Chapter 36 - Claustrophobia
Olivia POV
A loud, constant banging on the door makes the two of us suddenly wake up. It worried me- only Ryan knew exactly where we lived and if it was him it must be urgent. The thought that it may not be him also worried me.
"Wait here, I'll get it," Logan gets up to answer the door. I nod, but peek over at the door from the bed.
"You two need to leave now," I notice a breathless Ryan outside, pacing around and panicking. It had to be at least eight in the morning, and the sun was just beginning to rise over the snow-covered streets.
"Why, what's going on?" Logan says calmly, inviting him inside and trying to get him to calm down.
"Yesterday they didn't do the searches and I didn't know what was going on, so I went up and asked my father and he said they were cancelled, so I didn't think I should tell you-"
"They're cancelled?" I interrupt, fully standing up from the bed. I didn't really care how I looked at that moment, I was more interested in listening to Ryan.
"No," he shakes his head rapidly, "I thought they were cancelling it because they found something over there, but they're doing them right now. Like right now right now."
He continues, "I tried to find you yesterday but you were gone as I had expected, there was no way I could have told you! They must have changed the date from yesterday to today!"
Why would they change it to today? I thought they were determined to find us? What happened?
"It's okay, we'll leave now, come on Olivia," Logan says, waving me over.
"You can't!" Ryan continues to freak out, "they have the whole place surrounded!"
Logan stops, "what?"
"They don't want anyone getting out of the villages!" He continues, "I don't know what to do!"
I bite my lip anxiously. We were trapped. If they had the whole place surrounded it meant no one was getting in and no one was getting out.
"What do you mean by surrounded?" I ask him, trying to find a way out of the situation.
"The entire border of all the villages. You're not getting out of here, they've got guards absolutely everywhere and reporting any suspicious activity," he explains.
I notice Logan clench his jaw and purse his lips, something I've noticed him do often when he was angry or irritated, "there has to be a way out."
"There's not Logan, trust me," Ryan shakes his head, "I spoke to my father. He said no one's getting in or out. When they didn't find anything on the other side it apparently made them more determined."
Logan sighs frustratedly, "okay, okay we'll figure something out."
"Well it's going to have to be fast you know," Ryan fidgets nervously.
We look towards the busy streets in the distance- our street was quiet as ever but we had a good view of all the others. Lots of people were out and there was a growing noise of chatter.
Ryan turns to us again, "listen, I'll go see what's going on. You two need to figure something out. If you need me you know where to find me."
Logan nods and he takes off down the street. My palms begin to sweat and I wipe them on my jeans. He notices and takes my hands in his.
"We'll get out of this, Liv," he rubs circles with his thumbs onto my hands, "don't worry."
I was so worried, I desperately wanted to break down crying, blaming myself for being so stupid to do this. I was terrified of what would happen if we were caught.
I had a terrible feeling.
"Okay," I take a shaky breath, repeating it again, "okay."
He gives me a reassuring kiss, and I kiss back for a few minutes until he pulls away, "come on, we have to leave now."
"What?" My eyes widen in shock, "they'll find us!"
"They'll find us here," he shrugs, "we've got a better chance out there than in here. I don't want to risk it, there's not a lot of places to hide anyway."
"Here," he throws me my coat with the big hood that we used to sneak around, "put this on and follow me."
"Why?" I ask, putting it on.
"They're doing house searches, not people searches," he chuckles, "if we can just hide in plain sight for a while we might be able to get past them. Or we could try and find a way to dodge the guards surrounding the place. Either way it might just work."
I sighed, not quite sure with his plan, but agreed with the fact that staying here would guarantee our discovery. My heart was beating at an alarmingly fast pace. It was Winter, so we wouldn't look suspicious with the big hoods.
Logan took my hand comfortingly and we stepped outside. He closed the door behind him, not bothering to lock it. Ryan would handle the place, we knew that. We lifted our hoods up and begin to walk down the busiest street.
"Don't leave my side," he whispers into my ear and I nod.
He lead me through the crowds by my shaky hand. I was trying to ignore the chatter around us, feeling as though everyone was staring at us. It felt like they were talking about us, when I knew they weren't The streets were getting busier and busier by the second. It seemed everyone wanted to know what was going on. I felt extremely claustrophobic. I squeezed by boyfriend's hand tighter and he sensed my nerves.
He rubbed my back subtly, repeating in my ear, "we'll be okay. We'll be okay."
I nod wordlessly, focusing on my surroundings. I didn't recognise anyone, of corse, but I was terrified in case I did. I could just picture Luke or Theo noticing me through the crowds and the thought terrified me.
The voices were becoming more muffled and my neck and face were heating up, calm down, calm down.
"We might need to go inside a store. It's getting too busy," he says in my ear, not bothering to whisper because I wouldn't hear him.
"Okay," I squeeze my eyes shut tightly for a moment to calm myself. He notices and drags me into a nearby store, I don't notice which one.
I feel his hands rest on my shoulders, "Liv are you okay?"
"No," I shake my head, tearing up, "I can't do this."
"Yes you can," he frowns at my panic, "Olivia, please, you can do this."
"I know, just," I take a few deep breaths, "give me a minute."
"Yeah," he rubs my shoulders, "take all the time you need."
He pulls me forward to let a customer by, both of us keeping our heads down just in case. No doubt we looked suspicious with our coat hoods up indoors but we didn't care.
"I don't want to lose you," I whisper, looking up at him.
"You won't. I know you don't want to do this, but we have to go," he pulls me outside by my hand and I take another shaky breath. You can do it. You can do it.
The streets were getting busier. Logan whispers into my ear, "Let's go somewhere else. It's getting too busy here."
We bumped into lots of people and I nearly lost his hand. I put my other hand on top of his to make sure I stayed with him. He squeezes my hand and walks in front of me, leading the way. I shiver, I forgot how cold it was.
I make sure my hood stays up. He stops abruptly and I look ahead of him to see why. The guards are surrounding the crowds, probably trying to contain them. They were shouting orders to separate everyone, presumably for safety reasons.
"This way," he has to shout to be heard, I follow him quickly.
I suddenly feel something hit my shoulder, sending me tumbling backwards. My hand slips out of Logan's and I panic.
"I'm so sorry! Are you alright?" I hear a voice, presumably from the person who bumped into me.
I ignore them, trying desperately to find Logan, "Logan?" My voice cracked slightly.
I pushed through a few people, but couldn't seem to find him anywhere. I bit my lip desperately to stop myself from crying. No matter how many times I called his name I wouldn't be heard.
I didn't know where to go, I couldn't go back and I couldn't stay where I was. I was trapped.
