Chapter 11 - Quick Thinking
Olivia POV
I wake up to see a figure sitting on my bed beside me, watching me sleep.
"Logan?" I gasp.
He puts his fingers to his lips and leans in to whisper in my ear, "I missed you."
Chills run down my spine as I feel his breath on my face.
"What are you doing here? You have to get out now!" I tell him, pushing him away from me.
He laughs, "why, do you not want me here?"
"I- that's not it!"
He leans into my ear, whispering again, "Olivia."
"Logan? What are you doing?"
"Olivia," he repeats my name over and over again.
My eyes shoot open.
"Olivia!"
I am shaken awake by my brother, who looks confused.
"Lewis? What are you doing?" I ask him, still recovering from my dream.
"I was sent to wake you up, it's eight o'clock and you'll miss breakfast if you don't come down now," he tells me before turning to walk out the room.
"Oh. Thanks," I mutter before getting out of bed. He leaves, and I hear the morning knock on my door to signal that my "prep team" have arrived, as Liam likes to say.
Ready for the day I exit my room. As I start to head down the hall, I hear footsteps coming from behind me. I turned around to see a door slowly opening from down the hall. Freezing in fear, I listened for any more movement. I wanted to shout out for someone, but decide that might not be the smartest thing to do.
Am I being paranoid?
Then, I see a shadow approach the edge of the door way.
I take off running.
Hearing footsteps behind me, I can't look back in fear as I run as fast as I can in my dress and heels. I trip on some of the material of my dress and use my hands to stop my fall. I turn round quickly as I am grabbed and pinned up against the wall.
I let out a scream but my hand is covered by a figure wearing all black, whose face was almost completely covered by a mask apart from the eyes.
"Don't make a sound, and I might not kill you," I can hear the smirk in what appears to be a man's voice, "yet."
I instantly try to wriggle out of his grasp but am almost immediately overpowered. He suddenly brings a knife to my throat which stops me and I am unable to speak by the hand covering my mouth.
"You're going to listen to me very carefully, princess," I simply nod as he keeps the knife in its position and I watch it in fear. My breathing became much more shallow as I was desperately trying to save my throat.
"I have a few friends right now that are- keeping an eye on your brother. He's alive, so long as you do as I say," he explains and I nod. My eyes widen as I immediately think of Lewis who had just left my room.
"I want over that wall, and you're going to help me."
I steady my breathing as I slowly raise my hand and gently nudge his hand from my mouth, trying not to make sudden moves. He pulls away his hand but grabs a tight hold of my wrist.
"Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. That wall is heavily guarded at the Centre Building and that's the only way through to the other side. It's impossible," my voice shakes a little.
This seems to anger him as the knife is pulled away from my throat, "lying little bitch."
I barely had time to react before he brings his fist to my face, causing me to fall to the ground. I cry out in pain, the entire left side of my face numb, stinging and sore. I couldn't control the sobs that escaped my mouth.
He grabs my hair and forces me to look up at him, "if you don't do this, I'll make you watch your brother die a very slow, painful death, and then I'll kill you the same way. Don't test me."
I knew I had no other choice but to tell him about the hole in the wall, but just as I open my mouth I hear footsteps from along the hall and look up to see the masked man raise his fist again.
My eyes flutter open and I hiss at the stinging pain in my head.
"So, what are we going to do now? They know she's missing."
"Yeah, and they've got guards everywhere on both sides."
I lay still in the dimly lit room, trying my best not to make any noise to alert the voices behind my that I was awake.
"Both sides? Why?"
"The Daltons apparently see her disappearance as a threat to their family."
"So how are we going to get over?"
"What if we give her in exchange for us being allowed over?"
"Do you really think that would work?"
"Grab her first."
My eyes immediately shoot open and I try to stand up before being grabbed my two masked figures. My ears were ringing and my eyes were unable to focus.
They grab me into a standing position, but my knees shake and I fall towards the ground.
"Did she seriously pass out again?"
"I told you just to use drugs to knock her out! She could have brain damage or something and if she dies before we get to the wall we're not getting over!"
"I never hit her that hard!"
"Guess little pretty princesses can't handle it."
Instead of completely passing out, my eyes open once I hit the ground.
Glancing around the room, I see the windows are blacked out, there is very little furniture and everyone is wearing masks and identical black clothing.
I notice they all wear similar items around their wrists which look like watches but without the clock and instead a strange symbol The symbol is red and black and has some things I can't make out written on it. I conclude that these people must all be part of some sort of group or organisation.
"Give her some water or painkillers or something. She can't be completely out of it," a female voice commands.
I am pulled up again but this time into a sitting position with my back against a wall. I'm guided into drinking water and someone places a cold cloth on my forehead, making me feel more aware. I brought my left hand up to my face and gasped when I pressed against my jaw.
"Why do you want over that wall?" I ask, my voice still hoarse.
"You're not in a place to ask questions. Blindfold her. Now," a male voice commands as something covers my eyes.
I am dragged until I feel a breeze against my face. I realised were outside. I decided to stay quiet and not anger them any further. If I just cooperated I had a better chance of surviving. Unfortunately, I kept fading in and out of consciousness as the pain on my face wasn't getting any better. My knees kept wobbling and my legs collapsing. Luckily, they didn't get too angry and just held me up and dragged me along until eventually I was thrown over someone's shoulder.
We suddenly stop as the blindfold is torn from my face. I squint my eyes as they adjust to the bright light, feeling what was probably a migraine coming on. I look around and see that we are at the wall, and that about four guards are already rushing towards us.
I suddenly hear a click in my right ear. I turn my head slightly and see a gun pointed at the right side of my head. Everyone freezes.
"Let her go immediately! You will pay for your treason!" A guard shouts.
The man holding the gun to my head laughs, "give us what we want, and you can have her."
The guards look at each other, "and what is that?"
"Let us over that wall," I sense his smug tone. With my head spinning I was unable to remember if this was the same man that hit me. If it was that would be bad.
"Let the princess go first."
To my surprise, my kidnapper complies, "fine. Move back."
All of the guards move away from the entrance to the centre building, and the others on the other side to do the same. Still holding the gun to my head, the masked people walk towards the entrance of the Centre Building, where you could see the now unguarded exit to the other side.
The Daltons hated us, sure, but even their guards knew not to let me get hurt in these situations.
"Oh," the same masked man turns to face them, "some insurance that you won't follow us-"
My eyes widen in fear as he aims the gun towards my leg and pulls the trigger. I fall to the ground in agony, screaming. The masked people take off running through the centre building. The guards yell inaudibly, although they are right next to me, and I feel my body being lifted up once again.
As we enter the castle, I collapse onto the floor at the front entrance, blood streaming down my leg as some of the guards call for medical assistance. As my eyes come back into focus, I see the paled faces of my younger twin brothers.
"Luke-" I sob uncontrollably, gripping onto Liam's shirt, "where's Luke?"
Uncle Felix was beyond furious.
He was storming about the castle in a complete rage, and rightfully so. This should never have happened.
Meanwhile, I was in the infirmary area of the castle as our family doctor dug into my leg to retrieve the shards of bullet.
"You are very lucky, Olivia. That bullet could have gone much deeper. Luckily the angle of the gun wasn't very accurate. Whoever shot likely didn't mean to actually hit you. Either way you should recover fairly quickly," she explains.
Luke is sitting in the chair in the corner, darkly muttering some things to himself, Theo is trying to calm him down and Lydia is sacrificing her hand for me to squeeze. I smile at her apologetically. Lewis and Liam are just silent, sitting next to Luke and Theo and watching. Lydia was the only one making small talk about- well, I wasn't really listening.
I don't think any of them had seen me in such a state before.
"What happened to her?" Luke yelled at no one in particular as I wrapped my arms around his neck, hyperventilating into his shoulder.
"I-It h-hurts-" I sobbed loudly, unable to say much else. He rubbed my back but I could feel his shoulders tensing.
"Livvy, you need to tell me what happened, sweetheart," he says more quietly. Luke was never usually this caring towards me unless something serious had happened which was why my first instinct was to call for him. When it came down to it I really needed him.
I shook my head, looking at my leg again. His eyes widen a little as I twist it a little to show the wound.
He mutters something to himself before lifting me up and carrying me away.
"Are you okay?" Lydia asks, again.
I sigh, "fine."
"Are you sure?"
"Ye-" I draw in breath sharply as the tweezers dig in yet again, "-s"
I was thankful to see Lewis okay, I assumed he told our family what happened to him. I don't understand why he was let go alive but I'm happy anyway. Except for the guards, being left to explain to my uncle why his niece, who they all treated like glass, was beaten, shot and kidnapped. I guess I didn't think about it like that.
My face was also cleaned up and I was given painkillers, but there was quite a few purple bruises left behind and it felt as though my jaw was internally bruised, "my face still hurts, though."
"I can't believe that guy punched you in the face! What did he look like?" Lydia asks, and I can tell that the boys are also curious.
"Lyd, I already told you I don't remember a lot. I was out of it most of the time 'cause my head hurt and I kept passing out," I sit up a little on my elbows, "all I remember these masked people giving me water and being carried over someone's shoulder. Then I got shot."
I sigh, "I'm sorry. I wish I could remember."
"Sometimes when we have a traumatic experience we don't remember it. It's our brain's way of protecting us," the Doctor chimes, "and you were hit pretty hard on the head."
"I know he wanted to get over the wall, and they all wore these weird symbol things on their wrists."
"At least you're here now," Lydia sighs.
"Are you kidding?" Luke speaks for the first time in a while, "look at what she's been through! You didn't see her when she came in!"
"What?" I asked, frowning.
"Yeah, you were pretty bad when you got here, Liv," Liam nods, "you don't remember?"
I shake my head no.
"Why are you so calm anyway, Lydia?" Theo asks his sister.
"Well it's not as if we can chase after them. Let's just be glad that Olivia is back here and she's okay," my cousin squeezes my hand and I smile at her.
I see the boys glance at each other for a moment before they all get up and leave the room. I give Lydia a confused look and she shrugs.
