Chapter 7 - Because She's A Girl

Olivia POV

"Why am I doing this again?" Lydia asks as we near the room where Uncle Marcus does most of his work.

"You're a girl," Liam says earning a laugh from his twin.

"Shut up," she rolls her eyes.

"People could actually get offended by that, you know," I tell Liam.

"Then they're clearly overly sensitive and can't take a joke," he raises his eyebrows, suggesting that he's talking about me. This leads to me shoving him. Then him shoving me. Which continues for a while. Nobody really seems to care.

"Will you two quit it already?" Luke comments from in front of us and I end up shoving him too. Theo shushes us as we approach.

"Why are we making such a big deal out of this? Just ask him!" I say.

"Then why don't you do it?" Lewis asks.

"I'm a girl," I sarcastically smile at Liam. Lydia laughs loudly before covering her mouth.

"Lydia?" Her father calls out to her, "come in here, please."

We all signal her to go in some way or another and she finally does.

"Are you alright? Is your brother annoying you again?" He asks.

"No, father," she says as we hide beside the open door, just out of view.

"I wanted to ask,-" she pauses and I can hear her scrape her shoe along the floor uncomfortably.

"Speak, Lydia," Uncle Marcus becomes more impatient.

"Why are you always out at the wall now? Is something going on?" She finally asks.

His tone becomes more relaxed, "it's none of your concern, darling."

"I understand if you feel you have to protect us from the truth but really, I want to know."

"You're still very young, Lydia. I don't want you to have to worry about all this just now. Enjoy your freedom while you can," he tells her.

"But, father I-"

"No, I've heard enough of that. If that is all then you may go," he sends her out.

She closes the door, sighs and whispers, "I told you it wouldn't work."

"Maybe it's because she's a girl," Lewis teases his twin and he rolls his eyes.

"Shut up," Liam starts the shoving match with his twin.

"You shut up, idiot," Lewis shoves him back and rolls his eyes at him.

"It's getting old now," Theo laughs, "you'll have to come up with something else now Liam."

Lewis Maxwell I love you. Liam Maxwell I hate you. Theo, eh, if you're on my side then fine.

Hey, sarcasm runs in the family.

Lydia just scoffs and rolls her eyes, grabbing my arm and dragging me ahead of the boys.

"Tell me to ask him then have the nerve to judge me," she mumbles under her breath, but loud enough for them to hear.

"Lyd?" I call to her, waving my hand in front of her face, unsure what to do. She drags me all the way to her room, not saying a word. As she closes the door, she turns round with a worried expression on her face.

"Lydia?" I ask again.

"Sorry," she says quietly, "we had to get away from them without being suspicious. I have to tell you something important."

"What is is?" I ask as I follow her to sit down.

"I saw something that my father had written down- they're taking you to meet them Liv," she says quickly and panicked.

"Whoa, Lyd, slow down. Who are they taking me to meet?" I try and calm her down.

"Who do you think? The Daltons!" She practically screams in my face.

I feel my face fall, "what?"

"They have these meetings every year about- well, I don't know! The world and stuff? Half of its destroyed anyway," she begins to pace the floor.

"I was never told this," I try to steady my breathing.

No, it's probably just a misunderstanding. They would never do that.

"I remember being told a while ago about them but I never thought you'd ever actually go!" Lydia scrunched the hair at the top of her head in her hands.

"Okay, Lydia, its fine, I'm sure they wouldn't actually make me go-"

"It gets worse!" She interrupts, voice raising, "you have to go with Luke and Theo! Something about the three oldest I think."

"No," I put my head in my hands, my voice muffled, "please tell me the Daltons aren't doing the same thing?"

Her eyes instantly widen with shock, "I completely forgot about that!"

"Are you serious it's the first thing I thought of!" I stand up, bringing my head up. Both of us are now completely panicking.

"Olivia if they find out-"

"I know!" I yell at her.

"Then why aren't you panicking?"

"I am panicking!"

"Panic more!"

"What? No!"

"Yes! This is so bad!" Lydia is now speed-walking around the room.

"I know!" I yell again, causing her to stop.

She sighs, "sorry. I panicked."

"I gathered."

"Oh no, but Olivia this is really bad," she puts her hands on top of her head again.

"Lydia! No panicking!" I put my hands out to signal her to stop.

"Sorry."

"Okay, okay," I calm myself down, "we'll both just act like we don't know each other. Simple enough, right?"

"But what if he doesn't understand that and comes up to you?" She asks.

"He'll know who I am in relation to his family, I doubt it," I begin to feel better, "he's not stupid. Probably."

"Yeah you're probably right," she finally calms down.

"It's just- I wasn't told. Do you know when it is?" I ask my cousin.

"Just under two weeks away. You've got loads of time and I'm sure Uncle Felix will tell you soon," she says and I nod.

"Who else is going in our family?"

"Not exactly sure- but I think my dad, all our Uncles, grandma and you three. The rest of us are probably too young to go just now," Lydia explains.

Our grandmother, Dahlia, is the oldest relative I have, and even though Felix took over as King, she's still in charge of a lot of stuff.

"It's okay," I tell myself more than her, "I'll be fine."

"Yeah! That's the spirit!" She cheers me on.

I just hope I can do it.
