Chapter 39 - The World Turned Upside Down
Olivia POV
They were far off in the distance, but it wouldn't take long for them to catch up to us. We both knew we were completely surrounded, but Logan was still refusing to give up. My breath became loud and rapid, the slightly taller than usual grass flies by me as I grip his hand tighter. We're trapped.
"Logan," I call to him, out of breath from our previous sprint from the woods.
"Not now, Liv," I can hear him begin to lose his breath, too, yet he still continues to run.
"Logan," I breathe out his name as loud as my tired lungs will allow me, "we're not getting out of this. It's over."
We suddenly stop, both of us gasping for air. At the bottom of the hill the guards notice us. I can feel tears well up in my eyes.
"Come on," he looks around and I spot lots of guards racing towards us, "we need to get out of the open. They're coming for us."
Sobs rack my body and I fall to the floor. I had completely given up hope. Logan tugs on my arm desperately, trying to get my to get up.
"I can't, I'm sorry-" I gasp, "it's over, Logan."
He grabs my face with both of his hands, forcing me to look up at him, "listen, Oli-"
A loud gunshot rings in my ears and I cover my ears in fright. I remained still for a few moments before looking up.
"Logan?" I get up quickly.
I notice him lying face down on the ground, coughing and barely moving. I instinctively run to him, crouch down beside him and see him clutching his stomach. I gently pull his hand away and see it completely covered in blood, some of the grass underneath him tinted a horrific shade of red.
This can't be happening. No, God, please no. Tears stream down my face and I can't stop them. I can see the pain evident in his eyes as he reaches for my hand.
I hold onto it tightly and stroke his hair to try and comfort him, "hey, don't move you'll be-"
Both of my arms are suddenly grabbed and I'm pulled away, kicking and screaming.
"Don't touch him!" I scream as they pick him up, I see his body go limp and my heart shatters.
"Let go of me!" My struggle is pointless as I am dragged away. I feel as though I am being taken to my death, dragged up the hill kicking, screaming, whatever I can think of, but it was useless.
Adrenaline was coursing through my veins with the need to get back to him. I am - literally - dragged through the Centre Building and back to our side. The ground slides from beneath my feet as I desperately try to stop the guards from taking me back. Back to that castle.
He was fucking shot, oh my God.
"Luke!" I see my twin in the distance and he slowly walks towards us. My eyesight wasn't great, but I could see a cold stare on his face as he waved his hand to signal the guards to stop. He had exited through the Centre Building, but he was alone. His eyes were dull, expression unreadable.
"Luke?" I ask, quieter, still sniffling from my previous crying. I didn't know why I was still trying to appeal to him after everything, but my logical way of thinking was out the window after Logan had been shot.
He grabs my arm with a firm grip and turns to whoever was dragging me, "it's okay. I've got her."
I am finally let go of, giving the guards the dirtiest look I could possibly give. I wiped my tears quickly, underneath my eyes stinging a little from how much I had been rubbing them. Luke yanked me in the direction of the castle, completely silent.
"Luke? Luke listen to me for a minute," I plead, but he gives no response, "I'm sorry, I know you're angry, but this is serious!"
"Listen to me, someone shot him, Luke," his grip simply tightens at my words as he continues to ignore me.
"He could be dead! Please, Luke!" I try to pull my arm away. Still no response.
I shoved his arm away with as much force as I could, but I felt my hand off of something in his pocket. Something hard, and it hurt. He seemed to be shocked by my actions, because he lets go.
I shake my hand, flinching at the pain, "ouch, what is that in your pocket?" His eyes twitch slightly, but I notice. Is it something he doesn't want me to see?
"What's going on with you? Tell me!" I demand, reaching for his pocket as he grabs my wrist.
"Shut the fuck up, don't make things worse for yourself," he tries to grab my other arm but I reach into his pocket before he can react. My heart almost stops.
I stare at the gun in my hand, feeling extremely dizzy.
"You didn't-" my voice comes out as a whisper.
He remains silent and I look at his eyes once again. Emotionless. Dull. As much as I didn't want to believe it, it was beginning to click in my head.
"Luke-" my breathing hitches as I can feel the anger raging through my body, "tell me- tell me you didn't shoot him."
With the silence that followed, I was frozen. He killed him. I instantly lunge at him, punching, kicking, scratching. I had never thought of myself to be so violent, but the anger pulsating through my body was so intense I couldn't contain it any longer.
"I hate you, you're not my brother! YOU'RE A MURDERER!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.
Surprisingly, he doesn't hit me back, but grabs my wrists and pushes me to the ground, holding me down. He breathes heavily, "I didn't mean to kill him, Olivia, I swear to God-"
I struggled furiously, trying to get out of my brother's iron grip. He admitted to shooting him. My twin brother.
"How do you think I felt when I found out about you two? It didn't take a genius to put two and two together on that hill, you know. You've betrayed us all Olivia!" He says and I stop my struggle.
"I'd never kill someone, not even him-" he pauses, "not on purpose- I- I couldn't."
"Then why did you shoot him?" I can feel the tears rapidly running down my face.
"I found the gun in Felix's office a while ago. I took it. I was angry, Liv. I still am," he purses his lips and desperately tries to control his anger and I feel his arms shake.
"I wanted to hurt him- I wasn't thinking. I acted without thinking and I killed him and-" he breathes shakily, "I didn't- I wouldn't kill someone. I didn't mean it."
"You still killed him!" My voice cracks slightly as I recall what happened.
His body continues to shake, "I know."
"But weren't you with all of them? Didn't they see-" I cut myself off, unable to recall the events on the hill.
He shakes his head, "I ran ahead. Won't be long before they find out, though," his chest rises and falls heavily.
He lets go of my arms as I begin to sob, covering my mouth with my hands.
He's dead, is all that echoes in my head.
Logan Dalton is dead.
