Chapter 5 - The Only One I Can't Have

Olivia POV

As I slowly awaken, I begin to hear unfamiliar voices.

"What did you do to her, Logan?"

"Nothing! I swear!"

"Clearly it wasn't nothing."

"Shut up, Elizabeth."

"You shut up! And don't call me that!"

"Enough, both of you!"

My heavy eyes begin to open as three pairs of eyes look over me.

My memories come flooding back and I sit up quickly, "where am I?"

The older-looking woman on my left begins to talk before she is cut off.

"Let me handle this, please," he nods towards the door and the other two women reluctantly leave.

"What's going on?"

"You fainted, so I brought you back here to keep you safe."

"Your castle?" My eyes widen.

He shrugs, "yeah."

I jump up quickly.

So, not only have I breathed air from the other side of the wall, I am now in the Dalton castle!

I am most definitely going to be killed!

I rush towards the door frantically, "no, no I have to go."

Running towards me he grabs my arm for what feels like the hundredth time, "why are you so worried? I understand with you being from the other side and all but I really mean you no harm. I'll get you back over and leave you alone, I promise."

I shake my head, close to tears, "you don't understand. Really."

"Try me," he winks.

"They're going to kill me," slips out my mouth as I grab the back of my head with my hands.

He reaches his hand out to me "hey, what's wro-"

"Don't touch me!" I yell. He takes a few steps back in shock.

After a few moments of staring at each other I finally gather my thoughts, "I'm sorry. This wasn't supposed to happen. Just please, take me back."

He just nods and leads me outside. It's still dark, I mustn't have been out for a long time. In the distance we can see the effects of the battle but choose to ignore it.

"So, who were those other people?" I ask, trying to break the silence.

"Oh, uh, that's my sister Betty and one of our maids," he says and I nod.

As we exit, he turns to me, "what do you think?"

I look around.

"It looks so much more different than our side," I gasp.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" He jokes.

"I don't really know," I pause in thought, "wait, why were you even on my side in the first place?"

He chuckles, "I found the gap in the wall and felt a little rebellious, I guess. I never knew I'd become so attached to it. My side of the woods is terrible compared to that."

"I never got around to your name, by the way," I realise.

"Oh yeah. Logan Dalton," he smiles, "nice to formally meet you."

I giggle, before my face falls.

"What?" He asks.

"I can't do this."

"What?" He repeats.

"I'm a Maxwell," I sigh, fidgeting with my hands, "you know, as in-"

Why did I do that? He's not going to let me go now!

"Just please don't tell my family about this, I'm sorry for everything just let me go home and you'll never see me again," I plead on the verge of tears.

He and I stand in silence for a while. I can't tell what he's thinking but I can't face him.

Then, he scoffs and shakes his head.

"What?" I finally look up.

"Of course I'd fall for a Maxwell. You're the only one I can't have."

My mouth opens slightly, "wha-"

He tilts my head up and presses his lips against mine. At first I stand in utter shock as my whole body tenses. I hesitate, but my hands instinctively wrap round his neck, deepening the kiss. Butterflies shoot up my chest.

What am I doing?

I pull away gently and breathe against his lips, "we can't."

He quickly lets go of me, "I'm sorry. I don't- I shouldn't have done that."

"I have to go," I quickly turn around and run towards the woods as I feel him watch me.

I have to get out of here now. I run as fast as my legs will carry me to the wall. When I find the gap in the wall, I dive through, tearing my dress. I fall and land on my back, breathing heavily.

"Am I dreaming?" I whisper to myself. No. That was real. I'd never felt like that ever in my life. I let out a frustrated groan. Why him out of all people? Is this just a cruel joke?

I notice that Violet is tied to a tree and a note is lying by the rope.

How did he even get rope in the first place? I wonder, picking up the note.

Sorry about making you faint, pretty girl. Hope we can do it again, minus the fainting, of course.

I blushes furiously at the note. There was no way I was falling for him, I wouldn't allow it. I suddenly realise the time, the darkness and how much trouble I'll be in.

"We have to go, Vi!" I climb onto Violet and we race towards the castle. I jump off and quickly put her back into the stables.

I run inside, closing the doors behind me. I step quietly upstairs and finally reach my door.

"Olivia! You're back!" Lydia surprises me from out of nowhere.

I jump, "you scared me."

"Oh my goodness, what happened to you?" She examines my ripped dress and dirty arms and face.

"Shh," I pull her inside, "we can talk in here."

"So, tell me!"

I decide I can trust her and tell her the full story.

"He's a Dalton!?" She jumps up from her seat on my bed.

My hands fly onto her mouth, "be quiet!"

"Sorry!" She replies in a hushed tone.

"I don't know what to do," I put my head in my hands.

"Are you insane? Uncle Felix would absolutely kill you! And that's if Luke and the other boys don't get to you first! Not to mention what they'd all do to him!" She exclaims.

She gasps, "oh, I bet Luke and Theo would go straight for him and-"

"Lydia!" I stop her, "don't you think I know that?"

"Then why are you even having to think about it?"

"I don't know Lydia, I really," I pause, "I really like him."

At that moment the doors swing open.

"I hope I didn't hear that correctly."

"Uncle Felix?" Lydia and I exclaim together.

He laughs, "that's hardly an answer."

He examines my dress, "and where have you been?"

"I went for a ride earlier, fell off my horse," I mumble, looking at the floor. I'm not a great liar and I can't afford Uncle Felix detecting my lies.

"While it was dark? Have you not seen how late it is?"

"Of course. I went earlier," I nod.

He simply hums in response, "don't let it happen again, Olivia."

I nod, refraining from rolling my eyes, "yes, Sir."

"You both should be off to bed. It's late and I want you all up early tomorrow."

He walks out and closes the door behind him. We listen as his footsteps become quieter until Lydia sighs in relief.

"That was close."

"Too close," I nod.

She yawns, "well, I'm off to bed, 'night."

"Goodnight," I close the doors behind her.

I lay in bed and think.

It's just my luck, the first guy I ever become interested in is a Dalton.

I sigh and look at the pictures of my brothers, my parents and I. I couldn't let them down. Yet the same name keeps repeating itself in my head.

Logan Dalton.
