Chapter 1
Airports have always fascinated me. Filled with echoes of sad goodbyes and yet, the beginnings of so many firsts. My journey starts on the same foot from India. For some reason, none of those emotions phase me as I gape at the overwhelming Incheon airport. The impressive architecture has me in awe and cements the fact that I'm here in Seoul.
For me, everything is a first, from living alone to working in a foreign country! And to be honest, I would have easily broken down as the day I left my family approached. But was it the endless interviews it took me to get here or was it the job at WC Entertainment, I wasn't so sure.
I quickly turn back around for baggage claim so that I don't end up missing them on the conveyor belt. I have packed quite a lot and cannot afford to lose it.
I collect all my bags, double checking if I got everything and walk out of the airport. However, my exit isn't how I imagined it back home. I wanted to step out in the warm sunny morning of Seoul, gaze at the skyline and feel the excitement of being here deep down in my bones. Instead, I step out to find a line of cabbies waiting and hurriedly get my suitcases in the trunk.
Yes, I am taking the expensive cab from the airport because I have literally packed my entire life in these bags. Now I can breathe! I sit back and allow myself to look at skyscrapers and busy roads with a stupid smile on my face.
"The weather is so nice!" I tell the cab driver, feeling the awkward Korean accent roll off my tongue. It's a sentence I have heard Koreans share in movies and K-dramas but the satisfaction of actually meaning it is quite different.
"Yes, the weather is really nice today." The cabbie replies with a gentle smile.
We arrive at the Airbnb that I have rented for the next couple of weeks. I had tried looking for apartments beforehand, but I couldn't judge how far it would be from the office. I decided I could look around for a place after I arrived to avoid testing my luck.
When I first started interviewing for companies, WC was my first choice as it's one of the big fours in Korea. Not only have they taken the music industry by storm, but their growth story really stuck with me. From the big fours, I got into two and even after trying to weigh their pros and cons equally, it had to be WC Entertainment. Primarily because of Young Nation Cult (YNC), the biggest second-gen K-Pop group right now. The seven-member group have been with me through thick and thin and me with them.
The apartment is nice and cosy but instead of looking around and exploring it further, I jump in for a shower. It's a Friday and I'm not expected to join at work until Monday. So, I could go sightseeing in Seoul like a tourist and enjoy my time in the city as planned. But the idea isn't sitting well with me. After munching on some snacks I had grabbed at Incheon, I call my Person-of-Contact at WC Entertainment to ask if I can come in now.
As soon as he says yes, I get dressed, feeling a jolt of nerves in my belly. Couldn't I just chill in the city like I had promised Amma? Well, I know me and I'm the kind of a person who can't sit still without settling things. There's no way I could sleep well with a new job tickling the back of my mind.
I set out towards the new WC Entertainment building on foot with my documents. They have rented an entirely new building with only a few floors being operational. But most of their staff have already started working there except for the artists signed under WC and its subsidiaries.
I maintain a poker face as I give my name at the help desk and wait in the reception area. But honestly, what is this place? The new building has a chic and rich vibe with a dark-toned interior, completely opposite to the bright open office spaces you see everywhere these days, especially Korean dramas, my only source of information about South Korea.
"Anuskha-nim?" A tall man approaches me as I am busy gawking at the high ceiling.
"Oh, hello." Korean, you are supposed to speak in Korean. "Annyeonghaseyo (hello)." I correct myself quickly, greeting Mr. Han with a bow.
We get the formalities out of the way as he politely enquires about my journey while walking me to HR.
"You can ask Aa Ra-shi about any doubts that you may have regarding any paperwork or your team. She will be handling the joining process. It was nice meeting you." And just like that, he's gone, and I'm introduced to Aa Ra, the HR rep who takes me on an office tour.
Aa Ra seems like a really warm person with light brown eyes that twinkle. She does most of the talking as I check out the office building without looking like a kid on a field trip. I mean, can you blame me? I have barely ever seen anything other than Young Nation Cult's practice rooms in their videos. Imagining that they will be working in this brand-new space alongside me blows my mind.
The next surprise that startles me is my own tiny office which is much more brightly lit. Both of us sit down and I fill out some forms as she gets someone to set up my login ID on the desktop.
Instead of leaving me to fend for myself, she takes me to the cafeteria, keeping on a steady conversation. The introvert in me definitely prefers someone who takes the lead but then I won't keep her for long because I don't have friends.
"So, how did you end up joining here?" She asks, her perfect Korean accent making me a little nervous.
"I was actually interviewing for a lot of companies in the entertainment industry, when I found an opportunity here. I'd always wanted some foreign experience, so here I am." Okay, that was good, no hiccups.
"I did take a look at your resume." She confesses with an embarrassed smile probably because she wasn't the one handling my interviews. "It was really quite impressive, your work experience. You are also a musician...?"
"Yeah. My mother's side is into traditional Indian music." I say, sidestepping the 'impressive work ex' thing. When you have no passion that earns you good money, you try most things that come your way.
"That's really interesting!" I know she wants to know more but a phone call interrupts her. And it turns out to be the Marketing Head who wants to meet me. We quickly finish the rest of our meal and hurry to his office.
Jeff, the Head of Marketing, who is very much Asian greets me with a handshake and gets right down to business without any how-was-your-trip small talk. Instead of Korean, he starts the conversation in English throwing me and my internal preparations off guard. As he explains the current project that I'll be handling, he calls up another person named Chris to meet us in his cabin.
"I'm sure you are aware of the fraternising rules at WC, especially with the artists. Apart from that, there are other confidentiality rules to maintain. Soon, HR shall book you for compliance training to go over these things. But the important thing to know is that socialising—to an extent—with artists is fine, but dating is strictly prohibited which can lead to termination." I nod without thinking much about these things while he moves to the details of the project.
"Although you shall be focusing on online marketing for YNC, there will be times when you might get pulled in for other groups. The company is planning to launch a new boy group soon. As we do not have many experts in this area, we can begin hiring shortly to bring us up to speed. I was also told that you are familiar with Japanese?"
"Yes, I have studied some Japanese, but I am still a beginner."
"Okay. Then we can set up some Japanese classes for you...? It would really be helpful for us while promoting in Japan." I'm agreeing with his comments when a gentle knock on the door interrupts us.
Assuming this is Chris, I glance at his 6 feet figure as he comes in and sits in the chair beside me. Even though his dark bronze hair is styled back, some pieces of hair fall over his hazel eyes. I greet him with a bow as he shares a friendly smile.
"Chris, she's with you now. She even arrived a day early! Better get to work then, I'm waiting for some great results." Jeff says in a much lighter tone.
Chris chuckles and throws in an internal joke before we get up and head over to my cabin. It is going to take me some time to get used to this humongous building.
"I assumed you would be sightseeing today." He says in a light-hearted tone while setting up something in his MacBook. I didn't even notice he had a laptop with him–wow, arm muscles!
"You and me both. I just wanted to get this out of the way, I don't know why." He looks over and nods before going back to his laptop. Soon I have access to files and plans that the team is working on.
"We'll probably have a meeting on Monday to discuss the project further. Until then, you can go over these files to understand the current plans. Do call me if you have any questions."
"Sure" And just like that, I am on my own. Before any sad thoughts regarding home start infiltrating my mind, I startworking.
