you guys in to talk to our Alpha."
Tori scratches her head. "Yeah I suppose we should..." Just then, Gavin comes walking back over from behind his tree in just shorts.
Damn... He looks pretty good without a shirt on... Well I mean Jason does too, but I see Jason without shirts on all the time. It's weird to see that other guys have nice abs too...
"Evelyn?" Tori asks. I look at her confused.
"Yeah?" I ask. She laughs.
"I asked you when we should come see your Alpha." I feel my face burn red. Well that's embarrassing.
"Oh well maybe we should do it today... The sooner the better. Is it just you guys?"
"No there are a few more of us. We all live in a house not to far from here." she looks down. "Do you think he will let us stay?" she asks.
I laugh. "I have a pretty good feeling he will. Why don't you guys just go home and shower and then come over. I will text you the address of the pack house and make sure the Alpha knows your coming. Have the others in your group come, he likes to meet everyone."
"Thanks Evelyn." she says sweetly. "I'll see you then." She turns around and starts to walk away.
I look up and see Gavin staring at me. Just as Tori starts to pass by Gavin, she reaches out and grabs his hand in her own. Then she proceeds to drag him back toward the school.
I turn around and see Jason glaring at me with a dirty look. I roll my eyes.
"Don't give me that face. Now lets get back to the pack house and talk to Bryce."
****
"No." He says sternly.
"But Bryce! They are just in my grade. There are only a few of them. They just want to go to our school." I say with pleading eyes.
"Evie, I just don't like the idea of having them here unsupervised. I don't really trust other packs..." He says. I let out a sigh and turn to Kari.
"Come on sis, tell him to let them stay. I really like Tori and she's the main reason why our team is going to do good this year. As for Gavin and Seth, they are practically the stars of the football team!"
"Hey!" Jason shouts from behind me. I roll my eyes.
"Besides you Jay. But my point is we need them." I say. Kari looks at me for a moment then smiles.
She turns to Bryce. "Come on Bryce. Evie obviously knows them well enough to say that they are good people. They haven't done anything wrong. Plus you will get to meet them all tonight. If you meet them and you absolutely don't trust them then fine, you can kick them off our land. But even if you have the tiniest bit of hope to trust them, I want you to let them stay." I see Bryce sigh. Then he rolls his eyes.
"Fine. Tell them to be here at 8." Bryce says.
I jump up with a smile plastered onto my face. "Thank you guys so much!" I run over to Kari and hug her. After that I run up and give Bryce a hug then a kiss on the cheek. "You guys are amazing."
I run toward the door and grab Jason's wrist on my way out. Pulling him behind me, we make it to the game room and I let go of his wrist.
"Jay we did it." I say excitedly and pull out my phone to text Tori. Pull up my messages and I send her a text telling her when to come and where the pack house is located.
"Yay...." he says with no enthusiasm. I shoot him a dirty look.
"What's your damage?" I ask. I put my phone back into my pocket.
"I just don't like them Ev. I feel like they think they are so much better than us. Especially Gavin." he says. He lets out a frustrated growl.
"Oh, don't get mad so easily. This is about you guys fighting earlier, isn't it? And how he threw you into a tree?" He shoots me a glare.
"He didn't beat me if that's what you're getting at. I could easily kill him in a fight. You just stepped in and got in my way." he says frustratedly. I run a hand through my slightly dampened hair from my shower.
"Jason that's not what I was implying. I don't know which one of you could win in an actual fight and I don't want to find out. Now come on. Let's just play some video games until they get here." I make my way over to the tv and start setting up the wii.
Once that is done, I put in Super Smash Brothers and walk back over to Jason with a remote for both him and myself.
We start playing and I end up kicking his butt. After the first round and losing, he challenges me to another. I win, obviously. He pauses the game.
"How the hell are you so good at these games Ev?" he asks with slight annoyance in his tone.
He turns to me. I shrug my shoulders.
"Just naturally talented is all." I look at my nails and act like I beat him with no effort at all. He pushes me and I fall backward onto the couch. "hey!" I shout.
"You are not naturally talented at video games." he says and crawls over me. I frown.
"Am too." he moves his hands to my sides and starts tickling me. I dye laughing. "Okay okay okay! Stop!" I shout.
"Admit you aren't naturally talented at video games."
Tears begin to swell in my eyes as I keep laughing. "Fine!" I take in a few breathes between my laughs, "I'm not naturally talented at video games!" he keeps tickling me. "Jay you said you would stop!"
"No way this is just too funny." he says and chuckles. My stomach hurts from laughing so hard. Why won't he stop?
"Um... Evelyn?" I hear a girl ask cautiously from the door. Jason stops tickling me immediately, looking up at our visitors. I wipe my eyes and turn to see Tori, Gavin, Seth, and three other guys standing behind them. Oh, well this is awkward.
"Oh hi Tori." I say and stand up from the couch.
"Sorry. Some girl, Ashley, I think it was, let us in. She told me we would find you in here..." I smile.
"Well here I am." I see Gavin glaring at me. God what's his problem?
"Oh sorry for being rude! Let me introduce you to the others. This is Roger." she points to a well built male with red hair. He looks like he should be in either my grade or the grade below. "Trevor." She points to a boy with long brown hair that's held back in a pony tail. "and Carter." He's a big guys. He has a buzz cut and looks like he belongs in the marines or something.
"Oh it's nice to meet you guys." I say in a friendly tone. "Lets get you guys to go see our Alpha." I push my way past the six of them and lead them to Bryce's office.
I open the door and tell them to go in. Bryce stands up from his chair and walks around his desk. His sticks his hand out, introducing himself to everyone as they enter. Once that is done, they all take a seat and I stand near the door.
"So, Evelyn here tells me you guys have been on my land for a little while now." I see Tori look down at her lap. "She also told me how good of people you are. So I'm willing to give you guys a chance. I'll let you stay. But if my judgement of you turns out to be wrong, and you guys break my trust. You will be kicked off my land immediately and there will be consequences. Do you understand?"
They all nod their heads in synchronization and say, "Yes sir."
"Also, all my rules must be obeyed. I've taken the liberty to print out a copy of our laws. Read them over because we will hold you guys to those standards. Is that understood?"
"Yes sir." they all say again. I roll my eyes.
It's so weird seeing Bryce act as a big-tough Alpha. He's so not like this. But I mean I guess this is how he has to act. Poor guy.
"On that note, you guys can go. It was nice meeting you all. If you'd like, you can hang out and Evelyn can show you around the pack house. But that's up to you." Tori smiles and stands up.
"Thank you so much Alpha Bryce. You have been very considerate."
He smiles back. "No problem. I hope you guys enjoy your time here." he says.
I clap my hands once and everyone looks at me, "Well on that note, do you guys want me to show you around?"
Tori and the rest stand up and join me at the door. "I'm down for a tour, how about you guys?" Tori says.
"I need to go back to the house to get ready for work." Carter says.
"Roger and I want to head back too. Its getting kind of late." Trevor says. Tori sticks her tongue out at them.
"Party poopers. Good thing we took two cars." I smile and lead them out of Bryce's office.
"Who said Seth and I wanted to stay?" Gavin says as I shut the office door. The other three are already leaving down the hallway and going to the front door... guess they didn't want to say goodbye.
Tori grabs Gavin's arm and gives him puppy dog eyes... I don't know why but I don't really like her acting like this. Maybe it's because I'm used to her being like me, because she plays soccer.
"Come on Gavin we have to stay! Pretty please!"
"No."
"Come on!"
"No."
"Gavin, come on. Give the girl what she wants." Seth says and folds his arms over his chest. I hear Gavin sigh.
"Fine." Tori cheers and lets go of Gavin's arm.
"Where to first?" she asks and looks at me with a bright smile. I shrug.
"Well we can go to the kitchen first I guess. Do you guys want a snack?" Tori nods her head.
"I'm starving!" She says.
I lead them down the hallway. I point out what each room is as we pass. Tori seems the most intrigued by the tour. Gavin could care less about what's going on. Seth is just along for the ride, but at least he is paying attention to me, unlike Gavin.
We walk into the giant kitchen. I see Jason and Rosie sitting and talking at the island. Rosie has a yogurt and Jason is eating chips. I look around, no one else is here. You know I never realized just how big the kitchen was. When it's crowded in the morning and at night I just don't realize how large the space is.
"Hey guys, welcome to our pack house." Rosie says. Then she glares at me. Damn she's still mad I didn't introduce her to Gavin and Seth earlier... Well at least they are here now right?
"Thanks, you guys have a really nice place here." Tori says and runs her hand over the granite countertops.
"It's not that special. But we do have some pretty cool things." Jason says to her.
"No freaking way. Look how huge this freaking flat screen t.v. is!" Seth says as he approaches our large flat screen.
"You think that's cool? You should come see my t.v. It comes out of my dresser." Jason says with a proud smirk on his face. I roll my eyes. He's always been in love with that thing.
"No way. Can I see it now? That wouldn't be a problem would it?" Seth asks.
"Not at all man. Come on." Jason stands and they leave the room together. Wow, way to leave us guys!
I turn to Tori, Rosie and Gavin. "So do you guys want a snack?" Rosie holds up her Yogurt to show that she satisfied.
"Yes please!" Tori says. I look at Gavin. He just shakes his head no. Would it kill him to answer me?
I open up the cabinet and reveal all our snacks to Tori. "Pick whatever you'd like!" I say happily. She stands next to me and grabs a small bag of fruit gushers.
"Thanks Ev." she says with a smile. She opens up the pack and starts to eat them. "This place is so nice it's like a castle." Tori says. I smile, honestly I had that same thought when I first came here when I was younger.
"Yeah this place is nice, but the best part is my bathroom." Rosie says. I give her a strange look. What? Her bathroom? "Yeah I have a huge vanity that has so much make up and hair accessories. And my closet has so many different styles of clothes! It's literally heaven in my room. And shoes. Oh god, don't even get me started with all my shoes."
"No way! That sounds so nice... I wish I had a huge closet with a bunch of clothes and shoes... I only have like one pair of Uggs and then sneakers." Tori says with a sigh.
Rosie places her yogurt forcefully onto the counter creating a huge bang.
"One... pair... of... Uggs?" she says. Tori nods. "Oh goodness... I have so many shoes I don't mind sharing. Come on let me help you out girl." Rosie walks around the island and grabs Tori's wrist. "What size are you?"
"Seven in a half." Rosie smiles as they walk toward the door.
"Perfect that's what size I am! I have so many different brands, like Uggs...." She gets cut off as they leave the room.
Wait... did they just ditch me?
I peer to my right and see Gavin staring at the door where the two girls just walked out. Shit! They left me alone with Gavin...
"Uhh... is there anything in particular you wanted to see?" I ask. Wow this is awkward.
He looks at me and raises an eyebrow. "No." he says.
Well... now I don't know what to do... Wait! We have a movie room. Obviously he will want to see that.
"I just thought of something! Come on." I smile and grab his hand. I drag him through the halls and into the movie room. The place is empty and the lights are off so I flick them on and drag him to the front. I turn to him and give him a big smile. "Isn't it cool in here? This is our theatre room!"
He looks around. "Wow, you guys sure have a lot of luxuries in this place." I frown. That's all he can say? He doesn't even admit that it's amazing in here? Ugh.
"Yeah I guess we do. We are a big pack and we make a lot of money. We save most of it, but luxuries come along when we don't know what to do with the extras." I say with a shrug.
He glances down at my hand and I follow his eyes. Crap! I'm still holding his in my own. I quickly let go as a blush begins to form on my cheeks. Suddenly Gavin reaches out and grabs my left wrist. I look up at him shocked.
"How did you get better so fast? Just earlier today your wrist was practically broken." Not practically. It was broken... But I can't tell him that...
"I told you, it was just sore from falling."
He stares deep into my eyes. I gaze back into his own captivating grey ones. For a moment, I almost get lost in them.
"I know you're lying, but if you don't want to tell me I guess I can't make you." He releases my wrist and I let it fall to my side. "and another thing. Why did you get in the middle of Jason's and my fight earlier? You could have been hurt." He states angrily. I frown at him.
"You should be thankful I stepped in. If not, then you might not be here right now." God how disrespectful can you get!
"I would have been just fine without you. Your little boyfriend wouldn't have beaten me in a fight." I glare at him.
"I never said he would beat you. And for another thing he isn't my boyfriend." Gavin raises an eyebrow at my last comment. Oh god, not this again.
"You cannot tell me you guys aren't boyfriend and girlfriend." He says and fold his arms over his chest.
"We aren't. We are only best friends. Jason is like a brother to me."
"That's a weird brother-sister relationship you have going on there. You could fool anyone into thinking you were dating." I frown.
"It's not any of your business anyway." I copy his position and fold my arms over my chest. "Why are you always picking on me?" He lets out a laugh.
"I don't pick on you."
"Yes you do."
"No I don't."
"Yes, Gavin. You do."
"No, Evelyn. I don't."
"Ugh! This is pointless." I shout. "You're so stubborn!"
Just then all the lights go out and a huge boom cracks trough the air. I let out a scream and grab onto Gavin's arm.
"What the hell was that?" I whisper frightened to him. He lets out a laugh.
"It's what you call thunder. There's a storm going on outside right now. You didn't know?" he asks. I shake my head. Oh wait, it's pitch black in here, he can't see that.
"No. I didn't know." I say quickly, answering his question.
I hate thunder storms... They scare the crap out of me because of the lightning that comes with them... They cause problems like this! Now we can't see anything.
I slowly let go of Gavin. "So now what?" Gavin says to me.
"I don't know... We've never really had the lights go out before. If our lights are out then the city lights have to be out too..." Wow that will cause a lot of problems out there.. Since the traffic lights won't be working, and it's going to be rainy there could be a lot of accidents. Wait.
"Oh my gosh. You guys still have to drive home in this..."
"Yeah... We should probably leave soon then. It's probably getting late." He says. I hear him try to move toward the door. I hear a loud thud. "Shit." He mutters. I laugh.
"You just hit your foot didn't you?"
"My knee..."
I laugh loudly, "That's the worst!"
"You're telling me..."
"But you guys can't go out there when the lights are out." I say. I hear him feeling around.
"Well why not?"
"Because the city lights are out too. That means you won't be able to see any red lights or green lights and it's raining so you could easily get into an accident." I hear another thud. "You know I can help you get out of this room right?" I hear a sigh.
"Fine. I give up. Lets just find Tori and Seth and see what they want to do." I smile.
"Sounds fair enough, now come here." I hear him start to shuffle around again. He starts to get closer.
"Where are you?" He questions. His voice sounds very close.
"Right here." I feel something touch my side and I let out a light laugh. I reach my hand out and grab the hand that just accidentally tickled me. "Sorry I'm very ticklish..." I admit shyly.
He laughs. I smile because his laugh seems so foreign to me, it's nice to hear.
"I can tell. I wasn't even trying to tickle you." I start to walk toward the exit. I shimmy through the couches in the theatre room and pull Gavin behind me.
Finally I manage to get us through and I open the door. The hallway is pitch black. Just like I though it would be. Hmm, we should find Seth and Jason in Jason's room first. Okay, time to go on a little adventure.
