Chapter 31 - Luke's Inner Conflict
Luke POV
"Wait, are you serious?" I stand up in shock. Olivia hadn't returned in four days now and it turns out one of the Daltons was missing, too.
"Yes," Uncle Felix nods, "I have no doubt that this is the work of that organisation our prisoner spoke of."
"But there were no signs of break-ins in either castle. Isn't that a bit strange?" My cousin, Theo, speaks up.
Uncle Felix nods, "yes, I noticed that. Unless it's not a kidnapping."
"What do you mean, of course it is! Olivia wouldn't just leave!" I argue. I had faith in my sister, and with everything she went through she wouldn't leave.
"It's just a suggestion. Besides, what else can we do? Both sides have guards patrolling and they're even considering house searches!" Theo points out.
"I don't think the people would be happy if we started searching everyone's homes. Especially this close to Christmas," Uncle Marcus says, "but then again this is the princess, I'm sure they'd understand."
"Yes, I'd like to think of that as a last resort," Uncle Felix sighs, "but I'm not sure what else to do. I don't think any of us like waiting, and with what happened last time I feel awful."
If we all just sit about like this there'll be more bombs and we might never see Liv again!
"But don't you think it's unusual," Uncle Felix begins, "that if these two were kidnapped, their kidnappers haven't demanded anything yet? The last time almost instantly they demanded something in return for Olivia but it's been four days and we've heard nothing. They could've even boasted about killing them, but yet we've heard nothing."
Uncle Jeremy nods, "I agree. That is weird."
"I hate to admit it but he has a point," Theo nods.
Yeah, he's right. But what else could it be?
"So what do you think happened?" I asked my uncle, still refusing to believe anything else.
He shrugs, "I suppose we'll find out," he looks at me seriously, "I assure you whatever happened we will get to the bottom of it."
I nod solemnly , "thank you, Uncle Felix."
Theo and I left our uncles in the King's office to continue with their meeting. I was desperate to find out what happened and I knew he was too. I knew Lewis and Liam wanted to help too but I didn't want them getting involved. I knew Olivia wouldn't want it either, maybe that was why I was so against it. Why does it feel like she's dead? She will be if I don't do something.
"He's right, you know," Theo says quietly.
"Huh?" I look up from the ground.
"There were no signs of a break in or anything. Guards were at the doors all night and surely if she was kidnapped there would be some sort of sign? The Daltons had no signs of break-ins either," he shrugs, "I'm just sayin', maybe it wasn't a kidnapping."
"Really, Theo?" I glare at him angrily, "you seriously think she ran away? What makes you so sure?"
He holds up his hands, "I didn't say that."
"You implied it!" I argue, "Olivia would never do that! Never!"
"She was acting kinda weird before it. We all thought so," he raises his eyebrows, "maybe something happened that we don't know about."
"No, enough of that!" I growl, "I know my own twin sister. She would never do that, so just forget it."
"Calm down, Luke," he puts his hand on my shoulder, "we'll figure it out."
I shove his hand away and storm down the hall.
"Oh, sorry!" Lydia bumps into my shoulder, stumbling back a little.
"You okay Lyd?" I grab her arm to stop her falling over.
"Fine," she responds quickly, trying to push past me as if she was in a hurry.
She had been acting really nervous and strange, I guessed she was just really emotionally impacted by all of this. I hadn't really spoken to her. I walked away, deciding to leave her alone. We're all going through a rough time, I should just leave her.
I shook my head, what was I doing? I had to act fast. I had to get my sister back no matter what. Even if I had to search myself. I turned around and make my way back to Uncle Felix's office. I had to come up with some sort of a plan, and fast.
I enter to find my family still there and they all stop to look up at me. I clear my throat, "we need to act fast. No matter what happened."
"What do you propose?" Uncle Felix raises his eyebrows at my boldness.
"We do full searches of both sides of the wall until we find them. We'll give the people some notice, but I'm sure they'll understand it's necessary," I explain to my family.
I was calling the shots now, whether they liked it or not, and no stone would be left unturned until I had my sister back safely.
"What if that doesn't work?" He asks, almost challengingly.
"Then I'll find her myself."
Lydia POV
It had been exactly four days since Olivia left. I was feeling more and more alone and I could do nothing but wait for her to contact me. It was Christmas Eve and I had never felt so unhappy. I decided to wait at least three weeks to give her some time. Even though I dealt with the guard following us the castle was on high alert after Liv's disappearance and I didn't want to risk it.
I also wanted to make sure none of them suspected me. I felt guilty not telling them, especially Luke. He acted so mean to Olivia and sometimes the rest of us but I knew he was very protective of his family. He just had to work on being more emotional. Since Liv left, something definitely changed inside of him and I heard he demanded both kingdoms be searched.
I couldn't find a way to contact Liv and tell her about the searches just yet, but I hoped she'd find out. Although I was regretting letting her go, I had to accept there wasn't anything I could do and just let it be.
I hope they have a plan for the searches when they find out, I think, frowning.
I hadn't seen Lewis and Liam very often, they were mostly moping in the library and helping where they can. They weren't this bad the first time, but then again she wasn't gone for this long. I sat down at my desk with a sigh. I had to let my emotions out somehow, so I grab a piece of paper and a pen.
Dear Liv,
I'm missing my personal alarm clock! Although, I'm sure Lewis doesn't mind not having to wake you up in the morning.
I drop my pen, thinking to myself, I don't want to say we all miss her and make her sad, but it's not exactly a joking matter either. I scrunch up the piece of paper and throw it away. I couldn't take the letter to the wall just yet anyway.
"Lyd, you in here?" I hear my brother knock on my bedroom door.
"Yeah, come in," I spin round in my chair to face him.
"I just thought I should let you know they're starting the searches of our side at eleven this morning. That's about half an hour," he tells me.
I glance at the clock on the wall, "oh yeah, I almost forgot!"
"Luke and I are going to go, I think some of the Daltons are coming too. It kind of makes sense though, technically they don't know if we have their guy and we don't know if they have Liv," he looks annoyed at the mention of the other family.
"They're coming to our side?" I ask, surprised.
"We're doing one side at a time I think. I'm not sure why. This side today and the other the day after tomorrow seeing as it's Christmas. The people were only alerted a couple hours ago, so if it is a kidnapping they can't hide, and any suspicious activity since will be reported," Theo explains.
"Oh, okay," I fidget with my hands uncomfortably.
"Do you want to come?" He asks, much to my surprise.
I shake my head, "I don't think so. I'll be fine here."
He looks surprised, "really? The first time you can get in on the action and you say no?"
"It's Christmas Eve," I remind him sadly, "shouldn't we all be spending time together as a family like we always do? I know Liv's gone and all but I can't handle everyone like this."
"We will, everyone's just really uptight just now so I don't think it's best. Tomorrow we will," he promises, "at least it's early in the morning so we will be back soon hopefully."
He walks over to me, "are you sure you don't want to come?"
"No thanks. I'm just really sad still," my face falls.
"Aw, Lyd," he comes over to give me a quick hug, "we'll find her. I promise."
