"Asha, are you alright?" Jack asked me and he helped me to my feet. I nodded and shook of his hand, which happened to be his scarred one.
We were walking down a hill, Blake in the lead. I had just stumbled against Jack and had another one of my fun little visions, but this time it was scary.
Not that it wasn't scary all the other times...this one was just scarier.
I mean...she looked dead...I don't even know what happened. I just saw her hitting her head on the ground, Tommy freaking out, and Jay...
Oh my gods, Jay.
I don't think...I doubt that...
I think he's dead. Not just looking dead, but actually dead. I mean...he was so pale and he didn't even flinch when he hit the ground. He looked like a rag doll.
Bianca...I don't think she's dead. Something told me I would feel it if she was dead. I mean...this connection is already unnatural, why can't we have one more thing going for us?
She can't be dead anyway. She just can't be. She's not allowed to be. I didn't get to find her, I didn't...I mean...if she was...I would have gotten to say goodbye.
Basically, my brain is on super-panic mode right now. So I didn't realize that Jack was talking to me again until he slapped my arm.
"What?" I asked, looking over at him. Jack rolled his eyes. "I said: 'you're about to step in a pile of dog poop', but you already stepped on it so I guess it doesn't matter now."
"I WHAT!?" I yelped, hoping on one foot and looking at the bottom of my shoe. Jack roared with laughter. "I KNEW YOU WOULD FALL FOR THAT!" He teased as I slammed my foot down and glared at him.
"Will you two shut up back there?" Blake snapped, rounding on us. Jack and I exchanged a quick look, which Blake didn't seem to catch. "We need to be quiet." He explained.
I mentally facepalmed, realizing how stupid it had been for me to shout so loudly at Jack. We could have easily been heard by any nearby monsters.
Without saying another word, Blake turned and continued to lead the way down the hill.
I felt something brushing my hand. I looked down and noticed that it was Jack. I cleared my throat loudly and Jack looked over at me, a smirk on his face. I looked at Jacks hand, his unscarred one, and then back at Jack, who was turning red. He pulled his hand away and angled his eyes at the sky, watching a few clouds float by. I bit my lip and put my hands behind my back.
After a few more moments of absolutely nothing happening, Blake stopped walking. I ran into him and he glanced back at me, eyebrows raised. I cleared my throat a little and looked down at my feet.
My heart jumped a little. Blake was obviously strong, at least, that's what it felt like. Maybe it was just his jacket? I didn't have more than a second to guess, and, in catching myself wondering about this, I turned bright red.
Blake let out something between a snort and a cough and turned back around. "Why aren't we moving?" Jack asked irritably. He kept glancing at me, I could see him out of the corner of my eye.
"Well...I think there's a bit of a barrier here." Blake muttered, holding up his hand and moving it cautiously forward. The still air suddenly rippled.
"So what are we supposed to do?" Jack questioned. Blake plunged his hand into his pocket and withdrew a small...Er...I'm not exactly sure what it was. It looked like a very small silver tube, open only at one end.
Blake caught the confused look on my face. His mouth twitched slightly. "This...well it was made by a well known mechanic. Leo Valdez."
I choked a little. Jack smacked me on the back, like it would help. "You alright, Asha?" Blake asked. "Not going to...give out on us again, are you?"
I scowled. "No...it's just that...haha...I know Leo Valdez...for me, actually, it's Uncle Leo. My father knew him...knew him well." I explained. Blake smiled a little. "So I guess you know a genius then?"
I snorted. "More like a goof. I can't believe he ever managed to become so successful, he's an idiot." I replied.
Blake grinned. "We've all got a little bit of child in us, it just shows in some more than others."
"Of course, O Wise Owl." Jack muttered. "Now can you please work your little gadget and get us out of here?"
Jack held out his scarred hand. I winced as Blake's eyes flashed toward it and widened.
"What was that?" He asked, pointing at Jack's hand. Jack hastily hid it behind his back. "Erm...nothing."
Blake lunged at Jack and grabbed his arm. For all of Jack's strength, he couldn't keep Blake from yanking it toward himself and examining the scars.
"Did you do this to yourself?" He asked quietly. Jack looked away. "I-no of course not." He lied. Blake narrowed his eyes skeptically. "Don't lie to me, Jack. You cut yourself, didn't you?"
Jack winced. "A long time ago-"
"It wasn't that long ago." I spoke up, regretting it a moment later when Jack sent me a venomous look.
"It's okay, Jack." Blake said, letting go of Jack's hand and stepping away. "My sister...she was sixteen. She used to cut herself, but it was worse than what you did, Jack. So much worse."
For the first time, I saw fear in Blake's eyes. "This is all you've done, right?" He asked frantically.
Jack, looking taken aback, nodded. I stared at the two boys, slightly confused. Did it really take something as horrible as cutting for these two knuckleheads to bond?
